George Rebane
’20-year Afghanistan Mission Accomplished’ tout our Democrat leaders as they thank all those service members who sacrificed their lives in so many ways. These politicians describe such sacrifices as having been made voluntarily by our military heroes. But IMHO that doesn’t jive with reality. Who among the sacrificed would have willingly done so if told from the gitgo in, say, 2012 that you’re going to Afghanistan with the possibility of dying, getting your legs blown off, or coming back with PTSD in order to deny the Taliban ragheads another eight years of running the country as a tyrannical Islamist gulag, and which will again become home to various international terror organizations of the kind that gave us 9/11, and then we will cut and run? Not many would have signed up for that kind of duty had they been told the truth.
But if being given a realistic mission, say, ‘It’s highly likely that we’ll be in Afghanistan forever with a minimal force level consisting mostly of intelligence operations, drone air support, and training Afghan security forces to prop up their government and keep the country from reverting to raghead terrorist control. You will be in combat until we can bring the situation into a desired low/no casualty stasis. This is the cost of doing White Hat business around the world to secure our homeland and the lands of our allies who join us in such operations. America has done this in the past, and realistically today we see no future time when global evil will be vanquished so that such outposts and tours of duty, first outlined by Ambassador Kennan in 1946, will no longer be necessary.’ I know of no one in our circle of friends who would not sign up for such a tour when called upon – and that is because most of us have manned the ramparts of freedom at one time or another, and will do so again. But it all starts with telling us the truth.
[4sep21 update] Never let a crisis or disaster go to waste. In the Dems’ desperate attempt to paper over the historically atrocious Biden Afghan debacle, the lamestream media are doing their best to sweep that ignominious, tragic, and chaotic military retreat under the rug, any rug of opportunity. So Ida for Al-Qaeda has become the opportune switcheroo in the socialist press and punditry. No more are we concerned about that premier terrorist organization resurging and setting up again in Afghanistan. At the best the lamestream will continue pushing the lie that the Taliban doesn’t get along with Al-Qaeda and other recidivist outfits like the ISIS-X (currently X=K) et al.
So now we don’t have to worry about the return of all kinds of bad guys as long as we ‘work with’ the Taliban. Anyone who has been paying attention (a shrinking minority) knows that all of them belong to the Haqqani network of cheek-by-jowl anti-western terror outfits. And at their chapter house meetings, they must be laughing their butts off about what they read in the NYT, WaPo, and hear on CNN, MSNBC, … . Meanwhile, to keep the Return of the Ragheads under wraps, the Democrats have qued up Covid and climate change for their lamestream as the next diversionary dollops for dimwits. (Remember, they still have to have to keep the open-border crisis hidden from their cognitively calcified constituents.)
I'll suggest a few alternatives.
. Invade the country (which was pretty slick as I remember). Chase around the bad guys knowing you'll never get them all, but give it a good lick. Leave. Wash rinse repeat if needed.
. Invade the country. Divide it into a dozen kingdoms. Bring in a Viceroy to play them off against each other with money and the odd punishment. Worked for the British for some time, it's a proven methodology.
. Invade the country. Deindustrialize it. Remove all fuel, vehicles, weapons, tech that can be found. Leave. It's not 100%, but it'll slow them down a bit.
. Don't invade the country. Bomb bad people for a bit to draw attention from the main effort. Find every backer of Islamic terrorists. Take their money. Doesn't matter if they are Saudi royalty (likely). Keep it up for a few years.
Actually running the place as a country called 'Afghanistan' with a capital and all sounds like a waste of time and is merely applying Western thinking to a strange and foreign land. That's probably also true for a lot of sub Saharan Africa, it's all just a charade.

scenes 1201pm - I'll accept those, since they were also part of a previously posted Rebane Doctrine approach. But here I just wanted to illustrate the difference between two messages - one a lie and one the truth (but not necessarily the optimal approach). Had we just kept the Trump scenario going, we could have tried different variations as time passed. None of them would have to be characterized as 'nation building' in our image. The bottom line here is that we avoid getting into decades long slow-boil hot wars with tens of thousands of our troops on the ground.

