George Rebane
For some time now a hard-left commenter signing himself as ‘Nevada County Right Wing Watch’ has been visiting these pages and leaving a trail of his intelligence, understanding, and thoughts. He claims to be part of an extensive organization, apparently one of several reported in the news that are doing their best to intimidate and shut down all wrong thought in the country. It’s hard to tell how authentic all this is. But it’s very easy to tell from both the news and as corroborated on this blog, that the communication between the polarized sides is extremely asymmetrical. The Left wants to silence the Right. The Right wants an open forum debate on ideas, happenings, history, economics, etc.
A microcosm of this activity has been recorded in RR’s comment streams for the last 14 years, and in recent years the exchange has become more intense. During this time the leftwingers come here to repeatedly tell us that our views are grossly in error, evil, and that no one cares what we think – and yet they come. All of them appear to think that the conservetarian ideas promoted by me and others are unique, constrained to a tiny group in these foothills, and only represent fringe far-right thought. They have no idea of the existence of the tens of millions of every-day Americans with whom we are ideological soulmates. From the content of their comments, it’s clear they think that if only they could silence RR, then such wrong thinking would be eliminated from the land.
In the following I present a couple of extracted comment threads from recent posts to give readers a clearer picture of the virulence experienced here and, no doubt, elsewhere. We start with the contribution of our ever-vigilant Right Wing Watcher in a comment thread under ‘$15/hr Dumbth on the March’.
Don't wanna hear any more bullshit about the benefits of Californians moving to Texas. The worst statewide disaster in Texas history, orchestrated by the GOP mindless mantra of deregulation and cutting costs. Any Cali residents moving to Texas while the GOP holds every statewide elected seat in that state are MORONS. Idiots. Suckers. Tools. Texas is now a fcking (sic) third world country run by idiots in the GOP.
What a fcking (sic) embarrassment to the good people of Austin and such. A disaster of unimaginable depth, all created by the GOP. One Hundred Percent. You own it boys, your brothers in arms.
Oh and the boys at our regional monitoring site continue to laugh and talk about you, Walt. You are fairly famous in Right Wing Watch circles. Be proud boy, be proud!
Carry on. You are on Candid Camera! Posted by: Nevada County Right Wing Watch | 18 February 2021 at 10:00 PM
To which I replied –
Right Wing Watch 1000pm – There’s no denying it, you guys sure are a scary bunch. The way you keep your eyes on all the nation’s wrong thinkers from your “regional monitoring sites” tells everyone that you have much more in mind than just keeping tabs on us.
But I and, I’m sure others, would be interested to know how you view your organization. Do you see yourselves modeled after Hitler’s extra-governmental Nazi Brown Shirts ready for action in the streets? Or are you more like communist East Germany’s Stasi civilian corps that was organized to keep an eye on fellow citizens and report regularly on their activities? Both were very effective in preventing wrong thought and crushing wrong thinkers.
Please let us know what kind of an organization we now have in America that is regionally structured with “Right Wing Watch circles” manned by eager stalwarts (the “boys”) doing their duty to keep the country on the right track. If we wanted RR to become a leftwing compliant outlet, do you have any literature that would guide us in how we should reformulate our thoughts and expressions so as to blend in to be more like the other progressive blogs hereabouts? Team Biden is contemplating a cabinet level Ministry of Truth to suppress ‘fake news’ and ‘disinformation’, have you been tagged to become their eyes and ears across the land? Posted by: George Rebane | 19 February 2021 at 08:48 AM
Then there’s the thread under ‘Scattershots – 16feb21’ with Chris Peterson, one of the more virulent progressives in these parts who usually takes me to task on the liberal blogs, but does come here when he wants his voice to be more widely heard. He is one of the legions of liberals who don’t understand the necessary attributes of a sovereign nation-state, and understands even less about immigration (as opposed to illegal entry). His deficit in the latter includes a belief that the US should have open borders to admit all walk-ins who complain of having a hard time making it in their native lands or that there are bad people living there. These people should be unconditionally embraced and succored by America, and provided a facile path to citizenship. Anything less is heartless and not the American way.
Apropos to those beliefs, he joins with other local liberal worthies lambasting my support of secure borders and opposition to unfettered entry of illegal aliens. He and his consider my position to be both immoral and hypocritical since I am a naturalized citizen who came here as a WW2 refugee and an invited legal immigrant. To such minds as theirs, there is no difference between those entering according to our country’s laws, and those crawling in under the fence in the dark of night.
