A vinter vonderland this morning (official start is Wednesday) in my corner of Nevada County. No snow but a hard frost that's still making everything white, slowly sublimating as the sun bears down.

Good luck to the hardy folks still camped out in Cannon Ball, ND. The forecast high temp is -9, the low tonight, -24 (-32 with wind chill).

Very interesting video. I had suggested that the DNC Staffer which was shot in the back several times was the source of the DNC e-mails in an earlier Sandbox post. Assange reports it was a leak, not a hack.

Julian Assange on The Sean Hannity Radio Show (12/15/2016) "WikiLeaks' Julian Assange: Russian Government Was Not Source For Podesta, DNC Emails"

Russ. Don't count on Paul to acknowledge that info. He didn't when I put forth that info.
It just doesn't fit his agenda. Besides."O" and Co. didn't a hoot about the possibility of Russian hacking.. Until Hillary lost. That just added to the hurt of the sphincter.

Russian hacks are probalby a lot of tried and failed. Did Russian hacks nfluence the election? If so, to what extent? Remember, I said Russian hacks. Yet to be established by the CIA and the FBI is the link between the Kremlin and Wikileaks. So, what did the Russians hack? That is what I want to know.

Not an expert in maritime law...but, if you see something 'unmanned' floating around in international waters, you may be able to claim 'salvage' rights.

So much whining about Obama's 'limp-wristed' foreign policy...what will you talk about a month from now- Obama, Hillary, proglibs...?

What are you looking for, a Gulf of Tonkin moment leading to a good old hot war?

Congress and the Coming Pensions Crisis

The federal government has zero legal or even moral responsibility for the consequences of the foolish and shortsighted choices that local officials have made, but as a matter of both pragmatism and compassion, Congress won’t want the harshest punishment to fall on those who had the least power in the system—the millions of public employees who were told by their lying union leaders and lying politicians that their pensions were safe.

This blog has been on top of this issue for at least 10 years, and now the rest of the nation is beginning to wake up to the magnitude of the problem.

@ 7:27.
I dunno. First Trump did the Twitter thumping on China's head, then Trump said, "Ah, forget it. Keep the stupid thing." China said, "Weet Dei Fuk?, this guy is crazy!
China announced they will return the thing Tuesday. Nothing to see hear, but what a coincidence that the scientific water ballon thang was mapping the ocean floor under the Chinese Navy, lol

You don't want it back? Then we don't want it either, so there,

George Rebane

BradC 727am - I believe you have been misinformed about UUVs. These unmanned, instrumented, and self-propelled vehicles are anything but some flotsam "floating around in international waters", ownerless and waiting for salvage by someone happening on them. This incident was a powerful political statement by China in which they took (didn't steal) the UUV while its control ship, a US Navy research vessel, looked on helplessly. Mr Obama has been a faithful executor of your foreign policy advice for the last eight years. We are at the brink of a hot war at multiple sites around the world because of that and nothing else. Bush2's invasion of Iraq did not foment the current situation as the Left continues to tell the low-information Americans.

TRUMP’S VICTORY IS A PIVOTAL TURNING POINT IN HUMAN HISTORY:

The results of these decades of indoctrination was plainly visible in the college students of today, who are all so left-wing by default that they consider standard Marxism too old-fashioned and conservative. Taking this into consideration, and remembering that the adults of today were the radical students of the recent past, it had seemed that these decades of indoctrination had been resoundingly successful, and that the U.S. electorate had swung wildly to the left, never to swing back, just as the Gramscian brainwashers had been planning and implementing for the last 50 or more years.

Ooops

And then November 8, 2016 happened, and BOOM: It was all revealed to be a lie. Not only did the indoctrination fail, but the general impression that the relentless indoctrination had always been successful was itself a gigantic meta-deception.

All the chatter and statistics and talk show “experts” proclaiming that America had forever swung Democratic? ALL LIES.

All the slanted polls, which were intended to convince everyone that Hillary was inevitable? ALL LIES.

The derision of Trump as a ludicrous fringe candidate and his supporters as wild-eyed extremists? ALL LIES.