My guess is that the US gubmint agencies/subagencies (and to some extent multinational corporations) form warring tribes that want a piece of the action..either some money or just the sheer joy of managing someone else's affairs (while boosting your own career, naturally).
I'd be surprised if there's really a 'Trump' strategy although the aggregate of all those groups certainly makes up a scenario.
Perhaps the problem is that no single person or group is ever in charge. It's just a bunch of mission creeps.

...having said that, I appreciate your point that the static situation in Afghanistan prior to the Biden Bungle was a starting point for something better, or at least something maintainable. I have no clue what the current cost involved was but the death rate for US troops seemed as low as you could expect, perhaps lower than stateside.
The way this all went down, the harm to relationships with the British and other involved parties, the sheer sloppiness of the whole deal, is clearly unacceptable but about what I would expect. Perhaps if the Men in Dresses who run Democratic politics had better acumen it might have been avoided.
As a side note, Scott Adams had an interesting take on all this in defense of Biden.

scenes 1243pm - True, and that kind of 'broken field running' strategy is the best that we can expect to execute if we want to maintain a tolerable geo-strategic state of affairs as the White Hat hegemon. From my perch, Kennan nailed it way back when. Trade global wars that may end civilization for more frequent, low-intensity police actions with willing allies.

They've also positively invited journalists to document their treasure, losing no moment to show the cameras what the Americans left behind, in a constant insult to injury message to Washington and the West.
During his speech on Tuesday, President Biden hailed the US exit and evacuation efforts an "extraordinary success". He said, "No nation has ever done anything like it in all of history; only the United States had the capacity and the will and ability to do it." In a deeply ironic, twisted, and tragic sense... this statement is true, just not at all in the way the president thinks.

Today’s quotes go here. Best place for them
Insight: “The real rulers in Washington are invisible and exercise power from behind the scenes.” —Justice Felix Frankfurter (1882-1965)
“Talk about a catastrophic success. The Biden administration wants credit for the Afghanistan evacuation as measured by the sheer number of people it flew out amid a security and humanitarian crisis of its own making. This is the arsonist bragging about how many fires he has put out. … That the U.S flew out more than 115,000 people out of Kabul is a testament to the awesome capabilities of the United States military. It is not in any way a vindication of President Biden’s exit.” —Rich Lowry
“It’s hard to imagine any prior American president, perhaps with the exception of Jimmy Carter, abandoning Americans behind enemy lines. Theodore Roosevelt mustered the naval might of the United States to save one American who had been kidnapped in Morocco in 1904. Barack Obama traded five Guantanamo detainees for Bowe Bergdahl in 2014. Even Biden felt the impulse to get every last American out. He pledged to do it in his interview with George Stephanopoulos. In order to keep his promise to the Taliban to get out by August 31, though, he broke his promise to his countrymen.” —Rich Lowry
“At a time when the U.S. needed a strong president, we got a weak and inept politician. At a time when the U.S. needed courageous leadership, we got a bumbling coward. At a time when we needed a truth-teller in the White House, we got a habitual liar. As a result, American military families are grieving, and the blood of their loved ones is on Biden’s hands. … [The president] has negotiated with the Taliban from a position of weakness, on his knees, with their gun held to his head. Not only does the Taliban not fear Biden — they laugh at him. He couldn’t frighten a puppy.” —Oliver North & David Goetsch
“There are many bad people and many bad countries in the world, and only a fear of good countries prevents them from conquering other countries. There is less fear of good countries in the world today than at any time since World War II. And that is especially so because the good countries are preoccupied with their own alleged evils rather than with the world’s real evils.” —Dennis Prager
“My reason for submitting a letter of resignation: A lack of trust and confidence in your ability to lead.” —final line of Marine Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller’s resignation letter
Friendly fire: “Many people I’m speaking to say we are far worse off than we were from the beginning because within a few weeks of launching this war, the Taliban were overthrown, al-Qaeda was scattered. Now, the U.S. is leaving after 20 years with the Taliban in power and the United States having been driven out. It’s a tremendous legacy. … Some have described it as the worst capitulation of Western values in our lifetimes.” —NBC News’s Richard Engel
The BIG Lie: “We have Americans that get stranded in countries all the time.” —Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby
Grand delusions I: “We have considerable leverage over the Taliban.” —National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan
Grand delusions II: “We have enormous leverage over the Taliban.” —White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki
Non compos mentis I: “The U.S. … has our own far religious right dreaming of a theocracy that would impose a particular brand of Christianity, drive women from the workforce and solely into childbirth, and control all politics.” —MSNBC’s Joy Reid
Non compos mentis II: “Always funny to me when [Christians] pretend their religion is somehow less oppressive of women than Islam.” —freelance journalist Michelle Taylor, a.k.a. Feminista Jones
Non compos mentis III: “The Taliban allow no liberty of conscience. They are like #ChristianNationalists and other American Christian fundamentalists.” —Duke University theology professor Curtis Freeman
Non compos mentis IV: “Make no mistake; Christian evangelicals are America’s #taliban and weld [sic] as much power too in their society.” —author John Smith
Non compos mentis V: “The Taliban are as fanatical about their beliefs and culture as the millions of people right here in the U.S. who believe in religion, conspiracy theories, and alternate reality.” —actor Tim Russ
And last… “The President made the decision to trust the Taliban. The President made the decision to set an arbitrary August 31st deadline. The President made the decision to abandon Bagram Air Base. The President made the decision not to expand the perimeter around Karzai International Airport. The President made the decision to undermine our NATO allies. The President made the decision to break our word to our Afghan partners. The President made the decision to tell one lie after another as the crisis unfolded. The President made the morally indefensible decision to leave Americans behind. Dishonor was the President’s choice. May history never forget this cowardice.” —Senator Ben Sasse

