Perhaps all he means is that if 51% of the people decide a thing, the other 49% should just shut up and do it...unless the 'thing' isn't an RL Crabb kind of 'thing'. In any case, I don't sweat the concepts generated by local cartoonists. There's never any beef there, just view it as a sentence in a barroom conversation.

Question. How partisan are high functioning ethnonations? Do they really have deep policy arguments or would an outsider simply be mystified? One of the Icelandic scandals o' the day is that someone snuck a microphone into a bar, recorded some MPs uttering abelistsexist things, ran to the newspaper. Sign of the times but not much of an issue.

If you have the long view, it's all just a matter of large group evolution. If your system sucks, somebody else shows up to steal all the gold and pretty women. Systems that really suck require worldwide domination in order to remove external threats (see: Marx, Karl Heinrich)

George Rebane

scenes 1208pm - I don't consider Bob's viewpoint as being locally restricted, but one embraced by many (most?) nationwide. Rodney King's 'Why can't we all just get along?' still echoes today. Political partisanship becomes more important, the more diverse we are culturally. Small culturally cohesive populations, as your Icelandics, have a totally different set of differences that they consider important and that may make us yawn. When we get right down to it, how much diversity in its various dimensions can a population profitably tolerate under one kind of governance that is supposed to be all things to all, and may wind up be a no-thing to everyone? We are now trying something that no nation-state has been able to maintain successfully over a large, highly multi-cultural population. Examples of failure in such attempts abound - e.g. USSR, China, Iraq, South Africa, India, ... .

scenes

"Political partisanship becomes more important, the more diverse we are culturally."

I'd say that the more diverse we are culturally, the more force the ruling class has to apply to keep the lid on. Mass partisanship strikes me as something that is a luxury of a people who mostly agree.

That isn't to say you couldn't have partisan/coalition groups within the ruling class. Roman political life back in the day would make your head spin.

"We are now trying something that no nation-state has been able to maintain successfully over a large, highly multi-cultural population."

...and I fully expect it to either fail or construct an increasingly overbearing central government. Of course, they all fail in the end.

Honestly, I'd say that the concept of mass voting is still on thin ice. Hard to say where you end up given that all of the early attempts at government were based on more of a logic of scarcity.

‘Politico’s Ben Shapiro Freakout Is A Perfect Illustration Of A Much Bigger Problem’
The left's 'both sides' media critique is extremely dangerous both because it's deeply flawed and because it's fashionable in corporate media circles

“It’s natural, of course, for progressives to have an unfavorable perspective of Shapiro and a favorable one of Hayes. When the corporate press is run by domineering millennial journalists absolutely convinced of the progressive-or-bigot binary, that’s how you get the discord at Politico. When decent people read coverage that implies they’re bigots, well, that’s how you get Donald Trump. And that’s how people radicalize.

A tweet Shapiro posted amidst the uproar captures the dynamic impeccably. He wrote:

“My point: conservatives believe that Leftists want to ostracize them as evil, and then shut them down
Politico staff: conservatives ought to be ostracized as evil and then shut down”

https://thefederalist.com/2021/01/15/politicos-ben-shapiro-freakout-is-a-perfect-illustration-of-a-much-bigger-problem/

Interesting that it was Politico’s NEWS DIVISION that had the total freakout breakdown on steroids because Shapiro guest authored the site’s Playbook newsletter. Politico’s Editorial Division did not go ape shit over it.

