The Depth of Dumbth (updated 1apr17)

Evidence continues to pour in that the most recent generation of Americans – the so-called millennials – have turned out to be the dumbest in our history.  Specifically, their literacy, numeracy, and critical thinking skills hover above the barely adequate levels to conduct modern life according to diverse sources ranging from America’s employers to our National Center for Educational Statistics (more here)  What makes it worse is the fully functioning, concerted effort to deny any of this that is delivered daily by the nation’s progressive lamestream media piled on by our local leftwing lackeys.  The latter take it upon themselves to confuse the critiques of this state of national ignorance with an ignoble and gratuitous denigration of the ignorant, thereby firmly establishing their own membership in this cohort.  

The situation has gotten so bad that a currently popular form of easy entertainment are videos of reporters – e.g. Jesse Watters and Mark Dice - encountering people on sidewalks to engage them on topics ranging from current events, through popular history and geography, to common sense.  Watching the respondents either flail in their ignorance or unwittingly exhibit confidence where none is warranted illustrates the more formally published statistics (many reported here over the years).

A recent volume (pictured) by Mark Bauerlein – The Dumbest Generation – is packed with data from the now numerous studies and includes information about the organizations engaged in quantifying the extent of our endemic ‘dumbth’ (q.v.).

The problem caused by these people who don’t know the difference between a million and a billion, or the structure of our government, or the role of our Constitution, or …, is that way too many of them vote.  And they vote on topics about which they have neither the slightest clue nor even basic knowledge.  From our common past we can still hear Will Rogers’ paraphrasing Mark Twain - ‘It ain’t what you know that troubles me, it’s what you know that ain’t so.’ (more here)

This generation’s state of knowledge was most vividly illustrated during the ‘women’s marches’ after President Trump’s inauguration.  When asked why they were marching, their answers ranged from the incoherent to the inane.  When ‘diversity’, one of the millennials’ main memes, is brought up, their inability to define or discuss it surpasses high comedy.  The source of their malady is the education that they have been denied since their parents first enrolled them in their neighborhood public school.  From there through the halls of higher academia, their ability to think critically about diverse ideas was carefully expunged, and replaced by a memorized catalog of politically correct progressive notions which in the past were known as politicized slogans (the very embodiment of Orwell's 'newthink').

Classics professor Anthony Esolen of Providence College has been studying and writing about the whys and wherefores of today’s ‘diversitarians’.  For this revelatory work he has been mercilessly pilloried by the Left.  To get a sense of our educational decline I recommend his latest essay ‘Ut Plures Sint’ (May Be More) in which he focuses on the constricted (mis)understandings about the diversity of cultures – today a topic that so much exercises the progressive mind.

I offer this little update to further buttress RR’s contention that the damage to our national mind is both deep and done; there is no feasible way to fix it or fill the educational chasm.  This generation will embrace progressive policies wherever they are encountered, and cement them in the voting booth.  At this late stage of their development they have no choice; they are forced to consume information in the only way they have been taught – in small bite-sized, standalone pieces that describe a very simple and simplistic world that simply ain’t so.  The only solution remaining from this side of the long-passed tipping point is to wish us both ‘Vaya con Dios’, and work for a peaceful Great Divide.

[1apr17 update]  “Shaky numerical literacy can undermine our sense of issues like the federal budget that deal in millions and billions” says Jo Craven McGinty (here) as she adds to the evidence of our national dumbth.  She points out that the overwhelming percentage of Americans have no idea about how to deal with the very large and the very small numbers that are supposed to inform us about everything from government budgets, borrowings, and taxes to temperature and pollution levels impacting (or not) our environment.  Our innumerate citizenry continues making nationally impacting policies in the voting booths without a clue as to what is big, small, or significant.  Therefore demagoguery and pandering politicians abetted by their local echo chambers rule the day.

