See an older paper Aug 22, 2005, related to SARS-CoV (remember that?), Vincent et al. Virology Journal 2005,2:69, "Chloroquine is a potent inhibitor of SARS coronavirus infection and spread". The current virus is often referenced as SARS-CoV-2. So it isn't like an association of chloroquine & any of the coronaviruses was a surprise.

From page 8/10 of the paper, under DISCUSSION - "We have identified chloroquine as an effective antiviral agent for SARS-CoV in cell culture conditions, as evidenced by its inhibitory effect when the drug was added prior to infection or after the initiation and establishment of infection. The fact that chloroquine exerts an antiviral effect during pre- and post-infection conditions suggest that it is likely to have both prophylactic and therapeutic advantages".

My Note - it was BOTH prophylactic (can prevent you from getting it) and therapeutic (can treat it after you get it). One caveat -These were African green-monkey kidney-cell studies, not real human studies. Word on the street was that there were only a limited number of bat-eating Chinese available here in the States for human testing.

....but the Vegan "food" remains.

the current outbreak is often referred to as SARS-CoV-2 'cause that's its official name.

btw crabby has gone off the deep end... "Our friends on the right have determined the only way to save the nation is to sacrifice the elderly to the Great God of Monitarism, and the sooner we do it, the sooner the stock market will bounce back from the abyss. ... How different they sound from the days when they howled about “death panels” and whined about that TV commercial where Paul Ryan pushes an old woman in a wheelchair off the cliff."

Gregory 1058am - That is indeed a sad commentary, and confirms again and again the Left's inability to differentiate and reason in their quest to make public policy - the graves of millions attest to their failure. And today, as our local-left thought leaders again demonstrate, they can't tell the difference between the death committees of nationalized health care systems, selecting who lives and dies, from the willingness of our older generation to voluntarily assume a heightened risk of death during an emergency so that we can leave an America with a sound economy to our progeny. The leftists' argument sees no difference in how our seniors may go to their reward, no understanding whatsoever; to them it's all the same body count.

It appears that transparency in education is a bad thing that's also scary to the socialist dems -

Professors are now worried that the political bias they bring to the classroom will be easily recorded and exposed to the public now that their courses have been moved online due to the Wuhan coronavirus.

Nasty Seth Meyers: ‘Sociopath’ Trump Cares More For His 'Personal Fortunes' Than 'Saving Lives'

“[N]ow Trump is being goaded on in this sadistic plan to put profits over lives by CEOs, economic advisers in fringe characters on the right who are actually suggesting that it might be worth letting some people die in order to save the economy....

Now at an extremely dangerous moment where a reckless ruling class and a self-absorbed president are trying to prematurely end the fight against a dangerous pandemic because their stock portfolios are taking a hit. This is sociopathic governance.”

‘Scarborough Smears Conservatives as Monsters Who Want to ‘Euthanize’ Seniors’

“It is senior citizens who they're ready to euthanize because they want Boeing's corporate earnings to not dip too low. They want to make sure that people that own businesses in their district or in their states will keep giving them campaign contributions.”......

“So this argument that we're going to just let senior citizens die because they're no longer productive, that's the argument that is taking hold in the Republican Party.”

FEAR: False Evidence Appearing Real.

Dunno why the Blue Mob has such a time imagining that there's a fine balancing act between quarantine and economy. After all, you need an economy to build ventilators and produce food.

But, pshaw. Anything to win an election. Sadly, the pandemic encourages that most evil of thinking, nationalism. That should be squashed at all cost.

Once again, commercial disengagement from China should be the Prime Directive once this is all over. Maybe it's time for that argument on comparative advantage again.

The Chinese Communist Party v America

It continues to stun me that the Left is stuck in linear thinking. If Ukraine tried to interfere in the US 2016 (as the Ukrainian government’s own interval investigation confirmed) then....then.....then are you saying Russian did not interfere in our elections!.!?!?!

All black and white. They seem incapable of grasping issues that are complex and have multiple causes and effects nor are they adept to holding conflicting ideas on the same issue. Good vs bad, no 50 shades of grey, no 50 ways to leave your lover.
I confess I took a rather sick pleasure in watching them waste week focusing of calling the Wuhan Virus the Wuhan Virus as an blatant overt act of racism. Nothing to due with stopping, slowing, curing the spread of the pandemic or our National Emergency, just distracted over the Greater Good. In this case it’s the lesser of two evils. Trump is a racist is more evil than fixing a very evil and rather nasty problem.

