Just brush up on singing the "blues". You have had two years of practice.

It would be fun to see how all you worthies stack up in your House prognostications. One way is for each of you to contribute the four MAB distribution parameters for, say, the Democratic Party. Put down the min, max, and most likely number of seats they will have after the mid-terms. Also throw in how confident you are (0-100%) that the real number will be in the vicinity of your most likely estimate. I'll also contribute mine, do all the calcs, and publish the results right after the election. Then we'll see out of which end of our alimentary canals each of us has been talking. Of course, if you already know which end and don't want to embarrass yourself further, ignoring this challenge would be the best policy.

(For the techies, the link is to the post where I introduced readers to the continuous MAB probability distribution. In the House race case the random variable is discrete, so we'll use the discrete version of MAB to do the calcs. Obviously, the reader whose MAB yields the highest probability for the correct number of seats wins. But everyone else can then also see how well their estimates stack up.)

Quiet guys, let them think Blue Tidal Wave is a’coming. Shhhhhh. Finger on lips.
Five thirty eight has the R’s having a 13% chance of keeping the House. CNN had the genteric D vs R spread at 13 points. Politico ran an piece saying there are 208 House seats that a solid D or leaning D. Oh my, boogie man cometh, whatever shall I do. Alas, woe am I. Psst, Politico, it takes 218 seats to capture the House, ROFLMAO.

Walt is right. Whatever the Dems are selling, the people ain’t buying. There may be a Blue Wave, but watch out for that Red Tide.

Just remember that historically the House goes against the incumbent party during midterms. That combined with polls showing Democratic leanings that are solid and consistent points towards a Demo House. Senate will likely remain Repub. Here are some interesting details

Average losses for a president's party since World War II: 26 House seats and three to four Senate seats.

Average House losses when a president's approval rating is above 50 percent: 14 seats.

Average House losses when a president's approval rating is below 50 percent since 1970: 33 seats.

 Bill Tozer

Which reminds me....does anyone know what the Dems are selling this election cycle? Think their platform is rescind tax cuts, increase regulations, impeach Kavanaugh, abolish ICE, promote open borders and lawlessness, open the prison doors to let criminals loose on our streets, and what ever is in the that snake oil tonic. Did I leave anything out? Oh yeah. Mob rule and giving Hillary one more try at the brass ring.

Gregory

So Paul, just wondering... I assume you're enthusiastic about Audrey Denney's run against LaMalfa...

She claims to be for the 2nd Amendment but is on the record that she'd work to ban the sale of semi-automatic guns and thinks California's "gun safety" laws, perhaps the most stringent anti-gun laws in the country, can be passed nationally.

So, the question is... do you believe Denney is pro-2nd Amendment?

If so, do you also believe in Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny? Maybe the Great Pumpkin?

Walt

Ya Paul,, and the "historical polls" said Trump hand no chance of winning.
Funny thing about "history" is dead and gone. The days of LIBS "fixing" election day are over.

“Censorship always defeats its own purpose, for it creates, in the end, the kind of society that is incapable of exercising real discretion… In the long run it will create a generation incapable of appreciating the difference between independence of thought and subservience.” —Henry Steele Commager (1902-1998)

“We owe the American people to be there for them, for their financial security, respecting the dignity and worth of every person in our country, and if there is some collateral damage for some others who do not share our view, well, so be it, but it shouldn’t be our original purpose.” —House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)

LIBS say the wildest things! Is this jackass for real?
Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti President Donald Trump is “hostile” to Latinos and “working people in America.”

Garcetti said, “We have a hostile president to Latinos in general, to working people in America, been anti-middle class, anti-rules.”
He added, “They think a wall will keep people out when they don’t go to the root of the problem. This is similar to a lot of their policies, let’s get out of a nuclear treaty, let’s do something with North Korea, let’s weaken our alliances, let’s do things that take away our health care. But they don’t have any plans ever to get to root causes or replace what they’re against. That’s worrying. It’s not just an administration whose values are cruel, but it’s also an administration that is absolutely ineffective.”

Hmmmmmmm

Democratic hopes for a wave election that would carry them to a significant House majority have been tempered in recent weeks amid a shifting political landscape and a torrent of hard-hitting attack ads from Republicans.

