In the affairs of Man ignorance trumps plenty every time.
After hearing the Republicans expose all the exculpatory evidence the Dems withheld, their position now is 1) well OK, maybe our evidence against Trump is really not all that “overwhelming”, but 2) the real overwhelming evidence exists and will come out if we can continue the investigation and hear from our list of witnesses. The president’s defense team’s position is 1) let’s use that overwhelming evidence of yours that took three years to develop, then 2) there’s no need to continue this investigation in the Senate, but if required, we have our own list of witnesses to be called. Wanna play?
The lamestream media coverage has been all one-sided. Last week they hung on every word from Schiff, Nadler, et al as they spun out their allegations, presumptions, beliefs, … without a shred of evidence that any of it constituted “high crimes and misdemeanors” or for that matter, any acts historically unique to this president in carrying out his duties. When the Republican defense took the podium, the major lamestream outlets gave those arguments short shrift, and focused entirely on their new great hope, the presumed testimony of former national security adviser John Bolton. (Attentive readers know that FN is the only voice of balance and reason against the phalanx of leftwing propaganda continually spewed by ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, and MSNBC. National news is not a level playing field.)
To give credit where due, the lamestream has perfectly performed as the public communications arm of Team Schiff and his House managers. Nowhere do they inform their viewers that it was not Donald Trump but Joe Biden who pulled off the quid pro quo with Ukraine by threatening to withhold aid if they did not immediately (within six hours) fire the prosecutor investigating Ukraine’s Burisma on whose board sat energy naïf Hunter Biden raking in cartloads of cash. That Obama-launched corruption was a ripe target for investigation to understand how our aid monies were spent. But that was a politically incorrect endeavor, and therefore not considered by anyone outside the administration, most certainly not by Team Schiff.
Circling back to John Bolton, it interests me no end to follow the career of the former Trump staffer after he publishes his ‘kiss and tell’ memoir that claims to out at a most inconvenient time the confidential Oval Office conversations between him and the president of the United States, the man he was sworn to serve in a professional manner. Who in hell would now engage Bolton in any kind of consulting or advisory capacity knowing that he has demonstrably defected in positions that demand confidence and trust?
George
My question is why the Senate Republicans didn't just call the Biden's, whistle blower etc to enhance their case and influence public opinion which looks pretty grim when it comes to allowing witnesses. also it's pretty much 50-50 when it comes to impeachment conviction which is not very good compared to public opinion on Clinton for example. Public opinion of the Repubs was pretty low two years ago with the House taking 41 seats. What indication do you have that it has changed from less than two years later?

What a surprise. At least they are consistent.

Bill. They can piss and moan all they like. Trump stays President.
That "overwhelming evidence" ain't so overwhelming.
Even Emery can't show where it holds water.

The pony tail of ignorance needs to direct his questions to botox Nancy and schiff for brains as to why they failed to properly do their job as prosecutors in the house.
Could the reason they didn't subpoena Bolton was they knew it would set up a separation of powers court case that did not fit their rush to judgment dog and pony show? LOL
;-)

The ulterior motive.
https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2020/01/31/house-democrats-ask-senate-for-one-week-for-witnesses-documents/
"Alternatively, the “one week” offer also provided Democrats with a simple request that, if denied, could be used as evidence that the House impeachment managers had been willing to compromise with Republicans.
House Democrats did not, however, explain how the “one week” offer would fit into the cramped political schedule for next week. Following Super Bowl LIV on Sunday, the presidential primary process kicks off Monday with the Iowa caucuses. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump is scheduled to deliver the State of the Union address — thanks to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), herself who invited him."
"One week" for extra dirty tricks.

"What indication do you have that it has changed from less than two years later?"
Have you Shane the clown car lately? The best thing going for the democrats is keeping the focus on impeachment and off those hideous unexciting boring creatures that they called their candidates.
Keep the focus on impeachment. The democrats are looking for love in all the wrong places with the voters.
Posted by: Bill Tozer | 31 January 2020 at 01:01 PM
PaulE 1241pm - Paul, had you been paying attention to the "overwhelming" evidence the Dems have been describing, and then the Repubs Saturday massacre of their entire case, then you'd know that there was no need tor the defense to "enhance their case", the Dems had already enhanced it enough for acquittal.

