Gov Newsom is outraged about the price of gasoline in California. He doesn’t understand why current prices in the state are well into the $4/gal range. In the best wisdom he and his can muster, they all accuse the oil companies for price fixing as the answer – another swig from the ‘capitalism is bad’ bottle satisfies everyone in Sacramento. None of those dumb schiffs have a clue about CA’s draconian fuel regulations, about our having to make our own gasoline from the one or two refineries that the econuts have not yet purged from the state with the most cars in the nation, about the cap-and-trade (2013) and other anti-CO2 programs we have going in addition to raising gas taxes again in 2018. We are paying $1.50 more than the country’s median price per gallon. Now the butt stupid Dems led by Newsom are going to “protect the public” by demanding that the state’s Energy Commission start an investigation on the matter, in addition to promising to launch legal actions against gasoline producers, distributors, and retailers. (more here)
All this to a constant drumbeat from Sacramento that calls for raising fuel prices so as to drive Californians to ditch their gas-powered cars. The 23oct19 WSJ reports, “The Governor last month ordered revenue to be redirected from the last gas tax hike, which was supposed to fund highway construction, to projects that ‘reverse the trend of increased fuel consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.’ So Californians in the future can look forward to paying more to drive on deteriorating roads as they head to homes without electricity due to blackouts. How long will it take California voters to figure out that these are problems made in Sacramento by politicians?” (emphasis mine) The Democrats feel sanguine that the answer is ‘never’ since they have assured that teaching the necessary critical thinking skills to their voter base were banished from our schools almost two generations ago.
‘Apoplectic Democrats’. A reader and correspondent who long-ago predicted the ‘Advent of Michelle’ (also known as 'The Second Coming') is now chortling in his beer. The more centrist Dems (yes, there still are some of them remaining on the DNC) are going into panic mode about the make-up of their candidate clown car, and more so because their grass roots constituents have drunk the Kool-Aid about the likely ones from whom they will choose their nominee. (For confirmation, read the progressive’s comments in these pages.) So, since Hillary continues to blow her remaining tires, the DNC leaders are casting their eye on the former first lady who has a very recognizable last name.
Yesterday’s NYT and New Yorker had “articles about how centrist and establishment Democrats are apoplectic over what is happening in the Democratic Primaries. (more here) Biden is fading, mentally and politically. He’s hanging on for dear life to a presumption coming into the primaries that he had what it takes, but he doesn’t. Bernie and Warren are viewed as gateway drugs to general election disaster. (For a brutal takedown of Warren’s electoral chances from a progressive view, read Why Criticize Warren? in Current Affairs.) The others in the race all have problems, from stone cold boring to non-starters. Kamala Harris is the biggest disappointment, there’s no there there. And there’s one person they both note who could walk away with the nomination, but doesn’t appear to want it.” (standing ovation please) Enter Michelle.
'Gentlemen, start your generators!' is the word from our politically punitive PG&E. Power shut-offs are scheduled to start this (23oct19) afternoon.
[24oct19 update] The relentless spread of dumbth in America is picking up speed. These pages have documented the destruction of our country’s public education in the hands of progressive teachers unions and liberal politicians working hard to maintain their plantations of minority constituents over the last half century. A just-released poll shows us that the First Amendment and free speech are in the sights of Millennials (“the dumbest generation”), and to a lesser extent supported by GenXers and Baby Boomers. (more here) Nearly 60% of Millennials think that the Constitution “goes too far in allowing hate speech in modern America”. It should now be amended so that “government should be able to take action against newspapers and TV stations that publish content that is biased, inflammatory, or false”. These are people who have passed way beyond the tipping point of being able to sustain our democratic republic. All this confirms that the latest generations have absolutely no understanding of the concept of free speech, and will gladly vote themselves into tyranny.
[25oct19 update] To confirm statewide assessments (starting with Gov Newsom) that PG&E management continues to be incompetent and corrupt, we read the report of the San Diego power company (SDG&E) that years ago anticipated the potential damage to their infrastructure from weather and fire. They responded by burying major transmission lines, and reconfigured their distribution network into smaller clusters that could be more surgically shutdown should the need arise. PGE, on the other hand, neglected all of this, paid their execs handsomely, successfully lobbied politicians and the PUC to turn a blind eye to their malfeasance, and is now forced to execute consumer shutdowns over large areas in which only a minuscule part experiences ‘high’ winds, the overwhelming remainder experiencing dead calm to light airs. Meanwhile, we in the foothills await yer another blackout starting tomorrow.

