Steve,

The Dem proposals I have seen require a force of 100,000 testers going out testing millions. That alone would take a couple months to launch. Besides, with all the bad tests out there we have been relying on, we are just starting to get pur hands on tests with 90% accuracy as they are being developed. One in ten bad. Before that and recently, the tests were 70% accurate, before that when the Chinese Virus was unleashed on the innocent across the globe, some tests were only 50% reliable.

I think it is best to wait for the new test that is 99% accurate and tests for antibodies as well...according to the manufactures boast. Anti-bodies is where its at. Under 5 years old? Got a 0.0014 chance of dying from the Kung Flu. Under 50 and healthy? 0.02 chance. As mentioned before in one study, 7 out of 8 adults who tested positive had no idea that had it or showed any symptons.

Antibody testing is where it is at. Since I have not been tested, i just assume I have it and act according for others sake. Or, I assume others have the Plague and I act accordingly.

What would Biden do differently? Stupid question. Took him til April 4th to decide that travel restrictions with China and Europe was a good idea, and necessary. So, its up to Trump to get 'er done cause nobody else can or will. Thats a good thing. Government bureaus are like turning an aircraft carrier around. They ain't nimble or agile.

I think your missing the point of Frisch's intransigence... he's not trying to facilitate getting people back to work, he's playing Lucy holding the football for Charlie Brown. It's a heads I win, tails you lose proposition for Frisch who absolutely does not want to lose the Presidency a'gin to a reprobate like Trump.

If aliens (the from outer space kind) arrived with a guaranteed overnight cure, he's come up with another Sysiphean task for Trump to perform.

Now, I don't particularly like the idea of another four years of Trump but just on the replacing of the Notorious RBG with another Jeffersonian Textualist like Justice Gorsuch would make it more than worthwhile.

I can hear the screams from here.

Gregory

make that "I think you're..." and my last comment is flawless...

Steven Frisch

"Bullshit, Mr. Frisch. At the beginning of March, the DEM leadership were still complaining about Trump's actions being racist and xenophobic, and De Blasio was doing his own version of Hug a Chinese Day with Italians."

Posted by: Gregory | 10 May 2020 at 04:45 PM

That may be true to idiots here who only look at right wing media, but inside the administrations and at CDC and NIAID the experts were calling for dramatically scaling up production of tests and PPE. Instead Orange Nero fiddled.

Steven Frisch

"We only need the tests that are required to provide a diagnosis for new cases of suspected infection. We got that now."
Posted by: Gregory | 10 May 2020 at 04:53 PM

Another patently false statement. We have millions of front line at risk workers who need to be tested regularly; we have millions of non front line workers who want to go back to work and part of the recommended protocol for going back to work is access to regular testing; and finally there are entire fields where reopening and scaling up to pre-Covid 19 numbers is going to be dependent upon testing, like child care, schools, manufacturing, etc.

The most important point is that there is a a behavioral economics driver here: in order for people to go back to behaviors like sending their kids to school, going to a concert or ball game, going to the mall, they need to believe that they and their families are safe...period.

Steven Frisch

"I think your missing the point of Frisch's intransigence..."

Yes, you are missing the point of my post...80,000 dead...likely 250,000 in 3 months, and under the current lack of fucking plan from our current incompetent President, there is actually right now no end in sight.

A nation that was once the arsenal of democracy can't even produce masks, gloves, face shields and tests, or even organize 100,000 people to do contact racing.

If Trump came out and started talking 1,000,000 dead by the end of 2020 you would all just go along with it and normalize his insanity like a bunch of lemmings.

It seems like there is no bullshit line from this President you guys would not swallow.

Todd Juvinall

Still in your basement with the five-year old scotch I see Frisch.

Mary Wanna

When Trump said, "anyone who wants a test can get one", he must have been referring to what some aide told him about the availability of testing in the White House. Trump and Crew get tested all the time - but they won't wear masks.

