George Rebane
Imagine a country that does not recognize the right of their citizens to revolt.
These thoughts were resurfaced by a comment from local leftwing cartoonist RL ‘Bob’ Crabb responding to ‘A Case for the Right of Revolution’. In it he accuses those of the Right of “blowing up what’s left of the constitution(sic)”, and seeking to install a tyrannical “new regime” that will imprison or execute “those of us who won’t swear fealty to the new regime.”
Bob shares these beliefs and worldview with most of the Democrat mainstream which has been inculcated in the country’s unionized leftwing public schools, with its tenets of received wisdom being reinforced daily by the country’s lamestream media. These millions of fellow Americans are no longer capable of questioning, let alone critiquing what they are fed in a never-ending stream of propagandized media reportage and ‘entertainment’.
They demand no evidence for the allegations they willingly consume as factual indictments of the Right. They can point to no part of the Constitution that has been ‘blown up’ by rightwing legislators, judges, or justices in the land. They demand nothing of their thought leaders save the gratuitously naked lies that the unrevealed evidence exists somewhere, always to be presented at the proper time – e.g. yearslong ‘evidence’ of Trump’s Russia collusion. Like the highland natives of Papua-New Guinea (here), the video corroborated evidence of a purposely open border is invisible to them as millions of illegal aliens continue to pour in daily. They have totally ignored the Left’s destruction of the black families launched with the onset of the Great Society policies. For them the loss of black lives by the thousands really doesn’t matter, which are noted only in their singletons or handfuls when it serves to support their overall anti-American narrative.
The Left’s grassroots have no clue of how their leaders and elites have trashed our Constitution, and constantly make the case for its irrelevance, lack of currency, and need for a total overhaul or rewrite. All this to foster and enable the country’s progress toward a centrally planned and controlled state under the governance of an implausibly expensive and behemoth bureaucracy. The Right’s appeal and initiative for a minimally taxing and regulating small government never impacts any inter-ear organ they may purport to have.
They continue their composed mantra that the Right is working to install a fascist state, without any understanding that fascism is a strong form of socialism that requires a very large government to monitor and master its masses. All the historical and day-to-day evidence of implemented and proposed rightwing policies to the contrary - e.g. reducing taxes and regulations, federalizing national imperatives - they just go on parroting the Democrat party line that the Right is the party of limiting freedoms no matter the impact of leftwing policies in force from Main Street to the nation’s capitals – they are incapable of simply considering how our freedoms have been ratcheted down by the growth of the US Code, regulatory burdens by the thousands, and bureaucracies of leftwing minions numbering in the millions.
And the piece de resistance of their imperturbably smug belief system is their view of those on the Right as a uniform mass of fundamentalist Christian, bible-thumping end-timers who are itching to “empty the nuclear arsenal on the heathens” while “convinced you are going to your great reward in heaven, (thereby) burning the planet shouldn’t cause you any pangs of guilt.”
So there you have it, the latest communication from the Left’s grassroots, that continues to bear witness to the utter void where we might find common ground between our polarized population, each side seeking to go in a direction that is a complete anathema to the other. There is no longer an opportunity to start a civil, let alone productive conversation. How do you answer someone like Bob Crabb who believes in the sanctified state against which no hand shall ever be raised?
RL has an elementary school playground view of politics, and he's not interested in a conversation. He has written in his blog that the smart folk on the Right and the Left need to settle down and settle their differences so the idiots who think they're in the middle can understand the world.

Nah. Crabb's not the problem. He's the best the lefties have to offer in a world where "The Left Can't Meme". He occasionally brings a smile to an editorial page that is normally revolting.
It's too soon to ask for a Crabb cartoon that suggests "Dpn't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out", but Aspen's loss may be our gain.
The town will be worse off if we don't have a local paper, and The Union is circling the drain. I'll be supporting any effort that gets the other half to reconsider supporting the paper and local business.

