George Rebane
Voice from behind the curtain – ‘Pay no attention to the correlation.’
[update] A reader has pointed out that the above crime map is inaccurate and cites and article in the 16nov16 WaPo (here) that claims to present better data in the map below. The article's conclusion is italicized.
The violent crime map shows clusters of counties with high rates in South Carolina, Florida, the Memphis area and New Mexico. Several of the clusters are in rural areas where a small number of crimes may generate a relatively high crime rate because there are few people living there. ... The latest data available is from 2014. Reported crime rates for some large cities have gone up over the past two years. ... The National Archive of Criminal Justice Data generates the county-level crime summaries from FBI data that is reported by police agencies. In rural areas, a county may have one police agency. But large urban counties may have several cities with their own police departments, as well as county-wide agencies. And statewide police agencies may also handle reported crimes. The NACJD adjusts the data for agencies that only report for part of the year and distributes incidents from statewide agencies to local counties by population.
With this conclusion and upon closer examination of the WaPo map, I will let my opening statement stand.
Nevada County Voices has dropped RR from its community website listings. Since its inception RR has enjoyed coverage by having its recent posts listed and linked in the site’s ‘Right Wing’ column. The reason for the change is not apparent, especially since RR has always lauded this informative site edited by Dr Anna Haynes. To be frank, the site and its editor are definitely of the Left persuasion – for example, there is no equivalent listing of ‘Left Wing’ sites. Apparently all the remainder of the listed sites have no ideological slant or bias that is apparent to Dr Haynes. Perhaps the removal of RR is part and parcel of the local Left’s perennial call to silence my public voice and involvement as part of their overall crusade to deny opposing opinions and viewpoints a place in the community forum. In any case it was fun while it lasted, and we will continue featuring Nevada County Voices in the Our Links panel on the right. [update] Oops! My tears flowed too soon; RR has been reinstated in its usual slot. Now the only nit I have left to pick is my envy of fellow blogger Mr Todd Juvinall (Sierra Dragon's Breath) who enjoys having the last ten of his posts being listed while the rest of us are limited to five max. Oh well, Anna always did like Todd the best.
RoboVote - a new tool for capturing group preferences and making group decisions. For years I have designed, purveyed, and used customized decision support systems, especially the kind that help extract useful information from groups of people engaged in some common pursuit. Recently a team of AI researchers at Harvard released RoboVote (more here and here), a free AI-based, online tool to aid in performing such functions in an optimal manner. I am recommending its consideration to organizations to which I belong. Take a look at it and you will want to do the same.
[update] The WSJ reports "U.S. Factories Are Working Again; Factory Workers, Not So Much. Donald Trump plans to reignite industrial job growth, but many low-skilled former factory workers are frozen out." As has been reported here for years, the return of manufacturing to the US does not mean that an equivalent (to previous years) jobs will be returning. Does no one understand the serious nature of growing systemic unemployment with the acceleration of technology? Why is this always a surprise and a recent discovery by some maven or other?
[19dec16 update] Today’s Union informs us that we now have a permanent group of local progressives organized to become the perennial protesters of the Republican controlled (but liberal bureaucratized) federal government. They call themselves ‘Resistance U.S.’, formed to “promote progressive values and ideas”, and appear visibly uninformed about our Constitution and what happened last month. For example, as a local embodiment of Moonbeam's Minions, they seek to “Restore Democracy”, a form of government on these shores that never was and wisely was never intended. We will revisit their demonstrations from time to time as they successfully illustrate what divides us. (more here)

I didn't vote for Hillary Todd so I have no comment. Trump is the one who is claiming the virtuous path and claims to be draining the swamp. Perhaps he should start with his family

That was a meaningless statement. Would you care to try again, using enough words to actually encapsulate a complete thought that would get at least a gentleman's C- from your high school English or Social Studies teacher?
At the moment, there is no solid evidence (including written statements, as opposed to "reliable sources say", from US intelligence officials) that the Russians did anything that interfered with lawful elections. If you disagree, links please.
Until there's real evidence and not just rumors channeled through the WaPo, Times or HuffPo, you're just trying to blow smoke up folks' arses.

