If I remember correctly, a warm week of rain melted it all. The valley looked like an inland sea. 500 year flood. Water from the Coast range to these foothills.

BT 626 Don't bother wondering, that side across and all Alta Sierra dr poles down. Still many many various lines on the road and hanging above.

The scale is like a hurricane but with fewer deaths and homes destroyed. Infrastructure is toast.

Perhaps time to seek grants to harden our infrastructure.

I will find out what precipitated the crash of the internet, did a tree take out the backside cell tower?

Its happened too often for evacuation safety!

Please say a prayer for our exhausted emergency folks, utility, county works, first responders, tow truck drivers, folks with chainsaws and 4x4's aiding their neighbors and their worried families!!

Have a Happy and Safe NEW YEARS Dear Friends, Don n Ellen!

Walt. Could be, could be. I just remembered that Albertsons was being built, but not completed yet. The Fowler Center. Or was that Vons, or Ralph’s after Lucky became Ralph’s and then Ralph’s moved to Albertsons.....Luckys became Ralph’s and then the new Safeway and Ralph’s
moved across the freeway...the freeway which locals did not use as much at the time. Kinda hard to keep it straight. It’s was Lucky’s in ‘88....then had the nearest phone booth (phone) to my hobo camp abode. Nine miles to Lucky’s. Walked out to that phone booth in the snow more than once. Uphill both ways!

The storm that made me suffer the most was the one about 10 years ago. Early snow hit with the leaves still on the black oaks and madrone. Big time early snow that brought carnage up Banner above Gracie and up Red Dog a ways. What a nightmare. Then, that was followed a later manba jamba snow that took out the higher elevations up to Cascade Shores. It was a long winter that once you thought you were out of it, the carnage just kept moving on up the hills. At Cascade Shores I remember 4 straight power poles down, then a couple standing, then another 4 out of 5 on the ground. And that was just the part I say. And way up Pasquale I was not paying attention, looking up at a brand new Utility Pole and walked right into the old pole hole and was covered up to my abs in a fresh soup of red clay. Then some teenagers drove by and yelled out “Carnage!”, a word I now use to this very our. I owe those punks for leaving me with that lasting word. Fake it til you make it, greenhorn.

The refugees left this evening. They went out and bought a new generator (they had two that don’t work), packed up those horrid aggressive ankle biters that terrorized and attacked my two lovely mellow outside dogs, and headed on out. Power or no power, there is no place like home. Left me with two fish bowls and a couple of cheapo common tropical fish. That’s cool. I will just flush them down the toilet and tell them they died. Or, maybe not. All in all, it was a nice time and everyone was pleasant, even me. Odd. I even let the dude touch my MAGA hat and let him hold it gently like a baby for a couple of minutes.
I did my part. The only time the tensions got awkward and started to rise was when I told them I have no creamer in the house, nor any sugar. They simply did not believe me. Inconceivable. They asked like three times before panic set it. Their plan was to go to Dutch Brothers and fix the emergency. Is Dutch Bros open? Do you think Dutch Bros is open, Biker Bill? Unbelievable. Me Casa is su casa, but I drink it black. Bring your own fu-fu for your fresh ground beans from Ethiopia. Kids nowadays. Never been to Dutch Bros. so how would I know?

I am such an environmentalist that I drink tap water, which they found rather primitive. Lol. If you refugees want good coffe just the way you like it, then stop by Dutch Bros first. Capice? Don’t be any stranger. The look on their faces when I said there is no sugar or coffee fu-fu creamer in this house warmed the cockles of me merry heart.

"Their plan was to go to Dutch Brothers and fix the emergency. "

I admit that paying that much for boutique coffee that doesn't have a large dollop of whiskey strikes me as insane, but horses for courses I guess. Maybe Dutch Brothers could apply for a liquor license.

"Perhaps time to seek grants to harden our infrastructure."

Well, if you're going to build a local economy based on importing and feeding the elderly and employing the young as service workers and pot growers, you can make that argument.

At the very least, it would be nice to have a general round of bitching with perhaps a few results. Thing is, it costs money to have reliable cell phones, gasoline-on-demand, more (largely unused) plows, weather-proof electricity, and even things like pharmacies that work when things get sketchy (important due to insurance company and hospital discharge tendency to run drug supplies close to the bone. Articles like blood thinners and braindrugs being cases in point, backup supplies not allowed). The elderly hate spending money and restaurant staff doesn't make enough.

'Grants'? How about the fine citizens of the county pony up their own cash?

