Great! When people lioke the FUE-l moderate they get a vast wasteland don't they? Anyway, GeorgeR knows all about the suppression of speech, he escaped from FUE-like countries and people!

And then, new President of the Boy Scouts (Robert Gates) proposes overturning ban on gay leaders of Boy Scouts.

Don Bessee

Hey fish did you wash out the sock puppets from the fue counts? At least 'jon' has managed to avoid saying we are purple but come to think of it lefty jeffy has not recently either.

Jon

Actually Don, I agree with Pelline that in the aggregate/weighted average- we are a purple region, even in the midst of the Great Divide that Dr. Rebane speaks of, correctly. We are as purple as it gets in California.

As a "relatively" new arrival to these threads I'm only familiar with a small subset of jeffys imaginary playmates. Annie, Bruiser one or two others......there are days I think "Jon" is screwy enough to be jeffy and others when "Jon" seems almost....well....semi-normal.

I will say this if "Jon" is jeffy he oughta stick with this personality as it's far less annoying than his real persona.

I only wish I could have been here when jeffy was starring as "Gloria Zane".....from what I hear his performances were Oscar worthy.

Actually "Jon"....jeffy can't even get that right as the political boat in California is tilted so far to the Blue side
the ship of state is in danger of capsizing. California is blue not purple.

Some pushback against Obama’s ridiculous climate remarks at the Coast Guard commencement

By Paul C. “Chip” Knappenberger and Patrick J. Michaels
Did human-caused climate change lead to war in Syria?Based only on the mainstream press headlines, you almost certainly would think so.

Reading further into the articles where the case is laid out, a few caveats appear, but the chain of events seems strong.

The mechanism? An extreme drought in the Fertile Crescent region—one that a new study finds was made worse by human greenhouse gas emissions—added a spark to the tinderbox of tensions that had been amassing in Syria for a number of years under the Assad regime (including poor water management policies).

It is not until you dig pretty deep into the technical scientific literature, that you find out that the anthropogenic climate change impact on drought conditions in the Fertile Crescent is extremely minimal and tenuous—so much so that it is debatable as to whether it is detectable at all.

This is not to say that a strong and prolonged drought didn’t play some role in the Syria’s pre-war unrest—perhaps it did, perhaps it didn’t (a debate we leave up to folks much more qualified than we are on the topic)—but that the human-influenced climate change impact on the drought conditions was almost certainly too small to have mattered.

In other words, the violence would almost certainly have occurred anyway.

Gregory 10:51
Global sea ice is NOT the same as arctic sea ice. We now have shipping lanes crossing over the arctic seas where historically ice breakers were required to punch through (if they could). The Antarctic sea ice is growing, ironically, because warmer temperatures are creating higher humidity over the land ice and the moisture laden air is being blown out to sea where it snows and cools the ocean surface which freezes. The thickness of this ice is very thin.

Gregory

Arctic ice is almost entirely sea ice and is not disappearing. Antarctic ice exists around Antarctica and is at record levels. Here is another link showing polar sea ice separately:
http://www.climate4you.com/images/NSIDC%20GlobalArcticAntarctic%20SeaIceArea.gif

The sky is not falling and the ice is not gone.

Perhaps if you'd offer a link or two describing the shipping lines you think the ice free Arctic is currently enabling, I'd be able to discuss your information with you. There have been a number of "the Northwest Passage will be ice free Real Soon" stories, but as of yet I'm not aware of a Titanic II making its way across it.

Bonnie McGuire

Did (human-caused) climate change lead to war in Syria? Let's face it. Some human beings will use any excuse to destroy and kill other humans. There are lotsa of examples from barrooms to Congress. The earth will do what it wants regardless of the human bugs crawling around on its surface. When it wants a change it'll shake, rattle and roll...and shed its old skin during the process of renewal. Hate to be a wet blanket...but come on, the earth's proven history regarding all forms of change is more powerful than us. We usually get buried during the process.

"But a key crackdown on human trafficking survived the legislative jujitsu. The White House considers the provision a deal-breaker, as it would force one of the nations involved in the TPP talks -- Malaysia -- out of the agreement. An immigration-related amendment authored by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) never got a vote, making it far more difficult for Obama to win over skeptical tea party Republicans in the House."

