George Rebane
Dear People, we are back from our travels and almost recovered. Driving endless miles across the country's western deserts and highlands is not recommended for maintaining mental health. Besides, being on travel is greatly over-promoted. But everything worked out well; Jo Ann’s new van performed beautifully, and we had a great time with our friends, grandkids, and great-grandkids – they’re still growing like weeds.
So now we have two big reasons the GOP will be split and lose in 2024. First, Liz Cheney will splinter the party by running for president on a third party ticket if Donald Trump is nominated by the Republicans. And then again, if the Repubs don’t nominate Donald Trump for president in 2024, he may choose to become the third party candidate. Either way the Repubs loose the presidency in 2024, and the evil party will be free to continue in the evil ways it has made known to all under the Bumblebrain Administration.
[21aug22 update] Raid vs warranted search. The lamestream is beginning to influence FN et al in eliminating the ‘raid’ label on what happened at Mar-a-Lago. LE agencies execute search warrants by the hundreds every day across the country. These are overwhelmingly done during normal waking hours by a small team wearing civilian clothing and packing, at most, an inconspicuous 9mm semi-auto. When a platoon of FBI descends unannounced in a convoy of flashing lights vehicles during pre-dawn hours on a private residence, armed with sub-machine guns (fully auto assault weapons) to surprise the residence’s skeleton Secret Service detail due each former president, then that is a raid. Why the heavy artillery? Did they expect a firefight with fellow feds? Characterizing the warranted search as a raid was a deliberate political act to fuel and continue the anti-Trump hysteria. The Left clearly over-played their hand, and therefore immediately quit using ‘raid’ to characterize the historically unprecedented raid. That some conservative outlets are falling in line confirms that their claims to ‘Fair, balanced, and unafraid’ reporting is bullshit.
George,
If someone were to pay for my travel (gasoline, room, food) out west, and forbid me from stepping out of the vehicle, I could go 2 weeks easily just traveling by car (4WD SUV?). Especially on Route 12 & the back roads around Escalante UT. Can easily forget about those demons dwelling in the coastal big cities. Good times.

And if they do nominate Trump he'll surely lose so the Dems win in any situation. It's likely the Dems will retain the Senate due to the bizarre characters Trump has supported that are the candidates.. On the other hand history is on the side of the Repubs winning the House. So odds are in the midterms we'll have a divided House and Senate and in '24 a Democratic President. Biden will likely not be running.

Efox 218pm - Maybe two weeks is enough to do in your craving for the great western outdoors. We, as a western camping family (all vacations were to spectacular uninhabited places with awesome vistas) started getting saturated somewhere around the 25-year mark when the started having their kids. I think it's just age that makes one seek the more comfortable and easily accessible locales. Now we are in to cruising - both ocean and river - while watching the world go by with drink in hand.

Paul - Trump vs Biden? Trump would thrash him like a rented mule.
Of course the Dems have already realized what a pathetic figure Biden is. Just the husk of a rotten old political lying hack.
Right now the Dems are once again talking big about diversity and inclusion but will surely run a cis-gender white male. There's talk of Pretty Boy Gavin - he failed as a mayor and as a governor. Why not promote him to the next level of incompetence?

Welcome back, Dr. Rebane. As comedian Bill Cosby said (before his demise), his bones seeks comfort as he gets older. Camping to him meant a motel room with view with a remote and comfortable bed.
These bones seek comfort and sleeping on the ground in mosquito infested habitats or places crawling with scorpions may once have been fine and sleeping along side a scenic corridor in the underbrush is….well…now looking good only in the backroads of my mind.
Sleeping on the couch is now roughing it. :). Welcome home.
I would like to here more about those beautiful uninhabited places now exist only in the byways of your mind. Steinbeck’s ‘Travels with Charlie’ comes to mind. And you were there.