Boy, folks are getting pissed off.

The day the Hospitality House opened there was an instant increase in both the total number of transients or homeless and the amount of petty crime in the brunswick basin.. having lived at the top of old tunnel and seeing firsthand the increased foot traffic of the homeless and panhandlers it was clear to EVERYONE who lived in the area that the hospitality house was the common denominator in this situation.. to this day the concentration of the transients/homeless is in the brunswick basin area..
Who can verify actual permanent home placement numbers for HH? last I read their numbers were less than stellar. their placement ratio was actually horrible especially considering money spent services rendered and impact to local homes and businesses.
The homeless/transient problem is directly caused by the very people who are so hyper focused on fixing the issue... The balance between empathy and reason has shifted so far away from reason that decisions made by ELECTED officials who are PAID to make sure the balance is maintained and the good of the community is put before the needs of a drug using stealing panhandling thief.. this is CLEARLY not the case. instead we have a round table of people patting themselves on the back for their self absorbed feel good mentality.
we want to fix the homeless problem?
- get rid of HH
-uphold the F$&@ law and arrest and PROSECUTE dealers to the max of the law... again DEALERS...
-make being homeless in nevada county UNCOMFORTABLE!!! sorry to all of you with sensitive feelers... but the police should be confiscating removing and disbanding camps in real time. any and all drug paraphernalia needs to be confiscated and disposed of at time of contact. if this is what the homeless have to deal with then they will either make a life change or MOVE!!
take any $$ towards HH and apply it to mental health reform and programs for the homeless who are TRULY in need.
The empathetic way is NOT WORKING there needs to be balance! personal accountability, assistance to those that truly need it, and consequences for those that abuse the system and put the citizens of nevada county in danger.

“When we don’t educate our youngest generations about the historical truth of 100 million victims murdered at the hands of communist regimes over the past century, we shouldn’t be surprised at their willingness to embrace Marxist ideas,” Smith added. “We need to redouble our efforts to educate America’s youth about the history of communist regimes and the dangers of socialism today.”
Millennials polled also said they consider President Donald Trump the “biggest threat to world peace,” rating Trump as more dangerous to world peace than Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, or Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Ten percent of Millennials said Trump is “responsible for more deaths and human rights abuses” than mass-murder and Russian leader Joseph Stalin or notorious German dictator Adolf Hitler.

It was funny to watch the Prez tell the truth about chi town and then in the business as usual category we have -
HICAGO (AP) — An Illinois state lawmaker bribed a legislative colleague with an offer of $2,500 a month in exchange for the state senator's support of sweepstakes-related legislation, according to a federal complaint unsealed on Monday.
Rep. Luis Arroyo, 65, made the offer on Aug. 2 and handed over an initial check on Aug. 22 for the unidentified lawmaker's backing of the legislation in the Illinois Senate, the complaint says.
The Chicago Democrat's alleged willingness to arrange regular payments for legislative support stands out even in a state with a history of brazen public corruption.
The 12-page complaint describes the moment Arroyo gave the check to his colleague in a suburban Chicago restaurant, citing a federal wiretap that allegedly captured their conversation.
"I'm going to give you this here," Arroyo tells the senator, the complaint says. "This is, this is, this is the jackpot."
When Arroyo asked at an earlier meeting if the lawmaker wanted the $2,500 checks each month for six months or each month for a year, the senator responds: "A year sounds great."