[email protected] 840 While the murder of the afgans best pilots is a fact there is another unfortunate fact. Wile we were there for a generation and were able to train some pilots the maintainers was a whole different issue because of how high tech and complicated, they never had a robust cohort of competent technicians. You also had a culture of corruption like you could not imagine. That bled the supply system.

Now collusion and conspiracy to cover up things going to shit?

https://www.foxnews.com/media/jen-psaki-tweet-trump-phone-call-ukraine
"However, a 2019 tweet from the then-CNN contributor called for transparency in the early weeks of then-President Donald Trump's Ukraine scandal that ultimately resulted in his impeachment. It chiefly involved a phone call Trump had with counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky about investigating Biden and his son Hunter.
"It is not just the call transcript. The whistleblower complaint would likely have more details. We need both. And not just the call," Psaki wrote at the time."
NOW we get,,,
"At the White House press briefing on Wednesday, Psaki dodged questions about Biden's phone call with Ghani.
"Well, I'm not going to get into private, diplomatic conversations or leaked transcripts of phone calls,""

If they can impeach Trump for a phone call where no law was broken, Biden is guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors for providing aid to the enemy (i.e. providing the kill list of Americans stuck in Afghanistan and the list of Afghan employees who couldn’t get out on the SIV Program). Biden lied and people died. Aid to the enemy is treason and certainly impeachable. While Republicans and Democrats have both made impeachment cheap (Clinton and now Trump), this act is certainly impeachable. That said, I’d rather keep Biden in office as long as possible so Republicans can wrap that albatross around the neck of every Democrat until 2025. Talk about the biggest loser in presidential history. Biden is gonna drag down the democrats for a generation. The marxists push is over. Lol

"....the meeting quickly devolved into an angry rant by Trump, who accused top U.S. military officials of incompetence.
He called Afghanistan a “loser war” and told generals assembled there that “you don’t know how to win anymore.” He attacked the group for the costs of ongoing military operations overseas and..."
"I wouldn’t go to war with you people,” the book quotes Trump as saying to the military officials. “You’re a bunch of dopes and babies.”

The internet has changed the way we communicate.
Saw a clip of Tailban fighters petting the US service dogs left behind. The translation went like this:'(Mohammad?) did not like dogs, but we feed them and treat them nice.'
here is a more sanitized collection of memes. The ones I saw were excellent, but not fit for general consumption on these pages. They really focused on the Rainbow flag and such.