Paul Emery, both links supplied by you have nothing that matches your claim of pay for play. And the latest news is there is no news. Never was from any trusted site and the boys withdrew before any money was raised. You are simply a comsriacty nut.
You say you did not vote for Hillary but you defensd her diligently and always have. Why is that?
Trumps family is now your target? You crack me up. The are wildly successful and attractive people. The brand in planetary. But hey even a KVMR partime DJ can claim he is better.

So much for "draining the swamp" according to Newt. this Trump is little more than a carnival barker selling corn dogs. Can't be trusted with a word he says.
According to Newt
"Now, just weeks before taking office, Trump has decided to sideline his pledge to “drain the swamp,” his ally Newt Gingrich said Wednesday.
“I’m told he now just disclaims that,” Gingrich (R-Ga.) the former House speaker, told NPR’s “Morning Edition.” “He now says it was cute, but he doesn’t want to use it anymore.”

Now this may be a legitimate beef! We'll see.
Cabinet picks don't seem particularly swampy....Mattis (been around DC for a while but certainly not from "State") Tillerson, Pudzner not so much.......Why McConnells wife got the call......?? Mnuchin just looks bad from an optics standpoint.....I wouldn't think that anyone interested in draining the swamp would even consider a Goldman Sachs alum?

Don. Maybe the ambassador position for the State of Jefferson. Unless Paul moves to Kalif.

Paul, Google it or try the LA Times or Pravda.
Walt was right. More the reason to join the State of Jefferson. I want to be an American first, not an free range egghead. Oh yeah, they said the CHP would defend them, lol.
Even the States Rights fanatic Patrick Henry (who opposed the Continential Congress and later turned down an appointment to SCOTUS, Sec of State, and another Cabinet position).....even that rascal Patrick Henry said "I may be a Virginian, but I am an American first".

Obama's approval ratings are the highest of any President including Reagan at the end of his term. Currently he's sitting at 57-39 Gallup approval rating. Even Fox News has him at 53-41 for a +12 positive Care to compare him to Bush who was at 29 at the end of his term. this is the mood of the public Trump is inheriting. Gonna to be lots of fun. Kalif. is already picking up where "O" is leaving off. No more AR style weapons to be had after today. (too scary looking) The price gouging was real bad. Five grand for a 2500 dollar weapon. Good thing I bought a while back.
Paul needs to help out here. how is Commie Kalif. (on the longshot chance it gets there)
going to protect itself? Mexico is looking to retake that real estate. China will be looking for debt repayment as well. The stoned loons just haven't thought this half baked idea through.
But Paul might want to start saving for that 80% taxation that Kalif. will impose. Who will the Frisco deadbeats get their free stuff from?
But HAY! They won't have Trump to worry about... Oh. Wait.. That's the first place they will go looking for handouts. How do you think that will go Paul?

Posted by: Don Bessee | 21 December 2016 at 07:38 PM
Let the in-fighting begin! Let's get ready to rumbbbbbbblllllllleeeee.
They didn’t mince words. “They fucking ignored us on all these [three] battleground states [while] we were sounding the alarm for months,” Sanders surrogate Nomiki Konst told the Daily Beast. “We kept saying to each other like, ‘What the fuck, why are they just blowing us off? They need these voters more than anybody.’”
After Monday’s expected defeat, even allies have no more reason to tolerate Clinton’s self-pitying. But thanks to her lack of foresight, they — especially Sanders — can now claim an electoral vote for President.
Gawd, Hillary has become the first Presidential Canidate to lose 3 times in 6 weeks. I just never grow tired of winning. Maybe someday, but that day is a long way off.