And it’s not just that they were all lies — they were lies that had no effect. Somehow, without anyone noticing, a majority of the American populace had evolved a new immunity to progressive disinformation.

http://www.zombietime.com/zomblog/?p=2143

Read the whole thing, but the take way: This election exposed the failure of SIX DECADES of leftist propaganda to have any cumulative effect at all.

I think we are seeing some residual effects in the local area, but I am sure it will dissepate over the next four years

More Global Warming: Snow in the Sahara

The second time in living memory, and the first time in 37 years.

Snow was last seen in the Algerian town of Ain Sefra on February 18, 1979. At that time, the snow storm lasted just half an hour. This time the snow stayed for a day.

Ain Sefra is about 3280 feet (1000 m) above sea level. And remember, Algeria is south of the Mediterranean Sea.See photos:

Thank you for posting that link. It has much food for thought. I would be remiss not to tell you it is a great opinion piece. House of cards? Built on sand? I never looked at it that way. I always considered it carved in stone and the destiny was unalterable. A new way of looking at things and a good explanation of all the cacophony of wailing and gnashing of teeth since Nov. 8th.

This made me laugh. From the Washington Times:

The warrant doesn’t shed very much new light on what agents found, but Mr. Comey said none of if changed their initial finding in the case that Mrs. Clinton did mishandle classified information and did put national security at risk, but was too technologically inept to know the risks she was running.

This did not make me laugh. From another source.

e FBI’s earlier investigation found “27 email chains containing classified information” that were exchanged between Clinton and Abedin, and investigators wanted to see what was also on the Abedin-Weiner laptop, according to the government affidavit unsealed Tuesday. That laptop, the FBI noted, “was never authorized for the storage or transmission of classified or national defense information,” according to the application for the warrant, which was partially redacted.

The affidavit clearly states that the warrant relates to a “criminal investigation” of Clinton, terminology Clinton’s team previously had disputed.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, President Obama withdrew 115 million acres of the Arctic Ocean and 21 underwater canyons in the Atlantic Ocean from future oil and gas development. The Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act vests the president with the authority to withdraw unleased offshore areas from future oil and gas drilling. President Obama has already used this law to protect Alaska’s Bristol Bay, the Bering Sea, and part of the Chukchi Sea.

Friends of the Earth Climate Campaigner Marissa Knodel issued the following response:

Today’s announcement is a major victory for our oceans and climate. Our offshore areas need permanent protection in the face of Donald Trump’s pledge to expand offshore drilling and his cabinet’s ties to Big Oil. We must afford the same protections to the people of the Gulf of Mexico, which has become an energy sacrifice zone.

Donald Trump’s actions since the election have made clear that he will put Big Oil’s profits above Americans’ public health. No president has ever rescinded a previous president’s permanent withdrawal of offshore areas from oil and gas development. If Donald Trump tries to reverse President Obama’s withdrawals, he will find himself in court.

Yea, with a court of his choosing. He will have at least two appointments in his four years, starting with Scalia's replacement. Ginsberg is about to split a gut with Trump in the WH, she will soon need a replacement.

Everybody has an opinion why Hillary lost. To make it easy for the pundits, here's my take: Cause Hillary ain't Donald J. Trump. Keep it simple. Geeze, instead of asking why Hillary lost, why not ask why Trump won? Same answer. Because Hillary ain't Trump.

This guy seems biased to me. I dunno, I could be wrong and he is just accurate:

"They had a tired old lady who was effectively de-sexed from saturation familiarity whose ultimate rationale could never be defined beyond, 'It's my turn and I am entitled to it, dammit.' The Clinton campaign almost made a silk purse out of a sow's ear," says Drew Nettles, a conservative political consultant with ties to the energy industry. "If someone is to blame, it's HRC. Forty years of sleaze with zero tangible accomplishments. Some of the worst political instincts in recorded history. The charm of an asp and the charisma of a slug. I think Clinton maxed out, given who she is and the moment in which she was running."

Trump Lost CA and NY but Beat Clinton by 3.0 million Outside

Final tally shows Trump lost popular vote by 2.8 million – but he BEAT Clinton by 3 million votes outside of California and New York

Clinton won California by 4.2 million votes and New York by 1.6 million, running up the score in places where she would have won no matter what.

