Dystopia has dawned – Trump convicted on all counts. The greatest American travesty has happened in my lifetime. I have seen my country slide from its heights of glory to the now confirmed beginning of its dark age from which recovery to its former self is unlikely. With evil and corruption now firmly ensconced in our government, it is doubtful that my children will ever again witness America in its full promise as the shining city on a hill. (more here and here)
Dystopia reared itself under Trump's tutelage.

TRU DAT -
RFK Jr. predicts Trump conviction will backfire on Democrats
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an independent candidate for president in 2024, took to social media to warn that former President Donald Trump's conviction could backfire on Democrats.
"The Democratic Party's strategy is to beat President Trump in the courtroom rather than the ballot box. This will backfire in November. Even worse, it is profoundly undemocratic," Kennedy said in a post on X. "America deserves a President who can win at the ballot box without compromising our government’s separation of powers or weaponizing the courts. You can’t save democracy by destroying it first."
The independent candidate added that Democrats "are afraid they will lose in the voting booth," causing them to use a trial instead.

Ironically since Trump has been convicted of felonies he won't be able to vote in his home state Florida.
"What are voting rights in Florida?
Citizens 18 years and older have the right to
register and then vote.
You lose the right to vote in Florida if you
are convicted of a felony until you finish your
sentence, including prison, parole and/or
probation, and pay the money you were ordered
to pay by a court when you were convicted."

No shit Sherlock!
Punch™ set the WayBack machine to mere hours ago.....
Scott says Biden has "has been declared too demented to stand trial for felonies". Can you provide documentation as to who made that declaration?
Why would Hur's statement have anything to do with Trumps trial? Biden was deposed for what would have been a felony for anyone else. The retention of classified documents...the same thing you got your stained old man drawers in a bunch about in 2023 regarding Trump. Robert Hur interviewed Biden found him to be not-triable (word?) due to those things I listed before. I didn't say those things a Federal prosecutor did.
You didn't ask who in the Trump trial discussed Biden's mental capabilities....you asked..."Scott says Biden has 'has been declared too demented to stand trial for felonies'. Can you provide documentation as to who made that declaration?" I did....Robert Hur.
If you know of another instance where Biden has been deposed and not found mentally deficient I'm all ears!

Kind of funny that SCOTUS unanimously slapped down NY states lawfare against the NRA at the same time the corrupt NY system was pulling all the stops to trip up Trump but ended up helping him and it will never hold up on appeal -
“This is exemplified by social movements calling for divestment from fossil fuels and cessation of underwriting of coal-fired power infrastructure,” the DFS memo added.
Got that? Insurers were being told to drop underwriting and investment in fossil fuels because activist “social movements” were likely to demand that they do so. Who needs to pass laws when just the possibility of leftwing activism is enough to trigger regulation?
his ruling is a clear win for economic growth. By curbing the power of regulators to impose ideologically driven policies, the Supreme Court has opened the door for fossil fuel companies to continue their essential work without undue interference. This decision could help ensure that energy remains affordable and available, supporting economic stability and growth.
https://www.breitbart.com/economy/2024/05/30/breitbart-business-digest-how-a-gun-rights-victory-benefits-fossil-fuels/
Justice Sotomayor, writing for a unanimous court, said a government official “can share her views freely and criticize particular beliefs, and she can do so forcefully in the hopes of persuading others to follow her lead. In doing so, she can rely on the merits and force of her ideas, the strength of her convictions, and her ability to inspire others. What she cannot do, however, is use the power of the State to punish or suppress disfavored expression.”
Justice Sotomayor expanded on the decision in Bantam Books, Inc., which stated the First Amendment does not permit government officials to use the “threat of invoking legal sanctions and other means of coercion…to achieve the suppression [of disfavored speech].” In this case, Vullo, as the superintendent of DFS, “had direct regulatory and enforcement authority over all insurance companies and financial service institutions doing business in New York…[she] could initiate investigations and refer cases for prosecution.” Using her position, Vullo told Lloyd’s of London, who was facing violations of New York law, that she “would ‘focus’ her enforcement actions ‘solely’ on the syndicates with ties to the NRA,’ and ignore other syndicates writing similar policies.” The unanimous Court concluded, “whether analyzed as a threat or as an inducement, the conclusion is the same: Vullo allegedly coerced Lloyd’s by saying she would ignore unrelated infractions and focus her enforcement efforts on NRA-related business.”