Anyone have a clue as to what the Dept of Commerce $500K grant to NC's Economic Resource Council is supposed to accomplish? Here's the piece from County CEO Rick Haffey's Friday report -

Congratulations to Nevada County Economic Resource Council (ERC) on being awarded the 2014 Science and Research Park Development Grant for $500,000! Below is the public announcement by the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development.

Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Jay Williams visited Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, today to announce the 12 recipients of the 2014 Science and Research Park Development Grants, part of the Regional Innovation Strategies program. The Regional Innovation Strategies (RIS) program, which is being run by the Department’s Economic Development Administration’s (EDA) Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (OIE), is a new initiative designed to advance innovation and capacity-building activities in regions across the country through three different types of grants: i6 Challenge grants, Cluster Grants for Seed Capital Funds, and Science and Research Park Development Grants. Secretary Pritzker announced the recipients of the i6 Challenge grants and Cluster Grants for Seed Capital funds in March.

“Supporting innovators and entrepreneurs at every stage is crucial to ensuring America remains competitive in the global economy,” said Assistant Secretary Williams. “The Regional Innovation Strategies Program lays the groundwork from which centers of research and innovation can take root and thrive in cities across the country. I look forward to seeing what innovative opportunities come from Regional Innovation Strategies’ funding.”

The Science and Research Park Development Grants program provides funding for feasibility and planning for the construction of new or expanded science or research parks, or the renovation of existing facilities. The grantees include
:
Nevada County Economic Resource Council Foundation, Inc.
Location: Grass Valley, CA
Project Name: American Digital Media Leadership Campus
Program: Science & Research Park Development Grants
Award Amount: $500,000

The American Digital Media Leadership Campus’s mission is to leverage a collaboration of all the critical stakeholders who collectively have the expertise, long standing relationships, and resources to build a globally competitive region that is focused upon providing innovative technologies to the rapidly growing, global digital media industry. By facilitating the transfer of technology and business skills between researchers and industry teams, the Campus will have an added benefit of strengthening California and U.S. economic competitiveness.

This public/private collaboration includes innovation-focused digital media and related technology companies residing within the region; local, state and federal governments, including national labs and world trade center organizations; higher educational institutions with research programs relevant to the digital media industry; a highly technical engineering workforce; angel investors and venture capitalists; a vast array of community organizations, vital broadband providers including one with an emerging gigabyte fiber-optic broadband network coming online; and a partnership with the regional EDA-recognized economic development district, Sierra Economic Development Corporation (SEDCORP).

[later] OK, the 23may15 update has link to Nevada City ideas for this money.

Of the current board, there might or might not be one or two who actually understand growing a business and tech.

It looks to me a cool way to make a one time investment in digital media equipment and then watch it get obsolete over the next five years while a grant writer tries to find money to do it again, but that just may be my cynicism on parade.

Patricia Smith

George, do you know if the ERC plans to build a digital media college from scratch or are they planning on reviving the old Grass Valley Media facilities?

Patricia Smith

George, 9:58am I'm surprised at your post about outside agitators being shipped into Ferguson without citing a source. I haven't heard this anywhere else. While anything is possible, it does seem like a blantant attempt to shift the focus off the misbehavior by the police. The gov't has infiltrated demonstrators ever since I can remember (most recently against Occupy Wall Street).

BTW, I have gone to protests in SF, Sacramento and Yuba recently. Does that make me an "outside agitator?"

Bill Tozer

Oh Patricia, you are indeed an outside agitator to those who think cannabis smells like marijuana which smells like skunk weed, you rabble rouser you.

Once joined in a protest on the street in front of a college cause the county was going to lop off all the pretty trees lining the road to widened the roadway. Boy oh boy, the grammar school next door joined in and one teacher was busy lifting little cute 1st and 2nd graders up into the lower limbs. The county workers got on the walkie-talkies and loaded up their saws and moved on....until Summer Vacation when they widened the road.

Not aware of police misconduct in Fergersen. Since "Hands Up, Don't Shoot" never happened, I hope you did not buy one of those "Hands Up" tee shirts or hoodies. That would be silly, would it not? Perhaps a "Pants Up, Don't Poop" tee shirt would be more app-pra-pro.