The tightening, with just over two weeks left, reflects how President Donald Trump's rising approval rating and the polarizing fight over Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh appear to be boosting the party's candidates in a number of conservative and rural districts that have been considered up for grabs.

@ Gregory: Education in decline...

Anecdotal story. Just heard from a niece. Cal graduate in math. Went to Cornel for master’s degree. Worked on US segment of super collider. Been working for Cornell for about 5 years now doing research.
She is sick of going research and training researchers. Fed up. She says that everyone who is sent to her to be trained “do not know anything. Not a thing”. These folks all have master’s in math or physics. They have no knowledge, no work ethic, are worthless as teats on a FUE.
She was in Germany for 6 weeks. Goes to Germany a lot to do research. The equipment she needed from Cornell was not sent. She e-mailed the professors at Cornell every single day for 6 weeks straight requesting the equipment she was supposed be going the research with and never got one reply from the professors. Not one.

She is fed up with the grants that are money pits, full of waste, fraud, and abuse. She is fed up with the “researchers” that “know absolutely nothing” that she has to work with. She is changing course and is now going to get her doctorate in physics and leave the bureaucratic wasteland of grant funded research. Just confirming what you probably already suspected.

And cnn says -

Look closer at the CNN forecasts, however, and there are cautionary notes.
“The margin of error is wide enough that [Democrats] could end up with 203 seats, short of a majority, or 261 seats, well more than needed for a majority,” writes the network’s analyst Harry Enten about the race for the House. Enten’s Senate forecast has a similar caveat.

My kid when a freshman at Cal 11 years ago was asked by a math prof (multivariable calculus IIRC) why the class was doing so poorly, and caught himself, saying he was doing great so why would he know?

His class was the first to arrive with their entire K-12 years infected by whole/fuzzy/constructivist math programs, which were rolled out statewide when my son was in the 1st grade. Starting in the 2nd grade he was enrolled in the local St.Sensible.

Constructivist (aka NCTM) Math is also another name for Common Core Math, and for everyone who still thinks Common Core doesn't tell teachers how to teach it have never read the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice which is filled with links to the NCTM source material. Dog whistles for teachers attuned to discovery methods where the Socratic Method is the rule of the day, only without a Socrates guiding them. You're on your own, kids.

Of course, there's absolutely no reason you couldn't do this in California simply as an experiment. Crank up the state income tax rates to a level where those same people in CA get their 6 G's.

While you're at it, increase the state income tax rates to pay for Medicare-for-all. Just the health plan would likely triple the rates, but it's for the children.

Walt @ 4:11 pm

The Shasta Dam was designed to be 200 feet taller! We did not need the water at the time, so the taller extensions were left for the next generations to build. Now, we hear the sky is falling on just the proposal of making the Shasta Dam 20 feet taller...and the lawsuits are flying. A mere 20 feet would double the water available for human use in the Sacramento River watershed. But nooooo. 900 million acre feet would be nice with all the illegals coming in drinking up our water and flushing the brown stuff down the toilet.

Take our local neighbors, the small town of Foresthill. They have their reservoir with an 18 foot wall. They did not need the extra water when build, so they did not build a spillway. It would have cost 2 million bucks for the spillway to be built. Expensive, but doable. Now, it’s still about two million clamshells to have the spillway manufactured and put in place. But, nooo.
-Add one million for Eniromental Review.
-Add two million for environmental ligation.
-Add 6 million the Forest Service is asking to move a trail and a campground with a few campsites.
-Still two million to build the spillway on the 18 foot high dam.
Total cost for little Foresthill is 11 million. Not so doable.

Whether one talks about raising the Shasta Dam (as designed when constructed) or the little Foresthill Dam, it’s the same song and dance everywhere. The plan goes under review for years. Then it is sent up the ladder to another government agency where it is studied for years. Then it is sent off to another agency where it is studied and reviewed for years. By the time it is approved, everything has changed (environmental law, other laws, etc) and you are back where you started...at the step one, spending years on initial studies.

Trump is trying to streamline the process. Whether it is building homes or retrofitting dams, the entire processes need to be be streamlined in CA and everywhere. That is what Trump is trying to do. You can only go so far with Executive Orders.