If you spent less time blowing bubbles you might know a thing...
Trump's legal team has repeatedly argued that the Senate should not vote to hear testimony from John Bolton, Trump's former national security adviser. Patrick Philbin, deputy counsel to the President, claimed that House Democrats, "didn't even subpoena John Bolton, below. They didn't even try to get his testimony."
Facts First: Philbin was technically correct that House Democrats didn't subpoena Bolton — but he was incorrect that "they didn't even try to get his testimony."
Democrats formally asked Bolton on Oct. 30 to voluntarily testify on Nov. 7.
Bolton did not show up — because the White House had told current and former officials not to participate in the impeachment inquiry. As Rep. Adam Schiff, the Democrats' lead impeachment manager, explained in his subsequent remarks following Philbin's assertion, Democrats decided not to subpoena Bolton because they were concerned about how long the resulting court battle would likely take.
Trump's team is within its rights to argue that Democrats did not try hard enough to get Bolton to testify, but "didn't even try" is not true.
Trump made a similar claim on Twitter on Monday. You can read a full fact check here.

"Sen. Lisa Murkowski will not support hearing new witness testimony, virtually ensuring a Democrat-led effort to subpoena additional witnesses and documents in President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial is headed to defeat."
You know, if you just called enough witnesses, fired up enough wiretaps, paid off or threatened enough informants, some sketchy evil-doing might pop out. Just fish and fish and fish.
One of the great ironies of our age is that the Trump administration is, by far, the most transparent administration in history. Not that he wanted that of course, but it's not such a bad thing that voters have a more jaundiced view of our rulers, whoever they may be.

From JHK's pen to your ear.
"What a fatal mistake, allowing Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) to make himself the face of the Democratic Party. They would have been better off with another scion of Hollywood: the Phantom of the Opera. This grubby seditionist has marched the party into a wilderness of deceit and knavery that taints them all, and when this grotesque impeachment episode is over, a new chapter of consequences will open that should leave the party for dead.
It’s hard to think of a more loathsome figure in US political history than Adam Schiff. General James Wilkinson? Senator Theodore Bilbo? Benjamin “Pitchfork” Tillman? Joseph McCarthy? Hillary Clinton? And that doesn’t count the mere rogues and rascals like Huey Long, Boss Tweed, and George Wallace. A universe of chaos lurks behind Mr. Schiff’s slick Tinseltown façade. The impeachment he led was crippled from the start with violations of process and errors of logic of exactly the kind that drives his party’s Woke hysteria with its assaults on free speech, its vicious “cancel” culture, its reckless race-hatred, its depraved Transsexual Reading Hours, and its neurotic obsession with Russian phantoms — a matrix of beliefs that would embarrass a conclave of medieval necromancers."

Oh odlaa, Say it, don’t spray it. Now is to Clinton back in the nineties? Ok,
Joe Biden says no need for witnesses. I believe him.
“In January 1999, then-Sen. Joe Biden argued strongly against the need to depose additional witnesses or seek new evidence in a memo sent to fellow Democrats ahead of President Bill Clinton’s impeachment trial.” Bresnahan and Everett add: “The Biden campaign declined to comment.”
Quotable quote (from Biden memo): “In light of the extensive record already compiled, it may be that the benefit of receiving additional evidence or live testimony is not great enough to outweigh the public costs (in terms of national prestige, faith in public institutions, etc.) of such a proceeding. While a judge may not take such considerations into account, the Senate is uniquely competent to make such a balance.”

