WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A senior member of the U.S. team negotiating with Iran has left the role amid a report of differences of opinion on the way forward, as the urgency to salvage the 2015 Iran nuclear deal intensifies.

A State Department official confirmed on Monday that Richard Nephew, U.S. Deputy Special Envoy for Iran, is no longer on the negotiating team, but was still a State Department employee. The official did not give a reason for the change but said personnel moves were 'very common' a year into an administration.

The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that Nephew left after differences of opinion within the U.S. negotiating team on Iran. The paper said he had advocated a tougher posture in the current negotiations.

I did have to laugh at this line:

"The apology is an important reminder that the traditional role of journalism has been “an independent monitor of power,” not a mouthpiece for power."

You know, I think they actually believe this.

Of course journalism is a mouthpiece for power, it's just that there's always more than one warring camp.

I was kind of hoping for them to impeach The Big Guy a couple of times.

True that. One man and his Twitter machine could tweet something mean at 3:30 am and get the Lefty media all wiped into a stark raving frenzy for a couple of days….and the headline the day before got pushed to the side….meaning as they were melting down, Trump blow that headline off the front pages and got some things done.

He is the Man when it comes to keeping all the focus on himself. One of a kind. Whether it is pure political genius or just a combative nature, or just a big showman or combinations with Barman and Bailey references……. folks will write serious books about in 15 years from now.
Today we are in it! We are living through this unsettled period. ‘And you were there.’
One man got his Twitter machine confiscated. With no 3:00 am mean tweets to lead the news off every day, the focus has turned to Biden in a search to fill the void. History may also judge the decision to take away the Twitter Machine from Orange Man turned out to be a catastrophe error.
Just imagine how much better Biden would be doing in the polls if all the focus was on Trump’s tweets. One of a kind for sure…..with one arm tied behind his back just to make it fair.

True on the Covid…C19 topic…the Corona Cervesa thang. However, there does seem to be something going on at school board meetings across the fruited plains where the policies of vaxxing/N95ing primary and middle school children AND what the malarkey is being taught to the same said children. Two rivers meet at the confluence. The two are under the umbrella of ‘who is public ed’s client?

That answer to that question is being played out as we speak. Who is the school’s client? Some foolish toothless hillbillies think they actually have a say in their chilluns health, school learning, and welfare. So, there is some crossover going down when adding chillun to the mix. The matrix is not perfect.

Just thought I would point that out before saying your wish is my commando.

Don Bessee

I am sure they are quaking in their boots -

George Rebane

BillT 1244pm - This probably belongs under its own topic Mr Tozer, but I'd like to draw attention to the 'who is public ed's client?' topic. History teaches us that in the US as in other European countries during the 19th century, their publics and their governments began realizing the benefits of an educated populace. In the US government funded public schools became universal in the latter part of the 1800s with the clear proviso that public ed's client was the country's citizenry or general public, because it was they who paid for the public schools and supposedly benefitted from a more educated workforce that the schools graduated. This attitude became calcified as the 20th century matured even though local school boards hired/fired staff and approved curricula. Today we add the Left's hubris that the common man is not qualified to weigh in on their kids' education, as with other laws, regs, codes coming from on high, education (most certainly the curriculum) should also be left to the elitist experts.

The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, however, refused to prosecute either the father or son with hate crime enhancements and agreed to a lenient plea deal with Tanner Sr., who pled guilty to a misdemeanor battery charge for no jail time and only a year of probation — all without Lê’s knowledge.

In addition to failing to notify Lê of plea deal discussions, the District Attorney’s Office allegedly also failed to provide him a chance to enter a victim impact statement during the proceedings. Consequently, no such statement was read at the plea deal hearing.

Additionally, the office allegedly refused to correct a Criminal Protective Order (CPO) that omitted Lê’s last name — identifying him only as “Anh L” — and misstated his age. Such errors led to Lê doubt the enforceability of the order.

