Just got back from the Grass Valley City Council meeting still in session. During the early public comments/questions segment I was able to ask the council directly as to the truth of rumors that the city is planning to lay off first responders and staff, and possibly even consider filing for bankruptcy.
Mayor Mark Johnson responded to my question and stated that GV, like many cities today, is concerned about its finances. He cited that with the current economic situation the city is not at all certain as to the revenues it will receive, and is already in the process of reviewing what steps need to be taken to finalize the city’s budget and meet its financial obligations. He also stated that he has received calls from the media regarding this situation, and that the City will issue a press release explaining the matter within the next few days.
While not directly answering my question, one could conclude from the light-hearted manner in which it was received and responded to, that the Council clearly wants to communicate that such dire implications as significant staff cuts, let alone declaring bankruptcy, was not being considered. I am sure that the upcoming press release will answer all remaining questions and put the matter to rest.
