Some years back, I saw a sci-fi movie called "Species" where an alien race received our radio signals and answered. Instead of sending an invading army, they radioed us the plans to recreate their DNA into a human hybrid. Of course, humanity immediately set out to build one and it escaped, wreaking havoc and reproducing with humans.(It was a hot chick, naturally!)

It showed that our greatest strength is our curiosity, which has allowed us to dominate our planet by trial and error. But it also shows that, even though we know we can't control our creations, we'll do it anyway just to see what happens.

"... we'll do it anyway just to see what happens." Brothers, can I get an AMEN for hot chicks?

Sorry for emphasis on the NY Times this evening, but here is a poignant column from David Brooks: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/15/opinion/15brooks.html?hp

Michael - As a sidebar, I want to commend you and the viewpoints you bring to RR. You have a complex credo and a sophisticated political ideology. At times both may drive me up the wall, but contending ideas with you is always a gentlemanly pleasure. I have the same feeling about David Brooks and view him as a quasi-apostate from the conservative ranks. Your citation reminded me. Thank you.

You are welcome, George. I wanted to reply sooner, but business and other ROI considerations kept me from it. Thanks for your sidebar observation--there's more to discuss about this but it will have to happen in another venue on another day.

I plan to revisit the items we have been discussing on the various blogs later this spring: 1. PPACA, 2. Broadband, 3. High-Speed Rail, 4. AGW, 5. Broad political reform in the USA.

Until then, see you in a few weeks, and have a nice snow storm. Au revoir.