I usually don't try to explain my scribbles, but folks over here seem to be especially dense, so I'll try...
If you look at the last panel in the series, you will notice the ass and the elephant (portrayed here by Covid-related unemployed actors) fighting over the American flag, both of them obsessed with owning it all for themselves.
Far from Mr. Scenes' observation that "51% decide a thing and 49% should just shut up and do it," this frame is a denouncement of the practice, and my character (also played by an actor, in this instance, Billy Bob Thornton) longs for a time long past when Democrats and Republicans still had an ounce of respect for each other and fashioned legislation that reflected these values.
If we do agree on any point, it's that it is unlikely such cooperation will exist again, at least in this generation. The left is far too entrenched in dithering over which race and/or gender is more oppressed, while the right has wandered into a quasi-religious stupor fueled by some comedian calling him or herself "Q".
I don't have to make up stories in this sorry excuse for reality. This country has become a badly written parody of the one I grew up in.

lol. Hang on a minute. Should the two fight over the flag, or should the slightly weaker one give it up? We are desperate to know. Maybe one of the figures should hold the flag and let the other one touch it now and again or maybe there should be another animal stick figure that wants to get it's own flag or something. Maybe we could design a flag with two flag poles and draw it and then we could take selfies with the double flag pole.

So many possibilities.

" This country has become a badly written parody of the one I grew up in."

The average person from 1970 would be viewed as a Nazi by a modern Democrat. They'd hang Robert Crumb on the nearest lamppost.

On a related topic, it's funny how fast a population can be re-programmed. Map of Germany showing religious affiliation, red colors show 'no religious belief' (blue = Protestant, green = Catholic). I suppose it was less sudden than what happened in East Prussia.

RL 246pm - I do regret that you find expanding on your statements of belief a frustrating exercise. I and my ilk find that kind of discourse to be the sum and substance cum foundation of a civil society - perhaps yet another difference between us. Nevertheless and to the point, I would like to know how you came to the conclusion that the Republican elephant wants to dominate the donkey and become the political monopolist of the country. Statements of glee from Democrats anticipating the total demise of Republicanism due to Trump abound. The Left has made no secret of its desire to rule the world, and re-educate those of us remaining deplorables who missed going through the decades of socialist groupthink education that has given us our current cohort of critical thinkers.

Crabby, folks "over here" really aren't particularly dense, and the hard left majoritarians really do think that if they get 51% of the vote, everyone else needs to STFU.

No, Jason, not one soul here would inhale suddenly with the mouth open, out of pain or astonishment (gasp) to having black people becoming our neighbors. Welcome mat is out.

Found this to be a good article the other day. It is submitted here for your consideration because of the local community angle.

‘Neighborhood Stands Between Us and Totalitarianism‘

We live in a time where many of our traditions and cultural associations are quickly vanishing. Politicians and bureaucrats have stripped them from us in the name of keeping us safe, telling us to stay at home, and to avoid church, school, and family gatherings. We accept these dictates, believing that we will regain our cultural associations and traditions sometime in the future. But will we? Nisbet suggests that eliminating these is one of the first steps in our enslavement to a totalitarian government:

“Totalitarianism has been well described as the ultimate invasion of human privacy. But this invasion of privacy is possible only after the social contexts of privacy—family, church, association—have been atomized. The political enslavement of man requires the emancipation of man from all the authorities and memberships….
Thus, the fact that the neighborhood is seeing something of a resurgence during these strange times offers hope that the trend toward totalitarianism will not become completely entrenched. As long as some form of association exists, where individuals can get together and talk about their lives and ideas, it is much harder for isolation to set in and for individuals to easily capitulate to the whims of a few totalitarian-minded elites.”.......

.....“ The neighborhood is making a comeback. Hold on to it while you can. It may be the last remaining thing standing between average citizens like ourselves and the totalitarians who seek to enslave us.”

Now, who has the power to tell anyone not to own or display a bit of cloth colored in a particular way? Why should they have that power? In fact, why wouldn't you want to see who has particularly ugly colored bits of cloth they want to wave?

The actual crime is the City of Portland's de facto encouragement of this behavior. It's a beautiful example of that sort of state sponsored terrorism where there's a figleaf of plausible deniability. You can argue that the Capitol Police inviting in Buffalo Horn Guy and Friends is another example. Of course, there's a heckuva lot more Team Blue kinetic energy than Team Red, at least until they start running into people with real anger management issues.

Since Powell's, with some cowardice (I can't blame them given the lack of law enforcement) won't carry Andy Ngo's book in bricks 'n mortar land, it would be amusing to order it with in-store pickup. Of course, you'd still have to make it by Team Antifa's militia checkpoint.