Outside of those two liberal states, Trump was 3 million votes ahead
California alone accounted for more than Clinton's national popular-vote edge

Pelline is now laying claim to the phrase "You just can't make this stuff up". He is taking George Boardman to task for using it and therefore plagiarizing Pelline. You just can't make this stuff up. I have used that phrase for twenty years! And I saw if in a letter to the editor by someone I don't know! That Pelline is truly delusional. And one of my favorite terms over the years has been "What a hoot"> And I see Pelline using it all the time. I do not take credit for it and could care less he uses it. But he doe not like Boardman's use of "his" term. What a hoot! The man is buts!

Good column by Mr. Boardman again.

May be a few days early, but my vote for the biggest story of the year hands down is the national disgrace and shame that was brought down on the charming village of Nevada City. Perhaps full blown outrage may be a more descriptive reaction from sea to shining sea. The only question remaining in this revealing, yet unfortunate episode is, "Thus forcing us to ask ourselves, who is benefiting from this? THAT's the answer I want to get to,” she said..

Perhaps the best starting point to answer the councilwoman's question would be at the feet of noneother than President Obama. Early in his Presidency, he expressed anger and racial bias before the facts were even in....his comment revealed distain for LE when his friend the Absent Minded Professor Olgetree (?) misplaced his keys and was breaking in the backdoor of a (his) house in middle of the night. Obama's statements gave the ok to unleash anger against police, a signal that was picked up and cheered by BLM.....a group Obama has had as frequent guests at the White House.

Don Bessee

Here is one for PE- The gun control capitol of the US, Chicago has to date 4752 shooting victims. A 47% raise from 2015. Its not about more gun control, its about weak governance failing to enforce the law and failing to fight gangsters and their rackets. Way to go team 0, no wonder 0 is not moving back home. ;-)

Todd Juvinall

I agree with BillT. The Senum tirade against the police was the biggest story of the year in the county.

Don Bessee

She certainly put Nevada City on the map for ALL the WRONG reasons. By the metric of international media attention she owns the biggest story line. ;-)

Bill Tozer

Statewide, legalization of marijuana may be the biggest story, albeit we all knew this was coming and surprised no one. Still, a big story. The San Bernardino massacre of 14 people happened on 12/02/2015, being just 12 months ago, but did not happen in 2016. I have often wondered how the 22 people injured are doing. We remember the number of those murdered at the Holiday Party (and the other shootings like at the Pulse), but fail to dwell on the 22 wounded, some paralyzed or wheelchair bound for life.

The national Story of the Year may be that Dems reelected as Minority Leader after losing at net of 1,030 state, governor, and Congressional seats under her watch. That is mind blowing. Or, maybe the story is the Clinton Machine was finally defeated against all odds. A impossible task as the Machine had the highest levels of government, the MSM, foreign powers. Kings, world leaders, Shieks, and Wall Street all in their back pocket.

Or, perhaps Briexit was the big story as it portended the rest of the year and the next year.

Bill Tozer

Opps. Reelected Queen Botox as House Minority Leader.....what is she now, 80 or 89? :)

Paul Emery

No Todd the Reinette story has a short shelf life. Beyond a doubt the biggest story locally of the year is the complete routing of Measure W (60-40 no) add the Blue takeover in Nevada County with the big win in District 1 with Heidi Hall and the strong support for Hillary over Trump and support for Measure 64, There are now more registered Dems than Repubs so this is officially a Blue County. That's a big story because it has lasting value. In two years the Dems will have a majority in the Supes needing only one victory in two races which should be easy because of the candidates that are expected to run.

Todd Juvinall

No Paul, you have it wrong as usual. Hillary won a plurality not a majority. But Gregory has schooled you on that and you are in denial. Measure W I will give you that one. The democrats have taken over Truckee big time and that explains the plurality in te county. But that 20% indie group is more right than left. Hall won the District One race becasue Duane did not campaign. And you surprise me with your partisan democrat support for a non partisan office. Kinda hypocritical after all your BS about that over the years. And yes, as a state we have lost our minds. More taxes, more regulation but faster on the death penalty! So a mixed bag. Locally, most city council members are R's. Supes, R's. Assemblyman a R. Congressmen, R's. State Senate, R. President R. So try hareder to convince yourself. But with every post you make we see your true allegiance. Socilaist democrtat.

