Barry Pruett

The current events in Russia are disturbing. Biggest mistake Yeltsin ever made was pushing Putin. Nothing but a dictator who had propagandized the population of Russia. We are in dangerous times when the USA is lead by weak leaders who fail to support democracies. See Israel and Ukraine. Russia will push hard until Obama is gone.

Bill Tozer

Agree with Mr. Pruett, Esquire. All the world and its dictators know this is the time to act now that we are void of leadership, our foreign policy is a mockery, and our diplomacy is tits up. Putin, the Axis of Evil, you name it, all see this window of opportunity open wide for the next 22 months. The storm door is open and I ain't talking about the Pineapple Express. We are impotent and cannot be trusted even by our so called allies. Watching Obama cozy up Iran is driving our former allies like Egypt, Israel, Jordan and more up the wall. The Arabs do not like the Persians and Obama is giving Iran, North Korea and Boco Harem the green light.
Sad. Strike that. Beyond sad, it's heartbreaking. Strike while the iron is hot Leading from behind gets ya way behind. We are like a ship without a rudder and Obama is like a car without brakes. Armageddon?

joe smith

No one seems to have N Korea on their radar. It's Russia this, ISIS that, and don't forget to get your measles shot. There is a true crazy man at the helm of a nuke nation with a propaganda machine that makes Russia look like a Carribean Cruise.

joe smith

I stand corrected. While jawing about N Korea, Tozer pushed his N. Korea send button first. It is on someone's radar!

Walt

Anyone read this news yet?
http://dailycaller.com/2015/03/01/shocking-report-obama-threatened-to-shoot-down-israeli-jets-targeting-iran/

"O" won't attack our enemies, and it seems he won't let Israel do so either.

Looks like "O" WANTS Iran to wipe out Israel. HELL Horse face Kerry has just about agreed to give Iran a nuke.

Bill Tozer

Mr. Walt, I have said it more than once: "With friends like Obama, who needs enemas." Ukraine found out, and the light bulb has finally turned on in Egypt's and Israel's heads.

Walt

Not so fast there Joe,, The little lunatic can even see "O" as weak, nutless, and the paper tiger he is. I doubt "O" will defend S.Korea any better than he has done with the Ukraine.

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2015/03/01/kim-jong-un-reportedly-tells-north-korean-army-to-prepare-for-war-with-us/

joe smith

You are a small thinker dirt mover. S. Korea has little interest for Jong. He demands a world stage and has the capacity to use any number of proxies to send a nuclear package to Japan, Israel, US territories or the mainland itself.

Bill Tozer

Hmmm. Iran keeps popping up.

http://nypost.com/2015/03/01/why-obamas-iran-deal-is-a-path-to-war/

And Russia as well. Russia has been played their cards well ever since Putin stepped in to negotiate Syria's face saving chemical weapons tiny dust up. Another meaningless line in the sand, woof, woof. Of course Putin does not have to play his cards with precision now that he is playing with children from LALA Land. Boo! That really scared Putin, Mr. "horseface" Kerry. Go one, Walt.
Wonder what Putin has been up to in private besides eating Chicken Kiev? Maybe drinking Black Russians and raking in the chips....while the world watches Eastern Ukraine. That's right, Obama, look around but not over there.

Walt

"S. Korea has little interest"? Just where do you come up with that? They sure don't want to be ruled by the SOB. ( if that's what you mean)
The boy king is looking to look relevant and is ready to start some shit to prove it.
With "O" and Co.'s negotiating skills, he may just let the little bastard take the South.
"O" has let the rest of the world turn into turmoil, why should Korea be any different?

Bill Tozer

Could not figure out why Obama was hopping in bed with Iran, missionary style, with the Supreme Alloyolla on top. Now it makes sense. Obama's roots are of the Shitte sect, just like the Iranians. Afterwards Obama asked "Was it good for me?" The sweetest sounds he ever heard was the Supreme's call to prayer.

Joe Koyote

more climate news: A new study at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab proves CO2 to blame for climate change. The study actually observed the process of CO2 trapping heat. Scientists there say carbon dioxide from the burning of coal, oil and gas is the chief cause of global warming.

And yes, the previous models were wrong about how fast it is occurring, and yes the process has slowed some in the last decade or so, BUT that does not change the overall picture, the slowing is likened to a speed bump and not a reason to deny the fact that climate change is real and human caused.

