More signs of our times. SESF Executive Director Russ Steele and I along with our brides attended a robotics competition last Sunday at the Folsom campus of Intel Corporation. One of the teams competing was from Nevada Union HS, and we were there to root for the home team. They did quite well, but I’ll let Russ fill you in on the details since he is preparing a piece on the event. SESF has been deeply involved in STEM education of our county’s youth. SESF writes and funds the annual TechTests and TechTestJrs merit exams, give seminars on taking tests, and run the TechMentor program for special students. But nationwide things are not looking all that good, since our K-12 school systems turn out overwhelming numbers of kids who can’t read, write, or reason (more here and H/T to a reader for this latest heads up).
The leftwing mobs protesting free speech on campuses are growing more brazen as witnessed at UC Berkeley yesterday. Now violence is becoming the norm with fires, rocks, and broken windows as the campus police stand by helplessly not certain whether to enforce the law or run and hide. One of my current books has been Der Führer (1944) by Konrad Heiden, a detailed history of the rise of Adolph Hitler and National Socialism in prewar Germany. Today’s headlines reflect mirror images of how our radical (or is it normal?) Left dispatches its ideological opponents similarly to how the SA brown shirts shut down opposition to the Nazis even before they were known as Nazis.
Today one of NPR’s daily hit pieces on Trump featured a Democrat senator opposing Judge Gorsuch for being "out of the mainstream" since he is not a supporter of Roe v Wade. Mainstream? Yes, as the litmus test the senator cited that 80% of Americans support RvW. Someone should inform the beltway sequestered politician that 99.9% of RvW supporters have no clue as to what that law actually provides for, and what factors comprise its deceptively named ‘women’s healthcare’ issue.
The second documents the abhorrent science behind the global climate change hysteria. RR has presented detailed analyses of the so-called global warming issue, among these being our lack of a workable atmospheric science upon which we can build reliable general circulation models (GCMs). The interviewed scientists take us through the latest in the development of climate data, the known science, and the dysfunctional GCMs which are used to create the catastrophe graphics to fuel the politics and policies of central planning and globalization. The documentary – ‘Doomsday called off’ - should be of special interest to the liberal bobbing heads who can do nothing more than interminably parrot ‘Consensus science! Consensus science! Consensus science! …, Aaaawkk!’ Spoiler alert: Besides the dreadful condition of the GCMs, you’ll learn that histrionics based on surface temperatures just won’t do. (for more, search RR with ‘global warming’)
[update] And this just in on how companies, especially the highly regulated ones, view employees as the cost they are, and then do everything they can to keep such costs flexible so that they can respond to the ups and downs of the marketplace. The solution increasingly adopted by firms is to hire contractors to fill needs which may not be permanent. 'The End of Employees' details this approach which is alarming to many workers of moderate and/or limited skill sets. All of this is of a piece (see the China report above) with factors that exacerbate our growing systemic unemployment.
[3feb17 update] ‘Replace ObamaCare, Don’t Rename It’ advises Phil Gramm, former senator and chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, because “trying to cure all the program’s ills will only make them worse – and the GOP will get the blame.” He also informs us that Obamacare added only 2.3M to the private insurance rolls, and those at a cost of $29,130 each. Why? Because the normal accretion (even after failed Hillarycare) to such rolls occurs after each recession without any help (interference?) from government. The main effort here is to repeal Obamacare’s impact on taxes, rationing, coercion, and economic stagnation. The GOP’s solution should have a more cost-efficient pre-exisitng conditions proviso, improve Americans’ ability to keep their insurance when they get sick or change jobs, and provide Medicaid block-grants to the states. “If they try to do more, they will be in danger of only changing the name of ObamaCare. They would then own a program that is (still) detrimental to freedom, fiscal responsibility, and economic growth.”
[5feb17 update] Readers informed me that some of the liberals’ local leading lights went into histrionics responding to my 4feb17 column ‘Calexit and the Great Divide’ in The Union (and here). It’s hard to tell whether these worthies are really smarter than their effluent indicates and just playing to their information under-loaded base, or whether they share in those deficits. The critiques underscored a gross misunderstanding of the US Constitution along with what I said in my column. The former is abundantly evident in these pages, and the latter is a perennially seminal characteristic of the progressive – ‘We know what you really meant.’ Armed with these, critics proceeded to fabricate their version of my column.
The most astounding aspect of their denials is that they all missed the Calexit gorilla in the room as the most prominent exemplar of the Great Divide. This movement, now attempting to gather over half million signatures, was the highlight of my column. And they totally missed it, apparently because the sheltered channels through which they are ‘informed’ never mentioned that little embarrassment to those globalists who have denied the now fully grown schism in the land.
Among the many things of which I was therein accused was the new charge that I am now also “craven” for “enjoying the benefits of American values while trying to deny those benefits to posterity.” You literally cannot make this stuff up, but they can; it is of a piece of the Left’s growing assault on the Trump presidency.

