[Not sure why the pundits (save Gerard Baker here) conclude that Trump may lose to Biden because he’s not able to attract independent/undeclared voters as well as Haley. They seem to think that the South Carolina percentages of these voters for Haley(65%) and Trump(34%) are cast in concrete. The primary vote presents voters a different choice than the November election. Given the choice of Trump OR Biden, many(most?) of the 65% will not opt for another four years of Bumblebrain or (gasp!) Kamala. They will vote for Trump even if they have to hold their noses. gjr]
I've not seen a good estimate of the number of Democrats who voted for Haley in the GOP primary in SC.

Ummm, George... not sure what your numbers were referring to. 65/35% seemed to be reversed.
Posted by: Gregory | 26 February 2024 at 02:07 PM
Greg 207pm - In the Republican primary the percentage of independent/undeclared voters for Haley was 65%, and for Trump was 34%.

"But as the legal scholar James Grimmelmann has observed, just because it’s fair for a person to do something for self-education doesn’t necessarily mean it’s fair for a corporation to do it on a massive scale for profit."
So - it's all right for you to read books and educate yourself, but not OK for a machine, because...
PROFIT!
As we all know, authors always write for fun and they never make any money - right?
MASSIVE SCALE!
Uh, almost every single thing you buy is a product that used to be slowly hand-crafted and is now made on a 'massive scale'.

In the article, Prof. Furedi notes that “Life has always been difficult. There are relationship breakdowns and failings and struggles. But children have been taught that these difficulties are psychological issues that need medicalising, and not a normal part of life."
And all this while a safe and comfortable home, abundant food, and pure water is provided by the parents, or government. Try having a comfortable home without the natural gas that the Biden folks want to eliminate; try growing abundant food when the Biden folks want to eliminate crude oil (and so fertilizer and gasoline) for crops & tractors. That's when the physical problems start. We don't realize exactly how well we live in our naturally dangerous world.
Ask the third-worlders how much they envy our American ingenuity - they would take it in a minute. Of course, many are taking it by invasion, and we are letting them, without a complaint. We are forgetting how much maintenance, physical and mental, is required to keep our first-world abundance.
Psychological stress is largely self-induced. Wait until the physical stress begins if you think it's bad now. Not many years away.

"Try having a comfortable home without the natural gas that the Biden folks want to eliminate; try growing abundant food when the Biden folks want to eliminate crude oil (and so fertilizer and gasoline) for crops & tractors. "
My working theory on that is that policy makers simply don't understand the physical world very well and, more importantly, take the tactic that if you abolish something a replacement will be found through the genius of science. If the easier/cheaper thing still exists, particularly true of mined energy, no one will bother to replace it. Neither the Law of Unintended Consequences or physics matters much. An answer will magically be provided given the pressure of an artificial emergency.
Of course, legislating something out of existence is not only easier than replacing it, but is a sure-fired way to ratchet up your own wealth and status.
At least we know about how many people the planet can support without fossil fuels in a more primitive fashion. Gonna be ugly getting there though. Hope everyone has a spare bedroom available for the flood of undocumented citizens.

Well, of course - that must be the reason:
"Greene also confirmed Rep. Matt Gaetz’s (R-KY) statement that Hunter testified he joined the board of Burisma Holdings to counter Russian aggression. “He said he was picked to serve on Burisma ‘s board to defend democracy and Burisma was stopping Russian aggression,” Greene said."
Yessir - Burisma's board knew they were being investigated for corruption by the then current prosecutor, but being patriotic they knew the important and critical thing they needed to do was to hire an American drug addict to defend their country against Russian aggression.
Turns out they paid all that dough to Hunter to no avail - Putin invaded anyway.
But son of a bitch, the drug addict's dad just by total coincidence got rid of that pesky prosecutor!
And Idiot Juanita and Paul totally believe this shit.

So funny to read the comments from all the Republicans on this site as they fumble around, Trump style, talking about gas stoves, gender issues, yada yada yada.
Biden just owned Trump at the border, calling him out to actually do something besides complain.
But the Republican party is the party of grievance and conspiracy theories.
This election cycle feels like a replay of the Carter Reagan election.
As with Reagan and the hostages, Trump wants to keep the border problems alive until after the election. He also even admitted he would like economy to crash before the election.
How about that Hunter Biden story?
The freedom-fried brainiacs of the freedom caucus continue to conspire and scrabble around for anything they can in order to keep the Hunter Biden BS conspiracy going even after being basically laughed out of chambers.

And Idiot Juanita is now making my point about Hunter Biden. Juanita totally buys the story that the Burisma board hired Hunter to fight off Putin! Hilarious! Say - that must be why Hunter had to buy his shootin' iron! He was going to fight the Russkies with it!
I see California is dealing with climate change these days. The end of snow, remember? But it's OK because the voters passed a multi-billion dollar bond years ago to build more dams. Right? How many dams have they built? Lots, right?