This new study combined with the recent revelations of misinformation perpetrated by "for hire" scientists pretty much ends the debate, if there ever was a real debate to begin with.

George Rebane

Did everyone see George Boardman's column in the 2mar15 Union? Most regular readers know that GeorgeB shares his comments on RR now and again, and they always contribute to the issue(s) being dissected. But his piece this morning was a confusing amalgam of topics that included critique of the BoS for giving the SoJ people time to present their case, vaccination attitudes in our community, a couple of anecdotes involving CCW permit holders in Nevada, and economic development being held back in Nevada County by, perhaps, all of the above. And frankly, I don't know if I got any of this right, but I'm sure that it was not one Mr Boardman's tightly written offerings.

fish

This new study combined with the recent revelations of misinformation perpetrated by "for hire" scientists pretty much ends the debate, if there ever was a real debate to begin with.

Now we can "end the debate".....!

The eschatological satisfaction of the secular scientician....not only are there "end times" but you get to be an active participant!

Feels almost ......religious doesn't it JoKe.

Todd Juvinall

GeorgeB's article was certainly confusing. I once knew someone that wrote the same way and it turned out she was consuming too many alcoholic beverages. But I am sure he doesn't.

Global Warming. I think a large number of people perhaps in the many millions on the east coast are now falling ut of love with the grant seeking scientists who love it. Cold weather is a better convincer than yapping lying government paid scientists.

George Rebane

re JoeK 1023am - Ah yes, yet another debate ending study from government scientists. Finding that CO2 is a greenhouse (heat trapping) gas should not get anyone to break out the celebratory confetti, noise makers, and funny hats. That has been known for quite a few decades. But what continues to bamboozle lay people like our Mr Koyote is their inability to evaluate claims by such scientists.

Messing with the models some more to get them to replicate tortured data records is an honorable profession. However, claiming success (again) from such efforts that involve processes with very long time constants is more than a bit fatuous. The real place to start evaluating their claims is to look at the confidence bands on their delivered outputs.

Of the many humorous interludes climate science has provided us are the hosannas of the true believers touting a new clear vision of the future at every turn, when in reality none of their work has been able to make their predictions more accurate over the passing of years. In science, that is the clearest indication that one does not yet have a handle on the problem.
http://rebaneruminations.typepad.com/rebanes_ruminations/2013/10/manmade-global-warming-the-smoking-gun.html

But given the disaster of the recent IPCC report, these bought-and-paid-for scientists have to produce something now and then to keep the grant and budget monies for climate research coming. It doesn't even have to be too fancy, just enough to dangle in front of an innumerate public so that the central planning wheels can keep turning in all those big buildings in Washington. And on the hustings, good people like Mr Koyote are doing their job. More here -

Joe Koyote

" yet another debate ending study from government scientists."

Personally, I prefer what you call "gov't scientists" to fossil fuel industry paid scientists. Besides the insane claim that gov't. is using climate change to institute some kind of socialist order, what do govt scientists have to gain or lose versus the fossil fuel industry that has a whole lot to gain or lose in this debate? The fossil fuel industry is using the same tactics big tobacco used for years, deny deny deny, stall stall stall, lie lie lie. Just whose ability to evaluate claims is in question here anyway? Once again, I think the folks at Lawrence know quite a bit more about evaluating research than anyone here does, so I'm going with their conclusions.

Carp-- thanks again for yet another meaningless comment.
Todd -- thanks for the weather report, but that doesn't change anything.

Todd Juvinall

Weather report? JoeK, that is the climate man. It is covering over half the hemisphere. It is not some little valley micro climate. Jeeze, the ignorance of the left is palpable.

I would like to ask you JoeK, would you rather have the government owning and disbursing the fuel you use in your car, truck and home, or the free market?

Todd Juvinall

Is see you were a commuter for twenty five years to Sacramento JoeK. Are you feeling guilty about your carbon footprint?

fish

Carp-- thanks again for yet another meaningless comment.

I tried to dumb it down for you. My bad.....I'll try harder next time!

Remember JoKe just because it's meaningless to you JoKe doesn't mean it's meaningless.

I think Todd nailed it though! Lingering concern over violations of the faith! You leftys.....I swear you're as strict as 14th century Catholics.

"I commuted to Sacramento for almost 25 years and the commute times varied from one hour ten minutes to over two hours depending on traffic and day of the week, and I was driving toward the tail end of the morning rush hour.