Lê spent months trying to correct the CPO, but his requests have fallen on deaf ears, according to him. Even after retaining pro bono counsel, the District Attorney’s Office allegedly continued to ignore him, even telling him at one point that he had no right to be at hearings.

Lê, who is represented by King & Spalding LLP — a member of the Alliance for Asian American Justice — is now suing the District Attorney’s Office under the Fourteenth Amendment. He is accusing the office of applying procedures that resulted in discriminatory effects on Asian Americans and creating practices that deny victims adequate due process protections.

Taking a bird’s eye view, the lack of additional Russian natural gas supplies to Turkey, combined with the Iranian technical issues, which came shortly after Russian president Putin met with Iran’s leaders in Moscow, could be playing a larger role than many analysts may think. Hitting Turkey, or at least putting Ankara in a difficult position, might be part of the greater strategy of the Moscow-Tehran tandem. Bringing Turkey to a part standstill is also a major setback to any Turkey-NATO support for Ukraine in the coming weeks.

Turkish traders are being quoted saying that Turkish company BOTAS has issued a gas curtailment order to domestic gas power plants. Turkish power plants will only be receiving around 60% of the contracted volumes.

Turkey’s president Erdogan has not only been pushing for a central role in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which is currently reaching boiling point. Erdogan has also been very opportunistic in his approach, on one side trying to be a mediator between Kiev and Moscow, while at the same time becoming one of Ukraine’s main arms suppliers. Moscow will not be looking at this without anger, as Turkish drones have been deployed before against Russian military actors, for example in the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict. Turkey is also pushing for a strong position inside of Syria, confronting Russia and Iran-Hezbollah-IRGC forces on several occasions.

Don Bessee

And meanwhile in the western hemisphere -

Cuba and Venezuela were dragged into the drama surrounding the conflict earlier this month after Russia’s deputy foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov, told a Russian television station that he could “neither confirm nor exclude” potential military deployments to the two Latin American nations.

BREAKING: MSNBC Bizarrely Pretends Retiring Stephen Breyer Is ‘Conservative or Moderate’

Bill Tozer

We’re Lesbians on the Autism Spectrum. Stop Telling Us to Become Men

Scott O

re Breyer's retirement. I'm making no predictions but this would be the perfect opportunity to be rid of Kamala as veep. As a SCOTUS justice she really wouldn't have to do anything but vote the party line and keep out of sight. And the powers-that-be would now be able to install a new veep who would be palatable to the US public as a very needed replacement for the quickly failing Biden.
Stay tuned.

Breyer hasn't made an announcement and is said to be pissed.

It would be juicy if he was pissed because he wasn't planning on it, and instead told everyone to go home, he was staying and didn't care to retire based on the politics du jour.

Breyer is an independent old coot, and I could see him doing just that.

Bill Tozer

MSNBC? Figures. News busters just follows Government TV and reports on what they report. NPR did no better with their story on Justice G refusing to don a face diaper in the chambers. Had no idea how old and sickly the diabetic associate justice Sonia was.

Well, she could lose a few pounds. Overweight folks have a 40% higher chance of kissing the farm goodbye than…er…..say people with a more of the average Body Mass Index. But to point that our is probably not proper to say…especially considering our nation is going through an obesity crisis….a true National Security concern. Young recruits have just too many pounds they carry around….not fit. But heavily tattooed is now ok. Trade offs.

Wonder if Breyer said the news if ‘false’ just like Justice Roberts and Neil and Sonia called the NRP story.

You take the phrase with a negative connotation and move on to a new one.

Conversely, you take bad words like fascism, bend them beyond recognition to a 1920's Italian, and apply them to anyone indulging in crimethink.

By the same token, I personally think (YMMV) that applying Communism and related descriptions to this thing emerging from the swamp is lazy thinking. There's simply too many differences between the Woke people and either the early Soviet Union or what used to be leftist thinking in the US. Even though my thumbs are pricking, an agreed-upon naming convention would be nice.