Now that is a beautiful thing. I don't know whether to be more outraged at the plagiarism, the award of a PhD for a 100+ pages of word salad bullshit, or the inevitable well-paid sinecure that you get when on that gravy train. There is a lot to like here, but you can't blame a dull-normal youth for taking advantage of a situation. It isn't like your average Kommissar was the sharpest tool in the shed.

MSNBC host bashes Fulton County attorney in Fani Willis hearing: 'Is this the best the DA’s team has?'
MSNBC's Katy Tur called Georgia prosecutor 'kind of hard to watch'
MSNBC host Katy Tur slammed Georgia prosecutor Adam Abbate on Friday for his performance on behalf of embattled Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, asking if that was the "best" the county could do.
Multiple news outlets reported on Abbate’s halting speaking style during the course of the hearing. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution was one such news outlet to note the "long pauses and halting answers as he at times struggled to answer questions from Judge Scott McAfee"
"I’m struck by… this lawyer is kind of hard to watch," Tur said. "I mean, as a layman, he’s kind of hard to watch. Is this the best the DA’s team has to put up?"
"When you talk about these nuanced arguments, I don’t know if this is something he’s used to presenting," she conceded.
"As opposed to taking the bait from the defense and starting your argument off responding arguing to them, as opposed to enabling yourself to settle in, say what you were going to say and ‘then, by the way, Judge, what they said was wrong, let me tell you why.’"
At one point, Abbate accidentally referred to Willis as "Ms. Wade" before correcting himself, confusing her last name for that of her former romantic partner.

While it's difficult to beat the straight-to-the-point comment on the story from one 'JoeyChernenko'
"Fram is a mentally ill attention seeking male who's been promoted within the military to further a maniacal agenda with the primary goal of destroying the USA. Period."
Maybe it's more a matter of using the normalization of mental illness as a way to achieve status. Lotsa gold in them thar affirmative action and non-profit hills. The first Furry SecDef is only a matter of time.
After spending a bit of time perusing Ms. Fram on YouTube, and after the inevitable wondering about all the decorations you can get in those gigs anymore, I decided it was simpler to just be damned glad to live in this era where I can see such marvels. You can argue that making the military crappier keeps the country out of overseas adventures and, by golly, I get to laugh and laugh at the absurd situations presented as Good Things. I think that 'progressives' were put on Earth just to crack me up between one thing and another.

re: fishole@10:54AM
As mentioned, the quote is from someone else at Zerohedge.
I honestly don't think that universal goals become a thing after a certain point. Like most group movements, 'progressivism' becomes an exercise in self-aggrandizement after a purty short time span. People like Randi Weingarten, Ibram X. Kendi, Tim Wise, or your local school board, have a genius for perverting a seemingly selfless movement for their own advancement, and heroes like 'Bree Fram' (thank you for your service) manage to ride their own debauchery to public renown. Destroying the USA is simply collateral damage in indulging in one's own feelz, avarice, and perversion.
It's funny how people who were so quick to see the falseness in megachurch-style Christian nationalism, like the now-insignificant 1980s TV evangelists, are so susceptible to the lures of men-in-dresses, Wakanda, and the placement of sexually-aberrant books in elementary school libraries. Maybe, at heart, 'progressives' all want to be one of Sam Brinton's pups.

Creepy grampa joe opened the floodgates to illegals, ruined the economy for citizens and lost the hispanic vote -
Between candidates Biden and Trump, 46% of Hispanics who responded to the poll said they would vote for Trump, while 40% said they would support Biden. That's a big difference from Biden's 2020 general election support from Hispanics. Biden won 59% of the Hispanic vote to Trump's 38% that year, according to Pew Research.

Another pointy headed liberal global warming solution meets reality -
Contra Costa County officials will stop enforcing building codes that require most new buildings to be all-electric — at least for now.
The about-face comes after a three-judge panel in April struck down Berkeley's first-in-the-nation ban on natural gas in new construction, ruling that cities do not have the authority to prohibit the installation of natural gas plumbing in buildings.

re: DonB@8:00PM
Doesn't matter, they'll ban natural gas in any case.
From the article:
"Notably, the ruling doesn't impact cities that have taken a building code-based approach to natural gas bans"
If you spend some time on a site like reddit, where there are scads of people exuding their feelz, it basically all boils down to this:
. The world will end unless certain measures are taken and these measures are known with utter certainty (let's say lessening use of natural gas).
. There's only one set of ways to lessen use of natural gas. This is done with a very particular set of products and technologies (heat pump and PG&E control of 'smart' thermostat perhaps).
. The only way to achieve this end is to use government to mandate these products and technologies.
. You are not allowed to escape the mandate via wealth, geographic location, or any other 'inequitable' means.
It's the kind of techno-fascism you might run into for transportation issues, communications, food production. Inventing rules is it's own reward.

I think that Ben Shapiro is an overly-whiny sort of creature, but it's cool for him to accumulate things that crack me up.