Well let's see about those approval numbers for Barry. I think I'll use the lamestream approach and say this. 43% of Americans oppose President Obama. Mainly they don't like him. There, now that makes it right.
Posted by: Todd Juvinall | 21 December 2016 at 09:09 PM
Dr. Rebane.
Obama is a likeable fellow. So, people like him personally. They really like what he says.
https://www.facebook.com/RowdyConservatives/photos/a.217983685002343.55586.217926015008110/980343875432983/?type=3&theater
They like the idea that America is liked again...by France.and others.. Liked, but not respected, feared, or taken seriously, can't be trusted to be a stand up ally, or even as good as her word. The Left can relate to that. It's important to be liked. Even a jerk is instantly liked when he buys the house a round,
They like what Obama says to the bitter end. Obama just said he is proud he kept America free of a terrorist attack on his watch. People like hearing that. Nevermind San Bernardino, the Boston Marathon, Fort Hood, the recruiting center, etc. Guess those unfortunate events were mental health issues, not Islamic terrorism.
Obama just bragged his Administration has been scandal free. A remarkable accomplishment. That is good to hear. Obama did a great job of being free of scandals. Nevermind Fast & Furious, the IRS, the VA, Benghazi, etc.
Obama promised the most transparent administration in US history. He even enlisted the Russians and Wikileaks to help facilitate this endeavor. Talk about transparency.
Hillary is not liked so much, but she promised a 3rd term of Obama. Gotta feel sorry for Hillary. She spent 40 years working so very hard to become President only to lose out to a guy who picked up politics for a hobby.
Do people want a third term of Obama? Nah, they would rather have their doctor back, their jobs back, their neighborhoods back, their slain police officers back, their hope back.
Posted by: Bill Tozer | 21 December 2016 at 10:50 PM
You're right. I didn't vote for AObama ion "12. I think he was a pretty mediocre Presidebt wih a disastrous foreign policy. I'm only reporting what I see. What I do see is Trump is starting out with a dreadful approval rating so he has no room for error. The fun will begin in just a few weeks. Sorry to put you guys in such a tizzy. Good night.

Merry Christmas Paul. You have made it a great Christmas Season and guareented to make it one fantastic New Year! Thanks for the laughs and entertainment you provide. You make this site delightful. Merry Christmas again, Mr. Paul, and thanks for making this the most joyous time of year....in many a year. You are one funny guy. Keep those laughs coming and keep spreading the cheer. So much to celebrate this year.
We need to never lose the attitude of gratitude you provide to so many here.
Life is indeed good and full of much needed hope after what our blessed nation has been through. I feel like doing an Irish jig. You are the giver of happy feet. Bless you. Todd, it's Ok to say Merry Christmas again. After all, Christmas is a national holiday recognized by our federal government and all government employee unions. It a wonderful time of the year.....albeit if feels both strange and liberating to greet someone with an unapologetic and cheerful "Merry Christmas" or Happy Hanukkah". You can even say it without looking around and whispering. I almost forgot what it was like.
Of course, Hanukkah starts Christmas Eve and last until Jan 1, so you get to say Happy Hanukkah a bunch of times until you say "Happy New Year."
Paul, Happy Druid Day whenever that comes and God Bless you, Tiny Tim. It's magic time. A time of Hope.
To our friends on the Far Left, I mean no offense. Communists do not celebrate any spiritual holidays, just wohip the State 365 days a year. It's all good and I understand. Finding 3 wise and a virgin is an impossible task, so why bother? Happy May Day!
Posted by: Bill Tozer | 22 December 2016 at 09:00 AM
Yeah Todd I'm going to enjoy Druidmas with an all night log pounding at the river with a bevy of Sierra Wood Nymphs. I told them you were invited but they said no. Sorry my friend.

word has it you are going to celebrate XMAS with your Republican friends doing a ceremonial blond hair dying and comb over as a bonding to your spiritual leader The Donald. Send a picture with your blond hair combover and I'll share it with the wood nymphs. Perhaps they will change their minds.

Paul, you're reciting the Fake News that was generated by two conflated issues:
1) the Russians were hacking into Democratic computers
2) somebody gave files to Wikileaks
Somebody(ies) in one or more intelligence services (that are politicized) made the decision that since Democratic dirt was in (2), it must be that the Russians wanted Trump to win. QED. Leaving out the undemonstrated link from 1) to 2).
In parallel, the WikiLeaks people have been adamant that the files did not come from Russian sources, but insiders who had legal access to them. Sort of. Like Snowden had legal access to all the stuff he stole.
Paul, you and the Democratic Party fake news sources want the Russians to be at fault for their Clinton losing. And that has not been determined; no, anonymous intelligence sources telling the NY Times that it might be so isn't enough.
You are jumping to conclusions that have not been established. Not by a long shot and in the minds of the anyone but Trump brigade, it has not only been established but of course, Trump and Putin are in cahoots. Madness.
Trump won. People need to get over it.

