Americans have always been told to keep their powder dry; well, the Democrats want you to let government take over that job.
Systemic unemployment, in conjunction with the Singularity a much discussed issue on these pages over the years, is now beginning to draw the attention of more and more analysts, commentators, and media outlets. A reader and correspondent picked up this piece from PJ Media that acknowledges (here) that the disappearing jobs (even for the middle class) will not be replaced by new jobs to re-employ the growing cohort of the permanently redundant.
[update] Mr George Boardman, our intrepid columnist in The Union, today echoes (here) the liberal line that longtime school choice advocate and now SecEd Betsy DeVos is “unqualified” for her new job; so unqualified in fact that progressive punks physically denied her access to a school she was scheduled to visit. But the real question for Mr Boardman is ‘If DeVos is an unqualified SecEd, what did all her qualified predecessors accomplish for America’s public education during the preceding decades?’ Take your time.
[14feb17 update] A passing note on retired Gen Flynn’s resignation. He did the right thing to resign. And he did the right thing to talk to his Russian contacts as a member of the duly elected incoming president’s team – such a conversation was neither a first in our history nor a violation of the Logan Act. And he was unbelievably foolish to lie to VP Pence about the affair; it was for that that he had to go.
Teacher's salaries comes to mind. Here's the top ten states for *average* salaries... from today's Education Week.
The 10 states where teachers get paid the most:
1. Alaska: $77,843
2. New York: $76,593
3. Connecticut: $75,867
4. California: $72,050
5. Massachusetts: $71,587
6. New Jersey: $70,700
7. Rhode Island: $67,533
8. Maryland: $65,257
9. Illinois: $65,153
10. Virginia: $63,493

Systemic unemployment is something few wish to even mention.
It's a lot like the coming freight train of under and un-funded govt and social liabilities. There is no happy cure and the results down the road will be disastrous for modern society as we know it.
A guaranteed income will probably be phased in as it is just a simplification of what we are doing already. The perverse twist to employing that sort of scheme is that it will cause even more unemployment in the social service sector. And once the permanent unemployment era begins to set in, it will feed on its self and cause a rapidly accelerating downward cycle. Less folks going to work mean less need for transportation, car sales, car repair, child care, uniforms and wardrobes for one's job, etc. Anyone who thinks a large segment of the permanently unemployed (we need a modern acronym - PU is already taken) will blossom into creative flowers has a poor understanding of human nature. Sloth, crime and a general debasement of society will take hold.
On top of all of that cheery news, we have this to deal with as well:
https://www.rt.com/business/377307-jim-rogers-currency-control-cash/
Jim is hardly the first to predict this but this article is a nice summation for those not familiar with something that is already being implemented bit by bit. (unintended pun)
Once you ponder this future, it brings into focus quite sharply how idiotic most govt programs are. They cost billions or trillions and prepare for a future that will never be.
The only action by our govt that I've heard of that addresses this bright and sunny future is news that the military is shifting its focus more towards urban warfare and general unrest.
Cheers!

Re Flynn's resignation etc - liberals really do have bad luck when they try to think. On this topic in the last Sandbox they keep getting the various orthogonal factors dealing with Flynn's 'resignation' and Yates firing all mixed up. Flynn resigned because he lost the confidence of POTUS and VPOTUS. Yates was fired because she disobeyed a direct order from her boss. The subsequent factors are not established and will be revealed pursuant to ongoing investigations and planned litigation. Passing judgment on the direct precursors to these departures in no way implies the acceptance or rejection of any of the other TBD factors of the cases. Capice?

"WASHINGTON — Phone records and intercepted calls show that members of Donald J. Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and other Trump associates had repeated contacts with senior Russian intelligence officials in the year before the election, according to four current and former American officials.
American law enforcement and intelligence agencies intercepted the communications around the same time that they were discovering evidence that Russia was trying to disrupt the presidential election by hacking into the Democratic National Committee, three of the officials said........... "

The implication of Trump campaign l staff communicating and working with Russian intelligence during the election is huge

For a real topic, who heard about Secretary Tillerson's comments at the Netanyahu dinner? Two state solution is not the solution to peace in the middle east. My God, someone who is willing to admit that the 'palestinians' refusal to recognize Israel's right to exist has got to end. ;-)

