fishy 11:14 - Really love the King of Krime Fighters, Governor Hair-Gel:
"California Gov. Gavin Newsom blasted the "completely unacceptable" rise in crime and announced a surge of 120 California Highway Patrol officers to Oakland..."
Now, I could have sworn that anyone complaining about crime just a minute ago was slammed as "repeating Republican talking points".
Of course my memory must be getting bad because I could have also sworn those same folks were telling us 24/7 that the border was totally under control and anyone saying otherwise was just hyping racist and xenophobic nonsense. Now those same folks are talking about a "border crises". Golly - is my memory that bad or, or, or - oh - it's election year.
Never mind.

I've been reading a lot of the "shock/horror" stories due to the news of the death of Navalny. Navalny kept telling everyone that Putin was a thug/murderer and Putin told him to shut up. Navalny didn't and got the last laugh (we're all laughing, right?) because Putin finally had him done in. Maybe folks like Navalny need to listen to their own words. Putin is a thug/murderer and he's had plenty of others fall out of windows as it is so we really didn't need Navalny to make a martyr out of himself to prove a point. Anyway - Putin is just so crude and old fashioned. In "our" democracy, we just rake the noise makers over the legal coals until they are too broke to make any more noise or just too damn tired or cowed to cause any trouble. Occasionally it can still get western - ask Seth Rich or Vince Foster.
Now we have this:
"Foremost Group CEO Angela Chao died after car went into Texas pond, sheriff says"
"“On arrival Blanco County deputies along with Blanco County EMS and Fire recovered the body of Angela Chao from a pond on the ranch,” the statement said."
"Ah hell - everbody done know Asians caint drive a hoot" said Sheriff Knownuffin.

"Putin kills a patriot"
Like years ago and you can multiply that number by a lot. Putin was the top KGB man in East Germany.
I learned that when he came to power. What the hell else do you need to know? Gasp! He's not a nice guy!!
Ever hear of Boko Haram? They attack civilians in villages and slaughter most of the folks and then haul off the cute females to rape at their leisure. Of course those are duskies, not sorta-white Jews in Israel so they just don't get the press but who cares, right?
In southern Egypt, the adherents of the religion of peace have been slaughtering Christian Copts for decades but the Copts don't have any connections in Hollywood so - shrug - whatta ya gunna do?
Sorry - not sorry - there is evil and mayhem all over the globe and has been since humans learned to chuck rocks at each other. I refuse to get all hot and bothered about one group of yahoos and just ignore another based on nothing more than than the word of ignorant talking heads that take their orders from whomever pays them the most dough. The current regime in China is far worse in any dimension you can think of than those drug-addled Brown Shirts from the Third Reich but we're being told to play nice with them.

Well duh we all knew what the end game is -
"It is unconscionable that illegal immigrants and noncitizens are counted toward congressional district apportionment and our electoral map," said Hagerty.
"While people continue to flee Democrat-run cities, desperate Democrats are back-filling the mass exodus with illegal immigrants so that they do not lose their seats in Congress and maintain electoral votes for the presidency and hence artificially boost their political power, which in turn dilutes the power of other Americans’ votes," he added.
Shortly after taking office in January 2021, President Biden signed an executive order requiring that the U.S. Census Bureau factor in all residents, including noncitizens, as part of its decennial calculation of the U.S. population. As a result, the apportionment of House seats and, therefore, electoral votes for presidential elections, could be swayed as migrants continue to pour over the southern border.

Yeah - you're broke and he's wealthy, so he must be wrong. Best line:
"“Moralizing financial decisions is very damaging to marginalized groups,” says Israel, who is Black."
Funny. "Marginalized People" are constantly moralizing about MY money.
The main takeaway is that these are the same folk that complain the "rich" have all the power and money while they reject Ramsey's advice to stop handing their money to these same rich people.
They carp about "equity" of results and outcomes, but don't want the responsibility or work put into the "equity" you have to engage in to achieve the results.
But, don't worry - just vote for the Dems and they'll make sure you can sit on your ass and end up at Big Rock Candy Mountain.

Motte: Sex varies. In addition to XX and XY there's XXY, XYY, XXYY, XXXY, XXXY, XXXXY, X, XXX, XXXX, XXXXX
Bailey: Sam Brinton is normal and is actually a superior sort of human.

More Sora - I forwarded the link to the Sora web site to our son who is in the InterWeb biz and does computer animation on the side. He sent back a link to a Substack post from former teacher of his in college.
Interesting takes on Sora from the perspective of a person heavily involved in that sort of stuff:

There's always a difference of opinion and then there's just flat out stupidity:
"I think like a scholar and practitioner of journalism and democracy, not a peddler of stocks and bonds, because once we view constitutionally protected news organizations like any other widget in a capitalist economy, then our democracy is doomed."
"A journalism professor blames Wall Street for the newspaper industry’s collapse."
Yeah - that's why I stopped subscribing to newspapers - it was because of Wall St.

re: scotto@10:37PM
lol. That's exactly the quote I was going to pull. I see that she is also a "International Fact-Checking Network certifier" whatever that is.
I can feel her pain to some extent since private equity firms appear to be in the forefront of stripping Nevada County of a high tech sector, but I tend to think of them as a symptom, not a cause. Where there's a buyer, there's a seller, and when a business or industry is on it's way down they'll tend to sell out to these guys while the getting is good.
It would be interesting to go through the accounting books for a local newspaper over the last 100+ years, look at the headcount, compare the product. Their modern websites are *always* utter dreck, a wasteland of PITA advertising/bidding for eyeballs and free 'concerned citizen' editorials, but it would be interesting to look for changes. Modern people simply don't read much anymore, aside from small paragraphs of Twitter/Reddit/Tiktok wisdom and wherever Psul gets his outrage o' the day, so there is that.
Of course, the real problem is that you have to provide a product people will actually buy and the Big Slot Machine of modern media is 'free'.

