George Rebane
This is a lament. From his statements and recent – post Tim Walz – behavior it looks to me that Donald Trump has really gone off the rails and is headed for a massive defeat in November. As the record of these pages confirms and given the available choices, I have been a qualified Trump supporter ever since he became the Republican nominee in 2016. During the entire time I have been chagrined at his tendency for bombast, bravura, and exaggeration, especially when on the campaign trail.
Today, when finally presented with an ideal pair of very vulnerable opponents, and eight years of experience under his belt in how his off-track shooting from the lip has been received, he still pays no mind to the harm he does to himself and the Republican party by continuing on the same path. And he is doing it proudly as he has declared to his audiences that he has no intention of changing his gratuitous personal attacks on anyone that happens to cross his mind while on the podium.
So now the country’s conservatives, capitalists, and small government devotees have to suffer through daily doses of free leftwing talking points served up to the lamestream media by Trump. Their news stories and commentaries almost write themselves from the copy spouted by our former president. Instead of focusing on the rich trove of Democrats’ lies and policy screw-ups from the Obama and Biden/Harris administrations, Trump continues to be the petulant third grader on the playground focusing on lurid descriptions of his opponents’ real and imagined personal shortcomings.
Perhaps the most worrying aspect of his campaign is that he has no strong adult advisors in his inner circle who can tell him daily when he needs zip his lip. It’s hard for me to believe he doesn’t have a cadre or even a small clutch of such people in his inner circle. But it is clear that he is flying blind without the aid of such critical navigators. Were such people to exist, we would by now have seen them resigning one-by-one as Trump continued to ignore their counsel.
Given this ongoing travail, my own assessment of his probability of winning in November started with a paltry 0.45 and eked up to 0.48 (here) after the assassination attempt. But taking into account what has happened since, my belief in his chances for regaining the White House has plummeted to 0.22, or a bit more than one in five. This new assessment accurately represents the dour mood that the Trump campaign has me in.

Trump's mental state has deteriorated quickly.
As a legend in his own mind and with a giant ego, he is obsessed with the size of things.
He also still cannot believe that he and his pet causes have lost repeatedly.
“Has anyone noticed that Kamala CHEATED at the airport? There was nobody at the plane, and she ‘A.I.’d’ it, and showed a massive ‘crowd’ of so-called followers, BUT THEY DIDN’T EXIST! She was turned in by a maintenance worker at the airport when he noticed the fake crowd picture, but there was nobody there, later confirmed by the reflection of the mirror like finish on the Vice Presidential Plane,” Trump wrote. “She’s a CHEATER. She had NOBODY waiting, and the ‘crowd’ looked like 10,000 people! Same thing is happening with her fake ‘crowds’ at her speeches. This is the way the Democrats win Elections, by CHEATING.”

re: scotto@10:10PM
from CBS News:
'President Biden says former President Donald Trump is "a genuine danger to American security" if he wins the election.
"There’s little regard by the MAGA Republicans for the political institutions. That's what holds this country together. That's what democracy's about. That's who we are as a nation."'
----
I agree. If Trump doesn't have a travel 'accident' or poor security, the bureaucracy will tap the beejezus out of his communications, MSM will do a full-court press, Google search will do it's nudging thing, etc.
I do agree with Biden on the political institutions. That's the thing with the destruction of churches, decline of fraternal organizations, direct government payments, mass immigration from the 3rd World, triumph of single-mother households, and the general death of traditional society. All that's left is political institutions. Whether it's was purposeful or not, The State becomes the only control system left. The current wedge being driven between children and parents, this whole business of gender confusion and the training of kids in sexual fetishes, with The State being the final authority for kids, is the end game.
You know, the Progressives will go away at some point, replaced by God-knows-what, but it won't be in my lifetime.
Posted by: scenes | 12 August 2024 at 06:29 AM
"The State becomes the only control system left."
Yep - the old control systems were the church and social pressures (societal norms) and family structures. They were not always the best but they were voluntary. You could always leave the church, walk away from the family fortune, or just hang out on the edge of society picking up cash jobs here and there. Once the govt becomes your means of life support they also become your jailer in various ways in short order.
Our country was founded by and populated by people largely looking for the opposite. It was a nice experiment, but it looks like old Ben's warning is being thrown on the trash heap. Who wants a Republic? We wants "our democracy" - mob rule.
Enjoy!