Ironically this only reinforces my earlier "meaningless comment".....well done JoKe you're still participating in the discussion even if you are unaware of the fact!

And I'll close with this.....

Besides the insane claim that gov't. is using climate change to institute some kind of socialist order, what do govt scientists have to gain or lose versus the fossil fuel industry that has a whole lot to gain or lose in this debate?

I've seen government scientist bark like trained seals for grant money......in person!

How soon before faux economist and proglodyte luminary Paul Krugman pulls something like this!

George Rebane

JoeK 1206pm - Don't know who these "fossil fuel industry scientists" are, sounds like they are everyone besides the govt scientists. In any event, you clearly have neither worked with nor have any idea how govt scientific research is conducted, therefore your faith in their "conclusions" is understandable and even forgiven. The rest of us recall that every previous version of climate science from this crowd was equally heralded with '... but this time we have it right!'

Fortunately, the measurables are there for all who have eyes to see. (BTW, around 90% published scientific papers turn out to have contain significant errors in the approach, analysis, conclusions - sufficient to require their withdrawal or offer corrected versions, which, of course, suffer the same fate. Only the lambs retain their comfort levels.)

Let’s Destroy Liberal Academia

Understand that the purpose of modern American “education” is not to educate students. It is primarily to provide cushy, subsidized sinecures for liberal administrators and faculty while, secondarily, providing a forum to indoctrinate soft young minds in the liberal fetishes du jour. Actually educating students is hard, and a meaningful education is anathema to liberalism. In the liberals’ ideal world, the universities would simply fester with leftist nonsense and not even bother with trying to teach their charges anything at all. And today, it’s pretty close to being the liberals’ ideal world.

Fish,
What do you think about the DHS funding issue? Although totally disagree with the reasons attached to not funding it I am 100% on board of abolishing the Department of Homeland Security. It has proven to only cost billions, overwhelm intelligence agencies with non essential information, violate civil liberties, create a surveillance state, and make a few companies huge profits and not much else.

I know Chertoff company magically received the 4th amendment violating full body scanners used by the TSA. That is just the tip of the iceberg. I am sure tons of cronyism takes place within the agency and programs.

When flying home from Asia a couple of years ago I found it ironic when I flew from Seoul to Phnom Penh I didn't have to go through the body scanners. From Seoul to SF, it was a different story. When returning to the former human rights beacon of the world, United States of America, I had to go through the scanners and pointed it out to the person working. They were Korean and didn't see the irony but the person behind me defended the practice. I pulled out my pocket US Constitution and proceeded to have a very good conversation about the 4th amendment. They thanked me for taking the time but respectfully disagreed that the inconvenience of going through the scanner was worth it for our "safety". I left them with this question to look up when they got home-

How many people have been stopped by these new rules/ practices?

It is all political theater to make it look like they are doing something while lining the pockets of party insiders and party funders of who ever is controlling the executive branch. Bush administration did it as does the Obama administration.

I think you have a pretty good idea about my opinions based on our previous conversations. My thoughts regarding the DHS bill had to do with the claim that the last election was billed as the "most important ever" and other than some slight variation in tone DC it's the same old show! America couldn't even show "Cryin John" the door as speaker and he, true to form, is as compliant and accommodating as any Obama patron frequenting a Chicago bathhouse!

Man, she looks like she's coming off a serious bender in that pic!

Brad C.

Don't know if I agree with the latest hoopla regarding Hillary's email accounts.
What about telephone calls? Are all phone calls by government employees, whether at work or at home, required to be recorded? If not, why are all emails supposed to be maintained on .gov websites?
Anyway, doesn't Carnivore have all HIllary's (and mine, and your) data (metadata) safe in a salt mine in Utah somewhere?

Joe Koyote

around 90% published scientific papers turn out to have contain significant errors in the approach, analysis, conclusions - sufficient to require their withdrawal or offer corrected versions, which, of course, suffer the same fate"

Is this all papers, climate related papers? Sourced or is this your opinion? I used to be a research assistant for a national journal. Any paper that had so much as a spelling error or lack of a quotation mark was sent back to the author(s) for correction.

Todd-- no I don't feel guilty about my carbon footprint.. I drove a 4-banger.. which I am sure had a smaller footprint than your pickup truck.