Don 11:25 - No, no! Putin is our enemy! Xi is a nice guy. Remember Xi was just here in Frisco and Gavin finally had the town cleaned up for him? Slobbered all over him and kissed his ass? We LIKE Xi! We HATE Putin! You need to start following orders about who you like and don't like.

While I can see the damage that will be done to commercial artists, it's not dissimilar to the carnage wrought by Adobe Illustrator and the LaserWriter in terms of wiping out print shops with a flood of 'good enough' amateur work.
My guess is that the first world to be really messed with in a jobs sense, once the tech is digested, is video games. It's a helluva lot bigger than the movie or music business and is well equipped to deal with changes in approach I think.
Of course, the internet will be ever more enshittified, but SEO and it's allies have been pretty darned automated for some time already.

"constitutionally protected news organizations"
If I was in a discussion group and some one came up with that line, I would probably have no idea of what to say next. What alt-reality do these people inhabit? It is truly amazing to see rational thought tossed out the window.

"FBI Director Says China Cyberattacks on U.S. Infrastructure Now at Unprecedented Scale"
Perhaps the TLAs might consider spending more money on cyber defensive efforts and less on spying on the world.
Their prejudice towards the offense, in terms of banking Zero Days and working with vendors to spy through peep holes is noted and perhaps isn't the way to go.
Not a bad book on the subject: https://www.amazon.com/This-They-Tell-World-Ends/dp/1635576059
And readable even by our local hippies as she is convinced that Trump is President because Russia, although a small organized effort on social media looks rather besides the point to me. I simply assume that working for the NYT biases your thinking and adjust my reading accordingly.

"constitutionally protected news organizations"
My best guess is that that means "left wing media outlets need to exist because Nazis" and "if they are failing, they need government funding".
I'm not certain how centralization of ownership is different than William Randolph Hearst, but people tend to be outrage if there own peculiar bias isn't reflected in some popular mass media.
Naturally, the price of constructing and publishing your own local newsletter is near-zero if you value your time as worth zero.
Perhaps the Sierra Business Council could whip up a position paper on how the county government needs to fund The Nevada County Climate Change Pride People of Color Times. You can't beat a non-profit for providing profits.

It will go way beyond that. Once you reduce the financial and skill barrier down to almost zero, the mind reels as to what our electronic world will be filled with. Consider the jump in a person's world experience from pre radio and TV to the present. The next jump will be way faster.
It's that double-edged sword thingie.
Can't say that life ain't entertaining as long as you're in a position to side-step the worst of it.
But then I suppose it's always been that way.

Exactly.
The part that get me is that she claims it's in the Constitution. A govt funded and approved information stream.
Pretty sure the Constitution was drawn up to PROTECT us from just that.

Ahem….gentlemen…..! What about Trump?
Posted by: fishhole | 19 February 2024 at 08:21 AM
Seen elsewhere……da is funny.
Hochul was telling other businessmen not to worry because this obscure law, with which no one has previously been charged under such circumstances, is being used only against Donald Trump. It is a sort of Bill of Attainder. No one who is not Donald Trump need worry. Only, how can they not worry when a state supports this level of corruption? Watch more corporations move to safer climes.”
It’s entertaining watching the blue state lack of self-control. They really can’t control themselves when it comes to anything having to do with Bad Orange Man!

Constitution?
That great American document exists to provide for the citizen two 2️⃣ fundamental and inalienable rights. The right to welfare and of course, to that of endless unprotected anal sex.
Gentlemen…..a republic if you can keep it.

scotto: (referring to AI) "It will go way beyond that. "
oh, I understand that. I was thinking about low hanging fruit in terms of the arts. Music composition and production will be hit a treat also, especially given the mechanized angle that pop tunage already has in how it's constructed. Next up will be copyright wars decided by robot judges.
I think the funniest near-term angle will be the changes to bullshit business jobs, like all those 'business consultant' 28 year olds you see on youtube's 'A Day in My Life at Facebook'. Powerpoint slides will be converted into a page of prose, a page of prose converted back to bullet items, all of it plausible non-useful nonsense. Whole divisions of companies can be automated, communicating with each other in a great big singularity of emailed spreadsheets, charts, and reports. A feedback loop of boilerplate. Seriously, the SBC needs to look into this as a business practice, maybe staff cuts are in the offing.

Here’s the data from a 65 yo retired man living in a 962 sq ft house in Clawson, Michigan.
From 2019-2023 the FEC has recorded him making over 15,600 separate donations to political campaigns.
The list below shows the receiving campaign, the # of donations made and the total amount donated from 2019-2023"