When water flows, food grows. Try growing dope without water.

 Bill Tozer

Moi, dams continued. The reason Foresthill needs a spillway is because the CA regulations have reservoirs draw down to low levels of storage to send the aqua out to the Ocean. Bye-bye needed water. A spillway would let Foresthill (for example) increase storage for human use in growing communities as well as meeting mandates to release water to be sent out to sea.

Walt

Growing dope they might understand and take notice. Actual food, well not so much. It just magically shows up at the supermarket.

Don Bessee

Just as suspected -

New court filings document the extent to which the Obama administration used government power to target disfavored industries, and subsequently sought to avoid responsibility for its targeting program.

Choke Point was an initiative under which the Obama administration tried to shut down disfavored industries by removing their access to payment processing and other banking services, thereby cutting off their financial "oxygen." They did so by applying pressure to third-party banks through the FDIC and other federal financial regulators. Targeted businesses were almost all entirely legal, and included ammunition sales, online gambling, and payday loans.

Choke Point was terminated in August of 2017 by Attorney General Jeff Sessions just a few months after he took office. Sessions then labeled it a "misguided initiative" motivated by "political preferences," rather than by a respect for the rule of law.

1) The post What did the Kavanaugh Confirmation Really Confirm is gone, so I will post here.
With the luxury of hindsight, I realize the Kavanaugh Confirmation hearings were not about the House Dems or about even about Trump. It’s was about Chucky the Clown Schummer’s Boys against Mitch’s Boys. It was the Senate Dems punching wildly in the air the attacking the Establishment Republicans (the Bush people). It was about the Bush Republicans standing up on principle against the unhinged Democrat Socialist Party, show casing Dem Senate leadership and Dem Senators in particular.

The Confirmation hearings confirmed how sleazy and insane the Dem Senators are. Not one member of the Democrat Senate showed any vestiges of leadership or statesmanship. Once again, they looked like monkeys trying to hump a football. It gave the nation a look into how unsafe at any speed they are. Instead of hearing about Max Mad or Brain Freeze Peloski, we saw the Dem Senators in true form. No place to hide, nothing to offer.

2). Midterms. I am adverse to cite conventional wisdom in this time of The Reckoning, previous labeled by moi as the Convergence. With that disclaimer tossed out for all to see, Latino voters went 30% for Trump. More importantly, Latinos historically have low voter turnout as a group, something not accounted for in polling.
Better still, the 18-24 year old crowd have a historically low voter turnout of 13%, give or take. That low turnout of that particular age group is not accounted for in polling or measurements of how motivated and fired up the libs are.

Time will tell. :).

Walt

A question to you pilots. Just who does one contact to report suspicious aircraft behavior? Was looking around on that flightradar24 and saw a flight track that's way too bizarre.
A direct flight from China to just West of Stockton, just to do a 180 and return to Woodland , drop in alt. do another 180, just to head South again. Someone get dropped by parachute?(just a wildass guess)

 Bill Tozer

Walt. You tell me and we will both know. :). Back in the Cocaine Wars, the pilots would make a flight plan from down there to Altanta. Then they would turn around and fly to Miami. The Feds were looking at flights arriving in Miami coming in over the Ocean, not arriving from the north....like Altanta. Plane from Mainland China to outside Stockton then turn around and buzz Woodland? Whatever it is, it must be worth the expense and risk.

Got my ballot. Finally, finally went up to the County after things settled down after the primaries a few weeks ago and got it all straightened out. Why was my vote in 2016 not countered with reason listed as N/A? Why did I not receive a ballot for the primaries?

My 2016 ballot was counted. The State’s is so slow to update their data base and the County says my vote was counted, Slow? Like, it’s almost two years after 2016 and they still haven’t changed ged my balllot from not counted to counted?? Grandma is slow, but she is 94.
The reason I did not receive the last primary ballot is because so voter regeristration card the County sent was returned. Yes, they had the right name and address and the right me. The nice young man pushed a button and turned me from invalid to valid. Told ya the Russians were messing with my mail. ;)

So, the Feds (USPS) screwed up, the State screwed up, and that screwed the County up. State says one thing, County says another, and of course we got the full force of the US Government involved. And to think folk actually vote fo bigger government?