Joe Koyote

George-- even if your 90% figure is correct.. wouldn't that just increase one's confidence in the peer-review process? If only 10% of papers submitted for publication make the grade, as you imply, I would think the ones that do make it would be pretty solid.

fish

Todd-- no I don't feel guilty about my carbon footprint.. I drove a 4-banger.. which I am sure had a smaller footprint than your pickup truck.

I still think that Gaia should smite you!

George Rebane

JoeK 949am - Unfortunately I didn't say it well enough for you to understand. The 90% stat applies to published papers that are subsequently shown to be in error. Fortunately the overwhelming fraction of those derive from the 'soft sciences', however, they do include a sizeable proportion of climate and meteorological papers simply because the systems they seek to describe are so complex and partially observed (a technical attribute).

For example, arguably the biggest hole in the climate science knowledge base is our ignorance of earth's carbon cycle. You can bet the farm that the first person to complete even an approximate description of the comprehensive carbon cycle will be hauled to Stockholm and have a Nobel prize shoved in his mitt. Today we simply don't know all the looping feedbacks, let alone their relative magnitudes and dynamics. Every general circulation model incorporates its authors' favorite patchwork of what has been published on the CO2 cycle, throwing in a new pathway, adjusting the dynamics of an existing one, and purging the parts recently discredited.

The bottom line is that GCMs are not ready for prime time, let alone to serve as basis for public policy. However, govt grant scientists have no choice but to give agenda driven politicians highly qualified GCM endorsements, which qualifications are immediately ignored, and for which strong statements of 'scientific consensus' are substituted which then are echoed by the gruberized across the land. A reading of the latest IPCC report (even its exec summary) is most informative - unfortunately national dumbth makes even that inaccessible.

fish

You can bet the farm that the first person to complete even an approximate description of the comprehensive carbon cycle will be hauled to Stockholm and have a Nobel prize shoved in his mitt.

Of course, if it fails to provide sufficient evidence for the pre-determined political goal, that person will be very publicly destroyed both personally and professionally!

Joe Koyote | 03 March 2015 at 09:45 AM

Well you should feel guilty under your own terms JoeK. My truck is driven locally and seldom even when I was building homes. You drove a four banger for 25 years over 120 miles a day and probably sat in stopped traffic on the freeway. So once again you liberals indict yourselves with the utter hypocrisy you live by. Preach to others that don't know what the truth is yet.

TESTIFY Brother Todd!!!!

Walt

OH the "true believers" will be fit to be tied.
NO way can the sun influence global temps..... Right?

http://dailycaller.com/2015/03/03/paper-global-warming-more-like-global-cooling/

I guess it will take wearing a parka in June to get someone's attention to the fact. ( and not in Alaska.)

Walt

Bill,, Lois and her emails... nice conspiracy has been at work. There is plenty of new news on that. From a blind "person" doing the "looking" , to "uh,, no one asked us for the tapes.". Now we have this out today.
http://dailycaller.com/2015/03/02/exposed-department-of-justice-shut-down-search-for-lois-lerners-emails/

Now if these things happened under, and with a Repub. administration,, would our resident Lefties, and LIBS in gerneral be so " nothing to see here".. "No big deal".

As pointed out, Hillary was up to no good as well with her private emails.
This may turn into her own "Richard Winser" moment. ( remember that from the witch from the EPA?)

Mary Ann

Maybe Hillary had a couple ads on Craigslist looking for a guy in a blue dress?

LOL!!!

What's good for the goose.......

I'm still trying to figure out what people like Walt, and what their position might be if they changed the wording of "Global Warming" to "Climate Change"?

I think that Walt's argument wouldn't be much different as he follows the Dailycaller website like a dog chasing a piece of bacon.....

George Rebane

MaryA 130pm - No problem, Walt has declared his true colors on global warming many times, without even being offered bacon. The real question is what was the purpose of the true believers when they changed the label from 'anthropogenic global warming' (AGW) to simply 'global warming', and then to 'climate change'. That especially since anyone with a grade school education should know that the normal dynamic for climate is change, which in itself has nothing to do with AGW. So what was that presto-changeo name change bamboozle all about?