They take comfort in their views by imagining that my family and I, along with millions of similarly fleeing east Europeans, were somehow Nazi collaborators after escaping from the Red Army – in short, that our refugee status was assumed under a false flag when interred in a UN displaced persons camp after the war. In his own words.
As you well know, George, some of the camps were just displaced civilians, but some were up to 80% Nazi soldiers. Tell us which camp your family was in and we can easily look up in-depth studies done on who was there and where they came from. But you already knew that. ... Posted by: Chris Peterson | 18 February 2021 at 03:48 PM
ChrisP 348pm - NONE of the UN displaced person refugee camps operated by UNRRA and then IRO had any known Nazis or Communists in them. To be admitted required going through a formidable screening process to assure that you were politically 'clean'. And since you know nothing of this blog's contents, I'll let you do a voyage of discovery and find out in which DP camps the Rebanes were interred. ... Posted by: George Rebane | 18 February 2021 at 04:48 PM
George, My point isn't whether your family had Nazi collaborators or not, I couldn't care less. I find it much more interesting that your family most likely came to America as WW2 refugees, which was an act of compassion on our part and is counter to every word you write on the subject. And if your family did come here as refugees, it makes one question why families like mine, who have been here since the early 1700's, should take any of your xenophobic ramblings seriously. It's the black hole in the center of your pseudo-intellectualism and draws into question whether you truly understand what being a patriot of this nation actually means.
So, you can take your political advice on how our nation should be run and shove it; we are a society with over 240 years of shared sacrifice and we don't need your empty platitudes to "fix" what we've been successfully doing so long without your misguided opinions. Drop the crayons and step away from the Constitution; you are nothing but a distraction from the real issues of the day. Posted by: Chris Peterson | 19 February 2021 at 07:54 AM
ChrisP 754am - Priceless Mr Peterson, simply priceless. Thank you for being open and revealing in how your kind views immigrants and naturalized citizens. Posted by: George Rebane | 19 February 2021 at 08:54 AM
As a footnote, two other commenters also replied to Mr Peterson’s attack followed by his final reply.
Yes George. You’re an immigrant, and our families have been here way longer than yours. As such you really have no right to espouse your thoughts on the Constitution. Am I summing up your argument adequately Mr. Peterson? Posted by: Barry Pruett | 19 February 2021 at 08:02 AM
C.P., I'm ashamed for you... I've family roots in the US stretching to the 1600s (which by Peterson standard identity politics means i win) and some arriving not much before the Rebanes. My wife was born in Gary, IN, of WW2 refugees from Eastern Europe, fleeing the leftist thugs led by Tito.
You are the xenophobe here. The Ugly American. Posted by: Gregory | 19 February 2021 at 10:03 AM
So, just so we're clear; you guys aren't xenophobic, but anyone who reads your posts and dares to call you that must be xenophobic, right? There are no past posts disparaging the refugees coming to our southern border, correct? And all comments on ethnic and religious differences are nurturing and constructive? Right then.
And someone who takes pride in his family coming here centuries ago must never question the wisdom of newcomers whose every written word is a rebuke of the historical American way of doing things. Rebanes' every comment seeks to snuff the flames beneath the great melting pot of our society. Every thought that's put to print is negative; stop this, change that, ridicule these, reject those. You folks are consumed with all things cynical and bleak, with never a positive comment except to pat each other on the back for a barb well delivered.
I thank the gods daily that you are the minority; always have been and always will be, and I leave you to wallow in the festering sludge of your own making.
Ciao Posted by: Chris Peterson | 19 February 2021 at 10:36 AM
So there you have it. As stark a difference as one can imagine. The millions of Chris Petersons of our country want to silence conservative naturalized citizens who came here legally, and promote the public demonstrations by hordes of sign-carrying illegals interpreting their ‘constitutional rights’ and demanding that our government support such fabricated rights and force American citizens to welcome and succor them in their illegally appropriated new home. Those who oppose such policies are to be watched and noted for various kinds of contemplated future dispositions that include institutionalized “deprogramming” and mass “re-education” (a la the Uighurs under the tender mercies of the CCP, more here).
This kid sings in Chicago. This song is about the folks with whom I grew up near the steel mills in Chicago...Interlake/ACME. Mostly Union men (mostly from the south or legal immigrants) living in those neighborhoods just trying to make a better life for themselves and the kids. These Union folks are generally God fearing patriots who love America. They are the folks Democrats forgot and clearly no longer understand.