“The same California that has boldly committed to transitioning to 50 percent renewable energy by 2025 -- and 100 percent renewable energy by 2045 -- can't manage its existing energy infrastructure.
The same California that has pushed its electricity rates to the highest in the contiguous United States through its mandates and regulations doesn't provide continuous access to that overpriced electricity.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has to try to evade responsibility for this debacle while presiding over it, blames "dog-eat-dog capitalism" for the state's current crisis. It sounds like he's referring to robber barons who have descended on the state to suck it dry of profits while burning it to the ground. But Newsom is talking about one of the most regulated industries in the state -- namely California's energy utilities that answer to the state's public utilities commission.
This is not exactly an Ayn Rand operation. The state could have, if it wanted, pushed the utilities to focus on the resilience and safety of its current infrastructure -- implicated in some of the state's most fearsome recent fires -- as a top priority. Instead, the commission forced costly renewable energy initiatives on the utilities. Who cares about something as mundane as properly maintained power lines if something as supposedly epically important -- and politically fashionable -- as saving the planet is at stake?....
In 2016, then-Gov. Jerry Brown actually vetoed a bill that unanimously passed the state Legislature to promote the clearing of trees dangerously close to power lines. Brown's team says this legislation was no big deal, but one progressive watchdog called the bill "neither insignificant or small."

re: the PUC
Really, when was it not ever thus? If the point of pure capitalism is to extract money from The People and hand it to guys with cigars in boardrooms, the point of pure socialism is to extract money from The People and hand it to the political backers and friends/family of the rulers. It's a problem the Soviet Union hit in spades.
The Public Utilities Commission is obviously constructed (mostly, at least) from the purest political patronage. A group of flacks with resumes constructed from a series of gubmint jobs, corporate boards, non-profits, and the odd lawyering gig.
There's probably a lesson from the Venetian sea-going empire here. If a .gov official (it was one big company in a sense) got caught stealing ducats through the layers of auditing, he got hauled home for a bit of torture in a subbasement of the Doge's palace. You can have non-corrupt government, but it takes something of a stick to make it work I think.

As usual, lots of podium and lecturing and railing at the winds.
If that silly woman spent a bit of time worrying about emergency power at her own city hall, cutting down brush in town, pushing the planning commission towards fire-safe construction, handling the homeless in some way that didn't burn down the county, she might be of some use to somebody.

Well, the mayor was deeply involved in A.P.P.L.E. (Alliance for Post Petroleum something) until the place shuddered its doors due to no viable business plan and inability to pay the rent that the Nirvanna City Council graciously slashed on the city owned building for her. But, people walked into the all green place and could feel the good vibes. Wonder it that storefront was affected by recent the outage(s).
From a practical standpoint, does the mayor have any idea how much it costs for a couple of those custom outfitted PG&E trucks? Any idea how many thousands of dollars of tools and equipment are in each of those trucks? How many thousands of dollars spent just on safety meetings and best practices? That is assuming just the costs for maintenance of exiting infrastructure, nor counting wages, insurance, benefits, workmen’s comp, bonding, equipment yard, or generating the city’s own power and new lines. Does the mayor know the costs of putting lines underground under roads and HYW 49 from the solar field up on Sugar Loaf Mountain?
Heck, it’s been about 20 years, but I once ran into the Nevada City worker who ran the city’s water maintenance lines. A value feeding the city was mysteriously (inadvertently?) shut off. He was a splendid fellow, driving an old beat up 4 banger small pickup.. Looked like a 2 wheel drive Ford Courier with tires than needed to be replaced.
Let’s get ready for the Post Petroleum future! I am sure she can get all the solar fields and equipment donated to the cause and free labor to boot.

Doug LaMalfa, the simple farmer speaks.
Since 2002, I’ve served in the California State Assembly, the State Senate, and now the U.S. House of Representatives. Never during my time in elected office have I witnessed a scene quite like the darkened towns and neighborhoods I saw last weekend while driving through Northern California. I do not accept these frequent power outages as the new normal.
There are sometimes situations that require a larger degree of vigilance – everyone understands that – but we are not a third world country and the power should not be shut off for thousands of people every time the wind blows.
Years of bad policy decisions from Sacramento cannot be reversed overnight, but a decade in the dark is unacceptable. PG&E has spent far more on renewable power ($2.4 billion) than they have on updating outdated infrastructure ($1.5 billion). It's time to rethink those priorities. PG&E must commit fully to hardening and upgrading the electrical grid and California must get out of its own way and allow the type of tree trimming and management that’s necessary to improve safety.
There will be those who say it can’t be done any sooner, and to those people, I say get out of the way. For thousands of people in our state, these outages are incredibly frustrating and, in some cases, life-threatening. Worst of all, they’re unnecessary. The situation we find ourselves in is the result of years – even decades – of incompetence and mismanagement. I refuse to accept this as California’s 10-year future, and I will fight at the federal level tooth and nail to ensure that isn’t the case.