Bill Tozer

The only constant about climate is change. Heck, how many moons ago did Dr. Rebane write several essays about how climate change was caused mass migrations throughout the entire history of mankind. A region gets cold and people start starving to death and migrate to warmer zones. A region goes through a long hard drought, and hundreds of thousands abandoned their homes and villages for places to farm. That be climate change that Walt (and I) embrace. Ironically, most major widespread droughts have occurred during cooler periods of our climate. I know if the wind stopped blowing for a year, there would be much wailing and gnashing of teeth for every man, woman, and child on the planet. No one would be sparred and we can't even fully understand the root causes of wind or future formations of clouds,
Oppps, got off track. The other constant in life is I have never seen a liberal see a dollar laying around without trying to claim it as their own. They can't help themselves. They really think is theirs, not yours. So predicable.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/robertwood/2015/03/03/obama-eyes-more-tax-hikes-by-executive-action/?utm_campaign=yahootix&partner=yahootix

Walt

Sniff sniff!!! Someone say BACON!!!??? AH Crap... fake bacon no less. (as in fake AGW)
If man has SO much influence on things, how bout some "man made rain" right here in Ca.?
Chemtrails anyone? Or are those designed to dry out Ca.? There is your conspiracy!!
Those things chase away the rain clouds I tell ya!

Yup the "true believers" are a nutty as the chemtrail fanatics.
What a concept Mary,, the sun gets a little uppity (heats up) then cools off for a spell.
And that won't have an affect here on the third rock away? It's simple science.
It's been LONG known the Sun goes through fazes like this.

All the scamitists that swore up and down that "MAN" was to blame have been playing chicken Little,, and at our expence. Billions to trillions in "grant money" and from suckers that bought their BS hook line and sinker. So Mary,, how come all those computer predictions have come up short? ( WAY short)

BTW,, Record cold and snowfall back East...Again. ( when " snow was to be a thing of the past, and children would only read about in history books"... From a top global warmer scamitist)

Mary Ann

I think that what you're taking about makes very little sense in the big financial picture doesn't it?

The bottom line is that we want to stop all of this change right? If it's man-made or a natural part of science and part of the earths normal process, at this point makes no sense, all we know is that it's changing, and not for the better. If it is man made than we're about 25+ years too late, so how do we minimize the effects of what's coming onto us? Arguing about if it's "man made" is about as smart as two dogs who are arguing over who get's to the top bunk at their beach front home, as pretty soon it really will not matter.

Being a smart conservative does it make more sense to spend trillions of dollars trying to save New York, Seattle, Silicon Valley and the SF Bay Area, or should we just say sorry folks, you need to move the technology and financial centers of the universe.

Either way we're going to have to pay for it. The question is can we make an effect now and try to mitigate these changes, or should we just tell the folks in Florida, so sorry you need to move? We will all pay for this either now or later, and I'm more willing to try to stop this now rather than get farther behind the eight ball and have my great, great great, great grand-kids end up with their home in Redding become beach front property?

The bottom line is this is going to be the biggest problem of our lives, so how do we minimize it?

Burying our heads in the sand and saying "it's part of earth's normal cycles seems to be pretty dopey in the big financial picture, especially when you look as it will either be the American and world tax payers who can work on this now for X dollars, or we can walk away from it and pay trillions in a world that gets hammered later......

If 97% of the scientists who work in the environmental field say we have a problem, then I don't really care who's responsible, I care about how do we minimize it and save money down the road.

With the amount of crying about the dollars that are spend now, it'll be a microscopic amount compared with the end costs down the road.

Walt

The "climate" is going to do what "it" wants to do, and there is not a thing one way or the other that "we"(man) can do about it except adapt. That, we DO have the ability to do.
Now for some homework Mary. (there will be a test) What was the ocean level 10,000 years ago? ( last week in geologic time)
Now .. How can man put a thermostat on the Sun? ( to keep it just the way we like it)

I KNEW IT.......you're my ex mother in law....only she could be this incoherent!

(actually though that whole speaking from beyond the grave thing is pretty neat. How'd you pull that off?)

Mary Ann

Chemtrails..... Really Walt?

I really have to wonder about our school system when I read some of the wacky comments that are substantiated by some of the people here...

Again Walt, does it really matter that records (and science) are showing that the earth has never heated as quickly as what we've seen in the last 30 years, but because you tell us that it's a "normal part" of the earths conditions, but does it really matter?

Climate change is here, whether it's record cold or warming, and no matter what's called and how much Walt want's to try to tell us that we can't believe it, because they said it would be warming, rather than looking at what his statements show, as things are a changing!

fish

Walt.....Michael....err..... "Mary Ann" has her script and s/he's sticking to it. Other than than any potential satisfaction from mocking him....err....her I probably wouldn't bother.