The irony is that they take such pride and self-satisfaction from thinking they are so independent. Ha! It's been awhile since I visited Crabbman's website, and was shocked to read his old friend, Chris Peterson had passed away.
Following the ancient advice to not speak ill of the dead, I thought I'd just give a link where folks could read Peterson's words as he wrote them:

Plenty of crap from the keyboard of Stephen Frisch is there also.

You really have to wonder how Crabb can complain that conservatives want to "blow up" the Constitution while from the Dems and the left we are hearing increasing calls to get rid of it while conservatives are mocked for "clinging" to an outdated document.
To say that Crabb is confused is being polite.
Lately an elected Dem in Washington (AOC) called for the elimination of the SCOTUS.
Gee - why not get rid of the solons as well and just have a dictator? Democratically elected of course!

FLASHBACK—LEFTIST RAGE ABOUT THE SUPREME COURT
Charming, as always. Of course, Tushnet did add this throwaway at the end:
“Of course all bets are off if Donald Trump becomes President. But if he does, constitutional doctrine is going to be the least of our worries.”
Actually it looks like the change in constitutional doctrine is going to be President Trump’s most significant legacy. No wonder leftists are so miserable right now. They think they are entitled to the Supreme Court.

America aches after 18 months of Biden and the Dems
“Biden has accomplished something extraordinary: For him to have dragged America this low, this quickly, is a real achievement, of a sort.
While Democrats scream "Racism!" "Abortion!" and "January 6!" Republicans can bury them in November by relentlessly asking voters this simple question: Are you better off now than you were two years ago?”

Amazing how the righteous right can justify the violent overthrow of an elected government and call it freedom, but then we're dealing with people who dismiss hours of testimony from fellow Republicans who were on the front lines of the January 6th debacle and claim it's all an elaborate hoax.
Oh, you'll still have a constitution, but those who don't toe the line will will become the 21st century's three-fifths of a person. How else could you keep your new republic from being corrupted?
So I'm confused? I've been right for most of the thirty-odd years I've been covering politics by pointing out that both sides have drifted so far away from the center that governing is next to impossible. Honest Abe was right on when he said a house divided cannot stand.
Maybe after you and the utopian left have killed each other off we "confused" moderates can rebuild a society that truly reflects diverse and dynamic democratic values.

Crabb - "Oh, you'll still have a constitution, but those who don't toe the line will will become the 21st century's three-fifths of a person."
Looks like the recreational drugs from the 60's are starting to kick back in. You're hallucinating, dude.
Just because a govt is 'elected' doesn't mean it's following the Constitution.
"I've been right for most of the thirty-odd years I've been covering politics by pointing out that both sides have drifted so far away from the center that governing is next to impossible."
In other words - if the left doesn't get their way, then 'governing' is impossible. Not every large city is a mess - only the ones run by the Dems. There are many states and cities doing just fine, thank you. No problems with governance.
Crabb thinks sitting in the 'middle of the road' and throwing rocks at all the cars going by makes him superior. Why doesn't Crabb give us specific 'middle of the road' solutions?
Here's an example - our nation has continued to pass one 'common sense' gun law after another just as the Dems have wanted and yet gun violence continues to grow. Criminals continue to obtain guns anytime they want.
Crabb's solution?

Glad to hear R L Crabb call the utopian left ‘the utopian left’. Righteous Righties? As Milo the gay Provocateur stated, the threat to the gay community used to be the Christian Right. Not so anymore. The real threat to the Pride Community is the Islamic community. Everyone has their own opinion, some based on life experiences, some based on ingrained pre-judgements, and some are programmed to react to certain stimuli and dismiss it out of hand. "why don't you enlighten me on what will be done with the vanquished masses once you've toppled their elected representatives?"
It would depend on how they act, wouldn't it?
If they accept the outcome and settle down to productive lives, they will find all the supposed horrors fabricated by people like Crabb will be pleasantly surprised to find the wonders of living a free life under the Constitution. There will still be all the same lefty media outlets spewing mis-information and lies, as well as Q-whatever and that sort putting out whatever they put out. There will be problems. Trying to find cheap illegal labor will be difficult, if not impossible. They can buy all the electric cars they want although they will not be able to pick some one else's pocket to help pay for it.
If they don't want to go along with a Constitutional govt then they can leave or maybe stay and grouse all they want, but rioting and arson will (shock, shock) no longer be allowed.
You know - middle of the road type of stuff, like you supposedly advocate for Crabb.

