George Rebane
Sen Joe Manchin has turned out to be another double dummy political hack and a major disappointment, succumbing to the predictable and obvious wiles of Sen Schumer. Ol’ Joe had us all fooled during the past year as being the staunch stalwart, along with Sen Sinema (D-AZ), against the economic ruin the Dems were cooking up with their Inflation Reduction Act bamboozle. They got Joe’s vote with the promise of including his pipeline and permit facilitation bill, which most on the Right correctly saw as Lucy’s football. Now that the bill has no chance of passing as is, Manchin’s reputation is in the mud with Republicans, moderate Democrats (vanishing breed), and, of course, his West Virginia constituents who expected more than the meadow muffins he wound up delivering. Tough to see how he’ll ever recover. (more here, here, and here)
Fire tax – Nevada County voters will have a chance to vote down the proposed ½% sales tax increase that’s supposed to fund wildfire prevention and mitigation. Actually, the collected monies will go into the general fund where the Supes promise they will be carefully watched and audited by a “citizens oversight committee”. California’s Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association warns us once more (here) how such taxes will be misused as they have been in the past.
J6 show trial postponed closer to election – Moving the century’s biggest-to-date show trial closer to the election again tells you all you need to know about this hyper-partisan kabuki theater. The Dems have no viable platform or record of achievements to present to the voters, so all they have left is to pump up the J6 hysteria of imminent attacks by Trump led ultra-right MAGA white supremacist terrorists. The real tragedy is that there are millions of muddle minded Americans who swallow this political swill. (more here)
Dems’ Big Lies – As opposed to counting Trump’s political bombast as lies, the real material lies that continue unabated from the Left need to be reviewed, revived, and reinserted into the public’s attention span. This, of course, is the job of the Republicans who have not shown much political moxie in keeping these highlighted in the public fora. Oh, to again have two viable political parties. Here is the list from a recent post -
When the dissemination of prime-time, first-rate whoppers comes up for discussion, our leftwing neighbors, both national and local, volubly maintain that both sides are at least equally guilty, with the Republicans dispensing the majority. By any comparative listing of such poetic truths (aka Big Lies), the contest is not even close, nor has it ever been. Historically socialists are the big liars, for that is the requirement for their public square bamboozles to gain any traction in governance. Today’s examples overwhelm –
‘Our southern border is secure, there is no border crisis’,
‘Crime rates are not up, there is no urban crime wave in America’,
‘Increasing taxes will not exacerbate the ongoing stagflation’,
‘Increasing taxes will grow the economy’,
‘Tax rates do not affect investment and productivity’,
'You can keep your doctor ...',
'Obamacare will reduce national healthcare costs',
‘Fossil fuels are bad and unnecessary; our energy needs can be met entirely by renewables’,
'America is better off being energy-dependent on foreign suppliers,'
‘Illegal immigration and illegal aliens in the workforce are necessary for economic growth’,
‘Capitalism and minimally regulated markets are arbitrary, cruel, and don't work’,
‘Men and women are exactly the same, making sexual distinction racist and unnecessary’,
‘Christians are intolerant’,
‘Trump’s collusion with the Russians swung the 2016 election’,
‘The tenets of Critical Race Theory are not taught in our K-12 schools’,
‘Merit based education (especially in STEM subjects) is racist’,
'Western culture is intrinsically racist',
‘America is a systemically racist country’,
‘Blacks don’t overwhelmingly kill blacks, cops gratuitously kill blacks,’
‘Government enforced equity motivates better than equal opportunity,’
‘Multi-cultural factionalism serves to unite America,’
… and on and on.
[1oct22 update] Competing for the biggest of the Dems’ big lies is their ‘Republicans want to destroy the Constitution, censor free speech, do away with our freedoms, and establish a totalitarian state.’ This message to their cognitively constrained constituents is Alinsky and Lenin on steroids, each part being exactly 180 from their own daily demonstrated policies and activists on the march. Today’s fragmented conservative pro-life movement is as close as any leftist can get to some Republicans wanting to limit your freedom to kill your unborn child. Other than that, it is ONLY the Republicans who work for fewer regulations, lower taxes to support a smaller government, and a nation of constitutional laws instead of a corrupt and growing administrative neo-Marxist state. And to put a bow on it, today’s Republicans leave a lot to be desired in their efforts to keep our republic.
[2oct22 update] One of our astute readers and commenters posted a link to a recent VDH piece, ‘The Thinnest Veneer of Civilization’. In communicating the current state of western civilization, the good professor has again hit it out of the park. Definitely a must read and share. One wonders how much of such writing is comprehensible to our Left. Dark days indeed.