Bill Tozer

Scenes: what is YMMY? Enquiring minds would like to know. I am falling behind and need you to stay on the cutting edge to help this brother out.

Well, Joy Behar did confuse free speech with corporate speech, but at least she tried. Did like how she referenced Cablevision, a former pioneer pay TV cable company that once was a household name. The script translators called it cable vision because….well, frankly…because they are younger than Joy. I still to this day have a refrigerator magnet from a prior time and era that says, TCI Cablevision. Purple. Anywho, it made me smile seeing cable vision, not Cablevision, spelled out. Yes, a very minor point. I need to listen to that again on my record player since the reel to reel went on the fritz.

"Scenes: what is YMMV"

Yer mileage may vary. ie. others may feel differently.

alternately, 'you mothas might violentlydisagree" I suppose.

George Rebane

Not to worry, ‘communism’ has always come like Heinz - in ‘57 varieties’ - so take it as an umbrella term for collectivism beyond socialism and fascism. Its de minimalist criteria are that the state owns all real estate and means of production/distribution, which means it’s the universal employer.

Scott O

re what to call it now: What it looks and feels like is left-wing authoritarian crony capitalism with a heapin' helpin' of increasing socialism.
But that won't fit on a bumper sticker and it hardly rolls off the tongue. Can't think of anything snappy right now. I'll just settle for leftists. Please stop calling them 'liberals'. They are anything but.
The Facists under Il Duce came close but they at least loved their country. Probably too much - a lot like the US in the late 1800s. We loved our country soooo much we thought it would be cool to make a lot more of it. Then we realized that was a mistake. Those folks didn't want to be Americans in their part of the world - they wanted to be Americans in America.

Scott O

Remember waaaay back when Biden was the adult in the room? The sane, sensible, centrist that defeated the course-talking mean-tweeter? The one that brought civility to politics once again and brought us together as a nation?
Well, it seems the REAL Biden is emerging and boy is it great!
Does the left even care that they are such openly, obvious hypocrites?

"Does the left even care that they are such openly, obvious hypocrites?"

The Frankfurt School's Herbie Marcuse solved that in the 1960's with his treatise, "Repressive Tolerance".

Bill Tozer

‘Betraying the American people’: Leaked video reveals Joe Biden’s ‘hush hush’ migrant invasion

"re what to call it now: What it looks and feels like is left-wing authoritarian crony capitalism with a heapin' helpin' of increasing socialism."

My own take, not completely dissimilar I think.

The understanding and description of the 'Left' tends to come from too economic a viewpoint, people tend to fight the last war.

The 'economics' of the modern Left is the economics of vultures fighting over a carcass. A coalition of self-interested agents inventing a policy of consumption without production. The better to eat you with my dear, in the immortal words of The Wolf.

I think of Marxists as people who began with a policy and pounded (and pounded) round pegs into square holes by the millions. Of course, Day Two of Marxism is individuals competing for status. Everyone always wants the good lookin' wimmen and gold, if not, they are soon replaced by the more ambitious.

The end result may be the same, those mass graves don't fill themselves after all, but the roots of the two smell different to me.

re: Free speech and whatnot.

Crazytown vs. Substack

"As the latest anti-Substack campaign shows, more and more people are forgetting why free speech works"

If the folks running Substack (probably viewed as Reichsleiters by The Woke) were smart, and I'll bet they are, they'd have all of their internet substrate done in/at companies and places that are pressure-proof. No advertisers is an additional strength. I'd say that VISA tends to be the weak spot for anything depending on payment. As an aside, a strong argument can be made for a stable widespread cryptocurrency in it's independence from political pressure.

Scenes 746am

It is leftist. Meaning Marxist v.4...

Gone is the old fashioned dictatorship of the proletariat stuff.

