[Trump is a hit in Davos despite his strong but stunningly accurate language calling out "shithole countries" which we here have abbreviated into a more decorous SHC. Now a correspondent informs that SHC should, perhaps, be made into the even more palatable TWN. TWN? why that's a "Turd-World Nation" of course. But now we can also examine the Europeans' reaction to Trump's next obvious truth that his administration will promote 'America First' policies, as if protesting Italy would put, say, France first. gjr]

BTW, if you look at that chart in the Axios link the Obama increase started almost 15% below the 0% line in March while Trump started at the 0% line, so in reality Obama’s increase was 50% or twice as ‘big’ as Trumps. I wonder if he has that chart on the wall of his sterile work free Oval Office

A quote:
"A momentum has started among conservative Evangelicals, and the Trump presidency has given renewed strength and support to a growing Christian resistance movement. The struggle no longer consists of Republican versus Democrat, left versus right, or conservative versus liberal but as…an even more critical and widely recognized area of conflict, nationalism versus globalism…evangelical resistance to the trendy but toxic globalist agenda has become an even greater area of focus for many believers."
That strikes me as exactly right and probably something I've harped on (mea culpa). The Christians are smart enough to sense something is up. Something larger than a smattering of Puritan ethics is at stake.
I can't speak for God, but it seems to me that the Logos is demanding Donald Trump.

Dan Walters on the upcoming SCOTUS case Janus v. an alphabet soup of an Illinois public employee union, and the recent amicus filing by Becerra,
"...unions are worried that overall membership would decline sharply – especially among lower-paid workers to whom dues are significant costs.
That would not only deprive unions of the fee money from non-members, which is small potatoes, but the much larger stream of revenue from members to support political operations, such as electing allies to office and lobbying for better benefits outside of the collective bargaining process.
By extension, it would also deprive California’s Democratic Party of the political funds it has used to acquire and maintain its dominance in the state."

Ignorant Trumpsters make headlines in Arizona
"Supporters of President Donald Trump used racist language against dark-skinned public servants while rallying against immigration, the Arizona Capitol Times reported Saturday.
Report Advertisement
“Supporters of President Donald Trump singled out dark-skinned lawmakers, legislative staffers and children at the Capitol on Jan. 25 as they protested congressional efforts to pass immigration reform, according to staffers of the Arizona Legislature and two Democratic legislators, AZ Capitol Times reported. “Waving large flags in support of Trump while standing between the House and Senate buildings, the protesters, who were also armed, asked just about anyone who crossed their path if they ‘support illegal immigration.’”
One dark-skinned Arizonian who was asked if he was in the country “illegally” was Rep. Eric Descheenie (D-Chinle).
Rep. Descheenie is a Navajo lawmaker.
“I’m indigenous to these lands,” Rep. Descheenie said. “My ancestors fought and died on these lands. I just told them, ‘Don’t ask me that question.’”