"‘The Death of Political Cartooning—And Why It Matters’

https://quillette.com/2021/01/07/the-death-of-political-cartooning-and-why-it-matters/"

I was thinking about that and I'll posit that it doesn't matter.

It seems to me that traditional political cartooning is dying. The right mix of draftsmanship, ability to caricature, and a good gag (just true/cruel enough to be funny) is not a thing that makes it into print (traditional political cartoons or not), but the mantle has been taken up by the hoi polloi.

You're not going to see good drawing so much anymore, and gags can make up for it (see: Adams, Scott), but the 'meme' has taken it's place. Jus' reg'lar folks can invent their own saying or joke and it's replicated a million times over. These lack in artistry but benefit from the use of stock characters, sort of like a situation comedy's built-in joke of a reoccuring bit part.

It takes more skill to do these:
https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/rs-29121-44225_lg.jpg?w=428
https://i0.wp.com/d24fkeqntp1r7r.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/05023638/Picture97.png

but perhaps the masses can run with the concept.

The tricky part is to avoid the modern tendency to censor on the large scale. At this point we'll have to go back to handbills.

And yet the New Deal saved capitalism from itself by reforming it, rebuilt the nation, put millions of people to work, began to prepare the nation for war, laid the foundation for a wartime controlled economy that out produced literally every other allied nation in the world combined by the end of WWII, and triggered the greatest post war economic expansion in modern history....and Trotsky (in the lower left corner) never took over, the Constitution did not get "junked," and a the President did not become a dictator. In fact we thrived in the post war world.

I could fit what you know about economics and economic history in a thimble Fish.

What is not difficult to know is that Robert McCormick's Chicago Tribune, which originally published this cartoon, was an adherent of Hoover's economic policy of restraining the use of government and government spending to combat the depression, relative to the incredible scale of the need to intervene at the time.(Even though Hoover did expand spending.)

What is equally obvious is that FDR's Keynesian policy of intervention with government spending, and specifically using that intervention to build infrastructure that would create lasting positive economic externalities, worked.

What is doubly equally obvious is that the ignorant here continue to mimic the ideas of Robert McCormick....friggin' forever...even when it was obvious that what they foretold never occurred. Heaven's Gate indeed.

FDR didn't 'get us through' the depression, he prolonged it. But the millionaires did just fine, so there's that. Too damn bad about the middle class.
And then we had a dandy war. Got rid of (permanently) a lot of the formerly unemployed and cranked up the factories (and fed debt).
Afterwards America was left standing as the only major industrial power not left in ruins.
So - how is this now going to play out? The Dems are openly planning to send the debt to the moon. They've already admitted they don't even care how to pay for all the goodies. With no WWIII and more nations than ever capable of competing for the same markets as the US for their industrial output, there exists no way to pay down the debt.
As ever, the super wealthy will do well and will pack off for greener pastures once our nation falls into financial ruin.

"FDR didn't 'get us through' the depression, he prolonged it. "

I figger that he prolonged it or shortened it or made it stay the same.

If you look at Picketty's paper on income inequality (and others...it's on sci-hub), it's fairly obvious that not much happened until, oddly, 1941. It does seem to me that there's a dearth of interest in comparing the US depression with those in other countries.

Lotsa other things happening back in the day. For one thing, that's an era when there was a huge change in lifestyle and technology. People want their simple causalities though.

Maybe the main problem was applying the word 'science' to 'social science'.

Steve F. @ 12:15 pm.