That is so cute that you think that anyone would believe that Republicans stand up for unions, or the working class, or poor people.
I have my own gripes about Democrats not paying enough attention to workers issues, but the idea that Republican policies have been better for workers is simply laughable.
Once the Republican party was pretty pro-union, although there was a strong anti-union thread in there too, like the Taft-Hartley Act in 1947...but that all began to change in the mid 1980's. Starting with the Taft-Hartley Act and the beginnings of Republican opposition to collective bargaining the anti-union Republican movement grew, moving to right to work laws, then to the busting of PATCO, then to dropping any pro-union language in party platforms in the 1990's, until today when there is no group more hostile to unions than the current crew of elected Republicans.
Let's be clear the working people who support the Republican party today, who Josh Hawley references when he says, "...the Republicans are the working class party now.." are the working class who are working three jobs at low wages with now benefits...because Republicans busted the unions.
But let's be clear Barry Republicans can't be a "working class party" unless their drop their opposition to a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural society, largely because that is who most of the working class in America is today.
But you can be a white, grievance laden party....which is just about all.

Who put unions to work Steve? Trump.
Who just stabbed them in the back? Biden.
I'm no supporter of unions. It's legalized extortion.
Think they are so damned great? Look at what the teacher's union is doing. They like their money for doing nothing.
They don't want to go back to work Any excuse NOT TO.
Funny,, PLENTY were happy to tell union greed to fuck off.
There was/is some program where people got money to take care of their elders. The "caregivers union" wanted a cut of that because taking care of old people was a union job.
Yet no union worker was there to "take the job".
Now what "union" has Herr Biden set up to get the pipe layers "union" back to work? "Solar panel squeegee boys"?
SEIU? Try getting ahold of a state worker...(Unemployment in this state is beyond fucked up.)
Repubs have been for the working stiff. Your side? want to give OUR jobs to illegals. Yup, that's real "worker friendly".

They aren't opposed to it, Frisch - they are opposed to it being rammed through with racist quotas and lowered standards.
It's the white leftys that openly believe that blacks and browns can't learn what whites and Asians can as well not being able to perform at the highest levels in employment.
Remember Frisch - "if you don't vote for Biden you ain't black" and "Not everybody in the community—in the Hispanic and African American community, particularly in rural areas that are distant and/or inner city districts—know how to get online to determine how to get in line for that Covid vaccination at the Walgreens or at the particular store,"

The big lie is alive and well -
While defending Cruz, Trump Jr. never mentions Abbott by name in the tweet or the video he posted.
In the clip, Trump Jr. appears to be referencing the Democratic Governor of California Gavin Newsom when mentioning governors “flagrantly disregarding their executive orders.”
While arguably worded confusingly, Trump Jr. makes no direct mention of Abbott being a Democrat. He never even names Abbott in the video or tweets, but he does directly name Cuomo and makes reference to Newsom.

"We are terrible at seeing power. Or in other words: power is great at not being seen.
Because power is a human universal, all thinking is within the field of some power. Thoughts that go along with the field are obvious and soar up instantly like birds. Thoughts that flow against the field are as slow and impossible as arthritic turtles.
The thought of studying itself is inherently foreign to power. Power does not want to know itself. The most powerful powers do not even think of their power as power. If power does know itself, it keeps that knowledge to itself; but mostly, it really does believe its own official myths. The real O’Brien is a rare figure.
The thought of studying its enemies, however, is very satisfying and natural. Power has to know its enemies—any competing power—to fight them; also, to demonize them. Every power structure which is found in the enemy is suffused with a malign glow, as if our doctrinal immune systems were warning us of alien coronavirus spikes. Ideally, this same structure is not also found in itself; if so, the two must be well-distinguished."