He was very angry and saying he was going to kill her. He beat her with a giant walking stick . These homeless people who live by the apartments are dangerous and drug addicted. How can we come together as a community to remove these people from living by the apartments! This is absurd... we need to take control of our town. I'm sick of this! Please be aware when your out and about this guy is still on the loose ! Police were called but they have not been able to find him yet..."

re: Walt
The tricky thing in keeping the homeless from burning us to death is inventing ordinances that pass legal muster. I wonder if you could just set aside a dirt/paved lot and make camping outside of that area illegal (and enforced). I suppose that the 9th Court decision is something of a roadblock towards having any kind of public safety.

Marysville tried to move the homeless and failed. They let the homeless go camp down by the river and everything was OK for while. The county even sent a bunch of social workers in and all sorts of people down there to help them out at great cost. Then they discovered that families walking with their children down by the river at the parks and such were not safe. Marysville tried to move them from the river and somebody filed suit and the judge's ruling is if you move the homeless, you have to provide them with a 'resting place'. Housing them comes at even a greater price! Sutter County and Yuba County has about the same number of homeless per capita as Nevada County.
Your idea of a designated place is good...but on whose property? Not on private property; liability would be a non-starter. Opps, strike than. Send them to Starbucks!

The socialist dems can and have pushed for crazy and this is likely not the last time people will defend their interests, especially in the face of crazy squared! -
The council is officially nonpartisan, but Republicans stand little chance of getting elected in Seattle, and many of the business-backed candidates are moderate to progressive Democrats. The race will decide whether the council is dominated by socialists and extremely liberal Democrats or more centrist ones.
“We are contributing to this election because we care deeply about the future of Seattle,” Amazon spokesman Aaron Toso said in a statement. “We believe it is critical that our hometown has a City Council that is focused on pragmatic solutions to our shared challenges in transportation, homelessness, climate change and public safety.”
Progressive Democratic presidential candidates Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders are among those accusing Amazon of trying to buy the council.
The elections come a year after a political debacle that damaged the council’s popularity. The leaders unanimously passed the “Amazon tax,” designed to make lucrative companies contribute more to affordable housing for the homeless.
It repealed the tax after a revolt from Amazon, which would have had to pay around $11 million a year and threatened to halt its growth in the city. The company said Seattle didn’t need more money and that it was “highly uncertain whether the City Council’s anti-business positions or its spending inefficiency will change for the better.”
The debate helped cement Amazon’s awakening to local politics as the council’s popularity slipped, especially over its handling of homelessness. Four council members decided not to seek re-election.
There’s been little progress in the four years since the city declared a homelessness crisis. Many business interests support “sweeps” of homeless camps accompanied by teams to help people get services.
Liberal council members, including Sawant, say the sweeps are inhumane and don’t work. She wants money for tiny-house villages.
Meanwhile, some in Sawant’s district say she’s more interested in building a national socialist movement than responding to their concerns. A large portion of her donations come from out of state.

It would be a good idea to make a cheat sheet so that well meaning people (plus Der Mayor) could size/compare/contrast various types of power and the rates of use for same. The math ain't all that hard.
With all this talk of NID taking over (and no doubt building solar powered microgrids), you do have to wonder what the Gods of Accounting will have to say about liability issues, taking over an ageing infrastructure (and it's probably worse here than in other places), etc. My own guess is that Nevada County is highly subsidized by the more populated areas in terms of electric power and telecommunications because of the way rates are currently fixed.

Those *do* look seriously well-constructed (a success!!), and with enough goats the Voortrek to the Rood Center Utah Phillips Hospitality Lot could begin almost immediately.

Just got in and my darn power was on. Should have guarded my place more carefully. I snooze, I loose. Now, excuse me while I make a bee line to the tub to take a nice long soak.