Found on Facebook. Author is Martin Webb, KVMR host on Energy Report and Cannabis Crusades. Enjoy.
Okay, folks. I'd like to chime in about this solar panel tariff thing. I'm seeing a LOT of anti-Trump social media sharing about this, and it is actually very much unwarranted.
As a 20-yr veteran of the solar industry, who owned and operated my own solar company for 12 of those years, and as a 13-yr veteran of hosting a monthly radio show called The Energy Report, I keep an EXTREMELY CLOSE EYE on these types of things, and have for a very long time. I've seen the ups and downs in solar from political interference, starting my career back when Bill Clinton was in office, and have been in the industry through multiple presidents and state governors, and understand the nuances of policy-making in regards to renewable energy and solar in particular.
I also, as a proud decline-to-state voter, would like to believe that when someone on the "right/conservative" side of things gets something totally wrong about a president, say Obama for example, that people close to them step up and correct the inaccurate lambasting, to tamp down the emotional hatred. I'd like to think the same is true for the "left/progressive" side. So I'm stepping in here to call bullshit on all this anti-Trump hysteria over this solar tariff and ask everyone to calm the f*ck down.
You wanna know the truth? Here's the scoop:
*
*
*
- This tariff did not just come out of nowhere. Trump did not just wake up Monday and decide to raise the price of panels, hoping to harm renewable energy and/or the solar industry. It was not even his idea. He was basically forced into it, and he actually could've made things worse, or announced a tariff 2 months ago, if he really wanted to be churlish about it.
*
*
*
- No, it is not a major blow to renewable energy. And no, Time, it is not even the "biggest blow he's dealt to the renewable energy industry."
*
*
*
- No, it will not "kill" the solar industry, as other hysterical media outlets have claimed. We have made it through much worse, and come out fine. We will continue to do fine, especially those of us that have been in the industry long enough and know how to prepare for the vagaries of having an industry tied so closely to political whims that shift and blow.
*
*
*
- The job loss is unknown. The solar industry associations ran some numbers to show the worst-case scary scenario, in order to stop the tariff process that was unfolding over the past year, but I believe it won't be as bad as they say.
*
*
*
- Yes, there will be solar projects that might have been on the cusp of economically panning out, that will not get built so soon, they may wait 4-5 years. However, for many, the economics of solar will still be fantastic. For example, just a few years ago, 51% of ALL the installed solar power in the entire country was located in just one utility company's territory: PG&E of Northern CA. That's where I do most of my work. Their prices are so freaking high, that even 15 years ago, when their rates were much lower and solar cost three times as much as today (it used to cost $9/W…now I sell systems for $3/W), that the economics even THEN made sense. Now that solar is so much cheaper and their rates have skyrocketed, even a tariff will not make it still a better choice…all of CA is like that, and CA is still the overwhelming leader in solar. We won't be affected that greatly, we'll just have a few less deals to close.
*
*
*
- The 30% tariff only applies to the wholesale cost of panels, and the panels are only part of the cost of installing solar. It's not a 30% increase on the overall price of going solar. The real net impact to consumers is a price increase of around 5-10% for your system installation…likely a single digit net cost increase. But wait…theres more...
*
*
*
- The 30% federal tax credit is still in place and that gets rid of 30% of any price hike, so a $1,000 increase in contract price, is a net increase of $700, since your tax credit will go up by $300. A higher price means a higher tax credit. A 10% increase in contract price, means a 7% net increase due to the tax credit.
*
*
*
- Most importantly, we all knew this was coming in the solar industry, because all of this started early last year, when two majority-foreign-owned solar panel manufacturers that had factories in the US, were going out of business. One is called Suniva, a China-backed manufacturer with a factory in GA that filed for bankruptcy last year, and the other is called SolarWorld, a German-owned manufacturer with a factory in OR, whose German parent company filed for insolvency last year as well. Good riddance if you ask me. If you ask the rest of the industry, they both filed for insolvency because of poor mgmt, bad business practices, questionable production issues, etc. If you have a choice of installing SolarWorld panels, and there are still local companies selling them, just SAY NO! Their OR factory is still limping along and hasn't completely closed…yet.
*
*
*
- When these two foreign-owned/foreign-backed companies went bankrupt last year, they decided to kick the rest of the industry in the balls as they went out the door, so they filed a very rare and unique trade case with a somewhat obscure US govt agency called the International Trade Commission (ITC), under a little known provision called Section 201. THAT started the whole process of where we are today. These two manufacturers claimed that the only reason they went out of business is because the price of solar panels was too cheap, and therefore the US govt should increase the price by adding a tariff to all panels that come into the US from outside our borders.
*
*
*
- Note: The ITC did an analysis and found that 95% of solar panels being installed in the US are imported, whether it's from Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia or wherever. So this would basically raise the price of virtually ALL panels in the US.
*
*
*