George Rebane

PatriciaS 1047am - You are, of course, right; I should have cited the source - yesterday's Bret Baier 'Special Report' on FN. I'll see if I can also get a link. Thanks for the knuckle rap.

PatriciaS 1037am - No, I have no idea how this money has been purposed, and who will get to spend it for what. It sounds like more government money being pissed away for feel good projects that go nowhere (like the bullet train), or worse, do harm (like the 'projects' AB32 has spawned). So now a question for our liberal readers - please report where on your favorite outlets this story has been told.

This is from Breitbart which you respect.

Only two Senate Republicans from the entire conference of 54 members have admitted they read the details of President Barack Obama’s secret Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal as of this time.

“Has the senator gone into the room where the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is bend held and read the ‘living agreement’ section of the deal that is not available to the public (and which senators can’t even take notes about)?” Breitbart News asked every single office.

Again, only Sessions and Lee confirmed they did.

Patricia Smith

Todd, 6:17am. Why do you keep asking for things that are impossible to produce? Paul E's point is that only two senators have read the TPP BECAUSE IT IS SECRET (although 600 corporate lobbyists have had input in the provisions of the treaty). We need another Edward Snowden to release the treaty to the public. The fact that they want to fast-track it, taking away the ability for amendments, says volumes. If the TPP was a good thing, they would be heralding the treaty from all corners.

I read something disturbing yesterday that really ticked me off about Obama and the TPP. It seems a resolution passed in the Senate that could force Malaysia out of the TPP because of their horrible record on human trafficking, but Obama wants to make exceptions for this country.

From the HuffPost: Last month, the Senate Finance Committee approved a Menendez amendment that would bar the administration from fast-tracking trade deals with countries that tolerate human trafficking. The State Department has long included Malaysia on its list of countries with serious human trafficking violations, as its government effectively tolerates slavery, including sex slavery. Forced labor is particularly prevalent in the Malaysian electronics industry. The White House insists that including Malaysia in TPP would improve the country’s labor record (although they have not made any moves to stop these practices). Sorry, the link was too long to post here.

We need to call out our parties of choice whenever they deviate from their stated platform. The "my party, right or wrong" attitude is crippling our country. I'm saying loud and clear, Obama is on the wrong side of TPP.

Todd Juvinall

Thanks fish. 65! So the FUE thinks we are all nutty eh? Jeeze, that cracks me up!

Todd Juvinall

Patrizia, review Paul's comments. He is flipping out about the treaty yet hasn't read it. That is my point.

Gregory

The TPP won't be secret when actually up for a vote, the procedural machinations to date aren't the main event.

I fully expect there will be something to hate for everyone once the office of the President decides foreign negotiations are complete and secrecy is no longer appropriate.

Seems to me that Seperate But Equal is alive and well. Because of our wise Department of Justice's all knowing color blind extreme pressure, the Fergensen PD will now have all the black officers patrol the crime infested barrio beat (black neighborhoods) and the white cops are being pulled out of there and are to patrol whitey neighbors. And never the twain shall meet.
Boy, that sounds like segregation of the police force to this humble observer. Plus, it is not fair or equatable. The blacks cops will be working their tails off chasing down folks running through back yards and scaling fences and being attacked by angry protective dogs all night long, while the white cops will be sitting in their patrol cars guarding gated security alarmed houses waiting for some action besides trying to come up with a four letter word for "extinct bird" to finish the crossword puzzle. It ain't fair! Not what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. envisioned.

Flippin out? You should be to! The fact that the senate has Fast Tracked the bill without having read it with the provision that it cannot be amended or altered when presented for a final vote is indeed distrubing to me as it should be to you. Obama, whom you hold in great disdain, has been given the green light without congressional oversight to draft the agreement for an up or down vote is totally wrong and virtually without precedent.

The TPP was negotiated in secret by corporate lobbyists and government lawyers. Even Congress doesn't know what's in it because they havent read it, but TPP is to be hustled into law through a super-rushed, rubber-stamp process called "Fast Track".