Paul Emery

Todd I called two of the last three Presidentials on the number. Makes me 2 out of 3. You are 1 for 3 Todd.

Nevada County is a Blue County whether you like it or not. Talk to any real estate agent and they will tell you the Retired Republicans are moving out to be closer to hospitals and their kids and they are being replaced by Liberals and Democrats who are attracted to Nevada County because of the environment and culture. That shows in the decline of Republicans who voted in the last election from the Retirement communities. They are still majority Republican but the percent has declined in the last 8 years. Truckee is solid Democrat as is District 1, Nevada City. that leaves only the Grass Valley District 3 and the Ridge-Penn Valley District 4 combo both of which are going to have strong candidates. We are trying to attract Tech industry and it is established thought that those workers are inclined to be Liberal and Democrats.

You won't accept this but who cares.

Todd Juvinall

One for three? Explain where you came up with that. You are a socialist democrat Paul Emery and you are in denial. You have lost most of your races and are overblown a couple you won. I kicked your ass in 1994 and it was oh so sweet. I got Bush twice, his dad and two Reagan's. You have lost way more than me. Nevada county has a plurality of democrats and mainly caused by Truckee. I really don't care about what you are caring about. We on the right own the elected offices and you can't hack it. Reinette is the biggest story as she accused our brave cops of being assassins and you support her. Go ahead.

Paul Emery

Gregory is wrong. I don't need his tutoring on this one. Doesn't matter anyway. Todd will have to accept this reality in two years when the Dems have a majority on the Supes. Dan Miller is not very popular and only won by 200 four years ago and has done little to gain new followers especially when he said "anyone who opposed Measure W was an idiot" or words to that effect. "W" lost by 20 points district so I guess he has a majority of voters he considers idiots in his district.

The Ridge and Penn Valley are deeply invested in Cannibus agriculture and will pick a candidate accordingly. Measure w lost by 15 in Penn Valley. the only area in that district to support W was Wildwood and that was only by around 5%.

Looks grim Todd for the Republicans. the tide has turned in Nevada County. No point in continuing the discussion at this point.

Don Bessee

PE- @ 822- That's kind of pathetic my friend. ;-)

Paul Emery

I don't recall supporting Reinette Todd on this issue . You're making that up. Can you show me one example of me supporting Reinette on this issue. I don;t recall ever making a public statement on this issue. Take the time to support your statement or shut up.

Todd Juvinall

Paul Emery, grim? No, I am a very happy R and so is the nation. You are simply a disgruntled socialist democrat. I understand your fear. I too was in the wilderness for the last eight years. But now is your turn.

Gregory

Paul, Hillary didn't crack 50% in Nevada County: Yes or no?

You spent the last year making one wrong prediction after another: yes or no?

You're batting .000 in the political prediction sweepstakes.

Time will tell regarding the long term viability of quasi-legal pot growing; the more legal it is, the closer pot profit margins will be to really fine heirloom tomato growing, or Tribidrag grapes.

Paul Emery

Doesn't matter Gregory. She got the most votes of any candidate. If she was funning for office in Nevada
County she would have won. Nevada County voted blue on the Presidential election. Time for you to accept that.

Paul Emery

Trump sure does surround himself with classey assocoates. This is from his New York campaign co-chair Carl Paladino.

The New York co-chair of President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign made racist and sexist comments about first lady Michelle Obama in a recent interview, suggesting that she was really a man and should live in Africa.

In an interview with ArtVoice published Friday, Carl Paladino said that in 2017 the thing he would most like to see go away was Michelle Obama.

“I’d like her to return to being a male and let loose in the outback of Zimbabwe where she lives comfortably in a cave with Maxie, the gorilla,” he said.

Asked what he would like to see happen in 2017, Paladino wished death on President Barack Obama and Valerie Jarrett, one of Obama’s senior advisers.

“Obama catches mad cow disease after being caught having relations with a Herford [sic]. He dies before his trial and is buried in a cow pasture next to Valerie Jarret [sic], who died weeks prior, after being convicted of sedition and treason, when a Jihady [sic] cell mate mistook her for being a nice person and decapitated her,” Paladino said.

Todd Juvinall

If you remove the Truckee precincts Hillary did not win so Gregory is right. Paul Emery is a socialist democrat. I don't see him defending Gary Johnson here, only the commie.