I figger that the main point here is to find him GUILTY of something, anything. It doesn't really much matter what.
Act II is to somehow tie together something salacious (HE HAD SEX WITH A PORN STAR!) with GUILTY!. After that, you just shout GUILTY! and then somehow tie that together with all his imagined crimes.
Hey, its a tough job being a combination of Scheming Hitler Guy, Evil Rapist Man, Joe Isuzu, and doddering old moron. Trump has become a sort of repository for everything 'progressives' dislike in themselves. The insane people are casting off a demon. It won't improve their mental health in the long run, but there's a joy in the Two Minutes Hate, a kind of endorphin rush.

scenes 7:08 - "The insane people are casting off a demon"
That's about it. They had one of their political shamans (De Niro) outside the trial warning the natives about needing to appease the gods:
“I don’t mean to scare you. No, wait, maybe I do mean to scare you,” he said at one point. “If Trump returns to the White House, you can kiss these freedoms goodbye that we all take for granted.
“And elections. Forget about it. That’s over. That’s done. If he gets in. I can tell you right now. He will never leave. He will never leave. You know that. He will never leave.”
There is no rational discourse - there is only foaming at the mouth hysteria. And so the volcano god must be appeased. The rule of law needs to be pushed aside to make way for a sacrifice. It doesn't change the economy or improve the situation in Ukraine or the middle east. Trump will still get all the votes he needs to win.
But Paul gets to screech "convicted felon" every time his pick for POTUS drives our country further into the ditch.
The funny thing is the Dems have landed their Great Orange Whale into their row boat. What are they going to do now?

I admit that it's fun watching the histrionics (or hystrionics I guess). Casting the Tangerine Tornado as the most evil, most venal, most stupid, most rude, most unfeeling, most ambitious, most ignorant person in history takes a certain amount of fancy footwork.
Generally, I'd say that the results of the election won't matter much, aside from the inevitable property destruction by mostly-peaceful progressives with an (R) win. Given Biden's dementia, the bureaucracy and staff will do pretty much what they like. Given dislike of Trump, the bureaucracy and staff will do pretty much what they like. I'd say that Trump's only superpower here will be executive orders and a less warlike foreign policy, but there's no tellin'.
There's a lot of dying in a culture and nothing is permanent. A reasonable person's goal should be to do their own little part in setting up success for the future, hopefully with a short interregnum. Making yourself genuinely useful, as opposed to professional minstrel or ad-selling internet marketeer is always a good start.

For now oh great ponytail of ignorance -
CNN senior legal analyst Elie Honig criticized the New York criminal case against Donald Trump as an "unjustified mess" in a scathing analysis piece, saying prosecutors "contorted the law" to ensnare the former president.
"Prosecutors got their man, for now at least — but they also contorted the law in an unprecedented manner in their quest to snare their prey,"
"Both of these things can be true at once: The jury did its job, and this case was an ill-conceived, unjustified mess. Sure, victory is the great deodorant, but a guilty verdict doesn’t make it all pure and right," Honig wrote.
"Plenty of prosecutors have won plenty of convictions in cases that shouldn’t have been brought in the first place," he continued. "'But they won' is no defense to a strained, convoluted reach unless the goal is to 'win,' now, by any means necessary and worry about the credibility of the case and the fallout later.

While military spending has dropped and dropped as a percent of GDP (whatever 'GDP' is now), the mandatory spending goes up-and-up along with interest. The vultures fight over the carcass, good deeds are invented, the Free Shit Army advances on a broad front. In the meantime, coffee shop economists will yammer on about how RICH PEOPLE need to PAY THEIR FAIR SHARE and how low-profit businesses like health insurance are GREEDY and need to give more stuff to THE PEOPLE.

Creepy grampa joe lying his ass off AGAIN -
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued two separate statements indicating that Biden’s proposal was not, in fact, Israel’s proposal. Former President Barack Obama let slip that the proposal was actually Biden’s, and not Israel’s proposal.
Hamas, however, reacted favorably, since the deal would allow the terror group to survive.
As the Sabbath ended, two of the right-wing parties in Netanyahu’s coalition blasted the deal and said they would not be part of any government that allowed Hamas to survive the war, nor agree to a deal that would do the same.
It was a confirmation that the so-called Israeli “proposal” had not, in fact, been proposed by the Israeli government at all.
Biden’s intent appears to have been to box Israel into a deal that Hamas would have approved, making it harder for Israel to reject it.
Rather than claiming credit for the proposal, he presented it as if it had come from Israel, which would serve to undermine trust between Netanyahu and the right-wing parties in his coalition, bringing down the Israeli government.