Posted by: Scott O | 18 July 2022 at 09:00 AM
Scottie 8:57pm - Just accept the outcome and settle down to productive lives. Uh huh. Sure thing. Americans are well known for rolling over at the point of a gun. Then election time rolls around and the unwashed masses reject your right wing paradise. Back to square one.
No, you'll have to do better than that. Re-education camps. Prisons. Censorship.
You'll end up with a banana republic that can only rule by force.
Now you want solutions? I don't have specifics, but Congress has dithered for decades on the questions of abortion, immigration, debt, etc., etc. Both parties insist on inserting poison pills into legislation because they can't risk offending their base. You can call it an oversimplification if you want, but thems the facts.
We are riding a seesaw government that alternates 51-49 every four years, each undoing anything the last majority passed. No way to run a country.
Posted by: rlcrabb | 18 July 2022 at 09:50 AM
RL 823am - "Vanquished masses"?? Does that mean that you see a civil war in our future in which the country's leftwingers will be vanquished? You can find the answer to your question in any real history book. What did the victorious Americans do with the 1/3 population of the colonies that remained loyalists to the crown during the revolution? What did the North do with the southern whites when they lost the 'civil war'? What did the English do with the Afrikaaners after Boer War? And I could go on, but you could enlighten yourself.
You and yours think that an armed rebellion by those on the Right will be some game of gratuitous gun violence executed by a ragtag bunch of anarchist rednecks. It will not. Any successful armed rebellion will involve the frustration-launched backing and participation by tens (hundreds?) of millions of Americans. It will not be a bunch of unarmed and confused rioters breaking into the Capitol. And the resulting constitutional government will be one familiar to those of us who grew up in post-war America. The only difference you'll witness is an enlightened attitude toward race, homosexuality, and even abortion.
Longtime readers of RR know that the Great Divide anticipated in these pages should occur through a lengthy negotiation between the country's Constitution-eschewing collectivists and their minions, and the open-market Constitution-conserving capitalists. There is no longer a middle - your own protestations withstanding. You have all the sentiments of a good-hearted but soft-headed leftwinger, as the lengthy record of your graphic and written output attests. You have neither witnessed nor studied the realworld results that come about when a regime starts its leftward slide. You have given every evidence of being devoted to Lenin's siren song of 'From everyone according to their abilities, and to everyone according to their needs.' Bastiat's triangle of rights is your terra incognita.

“Sit on the fence and you fall off. Stand in the middle of the road and you get run over,” says the old phrase. Unfortunately, the time has come where you are either for us or agin’ us.
I recall a great story from Ronald ‘Raygun’ Reagan. He had Tip O’Neil over in the White House after hours and the two of them shared a few drinks (more than one). Each told old stories and hit if off nicely. Yucked it up.
The next morning Reagan turns on the TV and there was ole Tip, Speaker of the House, on the floor ripping him a new one, tearing the President to shreds. So, Reagan picks up the phone afterwards and calls the Distinguished Congressman from MA asking him what that was all about. What the hay, Tip? What about last night?
Tip replied to the President that was last night, this morning it’s politics.
The Tip O’Neil-Reagan lasted for years. Reagan start calling Tip the Pillsbury Dough Man. Reagan was known to call Tip and say, “It’s after 6 now, you coming by? Lol. He knew the rules.
Those days are gone. It’s 24 hour politics now. “That was last night, this morning it’s politics.”
What possible agreement could the utopian left have with Righteous Right in 2022? Talking is done. Nothing left to say.
Repost from America’s real birthday, the 4th of July. This is how I see it.
“About the Declaration there is a finality that is exceedingly restful. It is often asserted that the world has made a great deal of progress since 1776, that we have had new thoughts and new experiences which have given us a great advance over the people of that day, and that we may therefore very well discard their conclusions for something more modern. But that reasoning can not be applied to this great charter. If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final. If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions. If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people. Those who wish to proceed in that direction can not lay claim to progress. They are reactionary. Their ideas are not more modern, but more ancient, than those of the Revolutionary fathers.“ —-Calvin Coolidge on the 150th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Coming by tonight? Didn’t think so.