Silent Night. Wholly night.
Except for the crickets.

Step back mister....remember Uncle Paul asks the questions.......
Oh and Steves annual Christmas Rant.....certainly a treasured holiday tradition of mine....is posted at the FUEs! Apparently Steve is a reformed secularist as opposed to Orthodox.....as he's omitted references to the traditional anti semitism and substituted "attacks on people’s weight". Personally I think it loses something with this change but to each his own!

Paul Emery never answers your questions. That is why he is a lousy conversationalist.

Now boys, there is a reason Paul does not celebrate Christmas.

About them Russians hurting My Gal's chances of winning...... What does Uncle Shotgun Joe have to say about it?
He recalled watching a Trump rally in Pennsylvania near where he grew up and thinking, “Son of a gun. We may lose this election.”
Biden told the L.A. Times, “They’re all the people I grew up with. They’re their kids. And they’re not racist. They’re not sexist. But we didn’t talk to them.”
Clinton took criticism during the campaign for at one point describing swaths of Trump voters as part of a “basket of deplorables,” remarks she later walked back. Biden reportedly argued that Democrats indeed created a false conflict between “progressive” values and those of the working class.
“What are the arguments we’re hearing? ‘Well, we’ve got to be more progressive.’ But in the meantime, you can’t eat equality. You know?”
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2016/12/23/biden-rips-democrats-elitism-faults-party-for-failing-to-reach-working-class.html
Yep, Hillary lost because, like Paul, progressives talk at the people, not to the people.
My Gal lost because of elitism.....and because the voters rejected progressive ideas.
If the Russians were so good at influencing the election, how do you explain the fact that Hillary won the popular vote, a fact pointed to repeatidy by the Losers??

Continuing crickets, and PE is batting .000 on his prognostications over the past year.
I find it amazing how quickly the fake news stories about Russians stealing the election faded once the Electoral College vote ended with Trump's lead over Clinton increasing. Leads one to believe the whole story was to dry to induce a coup d'etat, subverting a legal election, doesn't it? Didn't work.

I have been responding directly to Scott's intelligent question. Throw one at me and I'll give it a go. I'm in the mood. kinda of a Christmas thing.

I got one for ya' Paul. It might apply to you soon enough.
http://www.breitbart.com/2nd-amendment/2016/12/23/obama-administration-finalizes-social-security-gun-ban/
" The Los Angeles Times reported that the ban would be sweeping; that it would cover those who are unable to manage their own affairs for a multitude of reasons–from “subnormal intelligence or mental illness” to “incompetency,” an unspecified “condition,” or “disease.”
Would just being a Progressive count as an "unspecified “condition,” or “disease.”?

Paul "someone please let me play" Mushmouth sez
I didn't vote for Hillary Todd so I have no comment. Trump is the one who is claiming the virtuous path and claims to be draining the swamp. Perhaps he should start with his family
Posted by: Paul Emery | 21 December 2016 at 01:06 PM
Nice, Paul, nice. Start with his family, eh? Like those two sodomites that verbally attacked Trump's daughter and grandchildren yesterday??? Screaming at children? As they were sitting in coach and could not move??? A young mother with children??
Paul, would you like me to make some calls to some very nasty pissed off anti-social types who owe me a couple favors and have them start with your family? Of course not. That is not who we on the sunny side of the street are. Maybe that is just who Druids are or something...people in the shadows. You are a real creepy dude. I will exercise some restraint and enjoy the rest of this fine day, creep.

Our intelligence services overwhelmingly believe The Russians interfered with our election This is established news not fake news Even Senator McConnell believes that as does John McCain and Lindsey Graham and many others You are very much in the minority to believe otherwise What else can I say ? My basic question is why are the Russians celebrating trumps victory if it wasn't something they felt was good for them I think we just have to accept we have different views on this.