I'd suggest Crabbie and all other scaredycats to hunkerdown with their thermometer, oximeter and TP stores (like ME!) and avoid going outside except in emergencies until there's a viable treatment.

My emergent emergency is an immediate need for a fresh bottle of Tanqueray and some limes... more tonic water would also be prudent. I had to settle for a Vodka and tonic last night.

Will the Lefties come back and sing the praises of Socialized medicine? (Emery??,, Cross Bobby?)

"They are picking and choosing who lives,, and who DIES....."

C'est la mort. Everyone ends up with the similar problem of 2 people, 1 piece of equipment in the Era of Captain Trips.

There's certainly a lesson in the way that all of the various ways of institutionalizing health care have failed in a time of emergency. Truly, they were never set up for that. The handwaving talking heads shouting 'THIS IS WHY WE NEED MEDICARE FOR ALL' are just experts at backside smoke blowing. That's certainly not going to help produce a surge in capacity.

I was interested in the local Blue Mob fussing about how Rethuglicans want to kill all the old people. They should look into the situation in Sweden and the Netherlands to watch how their BFF are handling this.

Pompous Pompeo insists on racist name for virus at G-7. Did the Ft. Dix New Jersey outbreak get called the Dix flu, the Jersey flu? No, they called it the Swine flu or H1N1.

“We were alone and it was the strangest thing,” she said. “There was no like exchange really. He just had me up against the wall.”

Reade went on to say that she was wearing a business skirt with no stockings because it was hot at the time. While up against the wall, Reade says Biden’s “hands were on me and underneath my clothes.”

“He went down my skirt but then up inside it and he penetrated me with his fingers,” Reade emotionally continued.

Reade also said Biden was kissing her and saying multiple things to her. She remembered a couple of the comments.

“I remember him saying first, like as he was doing it, ‘Do you want to go somewhere else,’” she said. “And then him saying to me when I pulled away, he got finished doing what he was doing, and I kind of just pulled back and he said, ‘Come on man, I heard you liked me.’ And that phrase stayed with me because I kept thinking what I might’ve said and I can’t remember exactly if he said ‘I thought’ or ‘I heard’ but he implied that I had done this.”

Reade then went on to say that “everything shattered in that moment” because she knew that there were no witnesses and she looked up to him. “He was like my father’s age,” she said. “He was like this champion of women’s rights in my eyes and I couldn’t believe it was happening. It seemed surreal.”

Reade then said Biden grabbed her by the shoulders and said, “You’re okay. You’re fine” and proceeded to walk away.
Reade said that Biden also told her something after the alleged assault that she initially didn’t want to share because “it’s the thing that stays in my head over and over.” But after some pressing from Halper, Reade decided to share:

“He took his finger. He just like pointed at me and said you’re nothing to me.”

wanna 535pm - You got that one wrong also; the 2009 swine flu originated from a pig farm in Veracruz, Mexico. I guess calling it Veracruz flu in 2009 was a bit too cumbersome or politically incorrect under Obama. And where do you guys get this "racist" crap for those who continue to name the epidemic after the location of its source (a long practiced convention)? Does someone send you people an email telling you that you all must now start singing the "racist" chorus when the current coronavirus pandemic is called the Wuhan virus after the city where it started?

Oh Bertie.....why are you out from under your bed?

MJ and Rx are, as usual, out of their minds. As George notes, Wuhan is where it did (not, is thought to have) originated and naming it is thus is perfectly normal. I wouldn't call it the "Chinese viru,s" not because it's racist (Chinese isn't a race) but because like as not they (the Chinese) will probably continue to produce such aberrant disorders on a more or less regular basis. We may need the name again... Anyone remember "Hong Kong flu"?

Just a thought, you might want to cut spending in reaction to the new reality I mean all the billionaires left the room already -

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said Thursday that the stimulus bill passed by the Senate to offer Americans relief during the coronavirus crisis helped unemployment insurance and small businesses but did little to aid local or state governments. He said that what's happening to any state or city government is "a double whammy" — a loss of revenue as less taxes are paid while businesses are closed and people lose their jobs, coupled with an increase in expenses due to the virus.

The anticipated loss of revenue for New York state is estimated to be somewhere between $10 billion and $15 billion, Cuomo said. The state government receives $5 billion under the stimulus bill, but it is earmarked only for COVID-19 expenses, he said.