- After filing this rare trade case with the ITC, these two bankrupt companies triggered a very specific process that had to be followed by law, and then played out all last year:
*
*
*
- First, the ITC had to analyze the solar panel manufacturing market and decide if any harm was done to the US solar panel manufacturing industry as a result of non-US panel prices being so low. They didn't have to decide whether it was unfair or just part of the global market, or even decide why…it could just be market forces…it's cheaper to make panels elsewhere, so US factories closed, since no one wants to pay those made in the US prices. Everyone wants panels to be as cheap as possible, so overseas the factories went. It may not be unfair, it may just be business following the cheapest route. At any rate, we all knew that OF COURSE the ITC would be forced to conclude the the US solar panel manufacturing industry was harmed by low prices. There were multiple public hearings in DC about this all last summer, with both sides arguing their case…the entire solar industry on one side, arguing against tariffs, and these two bankrupt companies on the other side, begging for a price hike. (You didn't hear about that in the news, did you? This is probably all new news to you NOW, but it's been a year long process that had nothing to do with Trump and he had no involvement until now.)
*
*
*
- Once the ITC decided in Sept that yes, there was harm, then by law they were forced to come up with recommendations for how to "remedy the harm." The ITC is made up of 4 commissioners, some Rs and some Ds. They had more public hearings about what the remedies should be. Suniva and SolarWorld still argued for huge tariffs, bigger than what was announced this week.
*
*
*
- In Nov, after much anticipation industrywide, the ITC finally released their recommendations to the president. The 4 commissioners couldn't agree, but they all recommended lower tariffs than Suniva or SolarWorld. One R-commissioner said "add a govt-mandated 35% tariff price increase on all imported panels," while another D-commissioner recommended no blanket tariffs on all imports and instead adopt a quota system, where imported panels were tariff-free up until a certain amount of total imports was hit, and then once that point was reached, tariffs would kick in. The two remaining commissioners actually did agree on a plan together, one was an R and one was a D, so they jointly recommended a 30% price hike. These 3 different recomms were given to the president in Nov.
*
*
*
- Now here's where Trump comes in. Under the rules with this rare Section 201 ITC trade case, after the ITC gives their recomms to the president, he has sole authority to decide what to do…he can adopt one of the recomms, ignore all of them altogether and come up with something even higher and harsher, or he can ignore all the recomms and adopt something lesser. He could literally do whatever he wants. He has cart blanche to ignore everything they say and make up his own tariffs. Scary right? AND the Section 201 rules say he HAD until Jan 26th (this Friday) to decide. He's given a hard deadline that's out of his hands. It's then in his court with the clock ticking.
*
*
*
- So we've been on pins and needles for 2 1/2 months. We worried Trump would decide right away after he rec'd the Nov recomms from the ITC, and not wait until the last minute of the deadline. I mean, if he wanted to really screw solar, he should've done it months ago, and not waited at all. He could've announced tariffs in Nov, or Dec, or anytime on the past two weeks to get the pain started ASAP…but he HAD to decide by Friday. In the end, he waited almost as long as possible and didn't do the dick move and raise prices earlier.
*
*
*
- We also heard rumors he was going to ignore all recomms and decide on something even HARSHER…really threatening the price of solar. But in the end, he didn't. And he perfectly well could have. He could've just up and said 2 months ago: "I'm going to add a 50% price hike tariff!" No. And he didn't even adopt the harshest recomm from the R-commissioner (35% tariff). He adopted the middle ground, that was recommended jointly by an R and D pair of commissioners…30% tariff. And he waited until almost the last minute.
*
*
*
- So you see, he was forced to make a decision this week on this, as president, and he took the middle ground of recomms. He didn't ask for this. He didn't make it up out of thin air. Two shitty companies started the whole thing last year, and if he really wanted to screw us, he would've announced a worse tariff 2 months ago. Or a worse tariff on Monday. But he didn't.
*
*
*
So cut it out. Blame Suniva and SolarWorld. Trump was put in an awkward position. He's not killing the industry or RE. The tariffs go down 5% per year and end after 4 years, so next year they drop to a 25% tariff, then a 20% tariff, then a 15% tariff, then they disappear. I told you all to go solar already and stop waiting, but would you listen? Nooo! Note: some manufacturers are absorbing some or all of the tariff, so if you go SunPower for your home with the company I work for, CA Solar Electric Co, there is no price hike, and you get the best panels in the world, made by a CA-based US company with a factory in Mexico (a world-class factory that wins awards for cleanliness, water re-use, zero-waste, and good treatment of workers).
*
*
*
Most of the reporting on this is anti-Trump hyperbole. Trump didn't wake up and decide to mess with solar. This is the end of a year long process that we all knew was coming. Wow, can't believe I'm defending Trump. He's mostly been a policy disaster, but this isn't one of his. I'm glad he waited, it helped me give better pricing to a real estate office in Sacramento, and the Chicago Park Fire Dept, both of who were my last contracts before his announcement. So the truth needs to be heard, and everyone needs to adopt more integrity around this issue. Thanks for listening.
That's all I have.
Why the hell are you reading this far?

