Bill Tozer

I do have a soft spot for liberal writers who use their brains as well as their sense of discernment. A rare breed.

http://www.tennessean.com/story/opinion/columnists/2017/02/04/wave-illiberalism-present-liberal-quarters-today/97407608/

BradC

BillT - I like this quote, "Liberalism, as I see it, is about going wherever facts and reason take you and about changing one’s mind when new facts present themselves, and not about having dogmas and defending them till you are blue in the face."

Just change the word 'liberalism' with 'open-mindedness'.

Too many blogs/echo chambers are more about this, "having dogmas and defending them till you are blue in the face."

Bill Tozer

Scott Adams:
Yesterday I asked my most liberal, Trump-hating friend if he ever figured out why Republicans have most of the Governorships, a majority in Congress, the White House, and soon the Supreme Court. He said, “There are no easy answers.”

I submit that there are easy answers. But for many Americans, cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias hide those easy answers behind Hitler hallucinations.

Gary Smith

Calexit is a slap in the face to our California Veterans who died fighting for our country. I think of my 2nd great-grandfather who fought in the Civil War with the 1st Maine Cavalry and is buried in San Mateo County. He was very involved with the Grand Army of the Republic in S.F., a fraternal Civil War veterans group. He was very proud of his service in protecting the Union against the breakaway states.
The uproar by some over the State of Jefferson movement and how silent these same people are over Calexit is perplexing to me.

Bill Tozer

Gary Smith.

One should not be perplexed. As I understand it, the State of Jefferson's purpose is to create a new state within the United States, a 51st state if you will. Calexit's purpose is to secede from the United States and renounce US citizenship of her residents. Big difference between creating a new state within the US and creating a new independent country separated from the USA, IMHO.

Bill Tozer

Gary Smith, sorry I misread your post. The perplexing part is the duplicity. After awhile, one grows accustomed to it.

Paul Emery

Re-posted for your conveniance

Trump mouth may have reacted an all time low with this exchange on O'Reilly:

"He's a killer though. Putin is a killer," O'Reilly told the president.

"There's a lot of killers," Trump replied. "What, you think our country is so innocent?"

Remarkable response from Gen Barry McCaffrey

Ret. Gen. said President Trump telling Bill O'Reilly that the U.S. is not "innocent" in a discussion about Putin being a killer is one of the most anti-American statements he has ever heard.

"One could argue that's the most anti-American statement ever made by the president of the United States, to confuse American values with Putin," the retired general said Monday on MSNBC.

George Rebane

Re GaryS 1212pm - What appears to us as duplicity is a built-in feature of liberal argument if not their logic. As Mr Tozer points out, tolerating such duplicities is an acquired skill, more needed to allay hypertension than change errant minds.

Paul Emery

Ha......"Sometime in next year...

Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly asked Trump in an interview before the Super Bowl if Americans can “expect a new healthcare plan rolled out by the Trump Administration this year.”

“Yes, in the process and maybe it’ll take till sometime into next year but we’re certainly going to be in the process,” Trump replied.

“You have to remember Obamacare doesn’t work so we are putting in a wonderful plan,” he added.

Bill Tozer

Interesting how the Sanctuary Cities will work out. Probably not much can or will be done for a couple of years.

RE Calexit-State of Jefferson

In my view Calexit is a small insignificant group but The State Jefferson represents a significant minority of Cal citizens and deserves a hearing. I have conducted sever interviews on the News by supporters of the movement.

What the light-thinking Trumpians don't seem to be able to understand is that people come in by boat, airplane, or the Canadian border - as well as the proposed location of the Great Wall of Trump. The Wall and Radical Islam Extreme Vetting publicity stunts are nothing more than that.

Re: Trump Towering Wall - can you say 'underground tunnel'?

BradC

Re: SOJ vs. Calexit - "The uproar by some over the State of Jefferson movement and how silent these same people are over Calexit is perplexing..."

It should not be perplexing once you realize that the uproar by 'some people' over SOJ are not necessarily the same people who are chanting 'Calexit'.

I have no reason to comment pro or against Calexit because I don't take Calexit seriously. Calexiters are just taking their cues from SOJers whom are also delusional.

George Rebane

BradC 248pm - That sounds like you may be a proponent of 'if we can't solve the whole problem all at once, then we should not solve any part of it'. But all kidding aside, the Canadian border problem is totally different from the Mexican side, and we have no idea how many terrorists have arrived from either side. All we have is some good estimates of the large numbers coming in from the south. Since Canadians populate and monitor their border with us, it is hard for large numbers to come in from that side. And no one has claimed that it is not possible for terrorists to arrive from places other than Mexico. (Recall, that illegal aliens from Mexico also present problems beyond terrorism.)