Exactly my point, Mr. Frish. Here we...er....you are on any given Sunday arguing about a 1934 political cartoon drawn during the Great Depression and, of course, the Dust Bowl. That indeed shows that political cartoons can stand the test of time. You couldn’t get that cartoon pass through the anti-Semitic NYT, Wa Compost, The Huff-n-Puff Menopausal Post, LA Times, or even the AP in today’s world.
Ok, the LA Times is, writing some good investigative reporting lately, targeting Pretty Boy Airhead Gavin Newsome and not treating him not so very nice now that Gavin does not have the luxury to blame all his gross failures on Trump. Remove Trump, and the Governor has no clothes. A most ugly sight. Somebody cover that man up with a sheet or Chinese flag, ASAP. Maybe assign Corn Pop by the pool to cover Gavin up. Corn Pop is one bad dude and although it is a dirty job, someone has to do it. Gross. Anyway.....you made my point. Political cartoons stand the test of tIme, but now they are being relegated to the dustbin of history.

If the Leftinistas could get their hands on that political cartoon, it would be book burning time lickety split. Plus a few smashed windows before the Political Cartoon historical library is burned to the ground and the museum’s director forced to resign and confess her sins...then erased for life. And that’s No Malarky, man.
It’s a good thing the cartoonist is dead. I shudder think what the illiberals would do to his wife home alone with the grandkids. Probably do what the rioters and peaceful lowlives did this summer. Barricade the police station doors shut, then torch the place with the “Pigs“ inside. Fry them like bacon. “What do we want? Dead cops! When do we want it? Now!!”

What a bunch of pinkies, for sure. Luckily, there are still some political cartoonist who will not bow the knee to the angry confused and delusional wingnuts with male peckers who think they are are female...and demand we celebrate their mental illness. Or the SJW Commie Bastards who know that the only thing that stands in their way is the Constitution....and they do not like that document one bit.

FDR took office in 1933 with unemployment over 25%. His SecTreas Morgenthau went hat in hand to Congress in 1939 with unemployment unchanged, and said that the administration had tried everything that had NOT worked and was open to any and all suggestions going forward. The only plan FDR had for the economy was WW2. In the meantime he grew a government with an alarmingly seditious fifth column in place by the time the war started. Our governments inefficiency and growth never looked back - we're still in the clutches of those who firmly believe that government can spend our money for a greater good than can the private sector. Save for an extremely limited number of functions, government is the least efficient provider of goods and services for its citizens. The more it does, the more misery it creates. All this has been outlined and discussed for years in these pages.

Shouldn't all op-eds written by the young'uns these days include a full-disclosure of how much the author still owes in student debt? It would make it a lot easier to push past the baffle-gab if it all boils down to cheer-leading for the pol that promises to pay off student loans.

'Offering a ‘return to normalcy,’ Biden pledges troop surges in Iraq and Afghanistan'
“We’re not doing any of this troop withdrawal malarkey."

https://www.duffelblog.com/p/in-return-to-normalcy-biden-prepares

And to think I was just 12 hours ago I was going to post an article that said that our troops in Iraq and Afganistan have been reduced to 2,500 troops in each country respectively, one of which is the lowest number of US troops in 20 friggin years.

Say Goodbye to troop withdraws and Hello to the Party of War. Trump and us Dregs of Society proudly (and thankfully) point to the fact that Trump is the first POTUS who has avoided getting the US entangled in some foreign war since Jimmy the Peanut Farmer.

Here comes the neo-coms licking their chops in orgasmic anticiation of ramping up for War.

Next up: funding Hezbollah via Iran. Sad. Don't they realize that Iran's target is NOT Israel (the little Satan) but the USA, the BIG Satin? Apparently not.

If Trump proved one thing, it is thst sanctions work. Even our Western European allies and theit foreign ministers have begrudgingly admitted publicly that Trump's policy concerning Iran has worked.
Oh course John Kerry and the party of beating the drums of war would disagree.

Lets go backwards and do what did not work. Listen to France instead. They have such a good record concerning matters of war that the joke goes something like this:

Q: How many French Generals does it take to successfully defend Paris?

A: Nobody knows.

scenes

"'Offering a ‘return to normalcy,’ Biden pledges troop surges in Iraq and Afghanistan'
“We’re not doing any of this troop withdrawal malarkey.""

Methinks it's a joke website, but I don't doubt it could happen. No point in buying trouble though. It might be a while before the War Party swings into action as there's a lot of revenge and a lot of payoffs for Harris to carry out. Getting another 11 million Democratic voters signed up will take a few minutes.