"Mob rule Scott? Of course you're referring to the mob that attacked and broke into the Capitol on Jan 6. Good observation. We agree on that one"
What rule? Unlike the mostly-peaceful George Floyd rioters, getting their %100 off sale while burning down the town, or the black-clad Democrats firebombing the courthouse in Oregon every day, those people are cooling their heels in jail or facing a court date.
Really, it's just like the UK now. A two-tier system. Political 'activities' by the Left are mostly excused, the few by the Right have the entire legal apparatus come down on them. There are exceptions to both cases, but not many.
Not much new here, but it does show who The Man is backing. It cracks me up that Mr. Emery, who likely fancied himself a bit of a rebel in his time, is now four-square for the Establishment, an increasingly controlling one at that. Who knew that they would take and hold the hill of sexual fetishes and child surgery?

Oh, hell no. They'll be convictions to come for all sorts of conservatives for years to come.
The feds are upgrading every sort of simple trespass and failure-to-obey into felonies with jail sentences that are totally beyond all reason.
Meanwhile left-wing rioters that assaulted police and fed agents and tried to burn down fed buildings are let off with small fines or case dismissed.
The fact remains that only a tiny percentage of Jan 6th protesters engaged in violent activity.
And none of them "ruled" anything.
I realize that Paul can't directly engage in disputing my facts, so he does the usual weasel-dance. All of my statements stand with no rebuttal from Paul.

More from The Wall Street Journal editorial page editor Gerard Baker:
I’m not even talking here about the usual grotesque hyperbolic assertions or baffling verbal manufactures, the finest of which last week was surely the description of “people dying financially because they can’t buy bacon.”
I am talking about things like these:
• The argument that he must have won Georgia in 2020 because he easily won Alabama and South Carolina, suggesting he thinks that Georgia—which has two Democratic senators, and which two Democrats have carried in the last eight presidential elections—is politically indistinguishable from states that no Democratic candidate has carried since 1976.
• The claim that the crowd at his Jan. 6, 2021, rally was as big as the one at Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech in 1963.
• The assertion that everyone in America agreed that Roe v. Wade needed to be overturned.

Paul - Baker stated that the lies were the minority. A politician telling the truth 2/3rds of the time is about as much as I could hope for.
I'm more concerned with how he governs and he proved to be a good president.
Harris is a failure - she can boast of nothing other than job titles. The Biden/Harris admin has been destructive to our country and detrimental to world peace.
The woman is not intelligent and multiple people who have worked with her at the state and fed level have said she is a poor leader and is a foul-mouthed tyrant who blames underlings for her errors.
She won't do press conferences or sit down for interviews. Because she has no intelligent answers and she knows the hyena laugh no longer works as a dodge.
Posted by: Scott O | 12 August 2024 at 06:53 PM
Don 6:53 - I've been pointing this out for years. Leftists and Dems are the most racist folks around.
They are constantly telling us that black kids are too stupid to pass standardized tests.
It would follow then that they are admitting the whole race of sub-Saharan people are mentally inferior to white folk.
I guess if that's all you have to offer as a leader in the teacher's union as an excuse for poor test results of the kids you are paid to teach, then I suppose you will have to run with it.
Funny how black kids in conservative private schools do better in standardized tests than white kids from govt run schools.
Maybe they can explain that.

Newsweek headline rewrites Trump's pledge to eliminate taxes on tips as 'Kamala Harris' tax proposal'
The Trump campaign has accused Harris of copying his no tax on tips plan
Though the headline implied support for Harris’ plan, the article itself acknowledged the poll was conducted on July 29, prior to Harris’ announcement. The piece also noted the plan was previously proposed by Trump and added to the Republican platform months prior.
"The majority of Americans support plans to end federal taxes on tips given to service industry workers, according to an exclusive poll for Newsweek which shows why Kamala Harris embraced the policy plan first announced by her opponent Donald Trump," the article read.