Posted by: Todd Juvinall | 14 February 2017 at 08:10 PM
Reading that "stellar" NYT story, all the people making the claims are anonymous. My goodness Paul Emery have you no shame. But here is the conclusion of these anonymous sources. Read the last line. So just more liberal media bullshit.
"American law enforcement and intelligence agencies intercepted the communications around the same time they were discovering evidence that Russia was trying to disrupt the presidential election by hacking into the Democratic National Committee, three of the officials said. The intelligence agencies then sought to learn whether the Trump campaign was colluding with the Russians on the hacking or other efforts to influence the election.
The officials interviewed in recent weeks said that, so far, they had seen no evidence of such cooperation."
Posted by: Todd Juvinall | 14 February 2017 at 08:20 PM
He's not likely to be impeached George. Most likely he'll quit. Word is he hates the job and he has very thin skin and has no skills to deal with the craft of government. He doesn't have a clue what's coming after him George, much like what Hillary warned Obama about in "07. I mean Trump didn't even tell his VP Pense that Flynn lied to him for three weeks after he knew. That does not inspire loyalty and instead indicates chaos within the white House.
What we have is the beginning of a coup much like what happened with Nixon when he was left slowly twisting in the wind by his own party. His popular support is dropping at an alarming rate.
He'll be out within two years that will give Pense time to solidify his position as a true Conservative President. In the Repubs favor is the total disarray of the Dems making them a very weak opposition party.

Well Nancy, there he goes again. Paul, no, no, no! I said yesterday that before I could answer your "Yes or No, Yes or No, Yes or No" silly demand, I needed this story to play out for a couple of days before I could answer a premature "yes or no". I needed to hear more information and hear two sides of a story, any story.
I was surprised that Flynn resigned last night and the story moved quicker than I anticipated. I also said if Flynn did a bad thing, then he will be gone. Lying is a bad thing, He is gone. Surprised he did not do the "I don't remember, I do not recall, as best as I can recollect" song and dance that we always heard everytime from anyone close to the previous administration.
Flynn will be remember as the first one assisinated by the shadow government in 2017.
Still, all in all, very slow news day. Like watching the dam lower 3 inches an hour. Yawn.

Flynn also was interviewed by the FBI early on and denied speaking with the Russians about sanctions.
"Two law enforcement sources confirm that the FBI interviewed National Security Adviser Michael Flynn in the early days of the Trump administration about his conversations with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak, CBS News’ Pat Milton and Jeff Pegues."
If he lied to the FBI all bets are off about what his future may be,

Is that the same Don Bessee that believed Measure W was going yo easily win?
Posted by: Paul Emery | 14 February 2017 at 08:49 PM
Ok, Flynn is gone. Basically, this story simply does not capture my interest. Some things do, other things do not.
What caught by interest a few days ago was every leftist publication (and to be redundant) as well as every MSM was foaming about Bannon and Kellyanne and anyone close to Trump. All of them are in the Alt-Left bedwetters' sights. Site after site, same story. Even Brad popped over yesterday to repeat the mantra, but included Maddog Mattis to the list. Yo Brad, his new beloved name is The Warrior Monk. Rather spiritual, is it not?
So, I see Flynn as the first to go under the latest stomping of feet, pounding the spoons in the highchair, and chanting "Kill the Beast, Kill the Beast." Pick 'em off one by one. Trump needs his wingmen to get it done. Much work to do and our President needs his team in place. So, Flynn is of interest, but not for the reason Paul is creaming his jeans over. Yo Paul, you got a few pearls on the corner of your mouth. Best wipe it with a napkin before heading out in public.
What concerns me is leaks that threaten our nation security, all for political gain. Any President should be able to talk with foreign leaders without having his phone bugged. Any and all Presidents. Put Sessions on it. Poor guy Sessions is stretched to the max cleaning up the corruption Obama put in place. This Swamp is huge. Draining it will bring all the knives out. It's being played out. Still, a slow news day.
Posted by: Bill Tozer | 14 February 2017 at 09:08 PM
Yeah slow news day Bill. Tomorrow will be a gusher with little things like the Trump Campaign being in constant contact with Russian intelligence during the campaign. This is unraveling at such an alarming rate that it is hard to keep up with. I was gonna take a couple days off from this blog but the incompetence and arrogance of Trump and the Trumpettes has me working overtime.
Posted by: Paul Emery | 14 February 2017 at 09:15 PM

I like growing flowers. It's kinda gay, but gives me great wonderment and awe at Creation.