Not declaring millions of dollars of income is now a "trumped up charge"?
Making a false declaration on a federal firearm form (4473, I believe) is a "trumped up charge"?
They've already let him off on several criminal charges by not acting and letting the statute of limitations expire.
Don't worry - the defense will press the point that this is all about letting Trump get a "win" and you can count on at least a couple of Biden Butt Lickers to ignore the charges and the facts and vote for acquittal. Backfiring in a spectacular way on multiple fronts from massive cash and this -
The guilty verdict rendered against former President Trump is bringing moderate Republicans and longtime Trump skeptics to his side in a way that Trump’s campaign has failed to do for months.

George
What years were the "heights of glory" that you refer to?

Paul 630pm - 1945-1960 IMHO

" 1945-1960 IMHO"
I expect that glory years for a country will tend to overlap the era when one was young and had good hair, although it does seem to me that something rather peculiar has been abroad in the land for the last decade or so. Perhaps it's just the rise of of fairly useless symbol manipulation, be it the internet or the FIRE industries, as the driving force. Dunno.
At least the Pride flags are gaily fluttering statewide now. Designing vexillology whose purpose is exclusionary (no straight white men or, sometimes, Asians) is a tricky business.
It seems to me that a worthwhile exercise for anyone is to get hold of older general-interest magazines (from eBay if you like paper, archive.org is you are a cheapskate) and read through the post-war era again. I'm always surprised by (a) how much I've forgotten and (b) how much better writing used to be. Illiteracy being the order of the day, I can't say I'm surprised by (b), but always shocked by (a).

"Last night Lauren Boebert joined 45 other Republicans in voting for Marjorie Taylor Greene’s amendment to defund NATO.
This is an ignorant vote and frankly what we’ve come to expect from a congresswoman who has no idea what she’s doing or how her actions impact American national security.
There’s no way this amendment could pass, but the fact that these extremists in the GOP are trying is a HUGE gift to Vladimir Putin.
Russian propaganda has been hard at work sowing division among American lawmakers and voters to undercut our commitment to Ukraine’s national sovereignty. Boebert’s vote proves that she’s willing to be Putin’s useful idiot.
If Russia is allowed to succeed in Ukraine, it will not only be a travesty for the Ukrainian people and their fight for independence, it will push Russian forces directly into conflict with our NATO allies – risking a much larger war.
This is the kind of vote that could only come from someone who doesn’t give a damn about American troops or national security – which makes Boebert dangerous.
From her votes against veterans (over 15 times) to her jokes about climate security to playing a Russian stooge, Lauren Boebert is too dangerous to stay in Congress."
MAGA minds at work.

My guess is that you have no clue what the result would be of disentangling from NATO.
Would a pan-European military become more well-formed and well-funded? Would Germany be less a vassal state to the US? Would all 140M Russians invade the 440M EU citizens (with an 1/8 of the GDP)?
With Ukraine grinding to a dead halt, my guess is that Russian forces might take a while to get to the English Channel.
At this point, it looks like a great big grift machine to me, but it's impossible to say. Maybe the money would be better spent beefing up the Anglosphere/Five Eyes relationship.
It's surprising to me that people who think nothing of essentially unrestricted mass immigration care so much about borders 6000 miles away, but then that's just years of mass media propaganda for you.

...as a side note.
Speaking from my own BarcaLounger(tm) of Ignorance, I'd say that most military expenditure being done right now is wasted money.
From all appearances, the ground war in Ukraine is essentially stalled and fought with inexpensive drones. Air defense has outstripped air offense. Computers and countermeasures and countercountermeasures are a thing.
The big US weapons programs are, I'll bet, good money thrown after bad. It's all about iron rice bowls for the big contractors, and a lack of good hiring for the military itself as it turns into a giant jobs program for the underprivileged.
Seeing as how the most capable military is drawn from the ranks of the MAGA-folks who are so disliked in Blue Country, good luck going forward in any case.