Reading 12:28 - Love it. 'The Prince' meets Marshall McLuhan.
Following the reasoning of this essay makes it ever more important to follow the dictum "the best govt is the least govt".
Less govt=less power leakage.
One thing that wasn't touched on was the fact the power leakage is flowing through people who seem less and less attached to reality than ever. Illiterate, toothless sod farmers in the 1800s might have been horribly uneducated as to the wonders of (then) modern science and the many literary masterpieces of the enlightenment, but they would have never confused rioters and looters of last summer with brave soldiers landing on French beaches on D-Day. They would not look at the pampered, over-fed and privileged brats throwing temper-tantrums on college campuses today as having any grievance of any sort near to what the little babies imagine.
It could be that the author would find that fact to be of little consequence in the larger scheme of things.
I did especially like the emphasis on the concept of power structures self-organizing. Large numbers of people working towards the same end don't have to get together in a basement at regular secret meetings. It doesn't have to be a 'conspiracy' in the formal sense.
Good stuff.

School reopening: Rather interesting watching the new administration dodge and weave waiting for the teacher unions to tell them what to say. There is no need for science or even looking at data or facts like that zero classroom teachers have died of C-19 due to the catching it in classroom. The one reported case was been debunked. They (our gov’t experts) don’t even bother to keep track of student to teacher transmission. Not even on their list priorities. Tracking such needed data and science to even discuss school reopening is not on any list. Not needed at all to make POLITICAL decisions. Gut political instinct rejects “the idea”.
Yes, we know, and we also know that the safest place for kids from the C-19 Pandemic is in a place full of their peers, aka, schools.
Interesting to watch because their political instincts is in direct conflict with the data and CDC. They have no idea, no plan. If there is a plan, nobody knows what it is because there isn’t one.
Yes, we all love vaccines and we know teachers are prioritized for the wonderful vaccine, but the question was (for the fourth time), does Biden believe teachers can go back to the classroom without being vaccinated? Yes, Toy Story was wonderful....and WTF is the plan????
First Political instinct is to lie.
I have never seen an Administration so discombobulated....even more than at Trump’s wildest moments. They are seriously don’t know what is going on.
Q: what is Biden doing for small business hurting because of the Kung Flu?
A: Joe Biden nominated the first woman to run the SBA.
Q: WTF are you talking about? What does that have to do with small businesses at the edge of shuttering theIr doors for good? BTW, Trump put in place the first woman to run the SBA... Linda Marie McMahon (née Edwards) followed by that wonderful Latina highly qualified Jovita Carranza.
Q: What’s happening with the Stimulus checks?
A: President Biden appointed a woman to run Treasury.
Q: no idea, eh?

“ Here’s one thing we need to keep in mind. Those who utilize fear as a tactical weapon are often themselves afraid. They may make their insouciant pronouncements as if they were confident of their positions, but how else do we explain the troops and walls in our capitol? How else are we to regard the attacks on a president now out of office and banned from social media? How else should we interpret a government that operates by executive orders and fiats? If these aren’t examples of anxiety, fear of failure, unease over their positions, and terror over their illegitimacy, then I’m not sure what is.
Those who seek to rule us are afraid of us. They are afraid we see through them. Worse, they are afraid we might find them and their programs laughable. Were it otherwise, they would resort to reason rather than intimidation, thoughtful dialogue rather than fear mongering.
Rush Limbaugh once said, “I don’t think looking at things through the prism of fear is going to accomplish anything.””

OK,, we need to get a Spring plan drawn up.
I got the cooking end down pat. With two smokers and a spit roaster to put to work. It then just depends of how carnivorous ya'll can be. Ribs? Loin? Beef? Chicken? All of the above?
Bring some form of dead animal and I'll cook it.
Yup, we need to get a shindig planned.

“Yup, we need to get a shindig planned.“. Amen brother.
Trump is speaking at CPAC. That will be party down time as well. CPAC is always upbeat and celebratory of our nation and so pleasant and optimistic. and the best thing about it iis that it drives our local friends totally unbelievable crazy when those Grinches hear the sounds of joy from the villagers. Gets them racing over here like the house is fire and must stomp it out now. What’s this love fest all about? Violation, danger, violation!
Yes, we are that important!