"1/ BREAKING: We've obtained internal emails from UCLA's medical school -- supposedly one of the best in the country. If you want to understand how DEI and anti-white, anti-American hatred have been mainlined into the medical profession, you need to see this"
etc.
One takeaway, to me, is that it's probably not a bad plan to do a minimal background check on any facility or surgeon that does something life-saving/threatening to you. It's one of the few cases where it's practically impossible to avoid 'activists' doing their magic to you personally.
Shapiro also introduced me to the word 'Indigeneity' here, so I am eternally grateful.

How did I miss this? So sad, Large Marje and a few of her MAGA brained cohorts lost their supreme court challenge against having to pay fines for not wearing masks in Congress.
The fines get deducted from her paycheck, lol

"pay fines for not wearing masks in Congress"
What a f'ing stupid rule. Do people actually think those things made a bit of difference? Masks were all about a combination of hysteria and power dynamics. Though shall wear a mask and we can force you to.
I did run into a case showing the value of the internet though. Helium mining. I wondered where in the heck helium came from since you'd think that the natural tendency for the less dense to go up would result in any residual helium disappearing long ago.
Looked it up. Alpha particles are helium minus a couple of electrons. Duh. Natural radioactivity'll make it over time. I still don't know why it would collect with natural gas deposits.

Lower courts had said Pelosi could not be sued because courts don’t have jurisdiction over Congress’ internal rules

There was no Supreme Court ruling made, Jeff.

Am I the only one here who's seen the new Dune movie?
My sweetie and I took it in at Del Oro on our way to the airport yesterday... she has a moot in NYC. Good movie.
Fortunately, the blizzard didn't materialize in our part of Nirvana Silly.

"Am I the only one here who's seen the new Dune movie?"
Didn't see the movie, but I reread the book lately in kind of a quick 'greatest hits' run through of pulp fiction I read as a kid. It (and a couple of other Herbert novels) held up better than a lot of SF novels of the era I think.
I always think of the March 1965 Analog cover when it was first serialized.
I do have to wonder if the quickly improving ability to build synthetic movies will result in a burst of output, or the death of the concept as something else takes it's place. The opportunities for interactive entertainment are one way the whole deal could veer.

I read Dune circa 1969 after I read through the Lord of the Rings and had to keep feeding.
Can't find my old paperbacks.
While the new Dunes are superior to the old Dune movie from Dino De Laurentis, I did like that one too. A simpler movie from a simpler time.

Idiot Juanita: "How did I miss this?"
Oh, Juanita - there is sooo much that you miss.
Don't you worry your pretty little head. Just keep reading Slate and Salon and hang on every word that issues from the White House. I'm sure you have enough money and standing in the "correct" political crowd to get you through most of the world's reality.
Look at your glee that people you hate are punished for nothing beyond being people you hate. You remind me of teacher's pet smirking because you ratted out someone in class you don't like and now they have to sit in the corner.
I suppose if that's all you have left as enjoyment in your life...
Sad.

Read em and weep -
The CBS News/YouGov poll released on Sunday contains very dark warnings for Biden and great news for Trump. First off, the former president leads the current president 52 percent to 48 percent in a head-to-head matchup. That Trump is in majority support territory should be very troublesome for Biden—that means Trump has a majority of the country with him according to this survey. That lead is also the biggest lead CBS has ever recorded in its history of polling Trump versus Biden—a terrible fact for the current president. But drilling down even deeper into the numbers, one finds some more boons for Trump and pitfalls for Biden. Among independents, the CBS News poll found Trump at 57 percent and Biden at 42 percent—a 15-point lead for Trump among the decisive bloc that could swing November’s contest.

Primary hydrogen on earth was found in 1987 in Mali, yet virtually no info produced about it in the U.S. Why didn't we know about this 37 years ago? Hydrogen has never been a primary source of energy on earth, because there just ain't none in the free state anywhere. Yet here is a bunch of it. If this is real, looks like Deus ex machina might come true. Even though the info is 37 years late. Did the greens have this up their sleeves all the time, just keeping it quiet?

"Did the greens have this up their sleeves all the time, just keeping it quiet?"
The only thing up the "greens" have up their sleeve is a hammer and sickle tattoo and a smelly arm pit.
If there is really that much energy available in a form that is cost effective in calories per dollar at point of sale, then we would not only be hearing about it, but using it by now. I remember in the 70's when Solar Age and Popular Science magazines were claiming that old Mr Sol would power everything in a decade.
We already know that beneath our feet is enough heat energy to power everything we can possibly dream of for eons. Also that our sun will eventually obliterate all life in our solar system.
An interesting development for sure but my hopes rise only as high as the reality I wake up to every morning.

"Supreme Court puts Trump back on Colorado Republican primary ballot"
My guess is that most MSM won't mention the number of Justices who voted to put him back on.
I have to admire the amount of scorched earth lawfare that has been going on. Given the amount of time it takes to correct a power imbalance, or for The Woke to age out, you do have to wonder where you'll end up as people get crankier about it. It's tough to run a competent country with a consortium of cat ladies, crossdressers, rent-seeking POC diatribers, and a scattering of old-school neocons who want to blow up the world.