Barry Pruett

It is a virus. People are going to die. It could have been me, could have been my wife, or could have been my mother-in-law. This whole thing is crazy. Over 10,000 deaths from H1N1. Tens of thousands die from flu annually. We can't shut down the economy every time we have a chance of getting sick. That is liberal lunacy. Take care of yourself. If you are at risk stay home, so that those of us who aren't at risk can take care of you. We don't need government to tell force us. We are good at taking care of each other already.

scenes

Well now, here's an opportunity. Mr. Frisch, taking a break from doing God's work helping all the businesses do business things in a very businesslike manner sez:

"Yes, you are missing the point of my post...80,000 dead...likely 250,000 in 3 months"

While George R., in late April said:

"501c3 bets to co-locate money and mouth. RR’s commenters have over the years made assertions and predictions with such deeply held convictions as to draw more than a smile from the rest of us. So here’s a proposal (again) – offer odds and a material dollar bet that your measurable assertion will come true. "

Since Steve F. appears to not only be a public policy expert, but also has deep knowledge of what is going on at the federal level, and is a fine amateur epidemiologist, this looks to be a good opportunity for action.

Mistah Frisch, what are your odds for 250k dead in the US in 3 months? or was the number pulled from somewhere near your cecum?

MaryWanna: " Trump and Crew get tested all the time - but they won't wear masks."

Which of course makes sense, just like someone who spends all day posting about the evils of Trump from a urine-soaked EZ chair probably doesn't need testing.

Stay chipper old son. We might still yet get that high death rate and economic collapse you are hoping for. Just tilt back that fisherman's cap and dream of mass immigration and men-in-dresses.

Not a terrible op-ed. And, by golly, it isn't all about Trump.

https://www.acsh.org/news/2020/04/15/coronavirus-tedros-fauci-and-peril-politicizing-medicine-14717

this line stuck out at me:

"These are the opposing forces squeezing Fauci. Still, he has a third consideration: scientific truth. And the truth is muddled, to put it mildly. For instance, a recent review published in “The Lancet” concluded that school closings are not very effective in slowing the spread of the coronavirus. But it would be political suicide for Fauci to announce that schools should reopen – the biomedical community would revolt against him – and Homo politicus is not suicidal. Fauci has therefore thrown his support behind the biomedical community’s demand for a national lockdown of indefinite length. And, for good measure, he says people should never shake hands again."

George Rebane

Re Fauci’s ‘lockdown until C19 gone’ counsel. Things become really simple in the affairs of Man when the utility that drives your decisions has only one factor, no pesky tradeoffs to consider; in Fauci’s case it’s just the number of C19 deaths. But that causes people like him to see only as far as their nose, and be very happy with the resulting scenery. The Left loves him for it because they know that this will wreak havoc with the economy and kill even more people, thereby maximizing their own utility, as shown above.

Oh Steve, from the day Trump was elected, Hilary Hodgepodge and the rest of your gang stated thousands of times in a thousand ways that “they don’t feel safe.” My Safe Place does not feel save and may never feel save again. How can I date or think of myself when all my friends are hurting and they don’t feel save! They are scared. They live in fear and have to look over their shoulders to see if someone they once trusted voted for Trump. It changed everything!” Mommie, I am scared, I don’t feel safe!” Make it go away.

Well, not all people refuse to go outside until it is safe. The only constant if life is change.

They feel safe. I guess the Leftinistas would normally say those Dregs of Society all deserve to die.....but CO is a Blue State, so they don’t.

Bottomline: If anyone does not feel safe (a requirement), then by all means do not go outside. Stay away from the fog...

So it appears the the lockdown is in place to eradicate the disease rather than to enable hospitals to deal with it. Good luck on that one.

I ran into this from a couple of days ago:

https://www.dailynews.com/2020/05/07/california-governor-allows-some-retail-reopening-with-limits/
"To move at a quicker clip, counties must attest to the state that they’ve had no more than one case per 10,000 people in the last 14 days and no COVID-19 related deaths during the same period, explained Dr. Mark Ghaly, secretary of California Health and Human Services."

Given the natural tendency to overstate CCP-19 caused deaths, just how long are they planning on keeping LA county closed? They might as well keep it closed until they don't have any 'normal' flu case deaths for two weeks. I see problems in the future here.