The libs never connect the dots. They vote for years for bigger and bigger local, State, and Federal government, decade after decade. Then when they can’t handle the Santuary Poop City By the Bay, they flee up here with their failed notions. They love it here, except for the voters. Gotta change that. So, they come here and want all Lib all the time without realizing what they voted for years in the City of Piles of Hyperdemic Needles is reason they are escaping for their lives from the shithole of which they created. They wrecked that place and cannot grasp the absolute truth that their solutions were the problem all along. Mercy.

Education, diversity, and the dumbing down of America.

Most Americans might be shocked to discover that, a little over a century ago, 99% of U.S. students were literate. And they were literate until the Education Establishment abolished phonics and made children identify sight words.

This dumbing down was no accident. “If professors of education could justify claiming that non-reading is reading, then they could use Whole Word to make children into functional illiterates,” explains columnist Bruce Deitrick Price. “If they could claim that garbled, nearly useless arithmetic is as good as real arithmetic, they could make kids learn Common Core Math. If they could create bogus research to prove that Constructivism is a superior way to teach content, they could make sure everyone knew almost nothing.”

And if everyone knows almost nothing, the “fundamental transformation” of America is more easily attained.

If SCOTUS eliminates discrimination at the college level, the American Left would be forced to confront this contemptible dynamic — and the politics that drive it — where it matters most. “Back in the 1940s, before the vast expansion of the welfare state and the ideology of victimhood used to justify it, there was no such gap on test scores between black schools in Harlem and white, working class schools on New York’s lower east side,” Thomas Sowell explained in 2013.

Looks like you're losing the battle on you're only cause. what do you plan to do next?

"Roughly two-thirds of Americans support legalizing marijuana, marking a record-high approval rate, according to a Gallup poll released Monday.

Sixty-six percent of survey respondents support legalizing weed ― a stance more and more Americans have taken this stance since 2000, when 31 percent endorsed legalization.

The survey found that support for legalization among Americans 55 and older had also increased, jumping from 50 percent to 59 percent since last year. Support across the East, West, South and Midwest regions is now about equal."

Uh,,,,,, remember Muller's incitement of Russians? Can you say "publicity stunt"? The guys want their day in court!! Muller still doesn't want to give it to them. Remember? ( Muller didn't plan on the Russians claiming innocent)
The Judge is siding with the Ruskies " you filed the indictment,, now prove it.)
"Judges in Virginia and Washington have the special counsel reeling.
Well sure, we filed an indictment. And yeah, we took a victory lap in the big bells-n-whistles Main Justice press conference. But that doesn’t mean we, like, intended to have a trial . . .

That seems to be the Justice Department’s position on its mid-February publicity stunt, the indictment of 13 Russians and three Russian businesses for interfering in the 2016 election."

It only gets worse for Muller after that.

C'est la vie. It isn't like the local marijuana biz would survive a year or two of legalization. Commercial farmers would take over and that would be that. You might see a bit of boutique growing just like you currently have the odd brewpub and home distillery. It's important for the locals to keep it illegal, so I would hope they are spending a bit of money lobbying for that.

Meanwhile, good news. The Blue Mob has reinforcements on the way. As expected, the news guys are cranking up the pics of distressed children and avoiding the mass of dudes.

Of course, Obama (who, typically, did nothing) was Russia's deadly enemy and Trump is their good friend.

I wish that the Blue Mob got their story straight.

Walt

And what LIB news id saying from last week.
https://www.politico.com/story/2018/10/19/mueller-investigation-findings-914754
"President Donald Trump's critics have spent the past 17 months anticipating what some expect will be among the most thrilling events of their lives: special counsel Robert Mueller’s final report on Russian 2016 election interference.

They may be in for a disappointment.

That’s the word POLITICO got from defense lawyers working on the Russia probe and more than 15 former government officials with investigation experience spanning Watergate to the 2016 election case. The public, they say, shouldn’t expect a comprehensive and presidency-wrecking account of Kremlin meddling and alleged obstruction of justice by Trump — not to mention an explanation of the myriad subplots that have bedeviled lawmakers, journalists and amateur Mueller sleuths.