The only way the bill can be read is by a Senator with no aides for a limited amount of time in a secret room. They are forbidden to talk about or openly debate details of its contents. It was opposed by the Progressives in the Democratic party and Libertarian and Tea Party Republicans, not sucn unlikely bed partners sharing their concerns about secret deals. It waspushed by McConnell and Obama because they represent the heart of the Republicrats who will differ of social issues and enough stuff to make them look independent but know how to bring home the beef to the big money interests when the chips are down as they definatly are in this case.

Gregory

Just wondering which passage that had a bee up your bonnet, Joe:

"After four years of increased use of the Northern Sea Route by vessels going in transit between Europe and Asia, 2014 saw a steep downturn. The amount of cargo transported in transit dropped 77 percent compared to last year."

http://barentsobserver.com/en/arctic/2014/12/northern-sea-route-traffic-plummeted-16-12

Hate to break it to you, Joe, but Arctic ice melts in the summertime, and that passage has been explored going back to the 1600's. It's far from being the ice free zone you're imagining.

Russ Steele

Joe Smith@03:10PM That was in summer of 2013.

Northern Sea Route Primarily Carries Oil, Much of the Cargo Involving Russia
Cargo shipping volume through the Northern Sea Route is rising as Arctic ice melts, according to a new report.
The opening up of the Arctic for commercial cargo offers a faster route for some shipments between Europe and Asia, and holds the promise of increased trade for once icebound ports in the High North of Arctic countries such as Russia, Norway and Canada.

However, much of the new traffic through the Northern Sea Route is one-way shipments of fossil fuels from Northern Europe to Asia or is between Russian ports, according to a report to be released Friday (Oct. 31) by the Arctic Institute, a Washington think tank.

Ice details can be found here: http://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index/index.html

Todd Juvinall

Paul Emery, regarding the TPP. No one has read it publicly and my understanding is when it is ready it will be in the open for debate etc. I am optimistic that the free trade will bring jobs to our country and not the giant "sucking sound". The "corporations" you so hate employ millions of Americans and maybe they care.

Oh, Paul, can you give me the links that tell us that "corporate lobbyists" and government lawyers negotiated this? I assume a trade deal is between nations and logically there are many in the negotiations?

You left yourself wide open on this one. The giant "sucking sound" you refer too is attributed to Ross Perot durint hiw 1992 run for President. This is a pretty good summary of Tea Party concerns from the venerable Liberty Under Fire website.

Tea Party supporters oppose the treaty primarily because it violates two of its core values: constitutional limited government and the free market............Amplifying the concern over secrecy and deception is the president’s push for fast track status, meaning an up or down vote of both houses of congress with no debate or amendments. This is blatantly unconstitutional as it, in essence, voids them as the sole architects of law. They have a function far more worthy than merely approving or disapproving law made by benefiting corporations.

http://www.libertyunderfire.org/about-us/

Todd Juvinall

Paul Emery, I baited you and you took it. Tell me how it is that since 1992 the country has seen 20 million Mexicans and others from south of the border sneaking into the USA. If all the jobs headed out because of NAFTA it seems strange these illegals would have stayed ion their home countries to take advantage of the huge transfer of our businesses and jobs.

Rodd Perot turned out to be a nut anyway. He had moments of coherency but when he said the CIA was trying to upset his daughters wedding I knew he was a nut. A rich one though.

I find your terror of the TPP simultaneously ironic and hypocritical in these days of Omnibus spending bills....already largely written by special interest lobbyists and crammed full of delicious pork for things like Obamaphones, aircraft the military doesn't want, and 500K for new media centers in Nevada City. Not to mention laws like Obamacare that was sold as a tax that wasn't a tax except when it was and championed by a lying scumbag like Jonathan Gruber. As mentioned previously Obamacare was conjured and sold for the benefit of health care companies and to increase the reach and scope of the federal government and other than hearing you say that it doesn't "go far enough" don't recall any complaining from you about the machinations required to pass and implement it.

So....am I in favor of TPP? I can't say as I haven't read it. But like all things that empower the government further probably not.

JOY PULLMANN: The Civil Disobedience Charles Murray Wants Has Already Arrived.

The federal do-gooders who framed No Child Left Behind back in 2001 never envisioned that parents would take exception to their mandate that every child in grades three through eight (and once in high school) face annual math and reading tests. So the law is entirely silent on what happens if, as is happening now for the first time, thousands of parents across the country pull their kids in protest.