I mostly expect lots of Good News about all the Great Work done with disaster declaration supervisor meetings, phone recharging at the library, special emergency management center openings, fights at the warming center, hand waving about climate change. And so it goes.

Happy new year Scott, OK, I will "try" and use the correct pronoun.. But old habits die hard.

It’s all good. I, too, remembered that Valentine’s Day Massacre snow dump (89, 91?) was followed by a warm spell. So, I was wrong. You misspoke. :). It ain’t easy being spiritual being having a human experience.

Currently, I have been having beautiful sunsets with the setting sunlight (Golden Hour) reflecting off the bodies of water way out in the rice fields and it looks a giant prehistoric river or lake bed way out yonder.

I once checked out Smartsville on line. Their weather records only went back to 1960. Older records must have burned up or gone with the wind. Anyway, there has been no recorded snowfall in Smartsville since 1960. Looking down from up here on Chactaw Ridge through the trees and what I can make out of Smartsville, I saw snow on the trees, roofs, and ground in Smartville, California. That also was the day you were heading down there in the middle of the whiteout at 5:00 am. You are the better man. I looked out and saw snow here and pulled the curtains and made a cup of mud.

The year of 2021 ended as one of the most violent on record in Chicago, as a rise in the number of shootings left more people dead than in any single year in a quarter century, according to statistics released by the police department on Saturday.

According to the department, 2021 ended with 797 homicides. That is 25 more than were recorded 2020, 299 more than in 2019 and the most since 1996. And there were 3,561 shooting incidents in 2021, which is just over 300 more than were recorded in 2020 and a staggering 1,415 more shooting incidents than were recorded in the city in 2019.

Other cities have also seen an increase in the number of homicides. But Chicago, as it has in previous years, ended 2021 with more homicides than any other city in the United States, including New York and Los Angeles, both of which had recorded at least 300 fewer homicides than Chicago for the year as of late December, according to police data from those cities.

Thought of the morning. I haven't done any kind of back o' the envelope on this so it might be utter crap.

So what happens when everyone in a neighborhood or town buys a natgas whole-house generator, and it's cold with a power outage at the same time. This assume that the Great State of California doesn't force everyone to go all electric due to global warmingcooling.

Is there enough gas capacity to handle all of that running at once? My assumption is that PG&E does the bare minimum for any given spur of their system. Of course, there's all kind of heck to pay if gas pressures go below some minimum.

scenes

Thought of the morning #2.

I was pondering all the somewhat screwed folks leaving messages on Yubanet.

A bunch of them have emergency generators, and ran out of propane. The idea that you are somehow independent from emergencies, even the rather small-scale sort, just because you've got a generator is kind of funny. Given the schedule of how propane is delivered, which is a sort of grid, a certain number of people will be low on the stuff when the surprise bad event occurs. By the same token, gasoline (which is difficult to store these days) can be rather hard to track down when the line is three hours long.

You have to laugh when you see big ol' gas hog gas generators hooked to a house. 1/2 gallon per hour is not an unusual rate for the larger (non-inverter) variety.

Of course, you gotta wonder why so many elderly people live on tertiary county/forest service roads at higher elevations in this area. Things work 'til they don't.

The descent from modern life to Sarajevo takes less than one might think.

Bill Tozer

Scenes: I am leaning towards getting an electric washer/dryer as opposed to propane. A propane generator sucks up the gas big time. With the price of propane, it might be cheaper in my case to do electric. Thoughts anyone?

As far as the all electric future, remember brown outs in the summer? PG&E telling us customers to not come home after work and turn on the AC, start the dish washer, and don’t do laundry in the “peak” hours. Come home, sit in the dark and sweat like a stuffed pig because PG&E simply cannot meet demand. Solution: Create more demand! Experience ‘Range Anxiety’ if you have a EV.

Remember all those PG&E pickups that proudly displayed on their sides and backs that they were filled by natural gas? I believe it was T- Bone Pickins who prompted and invested in natural gas powered big rigs as the way of the future and to cut our dependence on foreign oil. Every pickup truck in America comes with a 30 gallon ‘propane’ tank in its bed. Look at me, I am gasoline free, you heathens.

Imagine all those people who called their propane company right BEFORE the last snow storm and are waiting, waiting, waiting and the company phone says I have called after hours (business hours, lol). They are swamped and I don’t even know if propane companies can even get their big storage tanks refueled. Truckee gas stations went dry.

Yes, I am waiting for things to get back to normal, but realize anything that happens to me is considered a non-emergency in my mind. He who hesitates is last. Turned off the propane heat yesterday to stretch it until things get back to normal. A great excuse not to take a shower in a cold humble abode. I should have called two-three weeks ago.