Boy, you are getting cranky. That 9:29 pm of yours was pushing the envelop.
I was worried about you for the last few days as you were really getting more rummythan usual, but I never have seen you cranky. Very uncharacteristic of you, Mr. Emery. Strike that. You got real cranky when they were going to outlaw private parties with live music. Not the large private parties, just that gawd awful live music. Too bad this great area lacks good talent. Oh well. The most important thing to remember is that Trump is losing, and losing bigly. He's losing at all of him main campaign promises be it immigration or Obamacare. The mental illness he carries with him cannot tolerate that status in his mind. Ryan and McConnell hate him personally so they will bail when they see the Congress going blue. We are within weeks of that. So whether he is impeached or he quits within 2 years, doesn't really matter. Michael Pence who is a real conservative will be finishing out the first term, that much we know.
Posted by: rjohansonn | 14 February 2017 at 10:02 PM
No he is not losing. But the system alows the democrats to slow things down and golly after 20 days you would think he should have built the space program! The left and his detractors are cracking up. Either Trump is stupid they say or just not a politician or whatever dejour today. Schumer and the democrats are going to lose "big league" not biglee, and the R's will govern for a generation.

Garland was a very qualified judge and would be a competent high court justice.
The problem the GOP had with him was the same problem Dems had with Bork... The Senate always considers judicial philosophy... which is akin to political philosophy... and they have every right to do so. And Garland would have changed the balance of the court in virtually the same amount as Bork, in the opposite direction.
Reagan ended up nominating Kennedy instead of Bork... A moderate replacement for a retiring moderate justice. Obama missed an opportunity to play chess instead of checkers... had he nominated Gorsuch himself he would have repaired much of the Bork animosities and removedwhat may have been the winning margin of victory from Trump... voters who did not want HRC picking justices.
I think Garland might still make it to the high court, the perfect replacement for Ruth Bader Ginsbergwhich would move to move the same amount and direction as Bork had he been confirmed... but how could dems trash him without being transparently hardball partisan?

A lie is a false statement represented to be true; meaning you have to establish the facts, determine their point of view, their understanding of the facts and their state of mind at the time of the suspected lie.
That's often very hard to do to legal standards (Pacifica Radio has double standards you might agree with). Most "Progressives" have a hard time distinguishing lies from errors, or their delusions, as the case may be.

PaulE 1158am - Am not sure what you are attributing to me, especially since I don't know what "coordinating campaign material" means and would never have made such an ambiguous statement. You know me better than that.
But if any successful presidential candidate did/does use a foreign nation to illegally promote his candidacy, I would support his removal from office. We know that foreign leaders and officials have long given their opinions pro/con on other countries' candidates, so I wouldn't waste any hot air claiming that such endorsements are grounds for hyperventilation. Now comes the question - where is the threshold of illegality and who defines it. Chuck Schumer in Washington and you on RR don't qualify.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/02/15/trump-reportedly-kept-pence-in-dark-about-flynns-russian-phone-calls.html
So, as I understand it, the whole kerfuffle is that a Trump factotum, a few weeks before the inauguration of a new President, talked with a Russian diplomat about some potential policy matters. The inauguration occurs, and then a week later Trump found out that the underling talked with the Russians a few weeks before the swearing-in. Maybe I'm missing something here. It all seems so unimportant (and commonplace) that I suppose I'm missing the main point. If the whole thing is just about the 'Logan Act' (never charged, probably unconstitutional, regularly violated), then it all strikes me as pure political posturing.