from a very confused lad - "No, you'll have to do better than that. Re-education camps. Prisons. Censorship.
You'll end up with a banana republic that can only rule by force."
Sorry Crabb - censorship and re-education camps aren't allowed under the Constitution. You really must try to read it at least once.
Prisons? Oh heavens - pretty sure we have those already. Loot and burn - go to prison. Crabb has a problem with that?
As far as being a banana republic - pretty sure that's a lot of what we're seeing now. Parents who complain about openly racist and hate-based crap in their public schools are labeled as "terrorists". The FBI becomes an armed thug enforcer for the Dems. All govts rule by force, Crabb. Surely you must have noticed that by now. The question is what force? The force of Constitutional law applied equally to all including the Dems and the powerful wealthy? Or the force of pure democracy (mob rule)?
And lastly -
"Now you want solutions? I don't have specifics,..."
Could have sworn you had it all down correctly for decades - now you admit you ain't got bupkis.
As I said - you just want to sit in the middle of the road and throw rocks at all the cars while you bitch.
Enjoy!

I'm not surprised you mistake the "hours of testimony" for a real hearing. It is the equivalent of Stalinist show trial, only without the guys with guns waiting in the wings for the expected conclusion. Pelosi rejected the GOP nominees for the committee... it is the Pelosi show with the window of a Cheney to make it "bipartisan".

Posted by: Paul Emery | 18 July 2022 at 03:09 PM
George 10:19am - Some of my lefty friends still fantasize about splitting up the country, mostly joining California with Oregon and Washington in an Ecotopian wet dream. I always have to point out that the Democratic majority is mostly centered on the coastal counties, which means the big problem will be convincing those east of the Sacramento River to go along with the dividing boundary. Red counties will want to control the natural resources, leaving Ecotopia as a gaggle of disconnected city-states. Jefferson America can wall them off and do a Putin to their food and energy pipelines any time it suits their purposes.
I don't believe either side would be able to negotiate such a division in good faith.
Posted by: rlcrabb | 18 July 2022 at 03:13 PM
If the left would abide by Constitutional limits, there would be no need to "negotiate such a division", and in the meantime we have Gavin Newsom declaring California the state where the freedom to live the life the progressive left wants us all to live is at its highest.

Gregory - "If the left would abide by Constitutional limits, there would be no need to "negotiate such a division""
Ah, there's the rub. The Constitution is a harsh limit on govt power for the totalitarians.
Little by little the left has been skirting around the edges, chipping away here and there. Wars, disasters and pandemics are welcomed by the left as opportunities to seize ever more power and control. The big one is the issue of "entitlements" by the feds. They're great vote getters for both parties and paying for them is always just around the corner. The founders warned about the fed govt getting in the business of handouts. And once the ball is rolling, there is no stopping it. It will bankrupt our nation - just a matter of time.