George Rebane

MaryA 329pm - You might want to consider that it is really "dopey" to think that there is anything that the US or even mankind can do to change climate in any desired direction. We simply don't know what levers to pull or knobs to turn to affect climate. But even worse, we don't know whether any of such controls are available to us.

What you and yours are suggesting is the equivalent of turning loose a chimpanzee in the cockpit of 747 at 30,000 feet.

Right now we don't know how to predict future climate, we don't know whether there is a climate problem, we most certainly don't know how control climate, but we do know how to use climate hysteria to increase the scope and size of government(s) and satisfy some pretty draconian social agendas that lead to a political world last seen in Cambodia during the 1970s.

Don Bessee

Seems Mary Ann is afraid of change. Given we only have +- 150 years of temp records that were spotty at best how can we be so vain as to think that (insert percentage of the planets age whatever length of records you think we have represents) earths history is a sufficient knowledge base to mess mother nature?

Walt

If you believe in man influenced climate, I got a Bigfoot chained up in my backyard.
Heck. It might even be a Nevada City hipster with all that hair. He ate all my pot plants.

Mary Ann

It's amazing that you people don't actually believe in science.....

I'm hearing Don who's claiming that we only have 150 years of records, and Walt having Bigfoot in his backyard (which I'm more likely to believe than any logical discussion that I've heard from him going on here) and George is saying that we'd be turning a chimp loose in a 747 at 30,000 feet, but sorry George, as that chimp has already been loose for the past 50 years and you're trying to equate this whole problem and the possible resolution to the Cambodia conflict?

Is that what you guys are trying to tell me?

A friend of mine spoke with me about your group, stating that there were some interesting intelligent people here, but maybe they had today off?

I'm still trying to figure out where you gentlemen get your info from??? Oh please do tell as someone with a degree in a scientific area I'd sure like to see this......

AGW crap is in whole, "political" science. It's all about money and control.

You can't say there is global cooling, and blame it on global warming.
The "hockey stick" has turned into the "all day sucker" stick.
But keep giving to the church of Al Gore.. He has been real good at "do as I say, not as I do", with his gorse polluting private jets and super size mansions, that suck the power of a town the size of Penn Valley.

Todd Juvinall

Mary Ann, err, I mean MichaelA, we are all based in true science. It is the hoaxers and their true believers that rely on computer models not us. We use logic and real world examples. You seem to be brainwashed into your positions as I have seen them espoused a thousand times and almost as verbatim. I would suggest you return to your favorite blog where the sheeple are all ready to believe the hoax. We think for ourselves.

Gregory

I'd bet real money Mary Ann ain't Michael P. Anderson... considering the moobs and the writing styles, Stephen Frisch or The FUE would be my guess.

No, "Mary Ann", 97% ain't a real number for climate science consensus, that's a Banana Republic or a North Korean vote margin. The closest thing to an actual number of actual scientists with expertise in the subject is the 52% of the professional membership of the American Meteorological Society (which is to climate science as the AMA is to chiropractics), which is the percentage of meteorologists that believe one half or more of the warming of the past century was caused by man, including things like deforestation. That probably is akin to less than 20% believing a CO2 driven catastrophe is possible but they weren't asked that... probably because they didn't want an answer they couldn't explain away.

I think all Frisco State requires for science from poli sci majors is one course akin to "Your Friend, the Amoeba", but than that's also about all that is required for a Berkeley BA in Rhetoric, so "Mary Ann" could be from either anti-intellectual position.

Today's Quiz: what do John Holdren (the current White House science advisor), the late Steven Schneider and Paul (Population Bomb) Erhlich all have in common besides being environmental demigods?

MaryA 444pm - Regarding "believing in science", I'm afraid you have me at a disadvantage. You know my credentials in science, and I don't even know whether you have any understanding of what science is. Perhaps you could share some of your background so we can tell at what level you should be addressed. Talking past each other is so frustrating.

Gregory

"I'm hearing Don who's claiming that we only have 150 years of records"

I'd not quite make that statement, but it isn't far off. 165 years is probably more defensible.

The gold standard for temps are the satellite data sets that cover the entire planet and are not fudged (call it "homogination") like the terrestrial temperatures, and the satellite records only go back to 1979. The satellite data also does not support the record high temp year being 2014... that's pretty clearly a political construct by panicking climate activists. Time is running out for political action.

