[Mr George Boardman, our beloved compatriot debater and member of The Union's considerable cadre of leftwing columnists, has again declared his true colors in today's 'Who's behind Calexit?' Therein he presents a pernicious conspiracy theory, blaming the whole movement on those dastardly conservatives. "It appears to me that Calexit is being funded and supported by shadowy forces that are less interested in ridding California of its tormentors than makings the rest of the U.S. permanently red. That’s why Breitbart News and Infowars haven’t exposed this threat to the American Way of Life." Calexit a threat to the American Way of Life??!! Aside from that little bit of humor, my real question for our readers is what possible "Observations for(sic) the center stripe" can Mr Boardman hope to offer? Perhaps he can expand on both claims. gjr]
I do have a soft spot for liberal writers who use their brains as well as their sense of discernment. A rare breed.

BillT - I like this quote, "Liberalism, as I see it, is about going wherever facts and reason take you and about changing one’s mind when new facts present themselves, and not about having dogmas and defending them till you are blue in the face."
Just change the word 'liberalism' with 'open-mindedness'.
Too many blogs/echo chambers are more about this, "having dogmas and defending them till you are blue in the face."

Scott Adams:
Yesterday I asked my most liberal, Trump-hating friend if he ever figured out why Republicans have most of the Governorships, a majority in Congress, the White House, and soon the Supreme Court. He said, “There are no easy answers.”
I submit that there are easy answers. But for many Americans, cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias hide those easy answers behind Hitler hallucinations.

Calexit is a slap in the face to our California Veterans who died fighting for our country. I think of my 2nd great-grandfather who fought in the Civil War with the 1st Maine Cavalry and is buried in San Mateo County. He was very involved with the Grand Army of the Republic in S.F., a fraternal Civil War veterans group. He was very proud of his service in protecting the Union against the breakaway states.
The uproar by some over the State of Jefferson movement and how silent these same people are over Calexit is perplexing to me.
Posted by: Gary Smith | 06 February 2017 at 12:12 PM
Gary Smith.
One should not be perplexed. As I understand it, the State of Jefferson's purpose is to create a new state within the United States, a 51st state if you will. Calexit's purpose is to secede from the United States and renounce US citizenship of her residents. Big difference between creating a new state within the US and creating a new independent country separated from the USA, IMHO.

Gary Smith, sorry I misread your post. The perplexing part is the duplicity. After awhile, one grows accustomed to it.

Trump mouth may have reacted an all time low with this exchange on O'Reilly:
"He's a killer though. Putin is a killer," O'Reilly told the president.
"There's a lot of killers," Trump replied. "What, you think our country is so innocent?"
Remarkable response from Gen Barry McCaffrey
Ret. Gen. said President Trump telling Bill O'Reilly that the U.S. is not "innocent" in a discussion about Putin being a killer is one of the most anti-American statements he has ever heard.
"One could argue that's the most anti-American statement ever made by the president of the United States, to confuse American values with Putin," the retired general said Monday on MSNBC.

Ha......"Sometime in next year...
Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly asked Trump in an interview before the Super Bowl if Americans can “expect a new healthcare plan rolled out by the Trump Administration this year.”
“Yes, in the process and maybe it’ll take till sometime into next year but we’re certainly going to be in the process,” Trump replied.
“You have to remember Obamacare doesn’t work so we are putting in a wonderful plan,” he added.

It should not be perplexing once you realize that the uproar by 'some people' over SOJ are not necessarily the same people who are chanting 'Calexit'.
I have no reason to comment pro or against Calexit because I don't take Calexit seriously. Calexiters are just taking their cues from SOJers whom are also delusional.

BradC 248pm - That sounds like you may be a proponent of 'if we can't solve the whole problem all at once, then we should not solve any part of it'. But all kidding aside, the Canadian border problem is totally different from the Mexican side, and we have no idea how many terrorists have arrived from either side. All we have is some good estimates of the large numbers coming in from the south. Since Canadians populate and monitor their border with us, it is hard for large numbers to come in from that side. And no one has claimed that it is not possible for terrorists to arrive from places other than Mexico. (Recall, that illegal aliens from Mexico also present problems beyond terrorism.)

Obama's plan was for 110,000 refugees in FY2017 which started last October. Trump is blunting that.

Rasmussen is the only poll showing Trump support and even on that poll it's declining. Gallup is the standard that has been consistent since Truman allowing comparisons which show Trump by far the least supported President at this stage since Truman.

Paul, Gallup has Obama's overall average as 47.9, nothing to brag about, and Trump's rass numbers are pretty steady.
Again, Gallup basic report is all respondents, not the likely voters of the Rasmussen presidential approval poll.