On a more hopeful note, the eleventh annual TechTest was administered today by the Nevada Joint Union High School District in the NUHS Science Lecture Hall.  Taking the four-hour merit scholarship exam were some of the county’s best and brightest students.  The exam attracts qualified students who plan to pursue STEM careers after completing their post-high school studies.  The exam is sponsored by the Sierra Economics and Science Foundation which also sponsors TechTestJr (completing its fourth year) to motivate fifth through eighth graders to take STEM qualifying classes in high school.  Scholarship monies and prizes are provided through the generous support of SESF donors and local high-tech businesses who have made possible awards totaling over $150,000.

As a sad footnote to these programs benefitting our youth, our local (now called) Alt-Left started politicizing and denigrating this scholarship program years ago solely on the basis that the test is written, sponsored, and administered by people some of whom hold conservative political views. (e.g. I write the TTs and give the seminars.)  The tests and related seminars are and have always been ideologically neutral, however that has not made any impact on people who have a history of looking at everything through correctly polished political lenses.  And if your politics don’t pass their muster, then they relentlessly demand that you withdraw from the public forum.  Only those approved should be visible in our community and allowed to contribute.  The portents of this dreadful worldview has long been dealt with in these pages.

Saw an interesting article that was looking at the 25% increase in pedestrian deaths 2010-15 while vehicle fatalities only went up 6%.

As George posted, and I agree, it may be too late to make substantial changes. A point of critical mass moving too far down the slope may well have already occurred. There simply isn't enough energy/mass on the side of enlightenment/rationalism to turn the tide.

Queering Engineering at Purdue

Having all but ruined humanities education, the Social Justice Warriors now turn to the STEM fields. Purdue University has hired Donna Riley as its new head of its School of Engineering Education. Here’s an excerpt from Prof. Riley’s biography page at Smith College, where she taught for 13 years:

My scholarship currently focuses on applying liberative pedagogies in engineering education, leveraging best practices from women’s studies and ethnic studies to engage students in creating a democratic classroom that encourages all voices. In a previous life, I used to hire engineers to do groundbreaking work in software validation and verification. The innovative tools these engineers developed were adopted as Air Force Standards. No, that useless hire at Perdue isn't in the engineering department, it's the engineering education department. Like the Mathematics Education departments at places like Stanford, they don't actually teach the subject, in this case engineering, they can be expected to teach prospective K-12 teachers how to teach "engineering" in all those STEM/STEAM schools across the country.

At the last Nevada County Fair, I ran across a math teacher who also should have known better. Said teacher was struggling badly in 8th grade algebra when they were a kid, but my first wife Teri, helping them, figured out they were badly deficient in basic skills and got the kid on the math competence track. Put away the calculator, do it pencil and paper, make the numbers dance yourself. Worked with them for hours. The kid turned into something of a star, got a degree from a CalState and is now teaching math at one of the county's Ed Orifice charter high schools.

Yes, dear friends, this local grad is teaching math at one of our bottom decile public charter high schools. The now all growed up kid told me flat out that math professors from Stanford made it clear at the Asilomar NCTM conference local math teachers attended recently that the Common Core discovery methods work better than the bad old ways... and it really went downhill when I told the table that Stanford math professors didn't go to that thing, it was more likely someone like the infamous Jo Boaler, Professor of Math Education who has no math degrees at all... Boaler got something of a BA in Psychology from some British college and has been a rock star amongst the Common Core crowd. Well known among the traditional education crowd for her landmark study that actually faked the desired results, figured out by some of my associates from the old Mathematically Correct group.

No, that all growed up kid now teaching math, who was adamant they knew the difference between a professor of math and a professor of math education, wasn't citing a math professor, the only Stanford professor listed in the Asilomar program really was Jo Boaler herself, and just as prominent in the program was the talk that followed Boaler's... by the very guy without any math degrees at all, Phil Daro, who poured Whole Math into the California Mathematics Framework he directed in 1992, and, despite that disaster, was hired in 2008 to be the *CHAIRMAN* of the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics drafting. Despite a small rebellion of stakeholders when their initial work product got an outside review in 2011, Daro remains one of three lead authors and remains a co-chair.