I was thinking about DonB's 7:26PM concerning the school principal who dared criticize The Party's organized censorship. It's funny how the same goals produce the same solution. In the article, one Barton Thorne is being investigated by Michael Lowe, with the district’s "Office of Equity and Access". You can call it something else, but a Political Commissar can be spotted a mile away.

I wish I had real visibility into the modern Army. What with the 25,000+ troops in place to provide the spectacle of an El Presidente succession, and just wait until Biden starts wearing his first row of medals, evidently there's a need for the FBI to politically vet the whole lot.

It's hard to avoid the conclusion that you'll see an entire political officer class slotted into place with fast increases in rank. I'm 99% sure that the noncoms will start getting their lockers searched for Trump stickers. No promotions for you. Service members will be heavily encouraged to inform on their co-workers. You can imagine how combat arms will be decimated.

Historically we've seen all this before, so buckle up in your own way.

Hoover's mistake was not providing enough liquidity in a timely manner to the nation's credit institutions when the highly leveraged loans (e.g. buying stocks on thin margins) of the 'roaring 20s' came due. God you’re stupid.....

Bill Tozer

Hoover? Yes, there were outhouses marked as Hoover Camps back in the day.

Hoover believed that for government to introduce passing out food during lean times (todays food stamps) was a slippery slope that the Federal Government should not be involved in. Thus, he had the Red Cross and other similar organizations pass out packets of seeds.

When 17,000 World War I vets occupied Washington DC and encamped there demanding the Government give there WWI service certificates prematurely (now) instead of waiting for the bonus checks authorized by Congress post-war to be paid on 1945, things got ugly.

“Many of the war veterans had been out of work since the beginning of the Great Depression. The World War Adjusted Compensation Act of 1924 had awarded them bonuses in the form of certificates they could not redeem until 1945. Each certificate, issued to a qualified veteran soldier, bore a face value equal to the soldier's promised payment with compound interest. The principal demand of the Bonus Army was the immediate cash payment of their certificates.

On July 28, 1932, U.S. Attorney General William D. Mitchell ordered the veterans removed from all government property. Washington police met with resistance, shot at the protestors, and two veterans were wounded and later died. President Herbert Hoover then ordered the U.S. Army to clear the marchers' campsite. Army Chief of Staff General Douglas MacArthur commanded a contingent of infantry and cavalry, supported by six tanks. The Bonus Army marchers with their wives and children were driven out, and their shelters and belongings burned.”

(more.....just to name names). “ At 1:40 pm MacArthur ordered General Perry Miles to assemble troops on the Ellipse immediately south of the White House. Within the hour the 3rd Cavalry led by Patton, then a Major, crossed the Memorial Bridge, with the 12th Infantry arriving by steamer about an hour later. At 4 pm Miles told MacArthur that the troops were ready, and MacArthur (like Eisenhower, by now in service uniform), said that Hoover wanted him "on hand" to "take the rap if ..."[citation needed]

Although the troops were ready, Hoover twice sent instructions to MacArthur not to cross the Anacostia bridge that night, both of which were ignored. Shortly after 9 pm, MacArthur ordered Miles to cross the bridge and evict the Bonus Army from its encampment.[27]

At 4:45 pm. commanded by General Douglas MacArthur, the 12th Infantry Regiment, Fort Howard, Maryland, and the 3rd Cavalry Regiment, supported by six M1917 light tanks commanded by Maj. George S. Patton, formed in Pennsylvania Avenue while thousands of civil service employees left work to line the street and watch. The Bonus Marchers, believing the troops were marching in their honor, cheered the troops until Patton ordered[citation needed] the cavalry to charge them, which prompted the spectators to yell, "Shame! Shame!"[citation needed]