Little froggie did not bury himself in the mud in the pond but instead chose to frolic and play. Then when the pond froze over, little froggie could not get to the mud in the bottom of the pond and froze to death. A sad story. None one to blame except myself. If not 100% off-grid, it wouldn't surprise me if electric dryers are a better bet than a propane dryer. When the power is down, string up a clothesline ya lazy bastid.

As we descend in Kunstler's 'Long Emergency' and the US becomes a Third World Country, those of us in the favelas have to think in terms of all types of supply chain issues, be it power, gas, water, or Amazon Chinesium items. Sitting in the semi-dark is a good opportunity to think about what's practical instead of what's fun-to-buy.

Nothing to do with your washer, I'll just exercise my logorrhea a bit...

My own take is to stay away from great big all-in-one solutions. Permanent generators (which probably fail in a pinch) whoofing up great gobs of natgas or propane, Tesla Powerwalls and $50k worth of panels that don't work when it's cloudy, 'lectric cars that take a week to recharge from your panels. Best to have bog simple solutions that provide varying abilities. Multiple methods for cooking, lighting, heating, providing and purifying water, removing merde, internet/phone. Nothing expensive. Wing it when excitement happens.

When you are cooking exclusively with propane canisters, one feels a proper fool if the shelf at the hardware store only has butane. There's always a run on the necessaries and you'll never be first.

What I need to work on is an easy way to siphon gas from a modern car. It's the perfect way to store generator fuel.

I have grown tired of the pressure to get a washer and dryer….from other people (guests). They always say the same thing: “Why don’t you take some of your money and buy a washer and dryer.” I wash by hand hand and like Jo Ann Rebane, I hang the old socks and tee shirts out in the breeze with its sun-kissed smell. Fresh as a daisy.

“Why don’t you take some of your money…..and make it more convenient for us!”, is what they are really saying. Or, Biker Bill, why don’t you take some of that piles of money you have and buy a new car, new pick-‘em-up truck, a new workshop, new clothes, new this, new that. Oh, folks are great at telling me how I should spend all that money.

I was at the Grocery Outlet once and this fine looking woman my age came over when I was grabbing some butter…Land O’ Lakes butter. She told me that I grabbed unsalted butter and I should..must…. buy salted butter. I told her I was grabbing butter and don’t care if it is unsalted or not. She insisted that I buy salted butter and even tried to put my butter back and grab me salted butter, being certain that I would like it better. “Great”, I thought, “another woman I don’t know telling me what I should buy and how to spend other people’s money. She was good looking, seemed to be nice woman, but was disappointed I did not take her well intentioned advice.

At another store when I used to buy flavored creamer, this lady approached me and told methat creamer ruins the taste of coffee. So, you don’t like the taste of coffee, looking down her nose at me. Hmm. Thank you for your unsolicited advise, Madam Control Freak

When that flavored coffee creamer went over two bucks a bottle, I simply stopped bothering to buy it. Too expensive.

What, some of us were raised by Depression babies. Still save soap bar slivers in a dish….although it is probably the wrong kind of soap. :)

Recently when someone came over and told me that I should take some of all that money and buy myself this or that (like a large screen TV or new vacuuming cleaner or build a new shop/barn) I was feeling rather mischievous, said, “Hang on, let me look at the Stock Market.” I pretended to look at the market which I don’t follow anymore or really care what it was been doing lately and said, “The market says I am a not a millionaire today, but I am still the same person!”

And get this. The State of California just sent me a check for 600 clams, unsolicited and unappreciated. WTF?? Oh yeah, I am so frugal that my income says I am a poor folk. I will just take that 600 bucks and toss it in the drawer instead of buying a new washer or TV. I will probably just donate it to someone or some organization…like the Northern Cal Burn Association that helps kids that have been burned badly in fires and sends them to some summer camp.

I will probably just donate it to someone or some organization…like the Northern Cal Burn Association that helps kids that have been burned badly in fires and sends them to some summer camp.

scenes

" probably the wrong kind of soap."

an odd thing, that. The Proctor & Gambles of the world have convinced everyone they need many many kinds of soap. Hand, shampoo, mechanics, bar, laundry, dish, dishwasher, maybe stuff for the car. All with special secret ingredients that makes it pH balanced, fresh and fragrant and non-fragrant. Bed Bath and Beyond is always the last to close in a dead mall, the cockroach of the retail world.

Thank God the Land O' Lakes Lady is gone. You'd sure hate to see a cute Native American chick on a product, it causes impure thoughts. Team Blue needs to keep their Precious Bodily Fluids in check so removing beauty from the world is a Prime Directive.