This is cultural Marxism courtesy of the co-founder of the Communist Party of Italy, Antonio Gramsci, whose Prison Diaries pointed the way forward. We probably have Mussolini to blame for this as he tossed Gramsci in prison to rot but let him write... had the prison killed him or had he been left free, Stalin would have killed him after he dealt with that other apostate, Trotsky.

Cultural Marxism was taken up by the Frankfurt School and a momentous touchstone on the path was Max Horkheimer's "Traditional and Critical Theory" in 1937... the way to raise the prole's ire when they're happy is to first make them unhappy. Brilliant!

Then in the '60's we have Frankfurt's Herbie Marcuse filling heads with important drivel like Repressive Tolerance and Chairman Mao killing perhaps 100 million of his fellow Chinese in the (wait for it...) Cultural Revolution where they did their best to destroy what was China in order to save it.

It took longer in the USA to get here in a longer ramble through our institutions, but here we are. CRT has gotten folks pissed off, Critical Pedagogy is rotting our schools, Critical Gender has us confused, Critical everything is screwing us and driving us nuts.

Kudos to the late Professor Joseph Buttigieg, a noted translator of Gramsci and the founder of The International Gramsci Society. His son, Mayor Pete, is his legacy.

Scott O

scenes 10:04 - "The understanding and description of the 'Left' tends to come from too economic a viewpoint, people tend to fight the last war."
Maybe, but money still matters. Obviously, it's ultimately just power and in a communist type of system there's no need (at the top) for money.
Castro officially had a very small income but lived a lavish lifestyle because he had power. If he wanted something, he could just order it. But even the commies found they needed hard currency to keep the machine oiled and fed. That's why the current regime in China has done so well. They had the power and cultural authoritarian part down and just needed to ramp up the capitalism part. The west (mostly) had the capitalism part down and running slick - all that was needed was to start ratcheting up the cultural authoritarian part. The big McCarthy "witch hunt" hoo-ha in the 50s was piddly. There really were commies in the US out to do us harm. The over-reach just stepped on the wrong toes. The massive over-reach of today's CRT, cancel-culture, corporate knee-bending and govt corruption has the correct target. The average citizen.
And how is it played?
Money, honey.
China finally found the magic rope to sell us so we could hang ourselves. Actually, it seems we designed the damn thing. All they had to do was go along quietly for a while and cash the checks.
The final point I will make on this happy topic is that we can point to all kinds of precursors and origins and folks-that-got-it-right, but the world has so darn many moving parts that I doubt anyone can ever really predict how it will turn out even a year from now, beyond that there will be blood eventually.
Things do move faster now in the electronic age. The folks that are in power and manage to stay in power these days are like day traders vs the old long-term investors.
The quick and the dead.
And that is actually a very old saying.

re: Gregory@10:36AM

Proletariat is bound to be gone since plain old workers seem thin on the ground in Crazytown.

I wonder sometimes about causalities in political writers -> political movements. Sometimes it sounds plausible, sometimes it seems like a survivor's bias where a fringe intellectual movement happens to agree with tenets of a later mass movement. Coincidence? Handy justification used by inventors of history? 1:1 relationship? I'm never sure.

Having just finished a learned tome on the history of the Cultural Revolution, the actual philosophy still seems rather unclear, aside from the sheer joy of destruction of course. Self-interest, as usual, figured large, but that's just primates doing their primate thing. You can always count on the Two Commandments...Greed and Fear.

Sccenes, you might consider "Cynical Theories" by Pluckrose and Lindsey to get a handle on how we got here.

"Castro officially had a very small income but lived a lavish lifestyle because he had power."

True dat, as the saying goes.

From Viktor Suvorov (Vladimir Rezun), 'The Liberators'

"Before the arrival in Severodvinsk of Marshal of the Soviet Union
Grechko, the high command of the Northern Fleet decided to paint the
shore-line cliffs grey. In all, over twenty kilometres of coastline were
painted. The sailors of two whole divisions and the men of a marines
regiment laboured over this titanic work for several weeks and, in the
process, used up the whole allocation of anti-corrosion paint supplied to
the entire fleet for a whole year. The Minister liked the colour of the
rocks, and from that time forth the painting of rocks before the arrival of
a high-ranking commander became one of the more remarkable traditions
of our Fleet."