First and foremost: Kudos to Scenes on Sept 1, 2:22 pm. Wow. I have been chewing on that for 3 days. The revenge of the Deep State. They have 6 ways to Sunday to get back at you. First Trump, now Biden. A mental video montage of examples through the years in my mind. Obama threw up his arms, made his peace with them, the spent his last two years with his feet up on his desk. They caused him no grief as long as he went along to get along.

The media lies, and the American people caught on. This one simple fact is probably the most important thing that came out of the trump era. Trump showed that it’s OK to call the media out as liars. We have been doing locally for years. Everyone advised against it locally, but we won.

This must be the reasom we left $80B of stuff in Afghanistan.
Pete Buttigieg, the Sec. of Transportation, was in charge of retrieving the $80B of materiel from Afghanistan, but he couldn't make it. Too busy tending to the birthing.
He & his husband Chasten announced birth of twins with sweet photo. USA TODAY, updated 1:51 p.m. Sep 4, 2021
Congratulations are in order for Pete Buttigieg and his husband, Chasten, who welcomed their twin children. "Chasten and I are beyond thankful for all the kind wishes since first sharing the news that we’re becoming parents".

It is utterly hilarious to me that you believe you "won."
Let's be clear, you do not control anything locally other than a few state and federal legislative seats, where at the state level the broader political trends have rendered them completely impotent, and at the national level the changing demographic is certain to either guarantee frozen governance in the short term, or eventually a permanent minority of aggrieved, discontented late middle aged and elderly white men.
The County has moved on from you guys....the majority of the people see...they see your embrace of nihilism, irrationality, conspiracy theories, violence and insurrection...and frankly just laugh behind your backs.

Here are the charges. Tel us it ain't so.
https://www.breitbart.com/clips/2021/09/05/gop-rep-mast-biden-should-be-impeached-for-treason/
" “Impeachment is absolutely something that should be considered. I would say no less than 10,000 counts of reckless endangerment, all of the American lives over there. That’s the minimum. That is the real crime.”
He continued, “We know for a fact that the Taliban is the sworn enemy of the United States of America. We are still in the midst of the war on terror, and as I said, I would absolutely consider the manipulation of intelligence, giving aid and comfort to the enemy. All three of those things are part of what meets the constitutional definition of treason.”"
Never mind the many times Biden has lied through his false teeth on national TV knowing full well what he was saying were LIES.
Trump had plan for withdrawal well established. Biden scrapped it. That's on Biden.

re StevenF 1058am - Admitted, CA is in its own league of insane states attempting inure themselves to socialism, and educate their constituents to embrace that label. On the local level led by progressive intellectuals like SteveF, they are well on their way to convincing the Democrat voters that it is indeed possible to tax an economy to wealth, since they all teach that tax rates do not affect economic behavior. Evidence of their success appears daily in the op-ed pages of The Union.

Creepy grampa joes state dept is feuding with the DOD and not helping Americans trying to get out of kabul -
Two other American individuals separately involved in evacuation efforts, whom Fox News is not naming to avoid jeopardizing ongoing rescue efforts, similarly said that the State Department is the sole entity preventing their charter flights from leaving Afghanistan.
"This is zero place to be negotiating with American lives. Those are our people standing on the tarmac and all it takes is a f****ing phone call," one of those individuals, who has been integral to private evacuation efforts from Afghanistan, told Fox News.
"If one life is lost as a result of this, the blood is on the White House's hands. The blood is on their hands," that individual said, adding: "It is not the Taliban that is holding this up – as much as it sickens me to say that – it is the United States government."
That individual suggested that the State Department's obstruction is motivated in part by embarrassment that private individuals are rescuing Americans that the U.S. government left behind.
Military command over Al Udeid Air Base in Doha, Qatar, have informed those seeking clearance to land that they must first go through the State Department to gain approval, an email reviewed by Fox News shows.
Clay has a manifest of 4,500 names of U.S. citizens, green card holders, SIVs and refugees trying to get state-side. So far, they've given the State Department 800 names for a first round of flights. Fox News has reviewed that manifest, which confirms Clay's account.