I am sure everyone is glad you enjoy you little polls PE, polls that have been so spectacularly wrong. The President is still the President and is swiftly and methodically dismantling everything 0 did in every agency. What you don't get is that its the view of the results that matter, not if they like his hair cut. By boycotting the committee votes on the cabinet nominees team lefty has shown how irrelevant they are to the process and how far team lefty has fallen from power in the last two cycles. Thank you that 0! ;-)
Posted by: Don Bessee | 02 February 2017 at 10:33 PM
Paul, the polls are greatly influenced by the news of the day and when you have journalists in an unprecedented jihad against the candidate they've been united against from the beginning, low poll numbers are nearly meaningless. There will be meaningful polls in 2018 and 2020. See you then.
In the meantime, Gorsuch is the center ring. This will be interesting and the main reason I was relieved by Trump's win. I repeat, having a renowned Jeffersonian textualist as the youngest SCOTUS nominee (and, hopefully, appointee) is a libertarian dream come true, especially when compared to the social justice warriors who have been the mainstay of Democratic Party presidents of late, and would have been HRC's legacy were it not for "Daddy", as Milo would say.
We live in interesting times.

Paul, let me answer for fish... Hillary would have been WORSE, and much of Trump to date greatly exceeds expectations. Time will tell.
The way you keep challenging people's libertarianism is a hoot... a lot like the old fable of blind men encountering an elephant and trying to categorize it by what they can feel. It's a spectrum and the party should be a big tent.
In any case, there probably hasn't been a libertarian President since the Whigs self destructed, that Trump isn't one doesn't bother me. Gary Johnson wasn't perfect, either.

What has Trump gotten us into that we weren't involved with before? Presnit Hope n Change was little more than Bushes third term but with all that racial healing.
The supreme court justices that he's going to force through....well you can thank Harry Reid for them! Merrick Garland....you guys were so sure that the Menopausal Avenger was going to win they wielded Garland as a threat.....get this guy now while you still have a chance to get someone reasonable. An admission that Hillarys picks were going to be so much more partisan that the Republicans had to move now! I'm interested to know just how Mitch McConnell mustered the fortitude to tell Obama to pound sand!
I'm not supportive of Trump so much as what his presence is revealing on the left. An absolute detachment from reality. A deep and pervasive mental illness denied for years but revealed now!
As an example, the fun in Berkeley the other night revealed you as anti free speech....much like (although less stridently) as the professor in the linked video.

The fuck do I care what Milo Yiannopoulos or Gavin McInnes says...it's nobodies business except those who come to hear him speak! Rest assured though other people are watching....and making decisions based on the lefts behavior.
And although I was "supportive" of Hillary in a Menckenesque sense early on....that the American people deserved to get it..."good and hard". I came around to Gregorys position, reinforced by the recent antics on the left, that a bellicose shrew beholden to Wall Street with all the charm and political skills of a middle management lifer in the DMV was a worse choice than the Tangerine Tornado!
I still think the whole thing is going to end in tears!

The press, led by the AP today is trying to blame the riots on Milo! Now Berkely.s Congresswoman is the only declared communist in the House and the Mayor there and the city council are all declared leftistas too. So like all liberals/communists, it is always someone else's fault. Milo was invited by the campus Republicans to come speak. Milo is a gay libertarian with a black mate. He doesn't hold back and PC is nowhere to be found in his speeches.
So the student democrats and their Professors (many seen on the roofs around the riot) decided to riot. They invited black mask covered faces to come help them riot. All paid for by lefty organizations. And they did their dirty deeds. Destruction of others property, denial of free speech and violence and beatings. My my, Americans have noticed. There will be a price for this. California is now run by extremist democrats. They own the state. These are their policies and it is not pretty.
Americans of good will and belief in our Constitution and its Bill of Rights must fight back and defeat these thugs and extremists. Words, words and speeches of sanity. In the old days we were the "Silent Majority". Not today. We need to speak up, turn out and don't let the democrats get away with this. Anu student and/or professor who took part in the riots should be booted and shunned. America is better than these thugs. So speak up and don't be afraid. Speak up.