Paul Emery

Hillary won three districts in Nevada County Todd. She won by 5% over Trump which is considered a landslide. Carried Truckee, Nevada City and Grass Valley districts.
Nevada County is a Blue County Todd. Deal with it or move north. Lots of good deals in Modoc County where you'll feel more comfortable with the politics.

Todd Juvinall

Paul Emery, you keep trying to put lipstick on a pig and call it Madonna. She won a plurality and the democrats, without Truckee are still in the minority.

Todd Juvinall

Some fool mentioned me in his OP-ED in today's Union. I am looking for the point in my writings. So far I can't. And the bloke was chastising our side for false news! You cannot make this stuff up! LOL!

Speaking of defending the Commie Todd it's your guy Trump that considers Putin a great guy.

"Will he become my new best friend?" Trump asked of Putin in a tweet wondering whether Putin would attend the 2013 Miss Universe pageant Trump brought to Moscow.

"I think the biggest thing we have is that we were on '60 Minutes' together and we had fantastic ratings. One of your best-rated shows in a long time," Trump joked. "So that was good, right? So we were stable mates."
Trump said he and Putin "are very different," but that they would "get along very well."

"I got to know him very well because we were both on '60 Minutes,' we were stablemates, and we did very well that night," Trump said, despite the fact that he and Putin had been interviewed in separate countries at different times for the same news program.

"It is always a great honor to be so nicely complimented by a man so highly respected within his own country and beyond," Trump said in a statement.

Paul, barely (47/43) winning isn't much of a local mandate, isn't a "landslide" victory by any stretch of the imagination, and there wasn't much in the way of meaningful contests for GOP voters to get excited about. No chance to make a difference for President, and a choice between a Democrat and a Democrat for Senate. Safe seats for State pols. How many didn't even show up?

Regarding "classey assocoates [sic]"... it looks like you're batting .000 for spelling, too. No one is standing by Paladino, who's part of the Buffalo NY contingent. So much for guilt by association, Paul.

Todd writes:

"democrats, without Truckee are still in the minority."

Do your homework Todd. You're flat wrong. Hillary carried Nevada City and Grass Valley easily.

Gregory

Paul 823, there are no precinct returns at that link so it doesn't refute Todd. Try a'gin.

Paul Emery

Well both of you should have checked when they were available. You shouldn't open you mouth if you don't know what you're talking about. Call Diaz (NC Elections) . I'm sure he'll straighten you out.

Well both of you should have checked when they were available.

How thoughtless of Todd and Greg to not have reviewed the materials that support your argument in advance.

Todd Juvinall

Paul Emery, I checked every document you listed and there is not one of them that says anything of which you claim. You are the fake news guy of Nevada County. I have asked for a precinct by precinct database from Diaz. You claim Hillary won GV, NC and Truckee yet there is no page in this link that says that. So where di you get your info?

Paul Emery

That's your problem Todd. Call elections if you doubt me. I've done my homework or I wouldn,t have put this up. There are probably charts that are no longer online. It was established news in the day.

Todd Juvinall

No Paul Emery, you just made up some fake news and tried to foist it on the readers here. You are no better than the mainstream media in all this. You supplied the link and said it showed the cities voted Hillary. Yet it is not there. So you are simply not a believable media person. Try harder.

Paul Emery

Todd, Gregory

Check this out

Todd Juvinall

OK, I went there and it is pretty cool. I added p all the Truckee area votes and here are the totals. And it backs me up.

Hillary 4722 71%
Trump 1862 29%
Difference 2860 and the total diffence on election night was 2600

So you see the Truckee area contains the difference in votes for the county registration numbers. Gosh Paul, sorry to bash your fake news.

Paul Emery

Todd

Hillary won District 1 and carried Grass Valley. I'll get you the exact numbers.

Paul Emery

Todd

You're not taking into account the large Trump numbers in the south county that was countered by big Hillary numbers in Nevada City and Grass Valley.

Todd Juvinall

Paul Emery, I don't dispute Hillary won NC and GV and District One. They are the core liberal bastions. Always were. My election and then DaveT and ChristineF and later NateB (All R's)show district One can vary. Van Zant was a outlier. Now we have liberal Hall.