There's something to be said for the last generation of electricityless lifestyle appliances. A well-made wringer washer isn't so bad (the van lifers have their own versions), the dryer is simplicity itself, and having lived in houses equipped for it, wood heat only and wood cooking stoves (good ones) work a treat. If I were to purposefully go off-grid, the house would be built around availability of burning stuff and low need for power (lights, TV, computer). Spending $50k on panels/batteries for a thing that operates for 1-2 days on cloudy days is a no-go. I'd like to see a water system here based on catchment rather than a well, it isn't like there's a real shortage.

lmfao If they didn't have bad luck, they'd have no luck at all department.

whoa. wait a minute. So this sounds like they have an installed generator that the autostart doesn't work on now. gotta jump start the thing. (I'm assuming 'Generic' is 'Generac', although with the Chinesium content, they're probably all from the same factory with the same components, maybe Generic is the right name).

This is my take. To entertain white educated Lefties, they done erased the Red Man. Friggin libs. Got rid of Land-o-Lakes young maiden and then done flushed Chief Wahoo down the toilet. That one hurt. Like a knife in the chest. White Man erasing us. Lake o Lakes had nice bright artwork…. for a butter package….drawn by a Native America. But, Chief Wahoo! The face everyone loved. His face said, ”Let’s play ball!” He was the face of the American Baseball Fan. Beloved whether one was a Cleveland fan or not.
I miss the bright shining face of Aunt Jemima smiling back at me from the cupboard. If she can’t put a smile on your face, then….ah, fiddlesticks to the barber.

Saw a great interview during the erasing of Uncle Ben and the Land O’Lakes girl…than Tear Down The Statues frenzy. Odd fad.
Anyway, they were interviews some native Navajo out in the desert and they said they would love to have their name on a sports team. They all nodded and agreed that that would kinda cool. Yeah, that would be cool. It would be cool people wearing Arizona Navajo jerseys. All upside, when you think about it.

Shapiro said if they ever come up with a team called the New York Jews…heck yes, he would be wearing his New York Jews jerseys in all his travels. That would be cool, he thought about with a twinkle in his eye….just like the Navajo did when interviewed.

Anybody want to play shirts and skins? Now, that a nice fad.

Re: A good scout is always prepared.

What have we learned from this recent snowfall? Some have learned that it is best to do a little routine maintenance in the summer or early fall. Charge up those AC or Marine batteries and get them ready, change spark plugs, change oil and clean filters on 4cycle old portable (and loud) generators if you got one, test firing , run it for a half hour or so and make sure that baby starts by the 3rd pull next time. Lol. Not a good idea to have to dig it out from the side of the house in a snowstorm only to find it not working. No start, no workie.

That little generator my guests bought (6,000 watts) was so small and light and fired right up and they are singing it’s praise. Got em’ through til power came on….think they said it will be today. Sounds like they made a good one for half the size. Found it at the 5th place they looked….in Yuba City…and a lower price that I would expect.

Scenes. You almost gave me a heart attack. It’s the big one, Elizabeth. 50k for two days of power? Are for friggin nuts? One should take that 50k and buy himself a good……. :)

“Tesla Powerwalls and $50k worth of panels that don't work when….” Full stop. I barely had the strength to read beyond that. Whew. Let me catch my breath. Imagine people sending 50k for two days of power.
——————
Here is advice I hold back on because some idiot might read this and burn the whole place down or die of monoxide poisoning. Or take a big swig off the Clorox jug. A nice long pull.

Once, when a big tree brough came crashing down on my little trailer in the woods, breaking windows in the middle of a big snowstorm and walking out (the bough landed in right in front of the truck and was as high as the hood….a widow maker for sure…I shared my tale of wow with a true old-timer. He said take a metal coffee can, turn it on its side, put a small candle in there and point the can at you. It will radiate heat towards you. Did and it worked. Took the edge off of the freezing you ass off.

Disclaimer: this was in a very well ventilated place (to say the least) and the Coffey can was placed on a good hard flat surface on a ceramic plate with no curtains or paper around pointing towards my noggin. Worked in a pinch. 50k??? lol.

Hey, where is jon jon Oz wiggly bragging about his super duper power wall this year?

May we never boast like that. Too many witnesses. Paul seems grumpy lately. Oh well, that will pass.

scenes

"Tesla Powerwalls and $50k worth of panels that don't work when….” Full stop."

I slightly misstated. I meant $50k worth of Tesla Powerwall and panels.