re: Saint Paul: "“I’m indigenous to these lands,” Rep. Descheenie said."
He might try telling that to the Hopi, but I honestly don't see the problem in asking a state legislator whether they are for or against national borders.
It tends to simplify matters when the argument breaks out.
It's as laughable as the concept of the Lakota springing forth from the ground in the area they now live rather than being a form of expansionist power in their day.

So my question stands....rude behavior of Arizonans notwithstanding does he favor illegal immigration and an uncontrolled border?

I can't say that it takes much work. You get a little bored at the KVMR news complex (or the spare bedroom), break out the ol' fifi from the dresser drawer and look at one of the outrage porn sites.
Share here. Everyone responds. The feed clogs up with BS. Wash, rinse, repeat.
If someone wanted to argue, I'd vastly prefer something involving healthcare or immigration law details, but there's so little intellectual horsepower on the ground from the Green Libertarians that I've given up hope on that.
In the meantime, check out the small civil war that is going on at Google. Three sides. A bunch of crazy SJW's, (probably) a few silent conservatives, and management that just wants everyone to shut up and go to work. No doubt there's some Milo, Vox Day, plus the odd, side-taking magazine article.

"The wrongful-death lawsuit filed in Portland on the second anniversary of Robert "LaVoy" Finicum's death seeks at least $5 million in damages for his widow and each of their 12 children. The United States is listed as a defendant, along with the FBI, Oregon State Police, Gov. Kate Brown and others."

Didn’t read Archie’s comment besides skimming a few random paragraphs. Seems to me the short answer is the Chicoms are dumping Chinese subsidized solar panels on our shores cheaper than it costs them to make. Unfair.
Trump slapped the Chicoms to protect American solar panel manufactures and American jobs. And it the Chinese make some panels in Mexico or Vietnam, those solar panels will met President Trump’s faceslap as well. It’s all because Trump supports domestic green jobs. He took great political risk and none of the Greenies nor loose lid Lefties didn’t even say, “Thank you Mr. President. That was awesome.”

“We are always told by advocates of open borders that the reason we have illegal immigration is because there is not enough legal immigration. Yet, Mexico, which is the largest source of illegal immigration, is also the largest source of legal immigration. More than twice as many green cards and citizenship papers are handed out to Mexican nationals every year as to immigrants from the second and third largest groups (China and India). And this trend has persisted for several decades. There is no room for complaint.”

Imagine what Mexico would be like if those tens of millions of unemployed had stayed home. And did I mention the reciprocity of Mexico's immigration laws?

Don’t forget to write home.
Brown, who served 24 years in Congress before her defeat in 2016, was sentenced last month for using about $800,000 meant for poor students to pay for Bahama vacations and a Beyoncé concert and to pad her own bank accounts.
“I was locked up with politicians — they have entitlement issues; they think they’re entitled to things, and people resent that,” he said. “They’re going to think she’s rich — she can claim she doesn’t have any money.”
Brown will wake at 6 a.m. on weekdays to wait in line for the bathroom and then for breakfast. Afterward, she will tidy her room and the small locker “that is her existence,” where she keeps all her possessions, said Levine of Los Angeles.
Brown likely will do clerical or janitorial work during her days at the prison camp, where she will be held with 391 other female inmates.
When they get high-profile inmates like her, they like to treat them like [expletive],” said Levine...... “Seriously, she’s got a rough road ahead of her.”

Ah just desserts. Stealing money earmarked for poor students is low. First, Michelle makes them eat crap at school, then Corrine takes their money. Makes me feel sorry for our youth.

Payback time for Trump to the Russians to keep their mouth shut. Can you believe this lame excuse
The Trump administration informed lawmakers Monday that new Russia sanctions called for in a bipartisan bill passed last year are not necessary yet because the measure is already "serving as a deterrent."
The announcement came as lawmakers in both parties nudged the administration to implement a sanctions legislation that passed overwhelmingly in July — with only five no votes in both the House and Senate. The sanctions bill requires the imposition of penalties by Monday against entities doing "significant" business with Moscow's defense and intelligence sectors, unless Congress is notified that prospective targets are "substantially reducing" that business.
later in the news piece:
"In addition to the sanctions on entities doing business with Moscow's defense and intelligence sectors, the sanctions law also calls for the administration to produce by Monday a list of oligarchs linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin and a report on the consequences of sanctioning Russia's sovereign debt. The sanctions law was crafted partially in response to Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
It remains unclear whether the administration has already released or plans to release the oligarchs or sovereign debt reports that were due Monday, both of which are likely to contain classified information. The State Department spokesperson added: "Further details are contained in a classified report we have submitted to Congress."