So start drinking early after election night... Win or lose.. You still lose.

The FUE (Jeff Pelline) has lost his noggin. He did a trashing of George Boardman and then has been the only commenter on the article. On an on he goes! What a hoot. The man is podunk.

Don Bessee

Well I am not surprised -

It's going to be a letdown. Not only is it likely that the final report will not reveal that the president has been a KGB agent since the late '80s, as at least one mainstream liberal columnist fantasized. It is also possible that it will never even be released to the public, at least not in full. Unless they are granted permission to review them under various conditions that will be imposed by the Department of Justice, not even members of Congress will be able to read Mueller's findings. For reasons that have as much to do with Mueller's own personality and style as they do with the sensitive nature of the material, the text itself is unlikely to be the sweeping anti-Trump manifesto that the president's fiercest liberal critics are longing for. There is every reason to believe that it will be a straightforward, minimally expansive document that does not volunteer information that is not absolutely relevant to the main findings.

The best hope for Mueller's cheerleaders was not that games of connect-the-dots would implicate Trump in a treasonous plot to sell the White House to Moscow but that the loose-lipped president would trap himself in a lie, perhaps meaningless in itself, about some detail or other that would open him to a charge of perjury. This would not have proved that collusion took place — if anything it would go a long way towards vindicating the president's own "witch hunt" narrative — but it would have satisfied the critics, who just want to see the president charged with a crime. Unfortunately, Rudy Giuliani and the rest of Trump's legal team made sure that this was never going to happen. Every question has been put to the president in writing and answered with the assistance of dozens of professionals with longer attention spans and a firmer grasp of capitalization and punctuation.

And they don't get the 50K if the baby mama starts making too much money. And just how many kids that benefit from this will be living comfortably in a situation that doesn't show on the IRS filings? A shit load, I'll bet. And it will end up being run just like SS and after 18 years when the bill comes due - oops! Uh - I think we done spent it already.
Then there's the predatory lending that will leech onto poor kids around age 16 or 17. Pssst, hey kid - why wait for that free govt moolah when we can give it to you now?

“And this caravan is a portent of things to come......

Unwanted mass migration is the issue of our time, as there is no foreseeable end to it before it alters America irremediably.

As these migrants are almost all poor, not highly skilled, and do not speak English, most will join that segment of our population that pays no income taxes but qualifies for social welfare benefits like food stamps, medical care and free education in our public schools.

They are thus a net drain upon the resources of a nation that is already, at full employment, running a deficit of $779 billion a year.“

The Left has no tools to deal with the Counterrevolutionaries, save authoritarian illiberal methods. Ok, this link calls it the counter culture, I call it the counter revolution.

“The open-mindedness and optimism of the ‘60s have given way to a progressive establishment equally as authoritarian, perhaps even more so, than the system the decade attempted to overthrow.

The movement—much to the chagrin of many of the idealistic baby boomers who set it in motion—has grown old, ornery, and hellbent on maintaining its twisted orthodoxy, so much that it is openly abandoning its most basic ideals, such as individual liberty and skepticism of authority. Yet these ideals are still meaningful to modern-day conservatives and libertarians.

From universities to Hollywood to Silicon Valley, today’s twisted brand of fanatical progressivism permeates nearly every facet of American life. The ‘60s have, in many ways, produced exactly what the decade so despised. Nowhere is this horrifying evolution more obvious than in higher education.

The “turn on, tune in, drop out” movement ironically did nothing of the sort. Rather, they were the moth to academia’s flame as beatniks and burnouts seized control of America’s once-great educational institutions, saturating them with a singular political philosophy and sowing the seeds of a liberalism that would grow unrecognizable in a matter of decades.

Far out, man.

Expanding on the College Fix theme

Today’s feminists? Paglia believes the current generation of women has been tainted by an education system that “tried to make everyone feel good,” and social media “where people feel they have so many 'friends’ and they want a sense that reality is comforting them and cushioning them and so on.” She notes that when she went to college in the mid ‘60s she and her fellow feminists were willing to “risk rape” rather than maintain a system whereby college administrators acted “in loco parentis” for women, while male students were treated as adults.