Trump telling me that "everyone" wanted Roe v Wade overturned is no different than a Dem telling me that "everyone" wants universal gun registration, or some other Dem talking point. It means nothing to me.
Trump exaggerating the size of his crowd has no bearing on anything.
Harris lying about Biden being mentally fit to run the country is disturbing and shows a complete disregard for the truth as well as a disregard for the safety of our nation. Biden was too senile for any elective office when he ran for POTUS, yet Harris and the Dems and the LSM covered it up with one lie after another.

"bring down costs" - of what? How? WTF?
"ban late charges from financial institutions" - Good luck with that. Say - will that include the IRS?
"limit unfair rent increases" - on what authority?
"cap prescription drug costs." - all prescription drugs? What will be the cap - 2 or 3 thousand a month?

“Eradicate climate change references”; only talk to conservative media; don’t leave a paper trail for watchdogs to discover. In a series of never-before-published videos, Project 2025 details how a second Trump administration would operate."

The Project 2025 videos coach future appointees on everything from the nuts and bolts of governing to how to outwit bureaucrats. There are strategies for avoiding embarrassing Freedom of Information Act disclosures and ensuring that conservative policies aren’t struck down by “left-wing judges.” Some of the content is routine advice that any incoming political appointee might be told. Other segments of the training offer guidance on radically changing how the federal government works and what it does."

It is Trump that expressed his opinion as fact. It is a FACT that Trump said that and it is not true and is therefore a lie. Here's a direct quote from him on the question of overturning Roe V Wade:
DONALD TRUMP: "So, I think the abortion issue is written very much tampered down. And I’ve answered, I think, very well in the debate. And it seems to be much less of an issue, especially for those where they have the exceptions, as you know. And I think it’s — when I looked, for 52 years, they wanted to bring abortion back to the states. They wanted to get rid of Roe v. Wade. And that’s Democrats, Republicans, and independents, and everybody — liberals, conservatives."

I'm talking about the lies of a Presidential candidate, Trump, that you support Don. If it's not a lie it's complete ignorance which is pathetic when it comes from a Presidential candidate.

PaulE 151pm - You're welcome. Now I wish you'd notice that the WSJ publishes pieces critical of Trump when he needs to be criticized, and does not hew to the party line like all your lamestream outlets. Also, please do discriminate between news and opinion commentaries; the newspaper goes to great lengths to separate news from its op-ed content.

Voters’ sour moods stand to test Harris ‘joy’ campaign
Two-thirds of Americans report being very or somewhat pessimistic about the state of politics in the U.S., according to an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs
Only 16 percent of Americans in the survey said they were very or somewhat optimistic about the state of politics. The number of Americans who are pessimistic about the state of politics has been lingering above 60 percent in surveys since July 2021, while the amount of Americans who say they are optimistic hasn’t been above 20 percent since February 2020.

What is your opinion of Trumps statement when he said "They wanted to get rid of Roe v. Wade. And that’s Democrats, Republicans, and independents, and everybody — liberals, conservatives."
It is a fact that Trump said that. Was he lying or did he honestly believe that "everybody" wanted to repeal Roe V Wade?
Posted by: Paul Emery | 13 August 2024 at 06:52 PM
Punch... what does it matter? What does it fucking matter?
Roe is dead. It's a state issue now.
Stop punching.

Even cnn has to admit a lot of the country is in survival mode after years of harris and creepy grampa joe who was never in charge -
The CNN polls suggest that as many as 69% of individuals and families cut back on extra spending in 2024, June. Compared to 2023, May 2022, only 63% said they needed to cut back.
American consumers said they had to change what they regularly bought for groceries to help keep within the budget.
According to the poll in 2024 June, as many as 41% of American consumers are using their private transport to get around or commute to and from work. Cutting back on how much they drove their vehicles was an effort to save money.
CNN reported that the majority of people who said it has become hard to survive and fear they cannot pay bills are Latin Americans and African Americans. Reports say 52% are Latin Americans and 46% are Black Americans.
“Stall speed” refers to a very slow economic growth rate. In the U.S., the economy is growing by 2%. U.S. Bank Wealth Management’s senior investment strategy director, Rob Hayworth, called the economy’s growth “stall speed.”
A CDC analyst, Angela Russell, told CNN that she, too, struggles to keep up with costs. She mentioned that “everything has gone up” from clothing to insurance.