"For those of us who are not admirers of President Trump, it’s even more painful to see the Democratic opposition descend into the stupendous dishonesty of the Russian Collusion story. When the intelligentsia of the nation looses its ability to think — when it becomes a dis-intelligentsia — then there are no stewards of reality left. Trump is crazy enough, but the “resistance” is dragging the country into dangerous madness."

On a related note:
"The illegal immigration debate has come to a head once again. Congress remains at an impasse over a temporary spending bill that Senate Democrats refuse to support unless it includes a provision that would allow several hundred thousand illegal aliens to remain in the United States without fear of deportation. It’s a tiresome ploy by the Democrats, abetted by their allies in the media, using deceptive language to paint a false picture that blurs the distinction between legal and illegal, citizen and foreigner, justice and injustice."

1911 update
The CMP has been authorized to receive 8,000 1911 type pistols from the United States Army.
The 1911s have been received by the CMP. A complete inventory will be conducted over the course of this week. The pistols will then be securely stored until the Army-approved 1911 building and armory infrastructure is completed. That completion is anticipated to be approximately 60 days from now. Once the 1911 armory is completed, inspection, grading, repair, and ultimately test firing of the pistols will begin. (Please be aware that the CMP was led to believe that we were ready to move forward, but three weeks ago facility requirements were changed, and we are now fulfilling those requirements.)

PaulE 1010pm - I disagree vehemetly. Mexico's biggest, and most valuable from its own perspective, export to the US and elsewhere is its redundant people - those who would foment revolution and bring down the ruling class were they to stay home with no hope and nowhere to go. That is why Mexico promotes one-way open borders without which the country would collapse in short order with blood in the streets, and why it has such stringent immigration laws and how it deals with illegal aliens.
Posted by: George Rebane | 30 January 2018 at 08:36 AM
"Then you agree that drug pushers should be shot on sight?"
Now, now. That seems a bit harsh. After all, "We have only ourselves to blame for the commodity " and that would be the end users. Perhaps Saint Paul wants those people shot. I really can't tell.
If you don't want to shoot the drug users, and you don't want to make meth and heroin available at RIte-Aid for a small cost, you are pretty much left with only one moral choice. To make them difficult to make and distribute.
In the case of synthetic drugs, you have to manage supplies of the precursors. In the case of those that are grown (or made in Mexico), you can either occupy Mexico or you can build a wall.
A Wall isn't perfect of course, but vastly improving border security probably is the only thing that works. A tiny percentage of drug smuggling is done via airplanes or boats (look up the numbers, it barely registers in terms of the amount), so blocking the overland route is really the only answer. It's not 100% airtight, but then it doesn't need to be.

Tax reform.
Good idea. Take the capital coming home or resulting from the tax bill and invnest in opportunity zones (distressed, low income areas). The longer you keep your money invested in those distressed zones, the less capital gains you will have to pay. Drops to zero cap gains taxes if held for ten years.

Shooting pushers on sight? Well, it depends where, how, and some ifs. For example, if the shooting of pusher men or dope peddler happens in CA, it depends if a stolen gun was used. If the stolen gun has a value of $699 or less, then it is a misdemeanor. A ticket is written and you have to go to court eventually. No instant 3 hots and a cot. Lots of ifs.
There are some budding businesses forming that may show some promise. One is called Low Life Removal Service. Too early to tell how many jobs the sector will create. Green sprouts, if you will.
Sentiment is nothing new. From the wild 60’s...Easy Rider Stuff
“Well, now if I were president of this land
You know, I'd declare total war on the pusher man
I'd cut if he stands,
And I'd shoot him if he'd run
Yes, I'd kill him with my Bible
And my razor and my gun
God damn, the pusher
God damn, the pusher
I said God damn, God damn the pusher man”