"Regarding "believing in science", I'm afraid you have me at a disadvantage." -GR

George, I think it's more of a disadvantage than you may be aware. Neither of us "believe in science" as this sock puppet does. We are knowledgeable, we are facile, we are able to apply it, discuss it rationally.. I suspect we've also both read and understood Popper and grok falsification. To "Mary Ann", be she the FUE, the Frischie, the Mikey or friend, it's a "belief" and you either follow the teaching of the High Priests du jour or you are cast out as an apostate.

Things don't make sense in the big financial picture, eh? Let's throw money at it. That will save Miami, right? Didn't help the Miami Dophins or the LA Dodgers, but I digress. I wouldn't mind if I had beach front property in Redding. The ocean air just might kill some of that pesky poison oak. And I could plant some coastal wildflowers instead of perennials from harsh climates that are very water wise. Coastal wildflowers are the prettiest things this side of paradise.

If we knew there will be long term heating or cooling of our orb for the next few centuries, what can man do about it? Mr. Steele once gave me an answer to a question I posed. I asked him should I buy swimming trunks or long johns?? I followed his advice. More people in our Northeast and Midwest are also following his advice. We can switch to cold tolerate crops for starters, or, if you believe we are going to be treated like a deep fried Twinkie at the Iowa State Fair, we should start tilling the frozen tundra to get ready for Spring planting. There is a lot we can do to prepare, but not much we can do to save Seattle from The Worse Call Ever. Nor the Tampa Bay Buckaneers. Japan already is selling water from ice bergs at high end resturants. We can do much and we can do much ado about nothing.

"Throw money at the problem" kinda has a futile track record. Seems I have heard that before. We do just that at our educational system and the results are embarrassing. And we can control our public educational system a lot easier than trying to stop our Sol from defrosting of the Saber Tooth Tiger.
Maybe we can control the climate on Mars. Space is the final frontier. We are mankind and can stop earthquakes and shooting stars and made it rain in Minneapolis in the summer time. But, we still haven't learned to hold back diarrhea very well.

Re Netanyahu/Obama and the Mideast. George Friedman of Stratfor has written an excellent short history of the emergence, evolution, and current status of US/Israeli relations. It is important to understand both in the context of the current Iranian negotiations and the fight against ISIS.

The piece should lay to rest the gross misunderstanding that some readers have evinced on when and how the antagonism between America and Mideast Islam began, grew, and has now evolved. For those interested in our continued Mideast involvement, this is an important read.

Just kidding guys, you are great!

* “Circle Jerk” is a pejorative slang term referring to a positive feedback loop which occurs when an idea, belief or meme that is already customary within an online community becomes re-iterated and rewarded in a perpetual cycle, giving rise to redundancy, clichés and karma whoring. This phenomenon is typically observed in communities consisting of self-contained forums devoted to specific interests, beliefs or subcultures.

How pray was Ms MaryAnn treated poorly here, and by whom? The lady received a fair hearing from all, especially on matters where she was clearly in over her head. Also, what evidence do you harbor about RR's readers being "anti women"?

You would not be correct that circle jerks are limited to the Right. I engage in such behavior when ever I challenge partisans positions or ideology no matter which political party they belong, that includes the Green Party. Our sh!# don't stink syndrome annoys me beyond no end. There is no perfect system, institution, or governance and there has never been in the history of organized societies. The best thing we can do is create something that benefits the highest % of the population at the smallest interference or obstruction to the remaining population. That is the goal.

Ben Emery

I have locked horns here many times about equal pay for equal work, reproductive rights, good old boy political system 20% of our elected representatives are women despite representing 51% of the population and good old boy executive promotions in private sector is even worse, reducing women qualifications and credentials to the physical looks, ect....

George Rebane

BenE 1019am - Does it not puzzle you that your characterization of women holds in a society in which most of the wealth is held by women who also constitute half of the nation's voting block?

Todd Juvinall

Mary Ann was treated equally here as we treat Ben Emery etal. If she can't take it, then adios. Looks like she took that path. Ben Emery is a great example of a clueless liberal and I think it is terrific that he posts here. It gives people with a brain a chance to read the absurdity spewed by the left. Of course Ben Emery appears to hate himself and his color of skin since he always brings that stuff up. The left are the true nuts and the right the one's with common sense. Ben Emery represents the kind of person always working for someone else, always envious, always whiny.