IT’S ALL OVER BUT THE WHINING [UPDATED]
With Lamar Alexander and Lisa Murkowski announcing that they will vote against calling witnesses, the Senate’s impeachment proceeding nears an end. I thought they might actually vote tonight and bring the farce to a merciful conclusion, but apparently that isn’t happening. The New York Post offers a bipartisan explanation, but I suspect that part of what is going on is that the Democrats hope to extend the process beyond President Trump’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday.
Why? Why not? As the final vote approaches, we are reminded that the president’s acquittal in the Senate was always a foregone conclusion. It has never been clear how the Democrats will avoid looking silly when their scheme inevitably falls far short. I think a plurality of voters already believe the whole impeachment process has been a waste of time, and that conclusion will only become stronger when it ends in failure.
Our long national nightmare is about to end. Unless you’re a Democrat.
UPDATE: As expected, the Senate voted against calling witnesses, 51-49. Legislation has been introduced in Utah to permit recall of a sitting senator..
Quote, unquote.

Just waiting for the Fat Lady to sing.
Impeachment Charade Almost Over?
What Paul endeavored to force Democrats to answer is precisely what Mark Alexander has asserted from the early days of this charade and reiterated Wednesday in his column, “Topping My Impeachment Witness List: Adam Schiff” — Schiff and his staff colluded with Ciaramella. “Schiff has coordinated the entire impeachment narrative and is its principal author and director. Thus, subjecting Schiff to Republican cross-examination would reveal his collusion with the ‘whistleblower’ — which would unravel the entire case against Trump.”
While Roberts blocked Paul’s question, he did read a similar one from Sen. Ron Johnson that asked about Schiff’s reported hiring of an individual who had contact with the whistleblower — a hiring that occurred the day after Trump’s phone call with the Ukrainian president. Schiff responded with righteous indignation suggesting that the question itself was a “smearing of the professional people that work for the Intelligence Committee” and that he “will not dignify those smears on my staff by giving them any credence whatsoever; nor will I share any information which I believe could or could not lead to the identification of the whistleblower.”
But Chief White House Counsel Pat Cipollone was having none of Schiff’s obfuscation. He argued, “So I think [the senators] deserve an answer to that question, and I think it’s time in this country that we stop assuming that everybody has horrible motives, in the puritanical rage of just everybody’s doing something wrong, except for you. ‘You cannot be questioned’ — that’s part of the problem here.”

What a glorious ending to the impeachment circus - both sides are deliriously happy with the outcome. Only our split Congress could pull off something like that - everyone wins!!

Now that they failed to kill the king they get back to rigging the dem nomination like good ol' dems-
In conversations on the sidelines of a DNC executive committee meeting and in telephone calls and texts in recent days, about a half-dozen members have discussed the possibility of a policy reversal to ensure that so-called superdelegates can vote on the first ballot at the party’s national convention. Such a move would increase the influence of DNC members, members of Congress and other top party officials, who now must wait until the second ballot to have their say if the convention is contested.

Yes, Trump’s Acquittal Is Real, And It’s Spectacular
“The most amazing thing about Democrats and their allies in the media is that they never actually lose. Any time it seems like they lose, it’s actually the result of cheating and chicanery.
Hillary Clinton didn’t lose 2016, the Russians interfered and the Electoral College is racist. Stacy Abrams didn’t lose in Georgia, the election was stolen. And sure enough, the calls have already come out to say that House Democrats aren’t really going to lose the impeachment trial, because without additional witnesses the trial isn’t legitimate and the acquittal isn’t real.
Not this time. Mitch McConnell, President Trump’s legal team, and the GOP made fools of the Democrats and drank their milkshake. But this will not stop the aggrieved cackling heads from claiming this is all somehow fake.”

Yup, now back to the business at hand. Screwing over Burnie with a rigged election.
Gotta love Socialist style candidate picking. Keep thinking your vote means something LIBS, HELL. Only two states really have a say who you will vote for as President wannabe. Well that's as long as they "vote" for the one your deep staters decide.
Venezuela.... American style.

How about the Repubs losing the last Congressional less than two years ago by 41 seats? That was a true measure of support for Trump and it hasn't changed since then.

But I'm sure your voting against all the great advances Trump has done. No need to answer that. That's a forgone conclusion.

