The Trumplet really blew it. Of course big daddy didn't know. Even conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer can't put a smiley on it.

" Contributing editor to the conservative Weekly Standard and Fox News panelist has blasted the defense being offered for the actions of Donald Trump, Jr.

Charles Krauthammer appeared Tuesday on “The Story” with Martha MacCallum and blasted President Donald Trump’s namesake child for his meeting with Kremlin-linked Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya.

“If you get a call to go to a certain place in the middle of the night to pick up stolen goods, and it turns out stolen goods don’t show up but the cops show up, I think you’re going to have a weak story saying, ‘well, I got swindled here,'” Krauthammer explained.

“The denial of collusion is very weak right now because it looks as if Don Junior was receptive to receiving this information,” Krauthammer explained. “It’s a hell of a defense to say your collusion wasn’t competent and it didn’t work out.”

“Come on, that is pathetic,” Krauthamer said of those making excuses for Trump, Jr.

I supported Scott Walker as I knew him and he did a great job in Wisconsin. But he could not raise the money and was one of the first to drop out. What has that to do with CharlesK? You really are unhinged.

ScenesFromTheApocalypse

Hang on a sec, this nothingburger is all about how Trump Jr. was willing to meet a lawyer who he thought was connected somehow to the Russians who might have some dirt on Hillary? I think that releasing the e-mail chain was a good thing. Basically, you are getting treated to a written record of what is essentially a spoken conversation. Stick a mic on anyone for a year and see what you come up with.

God knows what dirt the Russians actually have on Hillary. I expect that it's more than some nonsense about her file handling capabilities or her main aide's ties to the more exotic parts of Arab politics. lol. Just think about how deeply the Saudis or AIPAC are burrowed into US politics, the Russians have barely scratched the surface.

My own guess is that the intelligence agencies on both 'sides' (although it's hard to view the Russians as the other side, the US has little to fight with them over and they are a small, resource-oriented, economic power) have so much dirt that a form of MAD is in effect. If they really let loose, the same would happen here. The end game is that the NSA/GRU actually end up running the whole show since they can blackmail anybody.

ScenesFromTheApocalypse

re: Walt@10:19PM

I had seen that from a different source. It would be easy to come to the conclusion that this whole Russian narrative was cooked up in the waning days of the Obama administration as a kind of counter-battery fire. That's my own suspicion, but it's nothing beyond that. The Paul serves as a kind of reminder of how unhealthy it is to build world views from looking at a little screen in a rural area.

Given that all the political firepower has been applied to the Russians-Are-Coming! fuss, you can argue that it has backfired. Someone with a novel approach to government (unlike the other Republican candidates) is off doing their thing while all the attention is still on campaign behaviors.

ScenesFromTheApocalypse

...finally, one bummer is that now I have to hear about the whole Chalupa/Ukraine/Clinton deal one more time. Team Red will drag it out again, Team Blue will explain how it's really really different, blah blah blah.

One conclusion you can reach is that the media (and the people breathlessly hanging onto this Russiagate stuff) are children. When you are running for emperor, the amount of oppositions research and general dirty doings is phenomenal. Older lineages of power (like the Bush family or Clintons) will have more opportunities due to the hooks they have into the nomenklatura.

Better to argue about policy matters, but at the heart of it my gut feeling is that this is all a fight between the champions and the enemies of Western Civilization. The rest is just details.

Russ

POLITICO/Morning Consult poll asked voters how credible they consider the information they get from various media outlets - and from the president himself.

Here's the rundown:

The White House: 21% very // 31% somewhat // 18% not too // 19% not at all

President Donald Trump: 22% very // 24% somewhat // 13% not too // 33% not at all

CNN: 26% very credible // 28% somewhat credible // 14% not too credible // 23% not credible at all

Fox News: 24% very // 31% somewhat // 18% not too // 19% not at all

MSNBC: 23% very // 31% somewhat // 15% not too // 19% not at all

Washington Post: 24% very // 32% somewhat // 14% not too // 15% not at all

New York Times: 26% very // 31% somewhat // 14% not too // 16% not at all

"Scenes, why are you obsessed with Hillary? Have you heard, she lost the election"

Looking back at the comments here, it's because Trump Jr. was interested in 'the dirt on Hillary', which is the story of the day. I also noted, just as an aside, that their intelligence services are good enough that they probably have far far more damaging things than the trivial shenanigans that came up in the campaign. I also noted that both sides are likely to own weapons grade dirt and that they are held in reserve for an all-out propaganda conflict. If that is what you consider to be obsessed, than either I have to apologize, or perhaps you should try reading the GD comments before your Tourette's syndrome kicks in for one of your ever-insightful posts.