That, my friends, is power.

And then how the Left and its lamestream lambasted and prohibited effective and cheap prophylactics and therapeutics recommended by the Right, causing the unnecessary deaths of hundreds of thousands.

Scott O

Give it up, George. Paul is an idiot. He has no conception of reality beyond his hate for Trump.

In other news:
Oh, my! And they had such good intentions.
Who could have possibly foreseen this outcome?
Any bets on anyone actually being prosecuted?
Maybe the janitor.

Don Bessee

I was in the board of supervisors annual 3 day planning meeting and heard the homeless report where they briefed the BOS that they have placed all homeless minors, so none were on the street. OK so then why did this happen? A million bucks for something that the county has already dealt with??

What dimension is Emery in? The experts don't see it the way Emery does.
Biden inherited secure borders, energy independence, no inflation, a won war,
and world respect. Then managed to flush it all down the crapper in one week.

Emery is just punching the softest spots he can find of the folks he opposes. That's what he does. Over and over.

Punchy punches.

Just a one trick ponytail.

DonB, referring to a roughly $1M grant 'for the homeless'.

"A million bucks for something that the county has already dealt with??"

There's always more jobs to be created. A fully burdened employee is not a trivial thing and a million bux doesn't go that far. No doubt the money will flow into supervisors and case workers and offices and a coffee machine, none of which will make much difference.

Hang on. I'll look at the article.

“By and large, this promotes and supports staffing,” said Bright Futures for Youth Executive Director Jennifer Singer on the grant. “This is a high needs population, and we need more case management support of those youth to ensure that none of them are falling through the cracks.”

Generally, I'd say that you can't go wrong being cynical.

Remember…..you cant spell “embezzle” without BLM.

BLM's millions unaccounted for after leaders quietly jumped ship

Newspeak word o' the day.

Racism: The marginalization and/or oppression of people of color based on a socially constructed racial hierarchy that privileges white people.

Yer welcome.

“Punchy punches.” But, but, but Punch said he was like Ali, just waiting for his opponents to punch themselves out before delivering the knock out punch. I see the rope-a-dope, I see the dope on the rope, but I have yet to see the knockout punch.

Darn. This is not how I wanted to start my day…discussing Paul Emerybot before the first cup of non-foo foo coffee goes down the hatch.

Me thinks the Governors….the Blue State governors really trashed the economy. Trump did not close down one single beer bar or restaurant or live music event in all of Nevada City……. or Frisco. Trump did not once say, “Lock ‘‘em up.” Gavin did, while dining in the French Laundry, one of the most expensive restaurants and highest rated restaurants in the world. The lock downs our governor ordered did not affect him in the least. Funny how that works. It’s all Trump’s fault. Trump should have NEVER listened to the WHO who said the Plague was not contagious…might be nothing…

Good catch on the spelling. I'll update my Webster's dictionary (using the loose leaf pages that came with it). Been getting a workout over the last 10 years; 7 different entries so far just for 'woke'.

‘Hippies for censorship’
Neil Young’s grumpy war on Joe Rogan is a betrayal of everything he once stood for.

Some old folks get fretty and grumpy, others get sweeter and wiser.

Speaking of Rogan and boxing and the like, I had to remember this.

I would pay good money to watch it. That Mr. Cenk would be writing a check he couldn't cash is a near certainty.

Remember teenage lifeguard Joe Biden wrapping a chain around his wrist to take on the hoodlum Corn Pop, a very bad dude? Remember on the campaign trail Joe Biden challenging those who dare ask questions to a push up contest? Remember Joe Biden calling a young lady out after she said she had indeed been to a caucus as dog faced pony soldier? Poor thing, she was a Democrat. Remember Joe Biden challenging any one in the room to to match IQs with his? Joe Biden, the guy who finished 76 out of a class of 84 or something close. 71st out of 79?