It’s hard to convey just how extraordinary this is. So here are a few snippets from just the past week’s news. In Germantown, Wisconsin, 62 percent of public-school students are sitting out tests. The district has been a hotbed of Common Core opposition, with a local school board among one of the handful nationwide to reject Common Core and decide to run with its own, higher-quality, curriculum. In Maine, “Cape Elizabeth saw 32 percent of its eighth-graders, 18 percent of its seventh-graders and 64 percent of its high school juniors opt out. There are many examples of high opt out rates across the state, but a reliable statewide tally isn’t yet available.” A bill to secure parents’ right to excuse their kids from mandatory tests recently passed the Delaware House 36 to 3 after a blaze of opt-outs left local schools scrambling. “A wide-ranging bill that would eliminate [national Common Core] tests in Ohio and limit state achievement tests to three hours per year passed the House 92-1 on Wednesday,” reported the Columbus Dispatch.

This is nowhere near a set of isolated incidents. In Washington state, every single junior at Nathan Hale High School (natch) refused state tests this spring. Somewhere around 200,000 children refused tests this spring in New York and, contrary to race-baiting from U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, substantial numbers of these defiant parents were not white rich people. FairTest, a lefty organization not keen on rigorous data, nevertheless keeps compiling an impressive number of similar news stories each week.

What does this mean? Does it matter? While the opt-out numbers are unprecedented in American history, they still represent a very small proportion of U.S. schoolkids. I think they do matter, and that they signal many Americans are ready for Murray’s civil disobedience project.

Are you ready?

Fish it is pretty interesting that Paul Emery would vigorously support Ocare which has killed millions of jobs, mostly on the low end ofthe pay scale, yet is outraged about the TPP. No one has printed it out so we can see it so I am withholding judgement as I said, so I guess the outrage of the left, including Paul Emery, is contrived!

What is the old saying? One man's joy is another man's outrage? Or something \like that. Hey and we see SYRCL gets a $600,000 "grant" of taxpayers money to grow some weeds in the high country. You gotta love this country!

Bill Tozer

Mr. Paul and those who aren't Mr. Paul. Everything I hear about the trade thang is cloaked in generalities and no ink on the bill yet. It would be like commenting on the Treyvon Martin wrestling match or the Mr. Brown of Fergensen, Mo thang until the facts come a'dribbling in. I withhold judgement. If it lifts one single little child out of poverty in some unheard village beyond our borders, that who am I to put it down. That poor villager is a child of The Universe.

But, the real focus should be right here in our own backyard and helping our elderly citizens. That is where my priorities are, albeit just for this day in history...or maybe for just a few hours on this day in history, never to return.
A heart warming story like this always lifts my spirits and reminds me where my priorities should be:

BillT, very good. If the TPP is as bad as the left says without knowing aht it says, then it just might be good? Anyway, Paul and Ben believe in the redistribution of America wealth and if it sends all our money to help the welps over there, then who is to say it is wrong? I mean, if we can wreck the bottom line for those dastardly corporations and let the villagers in Cambodia get the dough, then I would assume they and Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren would be really really happy!

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Is this another example of gov't intrusion/regulation or the corporations dictating government?

It hardly matters. Government wanted it.....the healthcare companies were happy to go along.

Much greater control over that 12% of the economy....government lives for that. The insurance companies wanted the guaranteed income resulting from the compulsory purchase mandate. I can't wait to watch them jump ship or screw uncle stupid for more money later! Best part of all.....they've barely covered any of 33 million uninsured that the law was supposed to help!

It would be funny if it wasn't sad! Ah...who am I kidding....it's funny as hell!

I never supported Obamacare. I was all for single payer health care.

Joe Koyote

Depending on whose numbers one wants to believe, the range for Obamacare uninsured enrollment runs between 5 million on the low end to 16.4 million on the high end.

"Government wanted it.....the healthcare companies were happy to go along." Yes, government wanted it, so the US would not be the only developed country in the world without some kind of public healthcare plan and it has been a Democratic party priority since the Clinton days, but we all know that Obama is a corporate goon, just like the Clintons, and every mainstream Republican. But I think that if it would have been a pure gov't plan it would have been "single payer", which was never seriously on the table. It should have been called "republican care" but that is another story.