Amazing that at this stage people are still ignorant of what criminal acts Saint Hillary did during the campaign, and the many things of which she has consequently been totally absolved - her halo remains untarnished in the eyes of those who will not see.

Paul Emery

Thanks Michael

Of course they have to show intent to commit a crime which is always the weasel out ot these matters. I was not a Hillary supporter but criminal intent is a hill to climb when going after a public official. I learned that when I brought the Grass Valley School Board to the Grand Jury for obvious violations of the Brown Act. The Grand Jury agreed with me but saw no criminal intent and refused to refer it to the District Attorney.

Why do you think the Trump administration has been so easy on Hillary? It was Trump who led the charge "lock her up" They have perused nothing as far as I can tell.

"The huge danger is that the Russians have a book on Trump and can blackmail him at any time. Do you have any doubt that the Russians have intensive information on Trump and his family that they can trot out any time they want?"

Absolutely. They have the goods on any major political figure. An exception might be someone who is outright crazy (and may well live a faultless life) like Ralph Nader.

Do you think that the US has a 'book on Putin'? Bank transfers, girl friends, recordings? Any other Russian political figures? Chinese? Nigerian?

This is my whole point. What you are hearing about is trivial and (because of that) is probably not state-backed. Seriously, I don't know how much more clear I can be, this is not a subtle point.

re: GeorgeR@10:28AM

In a country where a rule of law was applied to highly influential people, she and hubby would have been in the hoosegow years ago. Outside of somewhere like (maybe) Iceland or possibly modern Switzerland, I'm not sure that that country ever existed.

The real value of this last campaign was tremendous I think. It was finally made obvious to the proles that the fix is always in and that mass media is highly biased. Building up an immune system against political reporting looks to be a precious new commodity. There are huge new opportunities in the op-ed space, given that the NYT appears to have no more gravitas than the KVMR news empire.

What I'd love to see, and I'll include myself in this, is for people to build up domain knowledge in things they pontificate on. Saying that the US should 'have a health system just like Denmark and Singapore' show an almost willful lack of the reality on the ground. Climate science is another canonical example of this, of course.

Congress wrote a specifically target statute to elimaite intent from the equation. Simply possessing classified materials off premises is in itself a crime. Copying off site it is a crime, Huma and Hillary's housekeeper. Among others. One of the few laws where intent is not necessary to prove, making Comey's conclusion that Clinton was so inept, sloppy,, ignorant of Internet matters,, and so careless that nobody could prove intent. But, that's BS. Intent did not have to proven. The Grand Jury should have been convened.. A penalty of violating the Espionage Act is it disqualifies the person from holding public office (Federal) again. The Espionage Act is not simply the part we are familiar with.

But, you knew all that I bet. Look before you leap.

But hey there are poll numbers to generate…..and some people rely desperately on those polls…..for emotional reasons.

The basic formula for every breaking Trump/Russia story is essentially as follows:

1. The New York Times or Washington Post releases an article that at first blush appears extremely damning.

2. Anti-Trump pundits and Democrats react reflexively to the news, express shrieking outrage, and proclaim that this finally proves untoward collusion between Trump and Russia — a smoking gun, at last.

3. Aggrieved former Clinton apparatchiks *connect the dots* in a manner eerily reminiscent of right-wing Glenn Beck-esque prognostication circa 2009.

4. Self-proclaimed legal experts rashly opine as to whether the new revelation entails some kind of criminally actionable offense. (Recall the now-laughable certitude that felled National Security Advisor Mike Flynn violated the 200+ year old Logan Act.) This latest version is the certitude that Jeff Sessions committed perjury, when that at the very least is highly questionable.

(Probably best to at least read the relevant statute first.)

5. The notion of Russian “collusion” being key to toppling Trump becomes further implanted in the minds of the most energized Democratic activists, as evidenced this time around by a troupe of protesters who showed up to the Department of Justice headquarters brandishing trademarked “Resist” placards, chanting “Lock Him Up,” and (as usual) hyperventilating about Putin. As I’ve written before, Trump/Putin theories are increasingly the top concern that plugged-in “Resistance” types bring up at the highly-charged town hall meetings that have received so much attention of late.