Nevada County reminds me of the national election somewhat. Libs in the city, R's in the country.

Gregory

Todd Juvinall

Grass Valley has always been a D District but just last time they voted Dan Miller, a conservative R. So Paul Emery, explain that would you please?

Paul Emery

Easy to explain. He ran against Terry Lamphier who was a controversial candidate even then. Dan brought years of public service on the City Council to the election. Correct me if I'm wrong but I recall Dan only won by a couple hundred votes.

Todd Juvinall

Oh please. YUou claim a blue district and it is owned by a R. Come on you can do better than that.

Paul Emery

What I believe Todd is that Nevada County is going through a change of demographics as I detailed earlier. Nevada City and Truckee districts are solid Dem as we speak and GV is ready to flip in the next election. I mean we've had Jim Weir, Dem Fran Gratten Repub, Bruce Conklin Dem, Drew Bedwell Repub, John Spencer Repub, Terry Lamphier Dem, Dan Miller Repub

Probably left a couple out. this is all from Memory.

GV flips around like no other District. In my view it's ready to go Dem next time around. GV retail interests campaigned against W because of the drastic effects on retail banning cultivation would cause. |That is likely to be a big issue in two years as well

I am not expressing a personal preference in this matter only observing and speculating on the parade.

Gregory

Golly, Paul, aren't those *non* partisan orifices?

Hate to mention it, but political races don't follow predetermined sequences... Dems and GOP candidates really don't think they're a cinch because it's their turn, unless, of course, they're delusional, like Hillary Clinton.

Paul Emery

Gregory

This is only my opinion which I base on observations of current events and trends with a consideration of recent history. I have been following local elections since the mid 80's which does give me a bit of perspective on current events.

Supes Non Partisan? Sure Greg. Do you really believe that?

Todd Juvinall

NC, GV and Truckee are always democrat Paul. What kept the county red was the rural areas. I was whipped good both times by the voters of NC but still won as we moved out and ended in Chicago Park. That held until Van Zant. Then back to a R until Hall. I remember when Karsten Hansen won by 8 votes over Marianne Slade-Troutman. I think he beat her again by 13. He was a very conservative man of GV.

You can guess all you want but you and yours were wiped out at most all levels up tp President. I am a happy guy. Your picking winners for the future is ridiculous.

Paul Emery

Yeah I was whipped pretty good. Gary Johnson was a dud second time around.

The other issue that was important to me was Prop 64 won big and earlier Measure W lost in a landslide.

NC, GV and Truckee are three out of five districts Todd. Glad you finally agree with me that Nevada County is a Blue County.

Todd Juvinall

Paul Emery, where did I agree? You always out words in other peoples mouths. And GV, NC and Truckee outside of the city limits are not blue. You must have not read my post.

Todd you must have not looked at the voting map I provided you. If you did you would have seen that Hillary won in almost all of District 1 and the Grass VAlley district 3 with the exception of a large very rural area between here and Truckee. Trump won in the south county a Penn Valley and Wildwood.

Once again for your viewing pleasure

Todd Juvinall

Paul Emery, you keep repeating yourself. I have answered you three times on that. Are you OK?

Paul Emery

You keep claiming that Nevada County is not a Blue County because the Reds control the countryside in District 1 and 3 which is categorically not true

Paul Emery

On a different topic Trump could be in big trouble if he dumps NAFTA, one of his campaign promises. According to Dan Ikenson, director of the trade policy center at the free-market Cato Institute.

“There could be some tectonic shifts, “The slightest hint that things are going to be disrupted could cause capital flight from the U.S.”

From Politico:

"Trump’s contempt for NAFTA has been a cornerstone of his message to the working-class voters who elected him. The pact was forged by an earlier generation of Republican leaders, including President George H.W. Bush, Secretary of State James Baker and U.S. Trade Representative Carla Hills, before being signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1994.

But few business groups are clamoring for a renegotiation, and many are warning that Trump’s threat to withdraw from NAFTA will actually cause the loss of millions of industrial jobs instead of saving them."

Don Bessee

Sure 406 PE, we see that capitol flight tanking the markets, oh wait, the markets are making record after record. You so funny PE. ;-)