Boaler and Daro have been the Pied Pipers of failed math education pedagogies for years.

While my BS was Physics and my late wife Teri's BS was Math, it is never surprising to see our alma mater at #1 or #2 on any such list, in engineering or any other core subject. I've also read good things about Rose-Hulman the #1 on the usnews list for engineering at at colleges that do not grant PhDs in the subject and Mudd remains between Caltech and MIT for the percentage of alumni with earned doctorates.

I do hope whoever the president is when Scalia's best buddy on the court, Ginsburg, vacates her seat, nominates Garland a perfect choice for that confirmation.

Nevertheless Ms. Riley is moving from one engineering school rated 13th as compared to peers to another rated 55th compared to peers. Of course I read the US News ratings and knew exactly what was being compared. I also have now doubt Purdue knew exactly what they were getting.

Perhaps the real story behind the story is that Purdue would like to be as good eventually as Smith and recognizes that to do that they need to get more women to seriously consider engineering as a career. What a frigging crime that would be.

One engineering school to another. Here I thought she was moving from Smith College to Purdue University, and I keep remembering that relentlessly abusive attack of yours towards me and the college I attended... you made it clear your belief was that a mere engineering school just didn't teach anything unrelated to turning the engineering crank.

Those rankings are more likely due to those pesky standardized test scores of their incoming frosh... the SAT-M at Smith is about 50 points higher than at Purdue which is in the low 600's. Cal State 'Frisco is well below that, in the mid 500's. Pelline's lickspittles from the petite professoriate seem to think standardized tests are useless because of, hmm, let me dig out JoKe's rant yesterday, why not just go to the source:

Yes, gender equity over alles nowadays. I know women who chose math, science and engineering careers... do you? Withholding computer science instruction from boys who would benefit from it is not the path to gender equity in computer science, which is the path "Girls Who Code" chose to take... but then the dirty little secret from Silicon Valley is their gender equity problem is more that women didn't stick around... the frat boy culture didn't appeal as much to women or the guys who had a life.

Boys are graduating from high school at a lower rate than girls, women are earning more college degrees than men. At what point do we notice boys also need nurturing and not neutering?

Interesting that on my own turf I am identified simply as a "climate denier". First, I'm not sure that I or anyone else has a widely accepted definition of the appellation. Second, I have always advertised myself as a skeptic of preventable man-made global warming and presented extensive apologetics why that is so. But given my penchant for such semantics, that kind of categorization for most people may be just too complex, tedious, or else they believe I'm just playing with words. So be it. It saddens me that the Tech Test is being politicalized and trashed because of the haters. Sure, it is consistent and to be expected from the Dark Side as that is all they know how to do. Touching on Dr. Rebane's Apr. 1 @ 8:31pm, this is how is see it. Not too long ago, a reasonable person would have to tolerate something, but he/she did not have to condone that thing. Those days are gone. Now the Alt-Left demands so much more than mere tolerance. You must condone, support, and jump with both feet in or you are subhuma. Strike that. Worse than subhuman. Something berry berry bad...and evil, and Deplorable to the max. If you ain't all in, you are the enemy which must be silenced, terminated, and eliminated.....all the while being hated. Hate is an evil emotion and corrodes one's mind, emotions, and will. Terrible stuff. You must support their nonsense. It's a matter of life and death.

For example, I tolerate in the adult world a guy who wants to pee in the dolls' s bathroom at bars or Safeway, or stadiums...chicks can pee wheverever they please. So, Dr. Rebane, if there are some disagreements in the many fields of science because the proof is not in the pudding and all the debates are over hypotheses put forth AND you are not on the Enlightened flavor of the month club, you are the worse person ever. Reasonable reservations are not allowed. No middle ground. You are a knucnkledragger and thus, everything you do in every realm of your life is wrong.

As Hillary Hodge penned immediately following the election, there are people hiding (residing, gasp!) among us who voted for Trump and think "that" way. You know that way.