6. Pointing out these glaring flaws in the latest anti-Russia frenzy is immediately construed by cynics as “defending Trump” or “defending Sessions” when it most assuredly is not. At least in my own case, it’s a defense of not getting enraptured by irrational hysterics to further short-term political aims.

7. People who’d spent the past 12 hours frothing at the mouth gradually come to realize that their initial furor was probably overblown, and that a more sober look at the actual facts at hand reveal that the anti-Trump chorus probably got ahead of itself…again.

8. Democrats who sought to capitalize on the uproar end up looking extremely foolish.

9. It becomes “normalized” (that new favorite buzzword!) to cast any meetings or contacts with Russian officials as inherently sinister. Rather than just a basic function of a Senator’s ordinary duties, meeting with “The Russians” is increasingly viewed as evidence of nefarious intent, and perhaps participation in a grand global conspiracy.

10. Political ineptitude and clumsiness (as was very probably the case with Flynn) gets interpreted as something more calculated than it really is. Sessions could’ve avoided this ridiculous controversy by saying something to the effect of: “I did not meet with any Russian officials in my informal capacity as Trump campaign surrogate, but I did speak with Russian officials over the course of my ordinary Senatorial duties.” The problem is, such an admission would’ve probably blown up into a big political snafu; Democrats would’ve seized on it as evidence of Russian collusion. So Sessions tried to lawyer himself out of trouble with an ambiguous comment during sworn testimony. This allowed him to sneak through the confirmation process, but created an even bigger political storm later.

11. A Trump official’s least egregious quality ends up being portrayed as his most egregious quality. There were any number of reasons to be highly worried about the presence of Mike Flynn in the Trump administration, from his bellicose posture toward Iran, to his outlandish views on the alleged threat posed by Islam. Conversing with the Russian ambassador about reducing tensions would very clearly not have been on the “reasons to be worried about Flynn” list. Likewise, Jeff Sessions is a troubling figure for a whole host of reasons, ranging from his hawkishly retrograde attitude about Drug Prohibition to his dicey history on racial matters. That he spoke to the Russian Ambassador in September 2016 would not be on the “reasons to be worried about Sessions” list.

12. The overall political climate gets further degraded and warped without any commensurate upside.

The Democrat old guard got the power and the Left Flank just don't have the votes. Maybe after 2024, but 2018 is not shaping up to look like a comeback year for the Dems from here. It's only 15 months away.

"The event came on the heels of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s decision to release a series of slogans that sunk like a lead balloon with many in the base. While none were particularly inspired, one rankled the most: "Democrats 2018: I mean, have you seen the other guys?" The slogan made it abundantly clear that, after a bruising loss in November, Democrats wouldn’t be presenting new ideas or deeply examining their policy stances. Instead, they were doubling down on a visionless strategy of vanilla centrism, selling themselves as better than the worst dude"

The democrats and the media have lost what little mind they have left. The Donald JR story has them foaming at the mouth. We should have them rounded up and placed in quarantine for rabies! DJT Jr. broke no laws and did nothing wrong meeting some Russian babe lawyer in Trump Tower a year ago. Even Alan Dershowitz, a famous liberal lawyer has said there is no there there. But that media and the dems will have none of it. Even calling the meeting an act of treason! And we have to be at war for that. Anyone know if we are at war with Russia?

So here we go again down another liberal rabbit hole and Alice doesn't even live there anymore. These lefty folks are truly unhinged. Nothing they do to get Trump out is working. In fact, it is all backfiring. Americans are fed up and want to get the job of America going. These sideshows are hurting the country and it is all on the democrats. What a hoot!

The Trump administration will have a historic impact on the federal judiciary in the mean time. He came into office with over a hundred judicial vacancies and there have been 136 resignations/retirements since Trumps inauguration. Toss in Kennedy at SCOTUS and Ginsberg in his first term and we can rest assured that our kids and grandkids will have their rights preserved long after we are gone. ;-)

We still have the courts here and there to contain the left wing's mad march toward dismantling our Constitution. Trump's SCOTUS will hopefully stand for quite a few years as a bulwark against tyranny.

That there is a higher incident of coprophilia in politicians comes as no surprise at all.

George Rebane

fish 809am - did you mean 'corpophilia'? Does that mean love of corporations?