The panels obviously aren't worth much when covered with snow (I can't say that I like the idea of a roof mount anyhow) or when you get a day of cloudystormyrainy weather...or two...or a week.

I don't doubt that people can limp along if it's sunny every other day and they keep their usage down.

Average daily use in CA is what? 20kWh? Roughly two new Powerwalls if you build in some slack since, no doubt, you don't want to run them down to 0%. Call it $17k (I think) installed. That's one day. Of course, you still need a power source. Like PGE, or a bunch of panels/mounts/wires/magic boxes, or a Harbor Freight generator.

I might be offbase on all this, but it looks hard to avoid the issue of .5 - $1 per watt hour for storage. You need a pretty big buffer to deal with the vagaries of weather and PGE.

Don't get me wrong, I really like the idea of battery-based backup power for a house. Keep it full with a generator that runs only part of the day if needed during an outage, you don't need as much peak capacity in the generator. It's just that batteries are still a bit expensive. Same problem with cars.

Keeping the house going at full 'lectric goodness is hard. The slave to Reddy Kilowatt is tracking down roughly 5 gallons of gas per day or slurping up quite a lot of propane or natgas with a great roaring machine running the whole time...or hooking up a small Honda inverter unit to their freezer and TV and calling it good.

Scenes. In many cities to our northeast and north east east, it is the law that one must shovel the sidewalk/pathway in front of the house…your house. If not, you will get a citation. Get on it you sluggard.

The real reason one should clear the snow off quickly and repeatedly in breaks is because after then snow gets trampled down by passerbys walking their dogs is because once it starts going through the freeze, melt, freeze melt cycle….it’s all a layer of hard hard smashed down ice under the white stuff and that is hard to get off. The shovel becomes an ice pick with little pieces breaking off a small piece at a time. Much easier to just to push the snow off and toss in in your front yard or up the sides of the driveway. Because it you wait too long, temps will be dropping to 6 degrees tonight without a cloud in the sky. Black ice baby and the slickest spot is that place where the refugees of the storm have trod on…trudged through, trodded(?):

That is why God made ice melt and/or tons of sand. All for that bottom layer which is much more dangerous to step on than snow.

Then, there is always the Newbie who comes up to help the folks or enjoy his first Winter Wonderland in Nevada County, fires up the new snow blower, and proceeds to clear the driveway by blowing all that white stuff into the middle of the street. Ass hat.

Many moons ago I was coming down from the top of Banner, driving slowly because I was in a cargo van unchained and was making my way slowly down the hill with the automatic in 2nd and breaking only in critical spots like dry spots under trees and finally I (seemed like forever) made it out of the deep snow and just above Gayle Lane I came around a curve where some newbies had blown all snow into the street and as I came around the blind curve, I hit that pile the snow on the previously plowed road and as they used to say, “got sideways”. . Their driveway was cleared and the spin outs in front of their house and cars smashing into the trees….well, what did they care. Probably inside making hot toddies in blissful ignorance. Not only did the chap clear his driveway, hen also blew all the snow from the front yard into the street. Uncool.

The forced one does not sound like he has a sidewalk in front nor the desire to pick up the ole scoop shovel. Slow down! There’s old men and dogs on this street!
—————————
My recent guests, after leaving, went over to an elderly neighbors house and with shovels, dug the lady’s car out, which was parked next to the garage. Dug the car out and cleared the steep driveway to the street with one their neighbors also helping dig out rich woman on the hill. Not the whole driveway, but a path to get out.

She paid them 600 bucks! Easy come, easy go. She must be po folk :). If there were not some young teenagers out there walking down the road without snow shovels, they just missed out on some spending money. College fund money or X-Box money. Fufu creamer money.

I don’t know how much folks pay a kids to shovel out their driveways nowadays, but I was shocked to find out one guy (with friend) were making 60 bucks a driveway back in the way. The going rate then was about 20- 30 bucks.
One lady paid them $75.00 dollars with tip! You get 3 teenagers knocking on doors of the unshoveled (sticks out like a sore thumb) and the young and virile and can knock out 4-5 driveways by 3 o’clock. Better life lesson that remote learning.

The worse story I have heard so far is a tree on a house, residents unharmed yet in need to get the tree off the house ASAP. Roof repair needed now, power (even if on) cannot go back up until tree is cleared off the roof. They were charged $5,200 just to get that tree cut up and off the roof. Clean up of limbs and tree not included in price. Homeowners responsibility, later gator. We got ourselves a Class 1 emergency doing on. Wonder how much their homeowners will got went after filing that claim. Insurance will cover it, lol.