All doctors, including Dr. F, who have taken the Hippocratic Oath, want to see no one die. It’s a big reason end of life care is so expensive. The patient is to remain alive and all costs. Do everything to keep them from dying. Make sure no one gets ill.

That’s the way doctors and medical experts and researchers see things. They are not foreign policy experts, economists, seasoned National Security folks, Treasury officials, or the ones who have to have the final say. We elected the one who has the final say. If the military makes the final decisions, we call that a military junta. If medical people run the show, we call that .....what?

So, Steve is in the guarantee safety first mode. He should have been a doctor. As our Q of L
disintegrated into the abyss in just 60 shorts days, there are those who want safety first, then talk about the other stuff.

As Scenes pointed out, the deal was to soften the curve, not eliminate it. Spread it out. Now, the goalposts are moving....again. Elimination of the steep curve is no longer the goal.
——
Well there is always a silver lining. Yesterday I was going through some old stuff (boxed for years since the move and lo and behold behind a half empty jug of Downey fabric softener was a new, in the package, one NIOSH approved N-95 mask. I must have been given the mask during an Hantavirus safety course when there was that outbreak in New Mexico...and tossed it some box to be never seen again until now. Much more comfortable (softer and cooler) than the painters’s masks I thought I had in the sandpaper/refinishing box.

So, the government does not have to buy me a mask and neither do I. I have my own, thank you very much. But, who wants to wear that around the yard? Not me. I will wear it when I go to the next MLB game and sit next to a drunken fan for 2-3 hours.

Well, football is a contact sport. In baseball, how do you practice safe distancing when you got a man on first and a pitcher know for picking off runners? And what about behind the plate? Gives new meaning to “Kill the Ump!”

In the old days, I avoided ‘The Black Hole’ Oakland Coliseum because it wasn’t safe in the parking lot if the Raiders lost...and they lost a lot.

This is the kind of crap from lamestream like reuters. We know that the commercial (restaurant, schools, export) supply chain can not really pivot to retail because of the massively different packaging.

We know the stores are doing more of their own end of the line butchering commercial meat packs down to consumer packaging.

Yet here they are making a thing about exports continuing to china (who we made commit to large purchases) that don't really have anything to do with what's in your grocers cases.

It isn't a matter of "can't", its a measure of doesn't (remember when you traveled to China to get cheaply made Chinese lighting products for SBC projects?) or a matter of "say what?" to now your demand for 100,000 folks to do "contact tracing" to begin with. What would the maximum size of the army of Tracers be?

You might want to increase the powers of the designated contact tracers to empower them to get cooperation from the people who don't trust you. A few doors might need breaking down, cells to keep the uncooperative where they get put until the test results come back in a few days. Spiffy new uniforms for the Testing Safety Administration whiteshirt brigades.

re: "contact tracing"

Guess o' the day. Yer gonna start hearing more and more about it. People just know that it's good and that it'll save lives (they're not sure quite how many or why) and that Trump didn't do enough of it in March or January or something.

It'll be the June version of 'we gotta do more tests why weren't there enough tests'.

Why didn't Trump start contact tracing last October? That bastard. If we could just have contact tracing, we could get the US death rate down to the one in France.

Hey, the first week of the new testing centers is past, and the County CoV page has finally been updated...
... with the new centers in addition to what the hospital had going and I think an odd Quest site or two...

They managed to run a total of about 400 additional tests and with that, the numbers are now...

No change. It's still 40 recoveries, 1 death, no active cases.

“This is not only a big victory for Mr. Manke, but also for other small businesses,” she said.

“Who else will open their doors?”

The state Attorney General lost in its effort to obtain a temporary restraining order, NBC 25 reported.

The AG said:

The Attorney General’s court action, filed on behalf of MDHHS, seeks to enforce the MDHHS Director’s Public Health Order that deemed Mr. Manke’s business an imminent danger to public health in light of the COVID 19 pandemic and directs him to immediately cease operations at his barbershop. The State is seeking to schedule a hearing as soon as possible.
The AG asserted Manke’s open business presents “clear public health dangers”. "

So, of the possible additional 2000 tests the county could have done, 396 were performed and none of them were positive for the SARS du jour.