Biden can tell literally any sort of lie he wants:
"“The first year of my presidency I reduced the deficit by $350 billion. Just in the first year,” explained the President. “This year, we’re on track to cut the federal deficit by $1.5 trillion. The biggest decline in debt in American history.”"
Biden's 'first year' operated on a budget that had nothing to do with Biden. I have no idea where Biden gets the idea that the deficit will decrease 1.5 T. this coming year. Tax receipts will crater with much smaller cap gains and much larger costs of fed borrowing and increases in costs for SS cola increases. Good luck.

MAGA sound bites: Hunter Biden's Laptop; Hillary's Emails; Border, Border, Border
"Whether the Trump administration escalated inhumane conditions through malice, incompetence, or both, the former president himself saw the resultant squalor as an asset to his policies. “If Illegal Immigrants are unhappy with the conditions in the quickly built or refitted detention centers, just tell them not to come. All problems solved!” he tweeted in 2019.
In the 1980s, according to a joint report on immigration detention by the ACLU, Human Rights Watch, and the National Immigrant Justice Center, the U.S. immigration system held only about 2,000 people a day, on average—this was not an era of open borders, the vast majority of people attempting to cross the border were swiftly turned away. From 2000 to 2016, the average daily number of detainees rose from about 20,000 to 32,985, most of whom were held in facilities run by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Under the Trump administration, that number skyrocketed to an average of more than 50,000 people in 2019. “When CBP facilities are included,” the report noted, “the federal government has detained some 80,000 people at a time—far higher than the number detained in previous administrations.”
This was a policy choice, not an inevitability. In 2000, there were 1,676,438 apprehensions, according to CBP’s statistics. In 2019, during the last “border crisis,” there were 859,501. America has the largest system of immigration detention in the world, because this is the course policy makers have chosen."

Because ignorant people like Nathaniel Weixel and Amie Parnes think the Supreme Court are up for election.
Imagine if the Supreme Court had outlawed slavery in 1815! Holy shit - would their "approval rating" been in the toilet!
Maybe if the morons that write this kind of bilge had studied history and the US Constitution they might understand that there is a reason the SCOTUS should be guided by the supreme law of the land. If you lefties don't like the Constitution, the authors allowed you a process to change it to suit your fancy. If you want to kill 2 year olds, then that can be arranged via an amendment. It would all be proper and legal. And the SCOTUS would would rule in your favor. I wouldn't like it, but I'd have to agree that the court was following the law.
Maybe if the left would actually learn to read English and come to understand basic logic, we might have a better country. Until then, I'd say things are going to get rather spicy.

Creepy grampa joe aka hidin' biden is rushed back to the basement for his tapioca -
President Joe Biden was criticized Tuesday for his response to reporters shouting questions at him while being escorted out of a White House abortion task force meeting.
As they tried to question him, Biden just smiled and said, "You're among the only press in the world that does this. Seriously, seriously."
In response, critics slammed Biden for attacking the free press despite refusing to answer their questions and failing to hold press conferences with any degree of frequency.
"This guy routinely hides from the press, rarely takes questions, almost never does pressers, and has the gall to criticize them for trying to ask questions on one of the few opportunities they get,"
"In the United Kingdom, the Prime Minister has to publicly defend their own policies during televised debates every week. In the United States, Joe Biden complains that he has to answer questions every few months."
"Do other world leaders hold press conferences & sit down for interviews more frequently than, like, every six months, or whatever?
At the task force meeting, which included Vice President Kamala Harris, Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, and others, Biden called the Supreme Court's recent ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade "fairly extreme" despite even liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg believing that Roe was based on decidedly weak legal grounds.

Dear Dark Days Diary:
The American Medical Association wants you to stop questioning gender ideology — or else
"It’s not, but the reason the AMA is up in arms is that they know their bubble is beginning to burst. The more the public is forced to confront the devastating effects gender ideology is having on young children and adults, the more they will reject it. The AMA knows this, and it also knows it won’t be able to come up with a defense for an ideology that defies both science and common sense. So, it’s turned to its allies in the Biden administration in the hope that it can silence its critics."