Tossing Nevada County Peeping Tom Watch a bone: Internet rumor on lefty crazy-toon pycho sites say Q-Anon is planning a March 4th redo of Jan 8. March on the Capital! Oh course there is absolutely no proof offered, just matter of factly blowing smoke up each other’s skirts. Q-Anon is organizing on FB!!!! Insurrection! Provoked by Trump.
Good excuse as any to keep troops and walls surrounding the military encampment. They will defend us all and our democracy against Q-Anon, the swamping heard....whoever they are. Never bothered to even check them out. I get all those groups of a few hundred in a Nation of 330 million confused. Heard Oath Keepers is part of the dastardly plot. RICO Act stuff, lol.
One US Marine out of the service and newer member of Oath Keepers went uncorked and disgraced our Corps, our Nation, the Oath Keepers, and his friends on Jan 6. The Oath Keepers took him aside, tried to discourage him from going to DC, others told him they absolutely do not agree with his FB posts and some even tried to privately reason with him that he is heading in a dangerous direction and.....well.....Oath Keepers is a Terrorist organization. Just like the Promise Keepers. A bunch of WASPS! White Supremist WASPS, the enemy.
They truly run of fear and lap up the fear mongering like the dogs they are.

This is your "business friendly" LIB.....
https://www.breitbart.com/clips/2021/02/21/dem-rep-khanna-we-dont-want-small-businesses-that-cant-afford-15-minimum-wage/
"Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA) declared Sunday on CNN’s “Inside Politics” that we should not want “low-wage businesses” when pressed on small businesses who would struggle under a federal mandate to pay employees $15 an hour."
So Leftie business owners,,, you agree?

Walt 913am - I guess no one asked us consumers whether we wanted such businesses and the prices they charge.

@ 9:13 am
Finally someone is talking about the minimum wage! Nobody said a word about the minimum wage under this month’s post “$15/hr Dumbth on the March”. Well, Walt did on the first comment but the thread was hijacked by the usual suspect(s) who wanted to talk about anything and everything but the topic at hand.
Objections to who are the dumbest voters (the voters in the Congressional District whose collective intelligence elected Marjorie Taylor Greene to the Congress )Trump, Trump, Trump, Covid-19, to Candid Camera, Trump, Trump, Trump, Green again, this is the home of White Nationalism...but crickets on the 15 bucks an hour for the 2.3% of working folks who are temporary minimum wage earners, the vast majority of which being high school kids and summer jobs for the freshman and sophomores returning home from college for the summer. Or, part time work to supplement other sources of income.
Ok,, got that off my chest. My control freak OCD lefty ways reared it’s ugly head again. A skunk smells it’s own first. An embarrassing lapse in my recovery from liberalism. Darn, you fall off that wagon and it runs over ya.
Ah hell, we all know what the facts say about minimum wage. Helps a few, hurts a lot more, and does more harm than good. The data is clear. Start with Dr. Thomas Sowell or Walter E Wliiams or The City of Seattle to scratch the surface.
Walt: Speaking of falling off the wagon (not me, knock on a wooden knucklehead), count me in to cover all costs for the beer, adult beverages, soda pops, and fufu liquids. Just cause I do not partake, does not mean I would ever deny someone their right to social lubricants. As the duck said to the bartender, “Buy the house a round and put it on my bill.” Now, to get the greenies to ya. Maybe a drone delivery? May be out of the area in Spring, but drinks on me....
Posted by: Bill Tozer | 21 February 2021 at 10:04 AM
Thanks Bill, I was thinking about your "dryness".
Yes, I may be a redneck in the sticks, by my going through a case of beer in one evening is long past. Being a bartender in a place one step above a biker bar in the middle of New Mexico cured me of that.
We will get the particulars figured real soon.
Posted by: Walt | 21 February 2021 at 10:59 AM
It’s all good. All my rowdy friends have settled down, especially the ones I have outlived. :).
“Being a bartender in a place one step above a biker bar in the middle of New Mexico cured me of that.”
Ha, what a drugstore cowboy. If Punch only knew when he labeled me “Biker Bill”, that the very first thing I thought was, “Biker Bar? I wish! If only Paul knew that from where I been, a biker bar would be at least two rungs up the ladder.” At least two big steps up. Lol. It’s all good. I more or less romance the times, the era, but not the “are we having fun yet” part. Lack of problems is a good thing.
Heck, I have settled down so much I believe I now suffer from Agoraphobia. What a time to catch spring fever. Biker Bill. Now, that’s really romanizing the gang that wore leather vests with the trucker mud flap looking lady on them, but with exposed breasts and pistoles hanging from the nipples....to the White House and Trump had a blast with them. Oh my. My people are good people. Love it. I usually have little problems with Irredeemables. That’s a step below deplorables and dregs of society.
Best story I heard about romancing and minimizing our past mistakes to make it magically appear better or in the best light was from a guy from Texas of all places. One day he decided to check out different places and catch a change of scenery. So, he grabbed the family and headed straight to California. He continued, “I called that a change of scenery, but the State of Texas called it unlawfully flight to avoid prosecution.” Funny guy.
Dryness? I am so dry I am a fire hazard.” Another line from the same Texas dude. He’s doing the dirt nap and life is so good today that I hope I never ever lose the attitude of gratitude. Our country calls. The distress signal has been spotted. Have a good one. Spring fever calls and the sap is flowing,