No Paul Emery you cannot pick and choose. You still attack GWB for his service and the Iraq war. We are aware you voted for Obama and love the crease in his pants. He was responsible for losing the most House seats ever in 2010. The democrats regained 41 in 2018. I think the NOW is NOW and you can cry all you want but we kicked your sorry ass a lot more than you did ours.

Are you saying that Bolton is manufactured evidence?
Posted by: Paul Emery | 01 February 2020 at 10:15 AM
I cannot believe I turn on RR to Punchy’s knee jerk reaction. It would be nice if Paul responded rather than react.
Paul, you don’t have to read my 5:11 pm link. You don’t have to do anything. But, it might behoove you to at least read the first three paragraphs of my 5:11 pm to get the context. Life is not all black and white, but to use a horrible metaphor, it’s 50 shades of gray.
During the Obama years (ending just 3 years ago), the R’s took back something like 1,150 federal, state, county, and municipal elected seats. The governorships that went R in that 6 year period (2010-2016) were most noteworthy.
I heard (not read) from someone reading breakdowns that the 2018 midterms resulted in almost half the Dem’s Obama era losses (from top to bottom) were won back by the Democrat Party. 600 plus seats. So, it took just two years under Orange Man Bad and under the Russian Collusion Delusion Witch-hunt Hoax for the Dems to claw back half their losses.
So, there is your bone for the day. Blame Trump for losing Statehouses and Congressional seats in 2018, including AB-15. They are still working hard on AR-15. There, all better now.
And yes, you should be dancing in the streets with the dumb stupid mind-numbed Senate R’s not calling for witnesses in the impeachment trial. They just committed suicide! It’s manna from heaven dropped in your lap, Paul. How fortunate for you. You hit the jackpot with a lot of help from the Senate R’s. Don’t they read the polls???
The Circle of Jerks has turned into a circular firing squad and the voters will crush the R’s at the ballot box come November. It’s your wet dream come true, Mr. Emery. The light at the end of the tunnel just got much bigger and brighter.
You won, we lost. You are big, we are small. You are many, we are few. We cannot do anything but accept our fate and hang our heads low in shame. At least we can show you how to accept losing.
Good thing Punchy does not do satire well. He has difficulty wrapping his head around it. Always has.

It was your guy Trump that called for Bush to be impeached for lying about the need for war yet you never say a word about that.
Posted by: Paul Emery | 01 February 2020 at 10:36 AM
Yes Paul we agree!
As far as the impeachment goes, it’s over. Man is it ever. Sometimes there is a commenter here that is always the last to know. Strike ‘sometimes.’
It was our dear Gregory who had to break the news to Paul the last time...the Mueller Report.
“Do you deny that Mueller did not exonerate Trump?”...followed by hours and days of “Trump is NOT exonerated!!” and links. Do you deny Trump is not exonerated for Obstruction of Justice?. Here read this quote from Mueller’s statement. Do you deny he said that???!!!!!?????!!!”
Then, a solitary voice of reason appeared in a clear, conscience, and complete statement from Gregory:
“It’s over Paul”.
It’s over Paul. No Bolton , no what ifs. It’s a good day...unless you are a Democrat. Then you are still fighting the last war and the lost war.
I think we can live with that just fine. Friday the NYT dropped another bombshell. Another Hail Mary. Another missile that landed in the ocean.
It’s over, Paul.

