George Rebane
We’re watching the various channels report the returns. And the directors and producers of their election night shows insist on putting on talking heads and politicians from all over the country who not only have no clue which way things are trending, but also no firm ideas on which way things will turn out given the up-to-the-minute data feeds. Why put these know-nothings on the air to tell us their long-winded ‘on this hand, but on the other hand’ information-free interviews. We don’t need to hear such ignorance (technical use of term) and/or ambivalence from invited talking heads; the program anchors can handle such 50-50 outcome monologues all by themselves, and they can do it more efficiently with backup data than the people on their panels or the senator from some state who will amble on in ambiguity.
So here’s the drill. Ask the prospective person to be put on the air whether they have any firm convictions about which way this or that race will turn out given the data up to now. If the sumbich says he hasn’t got a clue, then don’t put him on the air to waste the viewers’ time. In short, if you have some firm position on an outcome that you can defend, then welcome and speak your piece – else we’ll get back to you when you’ve got something to tell us other than your long-winded ‘I don’t know’. How come none of those stellar journalistic professionals putting these ‘election headquarters’ on the air know how to do this???
Oh for goodness sake, George. Put another log on the fire, pour yourself an adult libation, turn off the television, lean back in your big easy chair, close your eyes, and dream sweet dreams of elephant liberty in the promised land.

George, We just turn off the sound and look at the graphics. Why waste mental energy listening to know nothing talking heads.

We were watching ABC News election coverage and, when they showed a bunch of House seats in Florida being held by the GOP they were saying, with a touch of resignation, that if there is to be a blue wave they'll have to win some seats.
Right now we're watching our current streaming binge series and I'm getting election updates via the net.
There ain't no blue wave yet...

Fox just call Dems will control the House and polls are not closed on West Coast yet as if that would make a difference. But, it might be a common courtesy to wait for the polls to close.

Senator Romney has taken the courtesy to wait till 8 to declare victory, as well as a few R Mia Love in a tight one. Wonder if Romney will push for Mike Lee on SCOTUS when Ruthy is out of quarters for her parking meter and her time has expired.

Tricky McDickie... or is is young Master Pelline?
The House will have a majority of about 10... hee hee. Pelosi will have a hard time getting any legislation passed and signed. Whoever is the GOP nominee in 2020 (I'd not bet against Trump) will have a do-nothing Congress as a foil.
There'll be maybe a 55/45 Senate. With no requirement for a cloture of 60 for judicial nominations or cabinet posts. the GOP will have a field day. Packing the lower and higher Federal courts... no more "living constitution"... the Constitution will be in rigor mortis as was intended by the authors.

We have news for the Proggys. Investigate all ya' like.
You will get a dose of your own medicine, when we had the House and you the Senate. The House has no teeth. No judicial power.
So you have an ankle bitter irritant. And,,,, NOT enough votes to even try to impeach.
OH the gridlock to come. What will they do? stop spending money? LOL!! That's not in a Proggy's DNA.

Blue ripple nationally -
As a recent analysis of historical trends in midterm elections noted: “Over the past 28 midterm elections since 1906, the president’s party lost about 30 House seats and 4 Senate seats on average.”
President Donald Trump’s Republican Party was projected to lose between 25 and 35 seats as of 1:00 a.m. EST on Wednesday — right around the historical average. Moreover, Trump and the GOP were projected to gain at least four seats in the Senate — defying history.

Nate Silver called it right. Dem house, Repub Senate. No surprises. Nevada County turns solid blue with second election cycle voting mostly Dem on state and Fed races. Endorsement of Lt Smethers was not effective.

Sheriff Moon was a republican until she announce and changed to DTS. LaMalfa and McClintock still there. California a lost cause. Hell the people killed 6!
Posted by: Todd Juvinall | 07 November 2018 at 07:42 AM
Paul. It’s not what we hoped but it is definitely a win for Trump. The was likely to go Democrat with an average gain of seats usually around 34. So democrats performed as historically indicated. Average. Trump on the other hand has likely a four or five seat majority in the senate and governors in Florida, Iowa, New Hampshire, and Ohio. What do these states have in common? Needed to win the presidency. Also judges matter. Not a single democrat senator that voted against Kavanaugh survived (so far). I am hopeful that Democrats and Republicans can work together in the house to pass some bipartisan bills. The next two years will be interesting, but with republican governors in key states, Trump has the inside track in 2020.
Congratulations to Shannan on sheriff! She is going to be great!

"I am hopeful that Democrats and Republicans can work together in the house to pass some bipartisan bills"
Do you mean like the republicans DIDN'T do? Now the story is "let's be bipartisan", how quaint.
In case you don't get it Todd, the sheriff's office is non-partisan. The county republicans have turned local non-partisan races into us vs. them situations. Not only sad, but bad. Hysteria driven republican national politics have no place in local elections. I would say the local republican party endorsement of Smethers hurt more than it helped. On the local level, the pubbers got their asses handed to them. You should be proud because you probably had a lot to do with that. Your insane extremist rants probably pushed a lot of purple people into the blue zone. Times they are a changing'. What ever happened to that red wave you predicted any way?

lol. Dream on.
My guess is that you'll see a more extreme version of the last two years. It isn't like Trump had the House in his pocket before, and from here on they'll vote in lockstep against anything he deems reasonable.
. Executive orders and changes in regulations rather than legislation
. Stuff the courts
. The House will be purely concerned with important Trump investigations and legal maneuvering. Endless impeachment talk. A combination of the incompetent (Waters, running the Financial Services Comm!!) and the crazy (Ocasio-Cortez).
. Lots and lots of youtube moments
It should be hilarious. Once the Red Mob riots die down after losing the House, it'll all be on slow boil from here on.