Gregory

BradC, your 248 is nonsensical as the "exteme vetting" is for visa seekers from states designated by the Obama Administration as the seven with unusually active terrorist activities within. Not Canada or Mexico.

Obama's plan was for 110,000 refugees in FY2017 which started last October. Trump is blunting that.
http://time.com/4501924/barack-obama-refugee-increase-united-nations/

Paul "Punchy" Emery... nice to see you like Rasmussen now. Gallup not giving you numbers bad enough? Rass's total approve is 53%, not bad considering 96% of journalists opposed him.

Paul Emery

Gregory

Rasmussen is the only poll showing Trump support and even on that poll it's declining. Gallup is the standard that has been consistent since Truman allowing comparisons which show Trump by far the least supported President at this stage since Truman.

Gregory

Paul, Gallup has Obama's overall average as 47.9, nothing to brag about, and Trump's rass numbers are pretty steady.

Again, Gallup basic report is all respondents, not the likely voters of the Rasmussen presidential approval poll.

There is PLENTY of money the FEDS can hold back. Yet Moonbat and minions still say "he can't do this! He can't do that!" Well, time will tell. Harboring fugitives, no matter what the crime, is still a crime in itself. Immigration is a FED issue. "O" and Co. made that clear. Remember when states tried to enforce immigration laws? They got shot down in court.
The knife cuts both ways.

Gregory

Punchy, I actually visit Rasmussen and Gallup for my info, preferring original sources. Tell me if you really can't find them... in fact, the Rasmussen overall 53% is from a link you provided but you were focused on a number that you thought made your point; it didn't, but what else is new?.

Paul Emery

Gregory follow this link and tell me what you find. Thanks

Hey, at least she doesn't think that Guam is going to tip over.

Gregory

Punchy 707, one reason is that Rasmussen is a likely voters poll and Gallup is not.

How many more times do you want to hear that?

Paul Emery

But you said Gallup is 47.9 percent. Where did you get that number?

ScenesFromTheApocalypse

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/latest_polls/

Gregory

Punchy 722, I said Gallup had Obama's 8 year average as 47.9%. If you wish to challenge my veracity (a $5 word for truthiness) and are willing to provide a sealed, new 750ml bottle of Lagavulin if I substantiate it with a link, I'll be happy to comply.

Paul Emery

You've changed the topic to Obama My point is that trump is an all time low for beginning a term Gallup is the only poll that tracks back to Truman. Your Obama number is irrelevant to that topic.

Paul, I clearly identified the number that confused you as the Obama average, and you have been absolutely glowing over the Obama final number. It's fair game and, sad to say, you do not have the power to demand anyone dance to your calling of the tune.

Are you looking forward to Gorsuch being confirmed?

Paul Emery

So you affirm that you dodge the topic.

Paul Emery

The topic being that I have illustrated is that trumps approval ratings are an all time low for starting a term ant those numbers are declining

Paul Emery

Borsch? Predictable. For the dems it's what happens when you lose an election

Paul Emery

Gregory

Not dodging, Punchy... just bored. It's a meaningless poll, verifies the populace is getting the news the NY Times and Frisco Chronicle wants to print. Can you identify other presidents elected despite 96% of journalists being against them, and continuing the campaign even after the inauguration? Or campaigns to scare musicians away from working the inaugural balls?

I get it, you don't want to talk about the real issues. Gorsuch doesn't hold your interest. What about judges in WA taking over foreign policy?

Gregory

Watching this morning's Morning Joe right now... and they're expecting the real Trump approval is now about 48% and identified it as a number Obama would have been happy with through much of his reign.

Paul Emery

What poll is that number from Gregory (Morning Joe)
I'm surprised you have a problem with the Judaical branch of our government testing the Constitutionality of Trumps executive order on immigration. I thought you supported the Constitution.

Walt

All within Trump's Presidential powers.
Where were you when "O" was doing it?

Walt

Is it not the role of the Judiciary to question those powers and render an opinion if there is a potential question? Is that not the intent of the Constitution?

From the always invaluable Instapundit.....

SENATOR AL FRANKEN: DeVos ‘fundamentally incompetent’ to lead Education Dept.

“During her hearing, Ms. DeVos proved beyond a shadow of a doubt not only that her ideology is fundamentally incompatible with the mission of the Department of Education, but that she is fundamentally incompetent to be its leader,” Franken said Monday from the Senate floor.

“This is not a job for amateurs,” the former “Saturday Night Live” comedian added.

I’ll just leave that last line lying there as we segue to Kevin Williamson:

On the merits, the Democrats do not have much of a case against Betsy DeVos, Tom Price, or Steven Mnuchin. The Democrats are making a dishonest argument (Do they make any other kind?), most intensely against DeVos, that being “qualified” for an office means agreeing with the Democrats on substantive policy questions. DeVos has spent most of her adult life working on education-reform projects, and the fact that these projects are based on policy positions at odds with those of most Democrats is not a question of qualification — it is a question of whether the president is entitled to nominate to the agencies officials who reflect his views.