Listen to the “experts”

- Dr. Anthony Fauci said that the reason Italy is being hammered is because its large Chinese immigrant population. While the Communist Party of China denied the infectious Wuhan Virus and its existence, 20,000 Chinese tourists and business persons flew into the USA per day....until Trump shut that horse shit down. The flights between China and Italy remained open at the time as our brain dead liberals cried, “Racism! Racism!”
“In powerful show of defiance of #coronavirus scare, huge crowds gathering in NYC's Chinatown for ceremony ahead of annual #LunarNewYear parade. Chants of "be strong Wuhan!"
If you are staying away, you are missing out!” —Mark D Levin, Chair of New York City Council health committee, Feb 9, 2020.

Notice the blame goes on the Communist China Party/government, not the folks of Chinese ancestry. The Commie Bastards purposely and knowingly spread the Wuhan Virus to the world. It is an attack on our country that has done far worse than the USSR ever did or could do.

“Be strong Wuhan” chants the NYC health officials. Being PC is more important than being right. People died, Health officials lied.

So, the two major epicenters of the world outside China are Italy and NYC. What do they have in common?

I quit using ‘you are what you eat’ several decades ago. I think the slightly more accurate saying is “you are what you digest”. Ask someone you know with celiac disease, or Crohn’s, which of the two sentences is more accurate.

Same for the brain. You are what you read (see, feel, smell, taste…)? Not so. You are what you understand logically, using all of your inputs. I always liked the movie “Short Circuit”. Number 5 wanted more and more input. To what end? It was only when he taught himself the meaning of the word “disassemble” that he truly put together his understanding of reality. Seems those on the left are missing this key part of digesting their inputs.

Side note - as stated in many places, SJW thinking has suddenly receded, giving way to more important realities. Also, no school shootings in the last month. Restricting those 2A rights must be doing its job.

2nd side note – ‘disassemble’ was one of the few words defined in “Reality’s Notebook” from so long ago.

Gun laws and lack of them.

It's interesting to compare the various states and view them as experimental labs. Right next door to each other:

California = insane number of gun laws and double insane number of knife laws.
Arizona = very very few gun laws, no concealed carry license needed, no knife laws at all

similar amount of urbanization per capita, similar demographics, California has a higher average income.

California has higher gun murder rates. (3.3 vs 2.5 per 100k in 2015)

I suppose a more accurate number could be generated by dividing cost into deaths. Is a person worth $2M? Dunno. Especially if it's common instead of rare.

The tricky thing of course is to ride that line between killing a ton of people due to disease and killing a ton of people due to economic collapse. It'll be interesting to see how the Swedes turn out given their lack of interest. Maybe it's the right answer.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was blasted on social media Friday for her swipe against President Trump amid the growing coronavirus outbreak within the U.S.

"He did promise 'America First,'" Clinton wrote, referring to one of the president's oft-repeated campaign slogans.

Her tweet was slammed by critics across Twitter.

"Delete your account. This isn’t the time. This can’t be the new normal, where American tragedy is applauded for the sake of political opportunism," Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, wrote.

"This sort of vicious celebratory tone about Americans getting sick & dying during a deadly global pandemic is just appalling," Washington Examiner reporter Jerry Dunleavy reacted.

"Hillary Clinton touting figures that are a result of Chinese disinformation to dunk on America and sick Americans is a pretty good reminder why she lost in 2016," National Republican Senatorial Committee senior advisor Matt Whitlock said.

As local and state officials across the land cry out for more ventilators, another cry has flown under the radar: “We don’t need more ventilators, we need MORE technicians to run them. We need more respiratory therapists!”—from a nurse in CA.

Seems the ventilators are a bit more complex than making face masks. Yes, a doctor or some nurses could be qualified to run them, but not all. Ventilators require training because if you do it wrong (like too much pressure for the individual patient, for example), the results can and have been deadly. Even monitoring the machines requires training.

I just hope that if I am on a ventilator, the person running it is not a new hire aide or technician who had a two hour training session yesterday. There are simply not enough medical technicians or respiratory theorists to run the machines. Oh my.
Remember when AOC got the workers at Wayfair to walk off the job and refuse to make beds for the Detention centers at the border? The Processing Centers were literally overrun, filled way beyond max capacity, and people were sleeping on the floors because of lack of beds for our alyssum seekers. ICE needed the beds for the immigrants, yet AOC’s demands were to deprive them of such needed basics. Screw that Jacobin. Anyway, heard this and it helps me understand the face of the demonic party:

New York destroyed 300 hospital beds in warehouse storage.’