What I remember most about Biden, besides claiming his helicopter had to make an emergency landing after been in hot zone receiving end of hell fire, was Joe Biden saying in 2018 that he would beat the stew out of Trump behind the gym.

Mr. McMann could arrange that. One punch to Biden’s nose and Harris would be President in a 2 days. Man e mano. Is it time to call a lid on the day. It is approaching nap time on the East Coast.

BillT@8:23 "Neil Young’s grumpy war on Joe Rogan is a betrayal of everything he once stood for."

"...It’s worth paying attention to just how disordered Mr. Young’s thinking is because it summarizes everything that has gone awry on the political Left: He is wrong two ways: 1) morally, and 2) on the facts of the matter — which is as wrong as you can be. Like virtually everyone on the Democratic Party / Woke / Progressive axis, he is obviously in favor of suppressing free speech. Since when did that become okay for old hippies?

If I remember correctly (cuz I was there) the youth movement of the 1960s was all about freedom to say pretty much anything, except yell “fire” in a crowded theater — based on the idea that ordinary people were equipped to sort out the truth. During the War in Vietnam, we hippies were especially averse to the official lying that emanated from the Department of Defense, the FBI, the CIA, and the White House under both Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon. We founded “alternative” newspapers in defiance of the establishment’s propaganda. We applauded Daniel Ellsberg’s purloined Pentagon Papers, revealing the mendacity of the war effort. Altogether, this activity made it more difficult for the government to prosecute that war, and to defend the strategy behind it.

Today the Left is not only all-in on speech suppression, but also censorship of print and broadcasting, and is especially avid for the diverse punishments of cancellation — ruining careers, reputations, livelihoods, and families of anyone who opposes Woke right-think. Alternate views are not tolerated, labeled “unacceptable” (Mr. Young put it exactly that way), and flagged as “misinformation” (ditto Mr. Young). It’s gotten to the point where the word misinformation has acquired a distinct odor that signals bad faith in everyone who flogs it. These days, the charge of misinformation is deliberate misinformation. ..."

Why, why, why? Yes or no, yes or no.

Is Democracy Dying or America Disintegrating?

Scenes. Before I put Neil Young to rest, it does a seem like a lost of innocence is in play here. I, for one, would never ever consider censoring Neil Young. Not for a nanosecond.
Maybe the sixties are remembered as better than it was. A nice place to go to in one’s mind when facing the ugliness of today.

Set out to save the world, the down trodden, the oppressed. Stick it to the Man. Take that brand spanking new law degree and join Legal Aid. Then, over time, you end up defending scum you would never allow in your house.

Later, Gator. The outside calls were all is well…..

My, my. Now the supply chain is fascist. The supply chain thinks bad thoughts.

‘Washington Post Mocks Massive Canadian Trucker Convoy Protesting Vaccine Mandates, Labels Trucks ‘Fascism’

Breaker, breaker, I think we got ourselves a convoy. Driving over the Canadian Rockies in January takes some real motivation. 1.5 million Canooks descending on OTTAWA.

“That’s a 10-4 good Buddy. Crank up the Richard Pryor and keep your hammer down all the way to Boy-Toy town”.

Those Canadians are known for their politeness and civility…but not so much East of Saskatchewan. Their first request is to have Justin step aside and resign. Sounds reasonable to me. They are moving the catapults and barrels of hot tar into place. Exciting times, eh

From the article:

"“The movement shares an affinity with Trumpist toxic authoritarianist politics.”

“Time and time again we learn the lesson, or at least come across it, that teaches us that rage-soaked antigovernment types can’t be reasoned with,”"

OK, Paul..Steve Frisch...any other Progressive Green Libertarians...gimme a little help here. Just what is an antigovernment authoritarianist?