.....not the first time Robert Reich just made things up Bill!
But Prof. Reich overlooked one minor detail: Fox News Channel’s first broadcast wasn’t until October 7, 1996.
The plan for FNC wasn’t even outlined until January of 1996, so what could explain such a patently false claim? Is the professor suggesting that even in 1994, Fox News’ imminence did in fact play a role in the political upheaval of that year? Or is this a moment where Fox Derangement Syndrome enters the realm of full-blown paranoia?

I see a flaw in their plan:
Rules for Radicals #12: “The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.” Never let the enemy score points because you’re caught without a solution to the problem."
Constructive alternative? Hmm, Nancy calling Bannon a "White Supremacist". Being absent without cause from Senate Committee nomination hearings, and offering no solutions or policies. Hmmm. Well, at least they got the mayhem and destruction down pat.
Ok, if they offer no solutions, go back a step:
Rules for Radicals #11: “If you push a negative hard enough, it will push through and become a positive.” Violence from the other side can win the public to your side because the public sympathizes with the underdog.
What violence from the other side? They are not taking the bait. Hmmm, looks like the public sympathizes with the underdog named Milo. Darn. This is not working as planned. Wrong underdog.
Best to go back a step.

No problem with Trump supporters exercising free speech at this high school.
"A group of high school seniors in Texas gave the Nazi salute and shouted “Hail Trump” during a class photograph, KPRC Channel 2 reports.
Photos of students at Houston’s Cypress Ranch High School surfaced on social media on Tuesday, showing a group of what appears to be mostly boys holding their hands out in the Nazi salute.
teachers at the school neglected to ask those making the salute to stop. “The just let them be nazi boys,” one text read.
“There were swastikas all over my desk in science,” another person texted."

@ 5:18 pm. Full disclosure. I know nothing about Silicon Valley. But I know people.
Aging in a young workforce.
I brought this up to a group of 30 something techies with young children recently. I asked why they did not work at Google. They laughed. Basically, you have to be single and work ungodly hours if you choose to work/ live on the campus. When I told them I read an article about a Google employee who lived in his car in the Google parking lot for a year to save up money for a house, they laughed, but were not surprised. "Cash rich and house poor" is the term they called it, a phrase they all used. Not a place to work if you have a life.
The ones I know all are trying to get into corporate and out of design. With little chance of advancement, the trick they said is to leave the company for 6 months to a year, then apply for a position higher up the ladder. Get rehired in Mergers and Acquisitions, heads of divisions, or whatever, but they know what your charts reveal: there is no future if they keep on doing what they are doing....with a family. Some gamble by joining a start-up and hoping to be bought out and cash out with early retirement. Uncertain future.

How can a Judge in Seattle and a Judge in the western district take control of the whole country on this EO banning terrorists from the country? When did a single Hudge get that kind of power? I think there may have to be a better explanation from the SCOTUS since they are this Judge's boss.
And perhaps we should allow the terrorists Trump was trying to keep out to move into that Judge's jurisdiction since it appears he could care less about the safety of the American people. Judicial tyranny was what the Founders were afraid of. Now we see why. Answer?

There are some laws passed in the 60's that conflict with the Founding and the 1950's law everyone is quoting. However, as Arizona found out under Obama, immigration falls under the Fed's job, not the states. But, we are getting ahead of ourselves. Exciting first two weeks, eh?

Todd, I do feel your pain. But, it's out of our hands. Who knows. This will be put on hold and taken off hold, and bounce back and forth like a ping pong ball for awhile. And this is the easy one, lol.
I don't think Trump or any President can put the hurts on UC Berekely's grants or do much about Sanctuary Cities. Saw a breakdown of Frisco. About a billion dollar budget (almost), 10% comes from Feds, and of that only about 16 million he can grab without creating headaches for him. Maybe 28 million. Also, some of these Federal dollars go for more cops and LE training, not to mention Block Grants to the States. More of a bully pulpit thing right now. I hope we all want limits on big government and any POTUS, even our POTUS. Nonetheless, Yankee Dollars do come with strings.
It is nice to see our friends on the dark side of the street finally waking from their slumber and notice that too much Executive Order stuff appears troubling at first glance. Shoe is on the other foot now.
I expect a firefight over the nominations for Education and EPA. They will fight like the dickens when we come on their home turf. Ear plug time. Devos is not 100% clear on Common Core, but she is crystal clear about school choice. Them are fighting words because the libs have had a monopoly on public education for decades. They have a lock on it. Whatever she does, anything will be an improvement. Same with the EPA.