On the other hand the administration is pulsing the system to meet the challenges -

Clint Phillips, the CEO of telehealth company Medici, told Breitbart News Saturday that President Donald Trump’s telehealth reform has given 100 million Americans access to virtual care.

The Trump administration expanded Medicare telehealth coverage that will enable beneficiaries to receive a broader range of healthcare services from their doctors. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approved a waiver that temporarily pays clinicians to provide telehealth services for beneficiaries. Medicaid recipients could receive access to the plan if a state government would approve the reform.

an interesting sub-story in all this (courtesy of Drudge)

"The U.S. Tried to Build a New Fleet of Ventilators. The Mission Failed.
As the coronavirus spreads, the collapse of the project helps explain America’s acute shortage."
"Thirteen years ago, a group of U.S. public health officials came up with a plan to address what they regarded as one of the medical system’s crucial vulnerabilities: a shortage of ventilators.

The breathing-assistance machines tended to be bulky, expensive and limited in number. The plan was to build a large fleet of inexpensive portable devices to deploy in a flu pandemic or another crisis.

Money was budgeted. A federal contract was signed. Work got underway.

And then things suddenly veered off course. A multibillion-dollar maker of medical devices bought the small California company that had been hired to design the new machines. The project ultimately produced zero ventilators."
"In 2014, with no ventilators having been delivered to the government, Covidien executives told officials at the biomedical research agency that they wanted to get out of the contract, according to three former federal officials. The executives complained that it was not sufficiently profitable for the company."

Somehow Trump's hand was in this I bet. Maybe a time machine.

It's funny how as a general rule states do most of the planning and carrying out for emergencies, but somehow the federal government is always at fault regardless of ruling party. That usually works if your problem is local, even in incredibly corrupt areas like New Orleans or a Chicago or Atlanta, but it sure runs out of gas in a national emergency.

If nothing else, this is probably all a good lesson in how poorly the feds would do in that other planned for enterprise, a nuclear exchange. All the planning and FEMA meetings and military exercises would probably just dissolve in a pile of crazy if it were to ever come to pass.

Bill Tozer

Pandemic Through the Eyes of a Globalist

“As the disease spread around Asia and then the world, however, the news focus gradually shifted, so that now many are questioning the wisdom of having so unthinkingly globalized everything and made so many industries – including the medical industry – dependent on a place like the People’s Republic of China. “What is it like to shoot oneself in the foot?” is yet another question that has been bubbling up uncomfortably these past few weeks.

Outsourcing the medical equipment and pharmaceutical supply chain to a hostile communist dictatorship with perhaps the worst public health record on the planet is the equivalent of the Army Corps of Engineers’ having put the emergency generators for the storm pumps at the bottoms of the levees, where they would be the first to flood during a hurricane. But globalists, like government engineers, are incapable of learning from mistakes. In fact, in their minds, disasters serve perversely to confirm the advisability of their follies. Which leads normal people to wonder, “What is going on in the globalist’s mind?”

What, in other words, is it like to be a globalist? This is a question worth asking, because the answer will determine very much in the months and years ahead. Unless we can figure out how the globalist looks at the world, we will continue to be at his mercy, and will continue to face pandemics and crises that are the precipitate of his ideology. We have got to understand who these people are who have taken over our every doing, our every coming and going. Otherwise, we will keep getting done in by them.”

odds 'n ends 1.

"Hundreds of thousands of Chinese mouth masks have been recalled from Dutch hospitals"
"A large part of the mouth masks that the Dutch government has imported from China is unsound. Because the masks were already distributed to hospitals, the Ministry of Health held a recall.

This concerns almost half of a batch of 1.3 million so-called FFP2 masks, 600,000 pieces. Healthcare providers use it to treat critically ill patients with Covid infection. Faulty masks put doctors and nurses at risk.

The masks have been rejected because they do not meet the safety requirements. They do not fit well on the face or have membranes that do not function properly, the very fine filters that have to stop virus particles."

I don't trust how up-to-date their numbers are, but got some small satisfaction in how the county jumped the gun as it is somewhat attached to an epicenter. Now, hopefully the small hospital and a bunch of Bay Aryans in vacation houses don't bring it all crashing down.

It should be interesting to watch all of these folks dealing with what is probably their first ever emergency. Like Lincoln with McClellan, a lot of people are going to need firing at the end of the day, but given the oddities of large organizations I doubt it happens.

Since most LIBS are full of 💩 send the one you know this.
It will help take a "load" off their mind.