PE 459, cut it out, that's just lame posturing. For our friends- Happy Hanukah start!

Paul, once again, your shallow naiveté has led you to believing the fake news of the day from folks who, 40 years ago, you wouldn't have believed if they told you water was wet.
The CIA isn't on the record, and the FBI isn't buying it. The whole thing has quieted down because the charade was to try to herd the Electoral College towards throwing the election.
Didn't work. Trump won fair and square. Get over it.
Posted by: Gregory | 24 December 2016 at 10:05 PM
Paul, learn how to read. For once. Just once. It would be a start.
Look, you are just wired differently being an artist type. You see an arrangement of notes as harmony and order and life. Dr. Rebane sees mathmatetics as harmony and order and how this world is operates, how everything is.
I saw Trump from day one and know exactly how he operates. To me it's no mystery at all. You see chaos and disorder and puzzlement. I see perfect execution.
It's just the way we are wired, each different. Left side, right side of the brain stuff.
I must confess I don't believe for 3 seconds that you are innocently asking questions to grasp an understanding. You have biased intentions to oppose Trump from the night of the election. You ask and want answers to events that have not come to pass, are hypothetical, and almost demand someone here to agree with you fears or defend themselves. That is they way you operate. You are of a double mind. You seek not understanding nor knowledge, you just want to argue and hit the same points over and over again until you get your desired rise out of someone.
If you believe there are no absolutes, that in and of itself is an absolute statement and thus the foundation upon which you stand is on a false premise.
I see you as manipulating and I suppose I may view you in a better light when you are in your music/pot realm. You are the sole voice of opposition. That is not a problem. You bring false motives, thus no integrity. You mind is already made up before you ever type a word.
I could lay out the reasons Putin does what he does and why. I know that kind of man well and understand Russia's global aspirations and domestic needs and the strong nationalism and pride of the people of Mother Russia. The need for a strong leader has been in their blood since the days the wayward tribes of Russia asked the Vikings to rule over them. You do not understand deep love of country.....nationalism.
I understand Trump and can rattle off the top of my head 5 main reasons why Putin would prefer Trump anyway of the week. Putin sees the One Europe as the aggressor expanding more and more till they come smack dab against his borders under the guise of NATO, gobbling up even the tiniest of states, a true threat to the region,.his region, for the sole purpose to squeeze him. I could go on and on and hit the Middle East and the US as the aggressor and what's really emerging there as it affects Russia and Obama's policy of a big Arab State, economies of scale.. But why, it's wasted breath.
Same with what makes Trump tick. Too easy, too plain as the nose on your face. But, again, wasted breath. No answer would ever satisfy you because you vision is too narrow, too limited, too focused at looking at the crumbs on the floor and seeing only bad Trump. And you don't want to learn. You won't allow it to compute. So, remain in everlasting turmoil and frustration. Contempt prior to investigation. I could be wrong.
There are no more victims anymore, just volunteers. Ya Paul, I threatened you and your family, if you have one. Rightttt. You are a regular Eisteen. Play the song over and over again and again in your head.

Paul, what are those ol' basics of journalism?
Who
What
When
Where
Why
Be specific.
I've got no problem with the McCain's calling for an investigation. A good investigation will shed light, unlike unnamed sources chatting with the NY Times, a subsidiary of the Democratic Nat'l Committee.

Warming relations with Russia has been a US goal for 40 years. Even O tried the reset.
"Steven Pifer, a former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, noted that it's not yet clear how far Trump will go to accommodate Russia. The president-elect’s pick for defense secretary is James Mattis, a retired Marine general who views Moscow as a major threat. And Trump, who prides himself on his deal-making skills, may ultimately conclude that Russia has little to offer."

Good Christmas Morning one and all.
Things must not be well next door. Yelling, cussing, knockdown dragout(literally drug out the door) fight, the sounds of glass breakage and such. So we sat on the frosted over porch chairs with coffee in had, and watched the show.