That's a relief... to do it by Air Gregory, it would take two roundtrips, and only 1 rounder could split fuel expenses 50/50 by my understanding of faa regs... for a total of 8 or nine hours of me flying.
Beautiful flyover country.
Posted by: Gregory | 21 February 2021 at 01:06 PM
Gregory - FAA says if I foot the fuel bill, it counts as 'commercial'?
You'd still be out the hours on your airframe and powerplant, not to mention your own time.
Good grief.
Posted by: Scott O | 21 February 2021 at 01:11 PM
BT 11:50 - "Spring fever calls and the sap is flowing."
It's calling here, too. But it's a long distance call. We still have snow on the ground and plenty more winter coming.
Our daughter in Tejas has 74 today.
Ah, well - towards the end of every season, you always wish it was the next one right now.
Patience, young grasshopper.
Posted by: Scott O | 21 February 2021 at 01:18 PM
so 111pm
one can share the actual expenses split equally by seat... when flying. it isn't like a handshake deal with automobiles.
Yes, the FAA is anal retentive over the rules concerning flying and money changing hands by folks without a Commercial rating... when i bought the Bonanza it was with the expectation I'd pick up the rating (there are parts of the practical exam that require having retractable gear and a controllable pitch prop) but didn't get around to it. There's literally nothing the rating buys me except in cases like this.
there are hair raising workarounds that shady operators play with... for example, charter operations with bizjets are very heavily regulated, both he airplane and the pilot... but demo rides for an airplane being shown to a prospective buyer... practically no regs...
Time building by young pilots intending to work the airlines drove the regulations. Old farts like me with a Private Pilot rating who already have the hours required for an Air Transport rating really can't derive value from the logging of more time flying.

Watch the socialist wokesters and blm further divide society -
One explains that “To be less white is to: be less oppressive, be less arrogant, be less certain, be less defensive, be less ignorant, be more humble, listen, believe, break with apathy, break with white solidarity.” Another simply urges the view: “Try to be less white.”
Responding to the scandal on his YouTube channel, Reform UK party leader Nigel Farage lamented that he had thought progress was being made against the “Black Lives Matter madness”, but that the Coca-Cola revelations were another example of the corporate world having “lost its marbles” as a result of the movement.
“So, to be less white means you’ll be less arrogant, less ignorant — I mean, the list goes on: ‘try to be less white’,” he said.
“And the inference here is clear, isn’t it? That white is bad; white means supremacist; white means you look down your noses at everybody else; white means you are guilty!” he continued.
“And this is what Coca-Cola is foisting upon their employees in the USA?” he asked, expressing his hope that it would not “cross the Atlantic”.
“Do you think it means that white people who are exposed to this suddenly think: ‘Ah, yes! I must become a better person; I must make sure I exhibit within myself no prejudice towards anybody.’ Or does it actually make white people really, really angry, and actually make them feel that society is now more divided than ever?”

"Another day, another suspicious act committed by Democrats in the 2020 election. Joe Biden was declared the winner in Colorado in the 2020 election. But the number of votes for Biden was reportedly more than both Hillary and Obama received in prior elections, a lot more. President Trump surpassed both the Obama and Hillary record vote counts, which you would think would have won him the state since Biden had no game and no following, but instead the impossible occurred. Biden received half a million more votes than Obama and Hillary to set a record and outperform them all.

“Are you planning to continue carrying Fox News, OANN, and Newsmax on your platform both now and beyond the renewal date?” California Reps. Anna G. Eshoo and Jerry McNerney wrote in a letter to the companies.