Coprophilia (countable and uncountable, plural coprophilias)

a marked interest in excrement; especially the use of feces or filth for sexual excitement.\

Another of my snotty comments in reference to stupidities uttered by politicians!

See "Scenes" 7:04 am post above!

The plot thickens, Bye Bye Jared???/

WASHINGTON

Investigators at the House and Senate Intelligence committees and the Justice Department are examining whether the Trump campaign’s digital operation – overseen by Jared Kushner – helped guide Russia’s sophisticated voter targeting and fake news attacks on Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Congressional and Justice Department investigators are focusing on whether Trump’s campaign pointed Russian cyber operatives to certain voting jurisdictions in key states – areas where Trump’s digital team and Republican operatives were spotting unexpected weakness in voter support for Hillary Clinton, according to several people familiar with the parallel inquiries.

Also under scrutiny is the question of whether Trump associates or campaign aides had any role in assisting the Russians in publicly releasing thousands of emails, hacked from the accounts of top Democrats, at turning points in the presidential race, mainly through the London-based transparency web site WikiLeaks.

PaulE 932am - Pray, why would such a routine and diligent course of inquiry in this investigation thicken any plot, save in the minds of the ever-hopeful hyperventilating Trump haters, who still anxiously await the first shred of evidence of any wrongdoing while fabricating fake news of what they fervently wish could be discovered?

Bill Tozer

Dr. Rebane @ 9:48 am. You can't fix stupid. Remember Einstein's definition of insanity? You just responded to Exhibit A.

Paul Emery

George

Okay lets put it in the "if true shit flies" folder.
Have you checked into Cambridge Analytica from Great Britain and their involvement in the Trump campaign? I'm not implying they did anything illegal unless they sub contracted to Russia and provided them data provided by the Trump campaign.
Here's a link for your further education.

Especially read this about Cambridge. Fascinating look at the sophistication of cyber research and facebook.

George Boardman

Oh goody, now there are two Republican health care bills in the Senate. What a bunch of bozos.

"I'm not implying they did anything illegal unless they sub contracted to Russia and provided them data provided by the Trump campaign. "

Just how is that illegal?

Paul Emery

It's pretty pathetic George B. Poll support for Trumpcare is microscopic-around 15%.

Support 16 oppose 58 dont know 26

Paul Emery

Stupid response Scenes, surprising that it came from you. Contracting a company to provide information to Russia with the purpose of undermining the U.S .election is illegal by any estimation.

Todd Juvinall

No one has read the bill Paul Emery so the poll is BS.

Todd Juvinall

Cruz just announced he supports the bill.

Gregory

I think we're all Boredmans on this bus [with apologies to The Firesign Theater]

So, why is a competing bill evidence for the GOP Senate to be "a bunch of Bozos"? That they don't have enforcers like Pelosi and Reid to bend legislators to their will, with threats to withhold campaign cash or fund a primary challenger no matter how budget busting a "yes" vote might be?

Gregory

Todd, all the news is that the GOP bill(s) throws 22 million off the rolls of the insured because they won't be coerced into buying something they can't afford to buy without a punitive tax threatening them, and it will cause live puppies to be thrown off overpasses in every city in the country.

Bill Tozer

This is sweet. We, too, have a special councilperson in these parts.

"But one councilman objected to the proposal, suggesting washing sidewalks with water is a form of microaggression."

For your reading pleasure

Trump continues to drop in the Conservative Rasmussen Poll that just a month ago Trump was bragging about. Down an astonishing 27-46 in the strongly approve-disapprove polling.

Yeah…..I hit that earlier!

Former Black Panther….now on the Seattle City Council. Poop fetishist it seems!

Todd Juvinall

Puppies thrown off overpassses is possible by Paul Emery. And yes those 22 million won't have to be forced to buy insurance. America!

"I'm not implying they did anything illegal unless they sub contracted to Russia and provided them data provided by the Trump campaign"

Did you notice that Russia wasn't mentioned in that story? No mention at all, not even a suggestion?

That's fake news incarnate. You made that up to tie in to your Russia fascination!

Punchy 1113am

The Rasmussen poll (of likely voters, not Republicans) has Trump at 44%. It has been moving sideways for months. Up and down between 50% and 42%, depending upon the news cycle.

Give it a rest.

BTW have you seen the Gavin Newsom interview on Morning Joe yesterday? According to the designated next Governator, the Russia story is a loser for Dems.