Looks like George's column has all the usual suspects peeing their pants. And namecalling. The commies are pretty vocal these days.
Gregory, I thought the Federal Judges were part of a district and there were 14 or so?
Posted by: Todd Juvinall | 04 February 2017 at 01:01 PM
Todd, and your point is?
My understanding is the administration is free to appeal to (wait for it) the court of appeals, or to go straight to the Scotus (kennedy is the designated justice for that district). I'm not following it closely.
Yes, Federal judges have lots of say over federal law, including the constitution, but are slaves to prior rulings. Except the SCOTUS, there is always a higher court looking over their shoulder... the SCOTUS has the other branches looking over their shoulder.
It's messy and often slow, and IMO that's a good thing.
Posted by: Gregory | 04 February 2017 at 02:12 PM
It's not the first time some low level judge threw a wrench into the gears.
I remember some judge, a step above traffic court messed up the nation. I just can't remember what it was about. He or she's ruling was tossed at a higher level soon after.
Nope, I'm not one bit surprised this happened. If it wasn't this judge, it would have been another. LIBS go judge shopping all the time.
"O" got plenty of his EOs stopped in their tracks the same way. But it's funny that when "O" did pretty much the same thing, no one bitched. It's OK when LIBS do it.

"So called Judge"
We have a president who apparently does not believe in separation of powers.
Posted by: Paul Emery | 04 February 2017 at 04:30 PM
Trump is tweeting about the Seattle Federal Judge and the lamestream media and the demoncrats are going apoplectic. Why can't we say something about a Judge? They are not GODs. And why can't Trump speak up about them? SChecky Schumer says he will use this against Trump's candidate for the SCOTUS. And listening to the demobncrat Senators, they are certainly saying a lot about Gorsuch. And they are saying really nasty things. So how come a demoncrat Senator can say these things against a Judge, Gorsuch, and Trump can't? Just shows you all why the left is toast. They live by the "do as I say, not as I do" and the American people have finally had it with these hypocrites.
And these lefty protests are really something. Trump supporters are attacked at LAX and so we all see the left's "no free speech" again. Interviewers of these lefty goons shows they don't even know why they are there. They are being paid to protest. Very UNAmerican. So there.

A trumpet-"so called Judge"
That has the maturity of eight year old. I guess Doesn't Trump respect the Constitution and the Separation of Powers. vHe has no respect for anyone with a different opinion than his highness. Fatal character flaw.

Respect of the Constitution? Now that's a good one Paul. Remember? LIBS call it " List of negative liberties". LIBS hate the Constitution, and have tried to shred it, and have done a pretty good job of it.
Trump HAS the right, and authority. to do what he did. "O" did the same thing, yet NOW you bitch.
Posted by: Walt | 04 February 2017 at 06:04 PM
So PaulE no free speech allowed to complain about a judge? Seems the Congressional democrats according to you have no respect for the separation of powers. Look what they say about the President.

Walt's 6:22pm last night is of high interest. The Awan Brothers? Wonder if they are related to the Awan Brothers of Pakistan. Each paid 160k for a 60k/year job? Access to intelligence committee documents. House members mentioned are members of the DCCC. And Debbie Whatername's name mentioned again. Financial problems and criminal record associated with the yet to be accused? Hmmm.
Very interesting.

Walt@07:34
I am wondering if the Awan Brothers have any association with the DNC IT guy who was shot in the back while walking home. It looked more like an execution than a robbery gone bad as some claim, as he was shot at some distance in the back. It would be interesting to find out if he was part of the same IT community as the Awan Brothers.

That's Bill @ 8:18 am, but I will defer to Walt. He called the hacks as an inside job and only a foolish impatient fellow would go toe to toe with Walt. The highway is littered with the twisted remains of those who tried...and failed. I merely called it "multiple sources".
BREAKING NEWS!! Next up on the playlist is the quiet one, the hidden one, the Evil One. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the Brain Bigger Than Karl's, the Dark Lord behind the curtain, the Man Who Shall Not Be Named in Polite Company....the man who said "Darkness is Good", the one who Maureen Dowd wrote,
"where late into the night he plots his Manichaean schemes to blow up everything with trade wars, real wars and battles against the Islamic “caliphate.” He blithely sits at the center like Jabba the Hutt as the slapdash White House sews strife, chaos and cruelty, putting out executive orders restricting immigration and rolling back financial regulations on Wall Street —"
Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you Satan himself, the embodiment of all things Dark, who sees a red door and wants to paint it black.