Now we know the real reason for the Uvalde school shooting (from USA Today):
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2022/07/19/texas-border-control-tactics-uvalde-school-shooting/10093512002/
"Robb Elementary students were used to school lockdowns. Between February and May of 2022, the Uvalde, Texas, school had been secured or locked down 47 times...
Gaubeca attributed the aggressive police response to increasingly stringent border policies, particularly in Texas, where Gov. Greg Abbott has deployed thousands of Department of Public Safety officers and Texas National Guard troops to the Southern border to arrest and detain migrants crossing illegally from Mexico, bolstering federal immigration enforcement — a program critics say is unconstitutional."
“Gov. Abbott is the one who's contributing to this problem by creating a narrative that isn't reality on the ground,” Gaubeca said. “The reality on the ground is the place is oversaturated with law enforcement. The borders have been hyper-militarized.”
It appears we have too many LEOs on the ground for enforcing the border. Even as we have record numbers of illegals entering American land. And the school shooting is all the fault of a Republican governor. Not the poor leadership or cowardice of the 376 LEOs in the Uvalde elementary school; not due to the shooter.
And of course, we are told it is unconstitutional to try to keep illegals out of the country.

Why Democrats Won’t Wake Up
“Wake Up, Democrats!” cries the cover of the most recent issue of The Economist.
They won’t, at least not before the midterm elections……
“First, out of all the possible times for the leaders of the party and its centrist members to embrace a fight with their hard-left grassroots, four months before Election Day is perhaps the worst time. Right now, Democrats desperately need progressives — the Bernie Bros, the Squad fans, and your crazy Aunt Edna with the Ruth Bader Ginsburg prayer candles — to turn out in November; they’re disappointed enough with Joe Biden already. The future of Senators Raphael Warnock of Georgia, Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, and Mark Kelly of Arizona depends upon frustrated and impatient progressives in those states.
Second, rebuking the fringe Left is going to be difficult, and few people embrace difficult change until they hit bottom. Nobody likes admitting that they got something wrong, and nobody in politics wants to admit that their approach didn’t work — until after they’ve paid a high price at the ballot box.”
Yes, I will continue. Thank you for asking.
“The disappointing results of 2020 were clearly not enough. Shortly after the election, Representative Abigail Spanberger of Virginia seethed about her party’s left wing: “Tuesday was a failure, it was not a success. . . . If we don’t mean defund the police, we shouldn’t say that. . . . And we need to not ever use the word ‘socialist’ or ‘socialism’ ever again. Because while people think it doesn’t matter, it does matter, and we lost good members because of that. If we are classifying Tuesday as a success from a congressional standpoint, we will get f***ing torn apart in 2022.”
Do the Democrats seem more centrist and results-focused now than they did in 2020?”

They made up their minds long ago that the only hope for American democracy was to crush it."
What a guy.
I have no idea what was written that got translated into those sentences. I suspect Crabbman doesn't either... just his impressions.

Gregory 534pm - Wow! Thanks for the heads up. I read Bob's entire screed, he really has gone round the bend. He hasn't understood a single word about what he's read here and what at least half the country believes about the intent of including the 2A in the Constitution.

For those readers who have an elementary school playground view of the Declaration of Independence, the list of grievances, unedited:
He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public Good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing Importance, unless suspended in their Operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other Laws for the Accommodation of large Districts of People, unless those People would relinquish the Right of Representation in the Legislature, a Right inestimable to them, and formidable to Tyrants only.
He has called together Legislative Bodies at Places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the Depository of their public Records, for the sole Purpose of fatiguing them into Compliance with his Measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly Firmness his Invasions on the Rights of the People.
He has refused for a long Time, after such Dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the Dangers of Invasion from without, and Convulsions within.
He has endeavoured to prevent the Population of these States; for that Purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their Migrations hither, and raising the Conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the Tenure of their Offices, and the Amount and Payment of their Salaries.
He has erected a Multitude of new Offices, and sent hither Swarms of Officers to harrass our People, and eat out their Substance.
He has kept among us, in Times of Peace, Standing Armies, without the consent of our Legislatures.
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a Jurisdiction foreign to our Constitution, and unacknowledged by our Laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
For quartering large Bodies of Armed Troops among us:
For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from Punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
For cutting off our Trade with all Parts of the World:
For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
For depriving us, in many Cases, of the Benefits of Trial by Jury:
For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended Offences:
For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an arbitrary Government, and enlarging its Boundaries, so as to render it at once an Example and fit Instrument for introducing the same absolute Rule into these Colonies:
For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with Power to legislate for us in all Cases whatsoever.
He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
He has plundered our Seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our Towns, and destroyed the Lives of our People.
He is, at this Time, transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the Works of Death, Desolation, and Tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty and Perfidy, scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous Ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized Nation.
He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the Executioners of their Friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
He has excited domestic Insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the Inhabitants of our Frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known Rule of Warfare, is an undistinguished Destruction, of all Ages, Sexes and Conditions.