Regarding JoKe's post before the Mary Ann interlude...
"This new study combined with the recent revelations of misinformation perpetrated by "for hire" scientists pretty much ends the debate, if there ever was a real debate to begin with."
2 March 2015 at 10:23 AM

The new study is a direct measurement of CO2 warming only; it's certainly neat they pulled it off (good science there) but there has never been a controversy over CO2's absorption of a narrow band of the infrared. Skeptics think that results in about a 1C to a 1.5C increase in atmospheric temps for a doubling of CO2, so do Alarmists, but the IPCC multiplies that by a factor of 2 to 5 by a theorized positive feedback loop involving the rest of the planet, mostly more evaporation of water without creating more clouds (a hell of a trick). Anthropogenic CO2 is now up to 400ppm from about 300ppm (that's an increase of 0.01%).

What that study did, Joe, was to directly measure what *everyone* agrees with already; it settles nothing. It's the theorized response to the CO2 perturbation (look it up) by the climate that is controversial and this measurement does absolutely nothing to shed light on that.

Walt

Ben, the biggest circle jerks the world has ever seen were the IPCC Assessment Reports 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Especially 3, 4 and 5.

Another word for that is groupthink, in this case, politically motivated (what part of "Intergovernmental Panel" do you not understand?) groupthink.

BTW all of the general circulation models (the computerized climate that modelers pretend to be valid when it suits them) require at least a 2 degree CO2 climate sensitivity (meaning we get a 2C increase for a doubling of CO2) in order for anything scary to happen. A number of physicists peg that at 1 to 1.5C, the IPCC desperately wants it to be at least 2C but while AR4 raised the range from 1.5 to 4.5 to 2.0 to 4.5, the weight of real world evidence they couldn't deny any longer caused it to be lowered back down to 1.5 last year.

Mary Ann's treatment from the residents of RR is right on par with anybody who has had the nerve of having a different opinion in the past.

Yes, yes....we know you are a "goodthinker"! Every single post........!

It would seem that the status quo clearly can't stand, as you have repeatedly assured us that 90% of the electorate "agrees with my positions on the issues". Why haven't you and the progressive vanguard implemented these desperately needed reforms. Why are you denying society the beauty of your political vision? When can we expect the implementation of this bold new societal paradigm?

Walt

LOL!! Uh,, what happened to being treated like any man? You know,,, all that "equal treatment" we keep hearing about? OK Mary,, open your own door. Ya' know what they say,, "if chivalry is dead, women killed it."

"Mary Ann" wrote, "Oh please do tell as someone with a degree in a scientific area I'd sure like to see this..." 03 March 2015 at 04:44 PM

(Ben, please note "Mary Ann"'s snark)

If this poster is still reading, please do check back in with a little humility for a change. Please favor us with the actual "scientific area" degrees you have. Some biology/green types think their lifesciencey degrees qualify, but I tend to agree with the likes of UC Berkeley who have a math track for science and engineering, the sciences being chemistry and physics. Same defs as the Chem and Physics department. Once my son finished his sophomore year in Chemistry he was actually was hired to fill the shoes of a grad student to be the lab assistant/recitation section leader for freshman life science chemistry and his department thought it sad that many of them avoided the real class required for the physics, chemistry, math and engineering types.

As Barbie might have been programmed to say, "Chemistry is hard!"

If you've actually earned a real Bachelor of Science and can read the literature for yourself, here's one list of peer reviewed science that supports climate skepticism:
http://www.populartechnology.net/2009/10/peer-reviewed-papers-supporting.html

I personally would recommend all papers written by Shaviv, Veizer, Svensmark, Kirkby and Lindzen. If you run out of material or have a question, just ask.

George Rebane

Speaking of MIT's Prof Lindzen, he wrote a very revealing piece in today's (5mar15) WSJ about 'The Political Assault on Climate Skeptics' about which we here on RR are well-versed as the targets of the Left's science-free slings and arrows.
http://www.wsj.com/articles/richard-s-lindzen-the-political-assault-on-climate-skeptics-1425513033

Gregory

Those for whom googling the title to get a google page reference to get past the WSJ subscription challenge is daunting, here's a copy you can just click and read:

http://hockeyschtick.blogspot.com/2015/03/dr-richard-lindzen-in-wsj-political.html

BTW, "Mary Ann", that's a good one for you to read, a fine tutorial on how a consensus can be manufactured out of whole cloth: attack unmercifully anyone who dares object. Witch hunts. It worked for a time for Sen. McCarthy and for the witch hunters in Salem, but eventually the lack of facts get in the way.