Pass the baton to State. No resources there either and those veterans and private funded rescuers bettet not pull Americans out of the Shithole and embarrass the Biden Plan! Fools are the creepy grampa joe brain trust -
What’s happened though is we’ve left American citizens behind just as you’ve noted here and that is extremely concerning. I’ve just returned from a trip to London and to Brussels, meeting with allies in the U.K. and at NATO. We’ve got British citizens that have been left behind too. This activity that is taking place is not just with Americans but it's also with our allies who are suffering in exactly the same means and we have left them in this condition. I mean, the frustration that they conveyed to me was palpable. What they talked about was a situation where we let a calendar drive our approach to Afghanistan rather than the conditions on the ground and that’s what yields a situation precisely like the one that you just showed with this lady whose expecting a child trying to get out and not knowing what her future may be. We should have never let a calendar drive it. We shouldn’t let local domestic politics drive it. That’s the perception overseas. We should have been driving this based on the conditions on the ground and that’s not what happened here.

Re update:
“Meanwhile, to keep the Return of the Ragheads under wraps, the Democrats have qued up Covid and climate change for their lamestream as the next diversionary dollops for dimwits.”
I, too, have noticed that the suddenly Climate Catastrophe was back in the news. Latest is we have 24 months to save the planet. Not to be outdone, another outlet claimed we have 12 months. 12 months! Quick, run to the hills and hide in caves! We are all gonna die, being fried like a Frito. Ida, abortion, Delta are welcome relief to the Dems scurrying away from Biden’s Afghanistan colossal clustergluck like the rats they are. They got smoked out and running for cover.
Dems have gone back to the drawing board. Larry Elder is a racist, White Supremists (all 7,000 of them) are flooding the country and taking over our democracy, and booster shots as far as the eye can see for the Never Ending Story of the Never Ending Pandemic. The new normal.
12-24 months until our planet is uninhabitable certainly would blow Afghanistan off Page One-Page Six. They ever paraded out Greta Thornberg, but that shiny toy was lost its luster and she is pissed (what other emotion does she have?) than no one is listening no more to her. Guess horse dewormer will fill at least one news cycle until it was revealed as a hoax.
Aha. Vindman’s book is out and is making the talking head circuit. Jan 6 is still trying and failing to gain 24/7 traction.
Well, HIV came along and blew Herpes off the front pages. Can’t wait to see something bigger than Afghanistan to blow it off the news cycle. Strike that. There are multiple stories of much less importance already blowing Afghanistan into the circular file of yesterday’s news.

White House: Just stop. You are looking like fools with your lying two step. Just stop.
First, Psaki got all upset at the reporter using the term 'stranded' Americans in his question. 'There are no stranded Americans. I take offense at the word Stranded!' ok fine. How about 'left behind', 'abandoned', 'long time no come see'.
Now its 'there are no hostages'. Yes, I am quite certain that the Biden State Department is unaware of any hostage situations...judging solely by the quite recent past performances of our current State Department:

Just as predicted when creepy grampa joe and the socialists left bagram intact, Fing idots -
The Chinese military is reportedly eyeing a move into Bagram Air Base, only weeks after the Biden administration ordered a withdrawal from what was the United States' largest military installation in Afghanistan.
Multiple sources confirmed to U.S. News that the Chinese military is assessing the feasibility of sending soldiers and other officials to the abandoned military base, which the Biden administration shuttered in July before a full withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Generals and lawmakers warned President Biden against giving up the base, which was the largest American installation on China's western border, during the Taliban offensive. The president went ahead with the withdrawal in spite of the warnings.
"Should the United States and China come to blows in the Pacific, a second front will be critical given China's ability to concentrate its naval and missile assets around Taiwan," House Armed Services Committee member Mike Waltz (R., Fla.), a former Green Beret, wrote in May. "Unexplainably, in addition to giving up the only air base in the world located in a country that physically borders China and Russia's southern border, the Biden administration will also give up a key strategic foothold along Iran's eastern flank, and along the nuclear-equipped and unstable Pakistan