George
Here is a Pense quote on campaign contact with the Russians. There are many more. Should Trump be held responsible for the quotes of his VP? :
On January 15, then-Vice President-elect Mike Pence went on Fox News and was asked by Chris Wallace whether there had been communication between the Trump campaign and Russian officials before the election.
“Of course not,” Pence replied. “Chris, this is all a distraction and it’s all part of a narrative to delegitimize the election and question the legitimacy of this presidency. The American people see right through it.”
Posted by: Paul Emery | 15 February 2017 at 01:03 PM
from the 'all over it' Fox News.
"President Trump was reportedly told six days into his presidency that his former national security adviser Michael Flynn misled the vice president about his phone calls with Russia, but did not tell his second-in-command."
Seems pretty clear to me. I do agree on Pence's 'all a distraction' quote. This is 100% politics and about 0% reality.
I keep wondering when the real arguments about policy will actually break out, this all reminds of the stupidity of the Obama birth certificate outrage. Both sides can froth about non-issues evidently.

In spite of the screaming snowflake class (that's you PE) the world moves forward and the DOW is still going up significantly. It closed over 20,600 which is a reflection of people betting their money on a positive future for the US economy, its the economy stupid I have heard said. ;-)

Mostly on he afternoon news program with Sheppard Smith.
Would Flynn be out of line if he talked policy with Russian intelligence before the campaign without instructions from Trump? For sure exact details of the conversation will eventually come out.
If Trumps campaign was in consort with Russian intelligence that would make Trump a prime candidate for blackmail.
Here's Smiths Fox report
"Fox News host Shep Smith harshly criticized President Donald Trump for hanging on to National Security Adviser Michael Flynn long after he became aware that Flynn had lied to Vice President Mike Pence.
Flynn tendered his resignation late Monday night, hours after the Washington Post reported that the former acting Attorney General Sally Yates said Flynn was a security risk due to blackmail concerns.
Addressing the fall-out, Smith told guest Andrew Napolitano that Trump appeared to dismiss the concerns until the media dug into the story and busted Flynn.
“They want this to be about trust, ” Smith explained. “When you find out he lied to the president of the United States, that’s where rubber meets the road. It does not meet the road when the Washington Post, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal all make it a front page story above the fold.
“Because, in this case, that’s what it took,” Smith continued. “It did not take the president, it took the headlines.”

So sad. They put all their eggs in one basket. They can't prove Trump campaign collusion with the Putin. Collusion. They can't prove collusion and they can't prove Moscow had any influence on the outcome of the election. So, we are now at the buzz word 'coordinated.' Too easy, too transparent.
I figure there is a reason the full transcripts of the US tapping the Russian Ambassador's phone and caputuring Flynn's plotting with the Rooskies had not been made public. Considering the 2016 NSA is chock full of Obama's operatives and are alive and well to this very day, you can bet your sweet petunias that it would have been released by now. No there there.
This is just a continuation of the recount and begging the electoral college voters to stop Trump. Once Trump gets settled in the office and starts rolling out his policies, the Left is doomed. Full frontal assualt to stop Trump now! Now or never. Yawn.
Well, give them an E for effort. Bless their little hearts. Boy, the shadow government really really wants conflict with the Rooskies. They are obsessed with it. Well, the shadow Obama government filled with Islamophiles really hate Flynn. He said the JV team is alive and well, directly contracting Barry's Sugar Frosted O's. Here is my Obama and the NSA went after Flynn.

Fishie 10:43-- good one fishie -- Is that all you have? The only problem with your stock in trade "hillary is a liar too" response is the, in case you missed it, trump is the person in the white house not hillary. trump is the liar in chief.. hillary is old news and most likely all the the alleged hillary lies, given how the righties do business, were alternate facts anyway.

Now they will go after Vice Admiral Robert Harward. That man liked the Shah of Iran, an unforgivable offense. Trump has surrounded himself with those who know the real threat.
This is Trump's War against the Deep State. The Democratic Party is currently impotent and a joke, so it is the Obama Deep State teaming up with the media to fight on. Add a couple of bend over and take it Neo-Cons and Chucky Boy, and the picture grows clearer. Boy, they sure went ape when Trump said Pocahontas was the face of the Democrat Party, but I digress.
The Deep State NSA forgets that we don't work for them, they work for the people. At least in theory. Bust their "America is Bad" chops, President Trump. Then stand on their cowardly throats. Beautiful day today, despite been another painfully slow news day. Oh well.