Checking your favored site, I found the same sorts of Warmistas as can be found at the usual activist sites. Hint... skepticalscience isn't a science site.

Here's a weather site, check about halfway down for histographs showing the number of days the Northwest Passage and the Northeast Passage have been fully free of ice:
http://weathernews.com/GIC/nreport/ntopics/2014/20141028.html

The trends do not look promising, do they? Do your designated authorities have differing counts?

Then there's Arctic air temperatures, here's the Danish record, the last couple of summers have been significantly cooler than normal, with a fraction of the usual number of days above freezing.

Your hyperbole misses the mark. Again. We're not facing a drastic warming event in the Arctic. We do have varying weather.

I am dumbfounded (and I realize I am leaving myself wide open with that choice of words) that more of you aren't outraged at the fast-track process for approving TPP. You say you'll wait until the details are released before you state an opinion. By then, it will be too late. The whole point of "fast-track" is that there will be NO discussion and No amendments.

These trade deals allow corporations to skirt US labor laws and avoid environmental protections (no wonder you aren't upset about this). Corporations rove the world looking for third world counries to exploit - and when the workers get "too uppity" by demanding living wages, they move to the next unfortunate country. This is modern day slavery.

With TPP, they won't have to move. They can simply sue a country for loss of "potential" profits if they raise wages.

BTW, 88% of fast food workers are over 20. As American jobs keept dwindling, entry level jobs are all that is left which is why so many people are working two or three jobs. You would have to work a 250 hour work week to afford an averaged price 2 BD apt in LA, a 350 hour week in SF makin minimum wages. What is wrong with this picture?

Shouldn't it be enough that Obama wants it for you to oppose it? It's kinda funny that you conservatives are siding with Obama, while progressives oppose him on this issue (because we base our opinions on principles, not personalities).

But I think that if it would have been a pure gov't plan it would have been "single payer", which was never seriously on the table.

Good thing too....government is already is already driving Medicare into the ditch.....why let them destroy two actuarially unsound health care programs?

But, but, but Patricia....didn't you know that under P^3 (Progressive Pelosi Protocol) most really important legislation requires you to pass it in order to see what's in it?

This is your 2nd hat tip this week Patricia.....kudos!

Paul Emery

George, Gregory, Emery and anyone else who wants to chime in what is the historical precedence of the Fast Track process for TPP that is being supported by the Senate? When has it been used in the past.

As a conservative, I'm totally against the TPP.
If for no other reason than the secrecy and the increased power it gives the executive branch. But then I was against Obamacare for the same reasons and for that I, and others were called racist.
Why aren't the folks against the TPP racist as well?
It's a total laugh to see the lefties here all howl for the govt to take over health care. The same stooges of the evil capitalists that you complain about will now have total control of your health care. The same govt that runs the NSA and the VA will now control your access to all health care. Does that even begin to make sense?
And yes - that applies to 'single payer'. The payer aint you. The one who pays the piper calls the tune. Single payer is total control of your health care by the same lackys of the running dog capitalists you claim you hate. That will include B Sanders, who we now realize thanks to Patricia is a stooge of the capitalists.
I think you lefties had better go figure out what the heck you really do believe and get back to us.

Patricia Smith

Fish, I am not a fan of Pelosi either (and don't get me started on Feinstein). BTW, how long do I have to accumulate my third hat tip?

Todd Juvinall

Paul Emery, you never supported Ocare? You want an even worse healthcare system in "sngle payer"? Jeeze do you know how ridiculous your comment is?

Regarding Ocare and the numbers. Sorry but it is a flop. It was sold to the country (well by 100% od democrats) as a way to insure those 40 million uninsured. Well, maybe that number was made up from whole cloth. After two years of enrollment Ocare may be maxed out at the true number of about seven million. And that seven million is mostly BS because the taxpayers pick up the "subsidies" to get the "poor" enrolled. It is all bogus.

The TPP terror by the left is totally cracking me up. Patricia has not read the treaty, all her pals have not read it, all the big shots in DC have not read it and yet she is opposed to it. Hey Patricia, what if the treaty says on;y "union" employees can get the jobs? Would you be for it then?