Creepy grampa joe is yelling at the kids again -
As Biden concluded recent remarks, he appeared to snipe at the assembled press as they shouted questions at him.
"[You're] among the only press in the world that does this,"
Thiessen pointed out on "America Reports" Wednesday that a raucous press corps is nothing new at the White House, citing how longtime ABC News correspondent Sam Donaldson became noted for shouting pointed questions at President Reagan.
Unlike Biden, Reagan never rebuked Donaldson, Thiessen said, adding he would however at times cup his ear and "pretend he couldn't hear" what the reporter was asking.
"I never heard Ronald Reagan saying that ‘Woe is me, that Sam Donaldson keeps asking me, shouting questions at me’... this has been a feature of the presidency since the television era began," Thiessen said.
During the Trump administration, CNN reporter Jim Acosta regularly became confrontational with the president, who in turn often labeled him "fake news."
Thiessen later added that Biden's complaints are even further unfounded, given his remark that the U.S. press corps is largely alone in shouting questions at their head of state.
The former Bush official pointed out that Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, and Russian President Vladimir Putin do not have the same dynamic with their media because they are all strongmen leaders of largely undemocratic nations.
"The American press corps shouts press questions of the president because we're a free country, and we're allowed to do that," he said.
"For the president, the United States to expect to have the kind of deference that despots get around the world is pretty galling."
Thiessen remarked that Biden would never be able to handle the British media.
On a weekly basis, the U.K.'s leader participates in Prime Minister's Questions before the House of Commons, aired on C-SPAN in the U.S.
"Can you imagine if Joe Biden had to go into the well of the Senate and take questions once a week from the from the Republican senators about his policies?" Thiessen asked, predicting such a back-and-forth "would be a massacre" for the president.

Barry 4:05 - Another example of this is the Dems trying to "fund" the police by handing US tax dollars to bankrupt Dem run cities. The cities got rid of the police because they thought the police "caused" crime, not because they didn't have the money.
Now Biden and the Dems want to hand out massive amounts of dough to these same cities to evade their ACABs stance of just a few months ago.
The money is fungible and is really just to backstop the underfunded pensions but they play it as "you must support it or you don't support the police".
Total sham. Typical.

What traditionally provided by government services service will be next to get its own sales tax slice in Nevada County?

Great post Barry. You, my good man, got my mind settled on the issue. Say 9% sales tax, and it my ears perked up. Radar goes off. Numbers spinning like a one armed bandit slot machine. I don’t want to be number one in our area, or any area, region, or district for that matter. :)
Remember the state wide sales tax jump (1% ?) after the Oakland earthquake? They did shore up a lot of bridges. 30 day from submit to approval, sometimes less. Had a sunset.
When sunset came, ole Willy Brown was bellowing away that we can’t turn our backs on the poor people in Oakland living in poverty, now can we? The sales tax has been renewed every sunset.
Now, who can be against clean air?
Thanks for the eye popper. 9%! And it would be 75 years for them to get around to do my place. They couldn’t go for a quarter percent, eh? Had to go for the, “ it’s now or never! “ song and dance 1/2 %. 1/2% sales tax. Hurry people, hurry.

Semi
fascist.....um ...semi off topic but still apropos given the title of the post. This colloquy of gloom reminded me of a famous observation from the writer Robert Heinlein.
“Throughout history,” Heinlein wrote in 1973, “poverty is the normal condition of man.”
“Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded—here and there, now and then—are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people.”
Then comes the kicker: “Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.”
“This,” Heinlein added, “is known as ‘bad luck.’”
Of course, Heinlein was speaking ironically with that last bit.
The issue was not “bad luck” but virtue-fired stupidity.
All those “right-thinking people”—the people with the socially certified ideas, the kinder, gentler, mask-wearing, anti-fossil-fuel types—are on the ramparts, proudly toppling the atavistic instruments of their prosperity.
Very soon now, they will look around at the wreckage their good intentions have wrought and wonder who is to blame for the poverty, the chaos, the ruins that lay strewn where once, not so long ago, a vibrant civilization stood, supported by a mighty economy.
.....sigh.

In response to Goldmacher’s tweets, the chief of staff of Republican New York Assemblyman Mike Lawler, who is running against Maloney, tweeted a video of the event, writing, "Here’s even video of him and Schiff on a balcony in Paris sipping wine and eating hors d'oeuvres."
The video was later slammed by Lawler and shared by his campaign political director.
"While @spmaloney was galavanting around the globe to raise money to re-elect socialists and keep @SpeakerPelosi in power, I’ve been speaking directly to voters across the district every day since May," Lawler tweeted Sunday morning. "No one should be surprised when Sean loses on November 8th."

Got a fresh election informational mailer from the Office of Emergency Service, County of Nevada, 950 Maidu Avenue, Nirvana Silly 95959
Double sided, full color.
It all but demands one to vote for V, while stating in the smallest of print at the bottom, "Nevada County does not advocate a yes or no vote on any candidate or measure", just below the Nevada County California insignia.
It stinks.

Ya @ 434 - the listening tour and online ads and flyers appear to be crossing the line but the reality is a complaint to the FPP has no practical effect on the election other than a talking point. Slimy. But they want that sweet general fund bucks for 'homeless relocation' and other.