Dr. Rebane
You give Liz Cheney too much power, IMHO. Yes, she has a massive war chest building up, mostly from two states—Texas and CA. Texas mean the Bush W.-Karl Rove people and CA means liberals can only talk about Trump. Yes, for now, Liz Cheney, daughter of the Lefties ‘War Criminal’ dad is the media darling….but they will chew her up and spit her out just as soon as they are done needing her on the Unselect Committee. What Liz could do is peel off some Democrats fed up with the Squad’s view of America.
Of course the R’s are split. Of course the Dems are split. With an extreme liberal radical dufus President who is nowhere in the same ballpark as the older mainstream Dems, the far left does not have either the numbers or policies to attract new voters. The extremist Marxists call the shots for the entire Democrat Party.
One great thing Trump did that no one can deny is he attracted new voters to the R side. Beyond dispute, Trump grew the Republican Party. 20-25 of his rally attendees were registered Dems in 2016.
Bottomline: There are just so many RINOs left and they are not growing in numbers. So, I discount the Liz Cheney Oscar Show hype to my detriment.
Maybe some C-lister from the Dems’ Jr. Varsity back bench benchwarmer will emerge for 2024. I saw no one on the Dem 19 person stage in 2020 that fits the bill…expect Tulsi, who has looks, personality, command of her presence, articulation, and quick on her feet. Thus, she is labeled a traitor, a Putin asset by the Left.
Other than Tulsi, I cannot think of one Dem benchwarmer that has personality, presence, attractive, or Gravitas. Not one. Not one single one. No star power, no humor, no personality. Yes, Nixon was a man with no personality and no good looks, and was probably the last homely President to win..and he did win so you can’t discount one-offs.
Al Franken is back making the rounds.

BillT 617pm - Plausible arguments Mr Tozer, but a bit more complex than my simplistic ones. However, I'll stick with Occam on this one.

Fair enough. The ground under our feet has shifted, but how much? My cloudy ball can’t say for sure.

Another man’s opinion.
‘The Death of the Bush and Cheney Political Dynasties’
“There will be no going back to the old, feckless, moralistic nation-building crusades of decades past. There will be no going back to the old, neoliberal-inspired free trade absolutism that outsourced entire supply chains to our Chinese geopolitical archfoe, dramatically undercutting America's industrial resilience.
There will be no going back to the old, pro-Fortune 500 immigration agenda of open borders, amnesty for illegal aliens and mass visas for all sorts of foreign nationals.
There will be no going back to the old, corporatist economic agenda of prioritizing corporate and capital gains tax cuts while working-class families struggle to raise their kids on a single income.
There will be no more focusing on libertarian economics, the donor class's policy hobbyhorse, to the exclusion of those "nasty," "icky" cultural issues that animate the GOP's actual voter base.
Republican presidential primary voters in two years will likely have an opportunity to decide whether the party's future is best represented by Trump himself, on the one hand, or some variation of conservative-populist "Trumpism without Trump," on the other hand. But those remain the only two games in town.
There will be no going back to the pre-2016 "dead consensus" — except perhaps in the fever dream monologues of Liz Cheney's impending CNN show.“

No doubt Liz will do everything in her power to defeat Trump….if and only if he decides to run again. I just don’t see the numbers Liz has (today) that will make any difference unless it’s a razor thin race in 2024. Time will tell.
The Durham trial next week might put the fork in Hillary. Just kidding. It does not matter what she did, we must only talk about Orange Man Bad.

Time Magazine Compares Liz Cheney Defeat to Stalinist 'Disappearing'
“Alexander Hall at Fox News noted Washington Examiner columnist T. Becket Adams commented with sarcasm, tweeting, "Losing by 38 points in a free and fair democratic election, rejected overwhelmingly by the people who elected you in the first place, just like in the Soviet Union."
“He observed in a following tweet that "The people who say they love and respect democracy the most sure talk as if the voters have no agency or authority in the democratic process."

Umm….clears throat.
Dr. Rebane, kind sir: Never underestimate the evil nor the predictably of the Wretched Left. They will build you up as a hero then make you a zero faster than the speed of sound. From National Treasure to National Trash. From meat to poison, from Yale to Lefty Jail, from the Penthouse to the outhouse faster than an elevator with a snapped cable. Liz ain’t one of them and she ain’t one of us. It’s how democracy works.
‘Not A F***ing Hero’: The Left Turns On Liz Cheney After Primary Loss‘
“The left quickly turned on recently-ousted Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney (WY)
after her reelection bid failed to make it past the Republican primary last week.
For weeks, left-leaning Twitter accounts — and even media pundits and elected Democrats —championing the former Republican leader for her work on the January 6th Committee and her opposition to former President Donald Trump. But once she had lost her primary — to Trump-backed Harriet Hageman — and hinted at a possible 2024 presidential run, the left began to abandon her.“
Well, say what you want about Liz Cheney, but at least she got one thing spot on.

‘The Left Hates Talking about the Cold Hard Numbers’
“People who think the numbers undermine their argument, or who don’t know the numbers, or who don’t care about the numbers always want to shift the discussion away from cold hard facts and figures and towards touchy-feely “values” and feelings.
The fact that you don’t care about the numbers doesn’t make the numbers go away.
Sure, covering $10,000 in student loans may turn out to be extraordinarily expensive, do nothing to mitigate the high cost of higher education, punish those who did the right thing and create a moral hazard. But it feels good to progressives, so it must be the right policy.”