By contrast, today’s women are “easily upset,” even as they remain unaware of the “barbarities of human history,” and she contends this lack of historical perspective gives them “no sense of the special privileges they enjoy.”.....

In a 2017 interview, American Enterprise Institute scholar Christina Hoff Sommers coined the most apt description of women like Brown and their fatuous assumptions that all women are fragile and easily traumatized: “fainting couch feminism.”

Indeed. Ground we have covered before, but a brief summation of the catalyst of the ever dangerous increasing violent Blue Mob plague on our nation’s landscape:

“I would say now 80 percent of the events that happen on campus are hoaxes or pranks,” Laird Wilcox, author of the book “Crying Wolf: Hate Crime Hoaxes in America,” told Fox News. “It’s a place where consciousness of discrimination, sexism, and homophobia is at a peak, and when there’s nothing happening, and they need something to happen, they can make it happen.”

“This makes it even worse when crimes really do take place.

“We must consider what all of this means for American society, that those who attend our elite universities are so saturated with the victimhood ideology that it seems better to create stories of oppression to get attention rather than strive for excellence or individual accomplishment.

That seems a good bet to me.

To some extent, I think I'd enjoy a +1 Dem advantage or +1 Rep advantage, just for the fireworks potential. All results will be interesting given that a Republican holding of the House will result in mobs nationwide while a Democratic takeover will see a bunch of ginned up 'investigations', grandstandings, and hullaballoo. No doubt the House staffers have a stack of Things that Trump might have said in the 1980's or a need to see his tax returns in order to find a flaw in the deductions on some hotel...all important matters for the running of the country. There's hardly anything better than Maxine Watters pounding the podium on someone else's sketchy business deal.

The other one I'm looking forward to (although I wish her no ill will) is the replacement of Ginsburg. No doubt there's a whole floor in Maryland somewhere doing oppo research on Amy Barrett, inventing facts if need be. It might be enough to turn back the clock and declare her to be a Papist.

Good short read
:
Why Cultural Marxism Seeks to Control Culture

The experience of World War I and its aftermath showed that the Marxist concept of the "proletariat" as a revolutionary force was an illusion. At the example of the Soviet Union, one could also see that socialism could not function without a dictatorship. These considerations brought the leading Marxist thinkers to the conclusion that a different strategy would be required to establish socialism. Communist authors spread the insight that the socialist dictatorship must come in disguise. Before socialism can succeed, the existing culture must change. Control of the culture must precede political control.

“I wish her no ill will”. Neither do I. Just shows how far we have sunk since Ginsberg’s Confirmation. Everybody knew she was a ACLU lawyer and she was treated respectfully and sailed through. She was qualified. And she jumped into politics when she said she would move to New Zealand if Trump won and how awful Trump is....without the Leftinistas raising the specter of the “politicization of SCOTUS”, lol.

Then there was Sonia Sotomayor who was something like 0-9 arguing the government’s case before SCOTUS. Sailed through the conformation. Qualified. Kagan did not have much courtroom experience, still deemed qualified. Treated more than fairly and with respect.

Ginsberg has so many people already lined up and signed up to donate their organs to her if needed....while they are still alive. Here Ruth, take my kidney or whatever you need. Just don’t die! Pump her up with whatever that stuff they shot Hillary up with to keep her vertical. All in all, I wish her (Ruth) no ill will....but I ain’t going to give her my liver.

Oh course we believe everything Trump says. That’s what makes soooo very Deplorable. Not only that, we are freeloaders kicking back living the dream with all that free rent in your mind full of mush. Yes, we are that important! The proof is in your pudding. Big hugs and kisses. Man, old white priviledged liberals certainly get onrey when somebody poops in their oatmeal.

Trump blows the whistle on the Russians cheating on nukes and missle stuff and tears up the deal. Proof positive he is a Putin puppet.

Hmmm. Helpful hint # 208: I would not speak too loudly about being a great role model for our youth, if I were you. The schools here wouldn’t let you near our kids teaching photography once they discovered what a great role model for our youth you turned out to be. Just saying.

 Bill Tozer

Merrick, was there anything else you need to get off your chest this fine morning besides the usual? Think you need to come up with something new besides the usual.