Yeah, Tood, what about BDS?
Yesterday was quite informative. Mt Odlar erupted and spewed out everything he was holding back and recircled the same barn a dozen times. Bill Clinton got screwed, the sites we read are Fakenews, we are dumb, corrupt in bed with Putin and on and on.
During the eruption, I heard shades of Roberta, shades of Punchy, shades of Michael P Anderson, shades of Steve’ s butt boy, shades of ‘M’, shades of them plus more all rolled up into one. Rather interesting.
Wouldn’t it be something if we only have one sock puppet here with multiple personalities...kind of schizo doing the Lord’s work.
Hmm, Odau disappears and Punchy emerges. Then Roberta emerges to give Punchy backup. The they disappear and the current Oldam emerges to do the heavy lifting. Suppose it is not a tag team, but a guy who goes to family reunions to pick up dates?
Excuse the diversion off topic, Dr. Rebane, but teachers’ pets can get away with it f not done too much. :)
Meanwhile back at the Senate, the custodians are cleaning up the Lying Sacks of Schiffs’ mess.
Posted by: Bill Tozer | 01 February 2020 at 11:05 AM
Meanwhile over at the Senate.....
While the Fakenews and Lefties are trying with everything they have to win arguments, while we are racking up victories. Truly, they are ‘Number Two!’ with a string of ‘winning’ arguments while not winning. Ok, I concede. They get the boobie prize, the door prize, and a seat in the audience. All we get is the speaker’s podium and the folks on stage.
Posted by: Bill Tozer | 01 February 2020 at 11:24 AM
First I have to say to those of you resting on the laurels being bestowed upon the Senate by your deplorable brethren, there is certainly another shoe to drop. If it does not drop between today and Wednesday at 1 pm (EST) when the Senate convenes to vote on removal, it will drop in the near future, exposing the Republican party for the sycophantic hot mess that it is.
Second, I believe that John Bolton, whose musings continue to leak out exposing the President as both a liar and a dangerous tyrant, has a tough choice to make over the next few days; will he be remembered as a patriotic defender of the Constitution, or a weak willed, self interested, fraud.
That Bolton disagreed with and opposed President Trump's extortion of Zelensky is clear--reported by multiple parties and in his won words--but will he speak?
Many years ago I read Robert S. McNamara's book "In Retrospect."
Halfway through the book I threw my arms up in disgust when I realized that while he was publicly supporting expansion of the war in Vietnam in private he was advocating for withdrawal because he had become convinced that the war could not be won.
In 1965 McNamara and McGeorge Bundy wrote President Johnson telling him "..."both of us are now pretty well convinced that our present policy can lead only to disastrous defeat.." which led to a dramatic escalation of the war and commitment of 280,000 troops over the next year. By 1966 McNamara was saying behind the scenes that the war likely could not be won and we should be finding the way out.
Here he was, a public official, a person in a position of serious trust, a man who sent more than another 300,000 young men to Vietnam after he had concluded it was a lost cause and before he finally left the administration in 1967, who failed to speak up, in front of Congress when he had the opportunity several times in 1966 and 1967, in public after he left, or for 30 years after.
John Bolton can be a patriot or he can be Robert McNamara....he can speak up now that he is out of office, or he can stay silent, and we will hear the first hand report in a book for $30 a pop in March.
President Trump, regardless of whether you like any other policies he advocates, is personally a weak, compromised, immature, intellectually challenged, self absorbed man child...he cares about nothing but his dick and his wallet...and in a crises he will crumble.
A crises will come and Americans will die because Trump is President.
Bolton has a choice...
Posted by: Steven Frisch | 01 February 2020 at 11:24 AM
Here is the core of the problem for the frishy set who think in times of crisis he will crumble, not following the news much eh? -
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump thinks differently than any client he has ever had, often contradicting common wisdom and then seeing his way work out in the end, former White House counsel Don McGahn said Friday at a conference of conservative lawyers and scholars.
Others will tell the president that something is impossible. Nevertheless, the president will pursue it, “but then it works,” McGahn said at a conference of Florida chapters of The Federalist Society.
“He goes through a decision-tree faster than anyone I’ve seen, to get where he thinks the situation is going to go,” McGahn said during a question-and-answer format with Jan Crawford, CBS News' chief legal correspondent . “He thinks differently than anyone else I've represented."

I think that what both of you miss, and that you and many other here are in complete denial about, is that a persons core character matters when a crises occurs....are they motivated by a higher purpose and values, or their dick and their wallet?
No amount of "whataboutsim" from fish, or the contention that the President is a superhuman mutant capable of rapid decision making, can make up for the fact that the President is functionally ignorant, reactionary and fearful.
A crises will happen and the gang here will be either making excuses for his behavior or rushing to wash the blood off their hands.