Midterms. Well, there is something for everybody. Straight out of the gate last night, the Trump’s tax returns where at the forefront, lol. Boy, that’s a winner. Guess that’s all the Dems got to offer. Tax returns? Think Trump was smart to say nice things about Nancy this morning. Nothing better than to showcase Nancy Pelosi and Mad Max as the face of the Democratic Party for the next two years. Mana from heaven.
Takeaways: Not unprecedented, but rare. R’s picked up Senate seats in the first midterm of a sitting President (R). Almost historic, considering the wipeout of D’s In Obama’s first midterms.
The fakenews were spouting the reason their favorite media superstars in Florida and Georgia lost was because of racism. Even Obama, Ophrey, and Hogg could not get FL and Georgia over the top. Obama does not have coattails, but never really did. Moderate R’s in New England lost for being RHINOs. Where do RHINO’s go to die?? A: MSNBC. :). Not a good day for William Kystol and gang.
Locally, I will wait to see the final numbers before declaring Nevada County solid blue. In a polarized country, 56% is considered a landslide nowadays. 2-3% is not solid, IMHO. Statewide, I was surprised the Dems did not flip more seats in the House. They expected 10....not sure if they reached that obtainable goal. Was surprised that Governor’s race in CA was not 70-30%. Again, gotta wait for the final numbers.
Yes, something for everybody to pick and choose. My biggest takeaway was how Trump picked up the R Party that resisted him and carried them across the finish line. At 72 years old, I find his energy and sheer determination awesome.
There are 100 bills already passed by the House that are sitting in the Senate. No longer held hostage by Collins and Lisa Murkowski or Flake, the Senate can get things done while the House remains in the resist and obstruct unhinged mode.
On a personal note, I had to smile that Taylor Swift did not move the needle one millimeter in Kentucky, as well as all those millions upon millions wasted in Texas by outside money from the usual suspects. But, that’s just me.

Nevada County is a solid blue County having voted mostly Democratic for the second straight election. the Repubs don't hesitiate to brand States as Red based on slim victories-Florida for example. This year Nevada County voted for:
Gavin Newsom Governor
ELENI KOUNALAKIS Lt Goveror
Alex Padilla Secretary of State
Betty Yee Controller
Fiona Ma Treasurer
XAVIER BECERRA Attorney General
Audrey Denny House
Jessica Morse House
Shannon Moon Sheriff -The Repubs endorsed her opponent Bill Smithers

Here are a few observations from the center stripe:
--San Francisco values indeed! We have elected a lesbian sheriff and a lesbian was the top vote getter in the race for Grass Valley City Council. Where's my rainbow flag?
--Smethers lost because the Republicans couldn't unite on a candidate. The law-and-order GOP establishment--the people who will pay good money to attend one of Doug LaMalfa's rare personal appearances at the Alta Sierra Country Club--backed Smethers while the Penn Valley rednecks backed Moon. We know who the druggies voted for, hee, hee, hee.
--Bessee, what are we going to do now? First they legalize pot, and now we won't have a constitutional sheriff. Should I expect anarchy in the streets?
--Steele, what happened to all of those Republicans who were going to vote for de Leon to punish Feinstein for her conduct during the Kavanaugh hearings? I guess they couldn't be bothered.
--The Republican strategy of trying to demonize a 76-year-old grandmother didn't work. And to think they could have run on their accomplishments.
--Early TV coverage of the elections is lousy because the TV guys haven't figured out what the newspaper people learned a long time ago: News doesn't happen 24/7/365, and you can't have something fresh for every TV news cycle.
If they had any sense, the TV guys wouldn't start their news coverage until the polls close in the east. But as long as there are enough political junkies out there, they will start their coverage earlier than they should because there are ads to be sold and money to be made.
I find other things to do until 9 p.m. By then, they have a pretty good handle on what's going on nationally and I can get solid numbers on the early California trends. It makes watching TV much more rewarding.

I think we did as we could. Trump was a force though. He got nine for eleven in the Senate and all those dems that f'd Kavanagh got booted I think. Pelosi and Schiff and all those democrats that will now overreach on Trump will help his re-election. We will see. And Trump's presser this morning was great. The fake news jerks were really trying their best to get his goat and he made them kneel before their better.

A belligerent crowd made it unpleasant for LaMalfa to appear in Nevada County, exercising the heckler's veto over LaMalfa and people who attended just wanting to ask questions and be heard. LaMalfa took it, but didn't come back... Why should he if *your* friends were going to take over, and he'd easily win the seat without showing up.
Denney lost overwhelmingly district wide, eked out a three percent margin in Nevada County, far from the 2:1 margin in The Union's fake poll. The Union also failed to look seriously at Denney and her ballot claim to be an Educator/Farmer, without a classroom to teach in or a farm to farm. And her "AgEd" degrees prepared her to talk about farming to high school kids, not to farm. She was for "gun safety" that included banning lots of guns that can't fire six rounds any faster than an old police revolver, and can't fire 17 rounds any faster than a policeman's Glock. She also couldn't actually discuss the science behind "climate change".
Hodge won the 2nd largest plurality for the Grass Valley City Council... the largest was for Nobody. Undervotes won handily.
What did the county do to earn the Purple label?
Went for Steve Poizner by a large margin for Insurance Commissioner.
Repealed the gas tax (or would have had the state agreed)
Went for Brian Dahle.
And, Boardman... in this County... Feinstein lost to Kevin Leon who is nearly as far left as She Guevara, now the youngest congresscritter. Sometimes, when the people are given the choice between a Democrat and a Democrat, the Democrat will win. Fewer local yokels might have voted for Leon had DiFi not had a commanding lead in the polls.
Nevada County continues to be a Purple Puddle.