Rebane 9:46PM - I was watching Newt Gingrich's documentary on George Washington and marveling on how far down the slippery slope we've gone since those days. You can rail all you want about the unfairness of the January 6 hearings, but you can't change the fact that all those who testified were his own handpicked people. They painted an ugly portrait of a despot trying to cling to power and willing to sacrifice his own vice president and the multiple rulings of his own judges in the process. Richard Nixon refused to go that route in 1960. Al Gore refused in 2000, and Barack Obama didn't call in the troops when Hillary bit the dust in 2016. I hardly think Geo. Washington would approve of The Donald's sloppy little insurrection.
We still have elections to determine the course of American democracy. The "leftward slide" that gives you hives isn't faring well, even among Democrats. Polls show that the GOP is gaining ground with Hispanics and Asian-Americans. Joe Manchin stalled the ambitions of the progressives and despite the wishful thinking of the media it's likely the GOP will prevail in November.
You'll still have a republic, if you can keep from fucking it up.

rl 852am - You still don't understand that no one here on RR has approved of the 6J Capitol riot. In asserting that, you typify the lamestream media that always makes up both sides of any debate into which they enter (the only kind they can win). Neither do you understand the actual options the Constitution makes possible in the certification of the electoral college vote. You are immune to the news that Congress now wants to pass a law to finally clarify the matter which the 1887 Electoral Count Act confused. Pence did indeed have options and had no constitutional diktat to preside over kabuki theater.
As I and all our non-progressive readers agree, Trump has been the worst enemy of his own good policies. Every time the man opens his mouth, he comes across as a lout. But that assessment is independent of Americans voting for him again if he runs in 2024 (which I hope he doesn't) and is opposed by any rabid leftwinger or the now-certified idiot Biden.
My own druthers are that you guys run Biden, Harris, Sanders, Warren, Cory Booker, Pritzker, or even Klobuchar (not so sure that our electorate can see through the silver-tongued bamboozler Newsom, California voters sure as hell couldn't).
Over half the country thinks the Left's victory and continuance of their hyped but stalled policies in 2024 will keep the country on the wrong track, and that is the greatest existential threat to our democracy. It never was Trump and his own "sloppy little insurrection" that wasn't (only naifs poorly read on governance would ever consider 6J to have been an insurrection).

The 'nice' guys the GOP sent up for the slaughter had a real hard time against the united front of Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself).
Trump was and is the "Rockem, Sockem Robot" candidate. A real estate developer from Queens who will keep on his feet until the sale is complete.

More mind reading by crabbman:
"This is the kind of “community” George Rebane would like to see… https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/jul/23/california-shasta-county-far-right-extremists-politics-pandemic "

RL Crabb has now resorted to outright lying. That is the sign that your own social values and mores are bankrupt in the public square. In his 20jun22 post, he states, "George Rebane removed any doubt concerning the master plan for the Trumpublican takeover of the government, should they lose at the ballot box. In his post of July 16, which also appeared on the editorial page of The Union, he declares that it is the duty of the GOP to overthrow a duly elected majority government if doesn’t live up to their constitutional standards."
As the record shows, I made no such 'declaration'. Why has Bob Crabb debased himself in this debate?