Shacks that members of the Bonus Army erected on the Anacostia Flats burning after its confrontation with the army.
After the cavalry charged, the infantry, with fixed bayonets and tear gas (adamsite, an arsenical vomiting agent) entered the camps, evicting veterans, families, and camp followers. The veterans fled across the Anacostia River to their largest camp, and Hoover ordered the assault stopped. MacArthur chose to ignore the president and ordered a new attack, claiming that the Bonus March was an attempt to overthrow the US government. 55 veterans were injured and 135 arrested.[1] A veteran's wife miscarried. When 12-week-old Bernard Myers died in the hospital after being caught in the tear gas attack, a government investigation reported he died of enteritis, and a hospital spokesman said the tear gas "didn't do it any good."[28]

During the military operation, Major Dwight D. Eisenhower, later the 34th president of the United States, served as one of MacArthur's junior aides.[29] Believing it wrong for the Army's highest-ranking officer to lead an action against fellow American war veterans, he strongly advised MacArthur against taking any public role: "I told that dumb son-of-a-bitch not to go down there," he said later. "I told him it was no place for the Chief of Staff."[30] Despite his misgivings, Eisenhower later wrote the Army's official incident report that endorsed MacArthur's conduct.[31]”

BOTTOMLINE: Governor of New York Franklin Roosevelt, when hearing the news, quipped “I just got won the Presidency.”

** side note: FDR himself was opposed to issuing the Bonus Checks in the Presidential campaign in 1932, which he won in a landslide after got blamed for the disastrous handling of the Bonus Camp by MacArthur , who ignored Hoover’s orders and the Great Depression, of course.
FDR vetoed Congress’s Bonus Checks Relief bill in 1936, but Congress overrode his veto.

Those were the days. No food stamps, no unemployment compensation, 25% unemployment, and it was a hard go. Produced tough people, not fat and whinny like today as we are in the middle of an national obesity crisis that will kill hundreds of thousands.

For Punchy:

"The Great Depression created a widespread misconception that market economies are inherently unstable and must be managed by the government to avoid large macreconomic fluctuations, that is, business cycles. This view persists to this day despite the more than 40 years since Milton Friedman and Anna Jacobson Schwartz showed convincingly that the Federal Reserve’s monetary policies were largely to blame for the severity of the Great Depression. In 2002 Ben Bernanke (then a Federal Reserve governor, today the chairman of the Board of Governors) made this startling admission in a speech given in honor of Friedman’s 90th birthday: “I would like to say to Milton and Anna: Regarding the Great Depression, you’re right. Sorry guy, I don't know the vehicle or the owner.

So... under what constitutional principle would you refuse to let him or her show themselves to be a damn fool?

Don @ 5:28 pm

Notice how Nancy flipped from calling them Storm Troopers out guarding the Lincoln Memorial and gassing and beating up innocent peaceful protesters so Trump could have his photo op to.....drumroll please.....to our brave men and women of our National Guard who love our country, lol.

Jason.. Back from Hell already? What, did you escape while they were cleaning your cage, and you flew off like a...well, like a bat out of hades.

Yo Hicks from the Sticks covered with ticks. The bad kind of ticks.

Did you report the offenders to our local police?? Punchy did when Sabo the guerrilla street artist left his mark on a big red stop sign. Oh, Punchy was upset. The artist left a message for the stink-asses to go back to Berekely. Can’t remember if Sabo spelled Berekely right.

Anyway, the ole Buzzard of Broad Street was hotter than a goat’s butt in a pepper patch, carrying on about somebody in the 90’s had a confederate flag flying on a house right in Niverna City....and he done saw it with his own eyeballs...decades ago! Oh the drama. The horror, the horror.

The Punch Meister Was carrying on and on even worse than his meltdown over Melania’s choice of footwear.

Call the police and tell them you are concerned and do not feel safe. Look at the bright side. At least we don’t live in Tennessee of Florida or North Carolina where all the New Yorkers are fleeing to. Who would want to live there now?

Let’s see what the Washington Compost had to say about folks waving the Stars and Bars. “Away, away, away down South in Dixie"

The first rule about Communism here, is you DON'T talk about communism here."
And the TOLLS here are sticking to the memo.