JoeTato?
The jig is up on that con job. Of course there are a few die hard idiots like Paul and the Hillbilly that still believe he's "sharp as a tack".
The fact that Biden was past his sell-by date when he first ran against Trump was obvious to folks with intelligence, but after the debate, even most of gap-toothed goobers scratched their heads and realized they'd been had by the hucksters.
Biden never had any operational control over what went on in the executive branch anyway, so why bother to drag him out of his house and pull the strings on his jaw to make presidential noise?
The last 4 years of our country's political scene are something you could not have made up in your wildest imagination.
We have the party of "our democracy" running a candidate not one person voted for in the primary.
She'll be the perfect POTUS for our nation in the Brave New World.

re: Elon Musk hosting Harris.
I'd be surprised if that happens.
With the casting of Musk as Public Enemy #2, there's a fear of legitimizing him and his crazy Nazi ideas. Best to stick to MSNBC hosts opining over the airwaves. Harris' inability to speak in an ad lib fashion also would tend against it.
The irony of the Western Left hating the one guy, Elon Musk, who actually is doing amazing things at scale, is unironic I guess. A society consisting of people scrabbling their way up a corporate/gubmint management structure is not one to encourage entrepreneurs. Individuals are to be buried in the collective, and for midwits the collective offers better opportunities for advancement.
Normally I wouldn't care much about a culture run by the interests of Crazy Cat Ladies and their enablers, but given the opportunities for ubiquitous surveillance and digital scrutinizing of your life, times really are different. It probably doesn't matter who is President in the medium run since the underlying machinery for control and the management state with it's hands on the levers is unlikely to change.
I do have to wonder if the overtaking of 'doing' by symbol manipulation hasn't helped the Final Victory of cat ladies and gracile males. There's probably some biological underpinnings for pathological altruism and xenophilia, but the legal and administrative systems being put in place land us in the same soup as a militarist society.

fisho: "Gee….wonder what happened to the President?"
You'll hear about it in 10-20 years with a series of tell-all tomes that end up in the Goodwill book section next to volumes of microwave recipes.
Like the nice spokescatlady that explained why it's OK that Biden was missing when asked about the nuclear-button-in-a-briefcase, "it's OK since there's a committee running everything" (or the equivalent). The end result was always going to be corporatism rather than Great Man politics as government metastasized. Bummer that the corporation idolizes sexual fetishes, but it's the style of the era.
Out in the social media webz, I always have to laugh at the handwaving about 'The Constitution', separation of powers, etc. There's a cargo cult thinking here. You might as well give Eritrea the US Constitution and expect anything different to happen. The founding documents were more a codification of existing American behaviors and attitudes at the time, not something you can use to control our current broken culture.
At this point we need Saint Leibowitz, not George Washington.

It's getting to be that way. However - there are still millions that want to honor the spirit and the letter of the law.
As soon as the SCOTUS is "reformed" - packed with progressives that see the Constitution as something to be "re-imagined" - then that old document written by dead white men will be retired to the Smithsonian basement and we can fully get on with "our democracy".

Paul at 1:04pm: That's true. A majority of Americans support states making the abortion decision. Because it is a majority, of course such majority includes all sorts of people including Democrats and Republicans. If you have some proof otherwise, feel free to cite it. Don't bother citing polls that say Americans don't support overturning Roe, as most people think that Roe stands for making abortion legal. That is not true and polls which ask the question this way are push polls. If you find a poll asking whether Americans support states making the abortion decision, I will consider it.

Here's a link supporting mine that states a majority disapproved of the decision.