He is going to piss off lots of people before he is done. He doesn't care and his supporters don't care. Your obsession with his poll numbers is really odd, especially in light of your obsession with the polls before the election and loudly proclaiming he would never win. You have no credibility. re PaulE's 951pm - Yes, when there is a clear point of law or constitutional issue at stake, the judiciary is brought in to adjudicate what the Legislative or Executive branch has done. But the plaintiffs themselves in the suits have made no such case, nor has the judge included that factor in his ruling. On the lamestream even ex-SecState Albright, co-signatory of letter denouncing Trump's temporary ban, admitted that the protest case is based on a policy disagreement and not on a point of law. You can expect our progressives readers to be silent about this aspect of what's in front of the Ninth Circus today.
Posted by: George Rebane | 07 February 2017 at 08:33 AM
Well that's an opinion George. Others have differing views. There is no doubt in my my mind Trumps intentions are for a Muslim ban. That was well documented by Trump during his campaign. The Constitutionality of that is what courts are for, sorting these things out.
Posted by: Paul Emery | 07 February 2017 at 08:45 AM
PaulE 845am - It also happens to be the opinion of the judge issuing the stay. The "opinion" you cite is based on the Constitution and explicit reading of standing US Code Section 1182(f). Now, can you recall what the counter-opinions cite for their claim for a legal basis? More here -

Waking up with the power on is more fun than going to sleep with the power failed, the reason for my delay here.
Paul, the Constitution does not give a judge in the hinterlands the right to direct immigration policy. It's a separation of powers issue (those are defined in the constitution also, Paul) usurped by a progressive judge backed up by the most liberal of all the circuit courts. The president is granted by the constitution and statute virtual dictatorial power over which, if any, foreign nationals can cross into the USA.
You'd better hope (beyond the usual humanitarian reasons), that in the wake of this, an ISIS sympathizer from an Obama 7 country doesn't commit a violent act or Trump will gain a great deal.
Political power seized by an unelected judge with a lifetime job is as bad as judicial or legislative power usurped by an out of control executive. Maybe worse.
This will work itself out. Might not get right until Gorsuch is in, unless at least one of the justices on the left decide to pay attention to the text of the Constitution over their own senses of social justice. In related news, there are four judicial vacancies in the Ninth Circuit that Trump will be free to fill in the next month without fear of a filibuster from Senate Democrats, thanks to Reid's Nuclear option. DiFi thinks it's an emergency to block nominees that might be closer to Scalia than Ginsberg.
We live in interesting times.

Paul, DeVos is the GOP darling because she is seen as a cudgel against the teacher's unions who are the Dem's cash cow.
GOP readers should not celebrate her all that much because she really has no great ideas besides parental choice, which is good but not sufficient for good K-12 education. In particular, she seems to support the same inquiry based, child based classrooms that have led to failure in the first place.

Gregory 948am - Given the pile of crap that covers our public education system, I am still happy about the advent of DeVos - let's clean it up one shovelful at a time.

This will have to be enough in the short term.

Let's see if this is the beginning of the end of the indoctrination of the young'ns.

The GOP and Trump should be happy their weakest Cabinet appointee got in, thanks to Harry Reid's Nuclear Option.
It would have been a home run for Harry had his Democratic Caliphate come to power last November but it's Hillary's handpicked opponent, DJT, who got the benefit. Sweet irony.

The Local Loopy Left is exposed. They will fight to the death for open borders. No middle ground, straight up let everybody in. Immigration control and being a sovereign nation is antithetical to everything they believe.
"We are not safe until all of us are safe. We are not human until all of us are human."
HH, 88. The Union.
Wonder if that includes the unborn, conservatives, and American civilians that are targets of jihadists. Just wondering, my sweet adorable child of the Universe.
They are unhinged, but we all knew that. Bush Degrangement Syndrome lives on.

I'll give them this....they sure like their marketing slogans!

Too sweet. Guess Hollywood had yet to wrap their heads around the fact that people don't give a darn what they have to say. They are irreverent living in the echo chamber. And they still believe they have something important to say. This makes my day. :)

Hay Paul. Recall when you made claims that Melania Trump was an illegal?
take note to what happens when bloggers print false accusations.

Drain the swamp?????
Sure...ask Betsy DeVos And Her Family. Direct cash contributions from her family to the Senators that voted for her is not pay to play right?
"One thing that could come to her aid is that she and the entire DeVos family are massive Republican Party donors who helped fund the election of the remaining senators who will decide her fate.
Big donors often get positions in government, ambassadorships or ceremonial titles, but rarely do they come as big as DeVos. Sitting Republican senators have received $115,000 from Betsy DeVos herself, and more than $950,000 from the full DeVos clan since 1980. In the past two election cycles alone, her family has donated $8.3 million to Republican Party super PACs."

More polling reports on the status of Free Fall Trump. Down to -12. 12% fall since inauguration (two weeks). Two point drop since yesterday. Unprecedented low polling for a new Pres and he's still falling lower every day.