re RobertC 135pm - Not judging the merits of bringing up Hillary's notorious history of lying, but I do find it strange that liberals now talk about the past iniquities of their brethren and cistern(sic) as simply bygones to be ignored. These pages contain the entire record of the Obama years during which our leftwing friends could not shake themselves from ruing every word out Bush2's mouth as excuses for the lies of Team Obama. A little symmetry would be refreshing.
On another topic - I have to reach for the barf bag every time one of the media heads or politicians castigates Trump for pushing back against the Deep State's intelligence apparatus, characterizing his words as impugning the very people "who are out there putting their lives on the line for us." Trump has done no such thing - he has said nothing against the people in the field, a different breed, who do risk everything to gather this country's intelligence.
But he has taken to task the turkeys (i.e. 'intelligence analysts' like Snowden) who work in cloistered offices, answer to no one who is known or elected, and go home to a warm safe bed every night. It is these faceless people whose work and leaks support the agenda of the Deep State, and who may be violating every security law on the books to no one being the wiser. Where are the FISA warrants that allowed ANYONE to listen in to Flynn's (and now Team Trump's) communications?

Next time nominate a better candidate and we won't have to suffer the Tangerine Tornado in the White House.

Who gives a crap George? The past is just that, the past; water under the bridge, over and out. Do you really think bringing up supposed lies of the past justifies trump, the psychotic liar and his team of corporate goons, lying to the country again and again about almost every subject imaginable? Your "they lied too" rebuttal is fallacious and does not condone the current situation.
"These pages contain the entire record " of your interpretation of events spoon fed to the ideologically impaired by the right wing noise machine's bureau of alternate facts. It should be obvious by now, given how bad trump and co. are at lying, that the far right's entire rationale for their policies is based on alternate facts created ex post facto to cover their asses.

RobertC 220pm - I'm sorry to say you understood NONE of my 154pm - a condition I'm sad to report is endemic among you and yours. (I understand from other readers here that Exhibit A of this assertion is available at FUE's where NO ONE has detected my posts and the hundreds of comments covering the Flynn et al affair here. They hang on every word in RR and yet comprehend nothing.)
Had you understood, then it would have been clear that it was the leftwing readers and commenters who very much gave a "crap" about the past during Obama's years. I never brought up the "they lied too" argument, that was your fabrication.
And the referenced "entire record" of the Obama years was not my "interpretation of events spoon fed to the ideologically impaired", but instead the interpretations of the leftwing contributors in these comment streams.
I had no idea that the first paragraph of my 154pm was such a challenge, and do apologize that I was not able to say it well enough for you to understand.

More Rooskie connections and reasons for Trump to like them? XL pipeline steel produced by Canadian company with ties to Russia,
"One of President Donald Trump’s first actions in office was to sign an executive order on January 24 expediting the approval of the Keystone XL. Owned by TransCanada, this tar sands oil pipeline was halted by former President Barack Obama in November 2015. Trump signed another order on January 24, calling for steel for U.S. pipelines to be made in the U.S. to the “maximum extent possible,” and two days later TransCanada filed a new presidential permit application for Keystone XL with the U.S. Department of State.
Critics, such as John Kemp of Reuters, pounced on the caveat language in Trump’s steel order and noted that it appears “designed to preserve lots of wiggle-room.” In fact, a DeSmog investigation reveals that much of the steel for Keystone XL has already been manufactured and is sitting in a field in rural North Dakota.
DeSmog has uncovered that 40 percent of the steel created so far was manufactured in Canada by a subsidiary of Evraz, a company partly owned by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, who is a close ally of Putin and a Trump family friend. Evraz has also actively lobbied against provisions which would mandate that Keystone XL's steel be made in the U.S."
Posted by: BradC | 15 February 2017 at 02:41 PM
So the already manufactured pipe is in storage, what's your point? ;-)
Posted by: Don Bessee | 15 February 2017 at 02:46 PM
George
Flynn was only the presumed Security chief at the time of his now infamous phone calls to the Russian Ambassador. Why shouldn't the transcript of his conversation be released? Trump can straighten the whole thing out by demanding it be released. Why do you think he he doesn't do that? Do you think he had Trumps ok to make that call and say whatever he said?

That would still leave you woefully behind, but it's a start. We really are interested also in your opinions.