He is.

Oh Al....you will always be the drunken baggage handler on the train in "Trading Places" to me.

Paul Emery. Trump is draining the swamp. The swamp dwellers don't like it. His poll numbers are immaterial. He is doing what he promised and what the voters asked him to do. He is going to piss off lots of people before he is done. He doesn't care and his supporters don't care. Your obsession with his poll numbers is really odd, especially in light of your obsession with the polls before the election and loudly proclaiming he would never win. You have no credibility. Ever think about discussing something that matters?

Paul Emery

Thanks for your concern about me Bonnie. I'm not much of a drinker though.

George Rebane

re PaulE's 951pm - Yes, when there is a clear point of law or constitutional issue at stake, the judiciary is brought in to adjudicate what the Legislative or Executive branch has done. But the plaintiffs themselves in the suits have made no such case, nor has the judge included that factor in his ruling. On the lamestream even ex-SecState Albright, co-signatory of letter denouncing Trump's temporary ban, admitted that the protest case is based on a policy disagreement and not on a point of law. You can expect our progressives readers to be silent about this aspect of what's in front of the Ninth Circus today.

Paul Emery

Well that's an opinion George. Others have differing views. There is no doubt in my my mind Trumps intentions are for a Muslim ban. That was well documented by Trump during his campaign. The Constitutionality of that is what courts are for, sorting these things out.

George Rebane

PaulE 845am - It also happens to be the opinion of the judge issuing the stay. The "opinion" you cite is based on the Constitution and explicit reading of standing US Code Section 1182(f). Now, can you recall what the counter-opinions cite for their claim for a legal basis? More here -
http://www.nationalreview.com/article/444371/donald-trump-executive-order-ban-entry-seven-muslim-majority-countries-legal

Gregory

Waking up with the power on is more fun than going to sleep with the power failed, the reason for my delay here.

Paul, the Constitution does not give a judge in the hinterlands the right to direct immigration policy. It's a separation of powers issue (those are defined in the constitution also, Paul) usurped by a progressive judge backed up by the most liberal of all the circuit courts. The president is granted by the constitution and statute virtual dictatorial power over which, if any, foreign nationals can cross into the USA.

You'd better hope (beyond the usual humanitarian reasons), that in the wake of this, an ISIS sympathizer from an Obama 7 country doesn't commit a violent act or Trump will gain a great deal.

Political power seized by an unelected judge with a lifetime job is as bad as judicial or legislative power usurped by an out of control executive. Maybe worse.

This will work itself out. Might not get right until Gorsuch is in, unless at least one of the justices on the left decide to pay attention to the text of the Constitution over their own senses of social justice. In related news, there are four judicial vacancies in the Ninth Circuit that Trump will be free to fill in the next month without fear of a filibuster from Senate Democrats, thanks to Reid's Nuclear option. DiFi thinks it's an emergency to block nominees that might be closer to Scalia than Ginsberg.

We live in interesting times.

Sure...ask Betsy DeVos And Her Family. Direct cash contributions from her family to the Senators that voted for her is not pay to play right?

"One thing that could come to her aid is that she and the entire DeVos family are massive Republican Party donors who helped fund the election of the remaining senators who will decide her fate.

Big donors often get positions in government, ambassadorships or ceremonial titles, but rarely do they come as big as DeVos. Sitting Republican senators have received $115,000 from Betsy DeVos herself, and more than $950,000 from the full DeVos clan since 1980. In the past two election cycles alone, her family has donated $8.3 million to Republican Party super PACs."

More polling reports on the status of Free Fall Trump. Down to -12. 12% fall since inauguration (two weeks). Two point drop since yesterday. Unprecedented low polling for a new Pres and he's still falling lower every day.

....still president Paul.

Punchy, that is wonderful news. Thank you for sharing.

“What matters is what families and students think about having a change agent in this position,” Janine Yass argues in a Washington Examiner op-ed. “If you judge from the tens of thousands of families on waiting lists for charter schools and for scholarships in private schools it is apparent that poor families are desperate for someone who will fight for them for a change.” Yass also scolded the media for ignoring “the faces of the millions of families and students who have been the victims of bad education policy.”

Sadly, Democrats and their media cohorts are more interested in protecting what they accurately consider the Holy Grail, because indoctrination masqueraded as education is the pathway to statism. And Americans are fed up with it. Thankfully, with the help of DeVos' agenda, they will be ignored no more."

Yep, she is a bad one for sure. Filthy rich donor too boot. Well, if we can get our weakest nominee through, there ain't no stopping the Deplorables now. Next up: Trying Soros for treason. Be afraid, be very afraid. The sky is falling!
